Book Description
UV radiation is an important part in the electromagnetic spectrum since the energy of the photons is great enough to produce important chemical reactions in the atmospheres of planets and satellites of our Solar System, thereby affecting the transmission of this radiation to the ground and its physical properties. Scientists have used different techniques (balloons and rockets) to access to the information contained in this radiation, but the pioneering of this new frontier has not been free of dangers. The Sun is our main source of UV radiation and its description occupies the first two chapters of the book. The Earth is the only known location where life exists in a planetary system and therefore where the interaction of living organism with UV radiation can be tested through different epochs and on distinct species. The development of the human technology has affected the natural shield of ozone that protects complex lifeforms against damaging UV irradiation. The formation of the ozone hole and its consequences are described, together with the possible contribution of UV radiation to recent climate changes. Finally, we will discuss the the potential role of ultraviolet light in the development of life on bodies such as Mars, Europa and Titan. The Solar System is not isolated; other external sources can contribute to the enhancement of the UV radiation in our environment. The influence of such events as nearby supernovae and gamma-ray bursts are described, together with the consequences to terrestrial life from such events.

Book Description
This volume brings together state-of-the-art views on ultraviolet radiation, its modelling, and effects from an interdisciplinary panel of international experts. The growing field of research is presented in a sequence from the arrival of UV light at the top of the atmosphere through its transfer to various biological receptors. Modelling and current issues on UV radiative transfer in clear and turbid environments are discussed. Further, measurements and calibration methods are reviewed and, for the first time, established calibration protocols are presented in a coherent way.

Description:
In upwelling ecosystems, such as the Humboldt Current system (HCS) off Concepcion, the effects of solar radiation on bacterioplankton incorporation rates have been related to previous light acclimation and responses to irradiance. In this paper, we study the daily effect of Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR, 400-700 nm) and ultraviolet radiation UVR (280-400 nm) on bacterial secondary production (BSP). We also considered the DNA damage-repair response to solar radiation stress by the induction of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). Experiments were conducted with natural bacterioplankton assemblages (0.2-0.7 @mm) collected off Concepcion (36^oS), during the austral Spring, October-November, 2004. Surface (0.5 m) and subsurface (80 m) bacterioplankton samples were exposed to different solar radiation treatments for 5-20 h. BSP was estimated by ^1^4C-leucine and ^3H-thymidine incorporation at several time intervals, whereas CPDs accumulation was assessed using immunoassay techniques. During high irradiance periods, BSP was mainly affected by PAR in both surface and subsurface assemblages and, to a lesser, but significant (Tukey
<0.05) extent, by UV-A (320-400 nm) and UV-B (280-320 nm) radiation. Maximum inhibition of BSP in surface waters was 78%; growth rates (@m) and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) were also low (78% and 66% respectively). Subsurface water assemblages, on the contrary, showed a ~25 fold enhancement of BSP, @m, and BGE. Both types of assemblages had a rapid CPDs accumulation (maximum 60 CPDs Mb^-^1) during high irradiance periods. Recovery of BSP inhibition and DNA damage in surface bacteria was total after sunset and after the night incubation period, resembling pre-exposure levels. Despite subsurface BSP enhancement during day-night exposure, residual DNA damage was detected at the end of the experiment (20 CPDs Mb^-^1) suggesting a chronic DNA damage. Our results represent the worst case scenario (i.e., assemblages receiving surface irradiances as may occur in this upwelling zone) and indicate that surface and subsurface bacterial assemblages in the HCS are both highly sensitive to solar irradiance. However, they showed different responses, with surface bacteria having more effective photorepair mechanisms, and sustaining higher BSP than subsurface assemblages.

Book Description
Computational Rheology for Pipeline and Annular Flow develops and applies modern analytical and computational finite difference methods for solving flow problems in drilling and production. It also provides valuable insights into flow assurance analysis in subsea pipeline design. Using modeling techniques that simulate the motion of non-Newtonian fluids, e.g., power law, Bingham plastic, and Herschel-Bulkley flows, this book presents proven annular flow methodologies for cuttings transport and stuck pipe analysis based on detailed experimental data obtained from highly deviated and horizontal wells. These methods are applied for highly eccentric borehole geometries to the design of pipeline bundles in subsea applications, where such annular configurations arise in velocity and thermal modeling applications.
Also covered extensively are the design and modeling of pipelines having non-circular cross-sections, where deviations from ideal circular geometries arise from plugging due to wax deposition and the presence of hydrates and asphaltenes. As in the case of annular flows, the new algorithms apply to fluids with general rheological description; for example, the methods show very precisely how flow rate and pressure gradient vary nonlinearly in practical problem situations.
* Includes Windows-based software that contains highly integrated, user-friendly color-graphics algorithms (available via the Gulf Professional Publishing website at www.gulfpp.com)
* Provides valuable insights into flow assurance analysis.
* Contains new algorithms on annular flows and fluids with general rheological descriptions supply solutions to practical problems.

Book Description
The colorful Captain John "Mad Jack" Percival was a legend in his time. Known as a seaman of uncommon ability and fearlessness, he led such an extraordinary life that he drew the attention of the famous novelists Hawthorne, Melville, and Michener. The fact that his first and last ships are national shrines has only enhanced his reputation. Percival's naval career began in 1797 when he was impressed into British naval service aboard the HMS Victory and ended in 1846 after taking the USS Constitution on her only around-the-world cruise. This book draws from unpublished journals, letters, and logs to provide previously unknown details about his adventures and the formative years of the U.S. Navy.
Hailing from Cape Cod and recognized by Congress for meritorious action in the War of 1812, Mad Jack fought against the French and British and had the Constitution off the coast of Mexico when war with that country broke out. In between he chased West Indies pirates and Globe mutineers, tussled with South Pacific chieftains, policed distant American whalers and merchantmen, charted unknown waters, quarreled with missionaries, educated and trained midshipmen, and skirmished with local forces in what is now Vietnam. This work is just as entertaining as the tall tales about this heroic figure spun by generations of seamen, but it is completely true.
Customer Reviews:
Is this all there is to know about John ýMad Jacký Percival?.......2003-01-12
Having spent time right around the corner from the West Barnstable, Massachusetts cemetery where Percival is buried and also being familiar with the USS Constitution Museum and the ship itself, I wanted to know more. This book's narrative does provide details about Percival's life and the U.S. Navy that he served in, but they seem a bit thin.
It seems that existing documentary evidence of Percival is sparse, or at least this book leads me to believe that. Percival's 1844-1846 circumnavigation of the world in the Constitution gets the longest chapter, and is only 35 pages long. Little context is given to this voyage, surely the most remarkable phase of Percival's career. According to Ellis, Percival commanded five ships (with gun ratings, which Ellis provides only infrequently): Dolphin, 12, Porpoise, 12, Erie?, Cyane, 18, and Constitution, 44.
At times this feels like nothing but the documented facts of Percival's life strung together as a report, with a focus on quelling any "controversy". West Barnstable resident Ellis certainly did a great deal of serious research, but I was hoping for something more than just a book length vindication of the charges of dishonesty David H. Long makes in his Percival biography (the only other full length treatment of the subject).

Love, loss and devotion.......2007-08-17
Even though it has been years passed and I just heard about this book and read it. It was a real awakener to me and my thanking God that my three children all grew up with no illinesses other than the norms. My hat off to Antoinette for her courage and the love she had and shared with Andrei. She showed me how much strength she had through all that she went through but she especially showed me that she never gave up and did it for her son who I know is still watching over her. Thank you Antoinette, I wish that people who have children would love them even when they are not ill. May God bless you and your family.
Great book for anyone dealing with a sick child.......2005-08-30
I love this book for its honesty and courageness of the Author. I recommend this book to anyone who needs help getting through lifes hills and valleys.
Wonderful insight - My Angel Andrei.......2004-07-28
Highly recommend this wonderful book, for anyone faced with a cancer diagnosis, but also for those that want an insight into the life of a remarkable young mother, her son and the emotional rollercoaster ride they faced while living with cancer and how life can continue, having learnt through the lessons taught.
BROUGHT A PERSONAL AWAKENING TO MY LIFE, TOUCHED EMOTIONALLY.......2002-05-08
I was emotionally touched by the accounts of the author's personal story. As devastating as it was, I was more touched by the author's courage in overcoming such a great loss as a child's life. She is truly a real HERO in my eyes. I, a mother of two small children, and having never experienced such a loss, learned to appreciate even the smallest detail of my own children's life and health after reading this book. I recommend this book to every mother so that you can feel blessed and fortunate. This book emotionally touched and changed my Life.
Inspiring & Touching.......2002-04-28
It is amazing how much strenght this author has. She does a wonderful job at expressing her feelings with the readers and at the same time giving us a positive out look on life. I must say this book touched my heart like no other novel has. Her ability to share this tragedy in such a warm and touching way, teaches those more fortunate to really appreciate their loved ones. It is always a pleasure to read a book, but to read a book that leaves such an impact is a thrill like no other.
