An organic farming report.......2007-06-13

This book reads like a report written for an intro college class. It is all statistics and interviews . . . not much if any new ideas about organic farming. This may be an interesting read for someone interested in organic farming but for those of us who are already practicing it (or trying to) it doesn't really accomplish much. I think that the statistics could be helpful if you need to construct a business plan. My favorite part of the book were the interviews--it gave me a better idea of the variety of organic producers out there and a bit of biographical info. However, overall, I did not learn anything that I could test out on our farm. This was not nearly as helpful as Joel Salatin's books or other books offered by ACRES.

Cyclic Voltammetry is the only book solely devoted to its subject and containing a data analysis project written by the author. Beginning with the fundamentals of cyclic voltammetry from both an experimental and theoretical point of view, the author focuses on the applications in data interpretation with emphasis on chemical reactions and electrode reduction potentials. The PC compatible computer program that accompanies the book provides the experimentalists with a simulation-based approach for the analysis of cyclic voltammograms. A survey format is utilized to discuss the use of CV for the study of reaction mechanisms in diverse branches of chemistry. The author then presents the method of simulation by explicit finite differences, the most commonly employed numerical method of CV analysis. The CVSIM program, written by the author and used in several countries, simulates cyclic voltammetric experiments. It is explained along with DSTEP, a general program for the simulation of double potential step experiments. Next the author describes CVFIT to find the least squares best fit between experimental and simulated cyclic voltammograms. Chemists of all types as well as academic and industrial researchers and graduate level students are certain to find cyclic voltammetry a useful, valuable and long overdue addition to the field.

Description:
Electrochemical properties of cocaine and its metabolites such as benzoylecgonine (BE), ecgonine (ECG), and ecgonine methyl ester (EME) have been studied by means of square-wave voltammetry (SWV) at a hanging mercury drop electrode. In a phosphate buffer at pH 7 cocaine gives rise to a single voltammetric peak at about -1.490V versus AgCl (3mol/l KCl). At higher pH, BE is spontaneously formed, as a first hydrolysis product of cocaine. BE can further hydrolyse to ecgonine that is electrochemically inactive at the mercury electrode. Ecgonine methyl ester, an another hydrolysis product of cocaine, is electrochemically inactive at the mercury electrode, too. BE undergoes reduction owing to its ester group, giving rise to a voltammetric peak within the potential interval from -1.010 to -1.200V, depending on the concentration of BE. Thus, at pH 8.5, cocaine solution gives rise to two SW peaks due to the reduction of unhydrolysed cocaine and BE. The reduction of BE undergoes through a complex electrode mechanism coupled by adsorption and two types of following chemical reactions. The reduction electrode product of BE undergoes (i) dimerisation and then (ii) protonation leading to final products, most probably ecgonine and benzaldehyde. The rate of the later chemical reaction is controlled by the proton concentration in the electrolyte solution. Comparing the voltammetric properties of cocaine to that of BE and methyl ester ecgonine, it has been concluded that the electrochemical activity of cocaine originates from the reduction of the same ester group as in the case of BE. The main difference between cocaine and BE is manifested in their tendency for adsorption on the mercury electrode surface. BE adsorbs stronger than cocaine, and hence an adsorptive stripping voltammetric method for determination of cocaine was developed on the basis of BE reduction.

The author unselfishly exposes with annotated reality how life was and how her angels caressed her into her new being. With a stunning combination of a gutsy knuckle down determination and the silky graciousness of spiritual insight, the author weaves in and out of medications, surgery, suicide attempts, severe migraines and hallucinations. Her brutal collisions with her own brain and her family conclude in birthing her anew to a fresh meaningful archetype.

Acaysha's story starts with the affliction of epilepsy when she was two. At the age of 25, she was overwhelmed with 22 seizures in one month. Foraging for better answers to the seizure strangulation hold on her, she conferred with the Mayo Clinic. After extensive testing, she was accepted as a good candidate for a complex innovative surgery to remove the damage to her brain. This sparked the beginning of an amazing journey.

The author's true story put her on a path to a different drum for discovery that led her to gathering unique wellness information. Acaysha challenges us to take an active responsible role in creating our own wellness. By reflecting on the information she collected and devised, she was able to generate a spiritual bucket load of ideas for people to adopt.

The book is smoothly written in conversation style with bulleted points for easy to follow directions. The author shares her poetry talent with one particular special poem titled I Believe. It starts out with the superb wisdom of "I believe - that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change".

Sometimes when life seems like one long process of getting tired, reading these easy to follow alternative ideas will help the reader jump start the lazy body battery.
