Human Resource Management in the Health Care Sector: A Guide for Administrators and Professionals
Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0899302017 |
Book Description
This volume brings together the work of several outstanding scholars on the critical subject of human resource management in the health care sector. As the contributors note, the combined pressures of an aging population, higher costs, and reduced Medicare reimbursement formulas have made more efficient delivery of services a primary concern for health care facilities of all kinds. Because of the labor-intensive nature of health services, this goal cannot be achieved without more effective human resource management. Here, noted authorities in the field present the latest techniques and practical applications of human resource management specifically tailored to the needs of health care professionals. Broadly comprehensive in scope, this volume addresses each of the major concerns in human resources: planning, staffing, equal employment, performance appraisal, compensation, training, safety, employee rights, and industrial and labor relations. The book begins by presenting a conceptual framework for human resource management, the strategic choice model. Subsequent chapters build upon this model by presenting a systems approach to strategic human resource planning and demonstrating the importance of job design and job analysis in this context. The contributors then discuss recruitment strategies, performance-based pay systems, employee evaluations, and the design of compensation systems, focusing throughout on issues of particular relevance in the health care sector. Finally, a number of chapters explore topics of increasing concern to both health care workers and administrators, including quality of work life, the burgeoning home health care industry, collective bargaining and legislation, managing change in the health care environment, and the challenges posed by information technology. An indispensable reference source for health practitioners, researchers, and students, Human Resource Management in the Health Care Sector is also a valuable text for courses in health, business, nursing, and management.Customer Reviews:

Fundamentals of the Physical Theory of Diffraction
Pyotr Ya. Ufimtsev Manufacturer: Wiley-IEEE Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 047009771X |
Book Description
This book is the first complete and comprehensive description of the modern Physical Theory of Diffraction (PTD) based on the concept of elementary edge waves (EEWs). The theory is demonstrated with the example of the diffraction of acoustic and electromagnetic waves at perfectly reflecting objects. The derived analytic expressions clearly explain the physical structure of the scattered field and describe in detail all of the reflected and diffracted rays and beams, as well as the fields in the vicinity of caustics and foci. Shadow radiation, a new fundamental component of the field, is introduced and proven to contain half of the total scattered power.

Powder Diffraction: The Rietveld Method and the Two Stage Method to Determine and Refine Crystal Structures from Powder Diffraction Data
Georg Will Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 3540279857 |
Book Description
Crystal structure analysis from powder diffraction data has attracted considerable and ever growing interest in the last decades. X-ray powder diffraction is best known for phase analysis (Hanawalt files) dating back to the 30s. In the late 60s the inherent potential of powder diffraction for crystallographic problems was realized and scientists developed methods for using powder diffraction data at first only for the refinement of crystal structures. With the development of ever growing computer power profile fitting and pattern decomposition allowed to extract individual intensities from overlapping diffraction peaks opening the way to many other applications, especially to ab initio structure determination. Powder diffraction today is used in X-ray and neutron diffraction, where it is a powerful method in neutron diffraction for the determination of magnetic structures. In the last decade the interest has dramatically improved. There is hardly any field of crystallography where the Rietveld, or full pattern method has not been tried with quantitative phase analysis the most important recent application.

Diffraction Effects in Semiclassical Scattering (Montroll Memorial Lecture Series in Mathematical Physics)
H. M. Nussenzveig Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521025877 |
Book Description
Critical effects in semiclassical light scattering, in which the standard approximations break down, are associated with forward peaking, rainbows, glories, orbiting, and resonances. Besides giving rise to beautiful optical effects in the atmosphere, critical effects have important applications in many areas of physics. Their interpretation and accurate treatment, however, are difficult. This book deals with the theory of these critical effects. After a preliminary chapter posing the problem of critical effects, the next three chapters on coronae, rainbows, and glories, are written to be accessible to a broader audience of physicists. The main part of the book then describes the results obtained from the application of complex angular momentum techniques to scattering by homogeneous spheres. These techniques lead to practically usable asymptotic approximations, and to new physical insights into critical effects. A new conceptual picture of diffraction, regarded as a tunnelling effect, emerges. The final two chapters contain brief descriptions of applications to a broad range of fields including linear and nonlinear optics, radiative transfer, astronomy, acoustics, seismology, atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. This book intends to convey the basic concepts and physical interpretations that emerge from the new approach, rather than the complete formalism.Customer Reviews:

Asymptotic Methods in Electromagnetics
Daniel Bouche , Frederic Molinet , and Ray Mittra Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Telos ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540615741 |
Book Description
Numerically rigorous techniques for the computation of electromagnetic fields diffracted by an object become computationally intensive, if not impractical to handle, at high frequencies and one must resort to asymptotic methods to solve the scattering problem at short wavelengths. The asymptotic methods provide closed form expansions for the diffracted fields and are also useful for eliciting physical interpretations of the various diffraction phenomena. One of the principal objectives of this book is to discuss the different asymptotic methods in a unified manner. Although the book contains explicit formulas for computing the field diffracted by conducting or dielectric-coated objects, it also provides the mathematical foundations of the different methods and explains how they are interrelated.

A History of Algorithms: From the Pebble to the Microchip
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 3540633693 |
Book Description
A Source Book for the History of Mathematics, but one which offers a different perspective by focusinng on algorithms. With the development of computing has come an awakening of interest in algorithms. Often neglected by historians and modern scientists, more concerned with the nature of concepts, algorithmic procedures turn out to have been instrumental in the development of fundamental ideas: practice led to theory just as much as the other way round. The purpose of this book is to offer a historical background to contemporary algorithmic practice.Customer Reviews:
A very well presented history of algorithms for applied math.......2000-03-31
The style is simple, most sections start with an intro, followed by a short extract written by an original author (say Newton or Gauss), to finish with explanation or highlights refering to the text. This is what makes the book so good, throughout the book is a great feeling of discovery in its context. When you read a section on Gauss it is right after the section on Fermat and the flow of ideas is really well presented.
So if you like mathematics and want to get a nice overview of algorithms in applied mathematics this is the book to buy.

Memoirs of a Survivor of the Twentieth Century: From Transylvania to the United States
Elemer Mihalyi Manufacturer: Writer's Showcase Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0595209777 |
Book Description
This is an autobiography. Describes the life of Elem¨¦r Mih¨¢lyi from early childhood, through school years, medical school and work as a doctor during the siege of Budapest and in a Russian prison camp. After this he abandoned medical practice and for the rest of his life was engaged in scientific research, first in Budapest, then in Stockholm and finally in the USA; for the last 30 years in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. The tumultuous events in Central Europe between the World Wars and after form the background of the history of his family. Romania occupied Transylvania in 1920 and an oppressive, chauvinistic regime followed. This was alleviated in the northern half when this was returned to Hungary, however after the war Romanian rule was restored for the whole province. The author escaped to Hungary, but soon Communism was slowly encroaching this country. Again he had to leave and by good luck arrived to America. Beside the hisrical facts all of this is illustrated by numerous anecdotal events, more than by an analytical approach. All the episodes are true, from the life of the author, given without embellishments or omissions.Books:
