After reading this book I felt very disappointed as I really did not learn anything on how to be an effective trainer. I would not recommend this book to anyone not wanting to waste their time.

A manual for trainers that really is practical!.......2000-05-30

For new trainers, experienced trainers and managers of training, this book is invaluable. As a full-time adult training specialist for almost twenty years, I have read many books on the subject, and this is the one I always recommend. The authors have managed to include the important theory on how adults learn best, without getting boring, and then use this theory to support many practical techniques for trainers to use, so you know what will work, and why. Occasional trainers and new full-time trainers will find all the basics, experienced trainers will find ways of improving or varying techniques, managers will find ways of supporting the training process. The first edition of this reference work became known as the bible of turfgrass entomology upon publication in 1987. It proved invaluable to both professional entomologists and commercial turf managers, and also has been used widely in college extension courses. Now the author of that work, Haruo Tashiro, is joined by Patricia J. Vittum and Michael G. Villani in incorporating the latest research into an eagerly awaited second edition that provides the most comprehensive coverage available of turfgrass pests in the continental United States, Hawaii, and southern Canada.

The volume opens with an account of turfgrass in the modern environment and then offers fundamental information on insects and their arthropod relatives. For each major insect or group, the book covers taxonomy, importance, history and distribution, host plants and damage, description of life stages, life history and habits, and natural enemies. Birds and mammals that are attracted to turfgrass by the presence of insects are also considered. The book provides an overview of detection and diagnosis of insect infestation, survey techniques, and principles of strategy and control.

Every chapter of the original edition has been updated to the current state of knowledge. Among the highlights of the second edition are new chapters on biological control principles, on sampling techniques and setting thresholds, and on integrated pest management. The chapters on chemical control and on insect habitats in turf have been expanded considerably, as have those on billbugs, mole crickets, cutworms, white grubs, and ants.

To aid in identification, this new edition features 576 color images on 72 plates. Larger, clearer images show the life stages of nearly all turfgrass insects to be found in North America north of the Rio Grande, as well as examples of damage. Generally solid and still valuable survey.......2005-06-18

Although this survey is about a decade old now, and there have been a great deal of advancements in modeling and experiment in the time since this survey appeared, the primary chapers in it remain valuable.

The volume began inauspiciously with a chapter by immunologists using dated "fuzzy logic" drivel to make some general claims about the limitations of "Western logic" in helping to understand the immune system. In addition to the authors being so innumerate as to believe that Bart Kosko introduced the notion of a continuum to mathematics, this chapter was devoid of any information that would aid in the modeling of the immune system. Fortunately, this information was provided quite nicely in a later chapter by Kuznetsov.

The second introductory chapter by John Adam gave a very broad overview of some past models and a somewhat philosophical discussion on how to go about modeling biological systems. It included discussions on alternative modeling systems such as catastrophe theory that have now fallen by the wayside, but that may still be of intellectual interest to people working in the field.

The core of the useful content of the book was formed by chapters such as the aforementioned one by Kuznetsov, the one on kinetic cellular theory by Bellomo, Preziosi, and Forni, and the overview of tumor development stages by Chaplain. The other two chapters were less interesting, but still of some use.

An honest account of love & war by an extraordinary man........1999-01-10

What I never learned in school about World War II, I learned from this book. I recommend it highly to anyone, from the person who enjoys reading romance stories to history buffs....there is something here for everyone. Captain Samuelson's writings are honest and sometimes painful, as he probably never intended his diaries to be published, and I commend Ms. Midlo for presenting (and thereby preserving) a bit of U.S. history, as well as a story of an extraordinary man.

A uniquely human perspective of race, war and love........1996-01-21

Contemperaneously made diaries and correspondence of Captain Hymie Samuelson, a young Jewish man from New Orleans, introduces the reader to the life of this soldier in the jungles of the South Pacific. The author matures before your eyes during the two and one-half years he leads a segregated engineering unit in New Guinea The tragedy of his personal life reminds us that war is fought by mere mortals.

Thomas Giordani Wright was a very successful nineteenth-century doctor who died, aged ninety, in 1898. He kept a remarkable diary during the last three years of his medical apprenticeship in the 1820s, which is published here for the first time. Working as assistant in the 'extensive colliery practice' of Mr James McIntyre, Surgeon, Wright had responsibility for 'six collieries around Newcastle and the inferior practice of the house'. He had to make long rounds on horseback, and cope with dreadful accidents and diseases as well as with the demands of his 'reserved proud and selfish' master. But in spite of his arduous and busy life, Wright kept his diary up-to-date (and included autobiographical detail of his earlier life) and has left a vivid account of the life in a busy provincial town of a bright young man at the outset of his career.
