Book Description
Mike Seeds' goal in STARS AND GALAXIES, Fourth Edition (adapted from the newly revised FOUNDATIONS OF ASTRONOMY, Eight Edition) is to help students use astronomy to understand science and use science to understand what we are. Fascinating and engaging, this text illustrates the scientific method and guides students to these fundamental questions: "What are we?" and "How do we know?" In discussing the interplay between evidence and hypothesis, Seeds provides not just facts, but a conceptual framework for understanding the logic of science. The book vividly conveys his love of astronomy, and illustrates how students can comprehend their place in the universe by grasping a small set of physical laws. Crafting a story about astronomy, Mike shows students how to ask questions to gradually puzzle out the beautiful secrets of the physical world. Mathematics is incorporated into the text (and in separate sections for easy reference), but the book's arguments do not depend on mathematical reasoning, keeping even math-averse students engaged. The revision addresses new developments in astrophysics and cosmology, plus the latest discoveries, from hypernovae and gamma ray bursts to proto-galaxies at the limits of the observable universe. This edition is now fully integrated with a FREE, brand-new student tutorial system. AceAstronomy is Web-based, assessment-driven, and completely flexible, creating a personalized learning plan to help each student focus on key concepts to be mastered. This superior system gives students fun, interactive learning opportunities and a greater chance for success.

Customer Reviews:
Great text for an introductory class or interested amateur.......2006-06-08
"Voyages to the Stars and Galaxies" by Fraknoi, Morrison, and Wolff is one of the best introductory astronomy books I have come across. The book is marketed as a textbook for a (non-science major) college course, and as such it works great. But I also think the book would be ideal for anyone who is interested in astronomy, and wants something more substantial than what is offered in most popular astronomy books, but who also does not have the math background (or the time or inclination) for a math intensive textbook. In fact, even if you are interested in a more math intensive book, if you are new to astronomy, this might be a better starting point from which you can branch out later. The reason I say this is because the book gives such an excellent overview of astronomy, while providing very clear explanations of the underlying scientific principles. Thus you walk away from the book seeing the big picture and having a good grasp of the science behind it all. You have an excellent foundation from which to delve into more math intensive books if you so desire.
For example, consider the life of a star. A popular astronomy text will generally give you a nice description of the various stages in a star's life. Interesting, but just not enough meat for some people. A university level textbook will give you all the meat you want, but it may be difficult to see the forest through the trees so to speak. Voyages, on the other hand, gives you the descriptive overview, AND explains the scientific principles behind each stage, all without losing you in lots of math. It is a good balance.
Not that this book has no math in it. There is some, but it is generally minimal, or presented in side bars or additional problems that you can explore.
I've read other introductory astronomy texts, and none have been as consistently clear while striking the right balance for a first year college student or interested amateur.

College text material.......2000-08-30
This book is required at Northern Illinois University for a course in elemental astronomy. It comes with a handy cd-rom helpful for finding stars, planets, etc. Did you know that there is a measurement that is more helpful than light years? It is parsec. Read the book to see how to understand this measurement. Also, guess how many grains of suger are there in a quart jar. The answer is at the bottom of this page. Give up? If that and other mind blowing things interest you then read this book. There are ten billion stars in our galaxy, called the Milky Way, and there are billions of galaxies. (there are about a half billion grains).

Book Description
Hydrogen bonds range from the very strong, comparable with covalent bonds, to the very weak, comparable with van der Waals forces. Most hydrogen bonds are weak attractions with a binding strength about one-tenth of that of a normal covalent bond. Nevertheless, they are very important. Without them, all wooden structures would collapse, cement would crumble, oceans would vaporize, and all living things would disintegrate into inanimate matter. An easy-to-read supplement to the often brief descriptions of hydrogen bonding found in most undergraduate chemistry and molecular biology textbooks, An Introduction to Hydrogen Bonding describes and discusses the current ideas concerning hydrogen bonding, ranging from the very strong to the very weak, with introductions to the experimental and theoretical methods involved. Ideal for courses in chemistry and biochemistry, it will also be useful for structural biology and crystallography courses. For students and researchers interested in supramolecular chemistry, biological structure and recognition, and other sophisticated concepts and methodologies, it provides a careful selection of key references from the vast hydrogen bonding literature.

Methodical treatment.......2004-10-07
Nice book. Unlike other chemistry authors who generally want to jump straight into examining reactions, Housecroft et al begin at the beginning with Quantum Mechanics and build up from there. Their presentation is clear concise and uncluttered.
On the downside, you only get 1 page of problems at the end of each chapter where others give as many as 4 or 5 pages. To make matters worse, I couldn't find answers to the problems. Also, it's surprising to find there's no glossary in a text like this.
Nevertheless it's a very well structured presentation.

Book Description
This book is an introduction to coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry. It is designed primarily for a sophomore inorganic chemistry audience, but could also be used as a supplementary text for some general chemistry courses. Coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry are each given their own self-standing sections, so that the reader can begin in any one of them without becoming frustrated at references to previously learned material. These self-standing chapters also allow you the flexibility to present material in the order you choose.
Customer Reviews:
Useless Class.......2002-08-08
I will not say too much. I think it will be enough to quote from Ayn Rand's "The Voice of Reason; Essays in Objectivist Thought". The book written and the class taught by Glen Rodgers is "perceptual level history, history as nothing but a torrent of unrelated, disintegrated concretes."
The reasons not to buy this book........1999-10-19
This is a poorly written textbook. The worst part is you have to buy the solutions manual separately and I can't find it anywhere.

Book Description
Why are leaves green and blood red? The answer lies with one family of pigments, the porphyrins and their relatives. These pigments are also responsible for the fundamental energetic processes that make life as we know it possible. The properties of these colorful molecules are now being
investigated for use in a wide range of applications, from cancer therapy to microelectronics. The Colours of Life is intended to be an introduction to the porphyrins and their role in life.
Customer Reviews:
This is perhaps the only current text on porphyrins........1998-07-20
This is perhaps the only current textbook on porphyrins, most other books being severely outdated. I use this book to provide my graduate students a quick introduction to porphyrin chemistry. The book's main strength, in my opinion, is that it places comparable amounts of emphasis on chemical and biological aspects. Regarding the chemical aspects (at least), I would have preferred a somewhat more advanced level, that would have allowed a bit more detailed and rigorous discussions on, say, synthesis, metalloporphyrin electronic structure, etc. Thus, I feel that a special topic course on porphyrin chemistry could not be primarily based on this book, but this book certainly deserves being on the required reading list. The book is fun to read. There are no other recent books covering the same subject. It's certainly a worthwhile purchase for anyone with more than a passing interest in porphyrin chemistry.

Production Planning by Mixed Integer Programming (Springer Series in Operations Research and Financial Engineering)
ASIN: 3764372389 |
Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive description of theory, algorithms and software for solving nonconvex mixed integer nonlinear programs (MINLP). The main focus is on deterministic global optimization methods, which play a very important role in integer linear programming, and are used only recently in MINLP.
The presented material consists of two parts. The first part describes basic optimization tools, such as block-separable reformulations, convex and Lagrangian relaxations, decomposition methods and global optimality criteria. Some of these results are presented here for the first time.
The second part is devoted to algorithms. Starting with a short overview on existing methods, deformation, rounding, partitioning and Lagrangian heuristics, and a branch-cut-and-price algorithm are presented. The algorithms are implemented as part of an object-oriented library, called LaGO. Numerical results on several mixed integer nonlinear programs are reported to show abilities and limits of the proposed solution methods.
The book contains many illustrations and an up-to-date bibliography. Because of the emphasis on practical methods, as well as the introduction into the basic theory, it is accessible to a wide audience and can be used both as a research as well as a graduate text.

Book Description
As a war correspondent, Wilbur Fisk was an amateur, yet his letters to the Montpelier Green Mountain Freeman comprise one of the finest collections of Civil War letters in existence. "Literary gems," historian Herman Hattaway calls them. "In fact, they are so good that it would be believable that some expert novelist had created them."
But Fisk was no novelist. He was a rural school teacher from Vermont, primarily self-educated, who enlisted in the Union Army simply because he believed he would regret it later if he didn't.
Unlike professional war correspondents, Private Fisk had no access to rank or headquarters. Instead, he wrote of life as a private--as one of the foot soldiers who slept in the mud and obeyed orders no matter how incomprehensible.
Between December 11, 1861, and July 26, 1865, Fisk wrote nearly 100 letters from the battlefield. At the beginning of the war he was exuberant and eager for contact with the enemy. Two years later, Fisk was disillusioned and war weary. "The rebel dead and ours lay thickly together, their thirst for blood forever quenched. Their bodies were swollen, black, and hideously unnatural. They eyes glared from their sockets, their tongues protruded from their mouths, and in almost every case, clots of blood and mangled flesh showed how they had died, and rendered a sight ghastly beyond description. I thought I had become hardened to almost anything, but I cannot say I ever wish to see another sight like that I saw on the battle-field of Gettysburg."
Fisk wrote as eloquently on the moral and political issues behind the war as he did on the everyday hardships of life in the Army of the Potomac. He saw the war as a question of right and wrong and he continued to believe that it had to be fought, even after he was well acquainted with its horror and pointlessness.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.
