Book Description
Job migration across international boundaries and jobless economic "recoveries" are the latest disruptions in the workplace's human equation. To help policy makers, employers and employees to address these issues, DiVanna and Rogers propose a more rigorous approach to human capital. They point out that the emergence of stronger measures, management techniques and balance sheet valuations was a key enabler to the emergence of dynamic financial capital markets and international exchanges. This book puts forth a framework for measuring, managing and negotiating issues of human business value. It looks at how policymakers, employers and employees can achieve common ground when productivity threatens job loss or avoid the zero-sum view that pits international trade against domestic employment.

Book Description
Ranching and Texas remain synonymous for people around the world, although our knowledge of ranch life more often comes from the movies than from herding cattle on the Panhandle Plains. Yet there still are Texans for whom ranching is a daily way of life, and this book tells their stories.
Through Lawrence Clayton's words and Wyman Meinzer's evocative black-and-white photographs, you will visit sixteen working ranches across Texas: Alta Vista, Canales, Catarina, O'Connor, and Ray in South Texas; R. A. Brown, Chimney Creek, Goodnight, J A, Moorhouse, Nail, and Renderbrook Spade in the Panhandle and Northwest Texas; and Henderson Cove, Hudspeth River, Long X, and Hoskins 101 in the Trans-Pecos. Many of these ranches trace their beginnings to the open range, and all of them are known today for running a quality "outfit."
Clayton recounts the history and current operation of each ranch, often drawing on stories handed down over generations. Quotes from ranch owners and employees give a feel for the challenges and rewards of modern-day ranching and also underscore how much ranching varies across the different regions of Texas. Meinzer's photographs capture the endless prairies and the weather-worn faces of the men and women who work the cattle, as well as the tools of their trade. For everyone fascinated by Texas ranching, this book offers enjoyable reading and viewing of this proud and increasingly rare way of life.

Book Description
This book conveys the thrill of observing strange and surprising features of the Universe, and the satisfaction gained by understanding them through modern science. Using simple analogies and a wealth of illustrations, Professor Narlikar skilfully steers us through a cosmic journey of discovery, starting from the Earth and Solar System and stepping out to the farthest reaches of the Universe. The seven wonders represent a range of mysterious phenomena, a class of spectacular events, or remarkable cosmic objects that have challenged human curiosity and explanation. They concern the giants and dwarfs of the stellar world, the catastrophic explosion of massive stars, pulsars - the ultimate timekeepers of the cosmos, the strange effects of gravity, illusions of space, and the majestic expansion of the Universe as a whole. With lucid prose and humorous anecdotes, the author weaves together a host of exciting recent discoveries in astronomy and shows us how these motivate astronomers to unravel the wonders of tomorrow.

Book Description
Modelling in Transport Phenomena is intended as an introduction to Transport Phenomena courses. Although it is written for students majoring in chemical engineering, it can also be used as a reference or a supplementary text in environmental, mechanical, petroleum and civil engineering courses. It has been designed in order to help students understand basic concepts that are usually difficult to grasp. These concepts are clearly explained within this text and their applications to fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, chemical reaction engineering and thermodynamics are presented through appropriate example problems. The author presents a balanced approach between synthesis and analysis. Systematic derivations of the equations as well as the physical significance of each term are given in detail so that the students can easily understand and follow up the presented material.

Description:
The Integrated Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IP-SOFC) is an innovative fuel cell concept which is substantially a cross between tubular and planar geometries, seeking to borrow thermal compliance properties from the former and low cost component fabrication and short current paths from the latter. In this study, a simulation model for the IP-SOFC is presented, with particular highlight on the simulation of the local reaction, taking into account the chemical and electrochemical processes occurring at the electrodes, together with mass transport issues. Some aspects of the overall reactor simulation are discussed as well. The model results have been compared to the experimental data obtained from both a small scale IP-SOFC module and a full-size prototype; in both cases the agreement is good. This electrochemical model is the basis of a detailed model of the full-scale IP-SOFC reactor to be included into a plant simulation tool designed to support thermodynamic analysis of hybrid IP-SOFC/GT (Gas Turbine) systems.

Book Description
The process of growing crystals from the melt is now a crucial technology for the electronics, opto-electronics and microelectronics industries. Crystal quality is significantly influenced by the melt flow and related heat and mass transfer, and it is therefore important to understand the elementary processes which play a significant role during their growth.
This book demonstrates how advanced mathematical, physical and numerical modelling can be used to analyse these processes. Representing the collective work of experts from six countries, it includes recent major developments in both fundamentals and applications, and provides valuable information for both researchers and students working in this area.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth having.......2003-09-09
This slender volume attempts to present, as the preface says, a detailed review of the most important numerical analysis techniques for calculating modes and beam propagation in optical waveguides and fibers. If that's what you're after and you're not already expert in this area, it's well worth buying. The authors are both long-time practioners of these arcane arts in major Japanese firms, and it shows. On the other hand, it was originally written in Japanese and the authors are industrial researchers, not teachers; and to some extent that shows also. But I'm glad to have it, haven't encountered anything better in this area, and have no hesitation in recommending it.

Strange Defeat
ASIN: 0521406714 |
Book Description
This is the first biography of Marc Bloch (1886–1944), historian, soldier in both world wars, and leader of the Resistance, who was captured, tortured, and died a heroic death. Based largely on Bloch's private letters, diaries and papers, as well as on other unpublished documents, it traces the remarkable life of this French-Jewish patriot under the Third Republic. As an historian, Bloch is perhaps best known for The Historian’s Craft, an inspiring set of meditations on his life’s work, and as co-founder of the now legendary journal Annales, which gave rise to a major school of historical writing. Profoundly influenced by the dark events that shaped his era - world wars, anti-semitism, and totalitarianism - Bloch has become something of an intellectual hero of our century, his life an epitome of the endeavour to uphold, in the face of such events, the spirit of unfettered critical enquiry.
