The Conquest of Bread will make compelling reading for anyone interested in California and its history, the history of agriculture, or simply how society works. For Walker, the answers are not to be found in the intersects of supply and demand curves and neo-liberal theory, supposedly applicable to every time and place, but rather in how particular classes, groups, and social forces have come together over the last 150 years to produce California agribusiness, a social phenomenon as staggering in its success and productivity as it is in its levels of human exploitation and environmental degradation.

a strong argument against academic tenure.......2005-01-21

Here is an educated man, isolated from peer review, re-warming ancient, pointless Populist ideas about a subject he knows only by association. Without the bulwark of tenure, he could have been challenged to have written something less formulaic and outdated.
What is more the pity is that he cares about his subject; he is just not used to having to defend his ideas, so he just comes off as a boring, monomoniacal old professor. One without an editor.

This is an excellent elementary introduction to numerical analysis, only basic math is required. It is fun and easy to read. This is a "small" book; the largest section (linear equations) being 66 pages. However, it does cover a lot of ground.

In this follow-up to Afternotes on Numerical Analysis (SIAM, 1996) the author continues to bring the immediacy of the classroom to the printed page. Like the original undergraduate volume, Afternotes Goes to Graduate School is the result of the author writing down his notes immediately after giving each lecture; in this case the afternotes are the result of a follow-up graduate course taught by Professor Stewart at the University of Maryland. The algorithms presented in this volume require deeper mathematical understanding than those in the undergraduate book, and their implementations are not trivial. Stewart uses a fresh presentation that is clear and intuitive as he covers topics such as discrete and continuous approximation, linear and quadratic splines, eigensystems, and Krylov sequence methods. He concludes with two lectures on classical iterative methods and nonlinear equations.

A work of fiction based on factual people.......2005-02-10

I live in the area where all the Blalock's called home (Keith Blalock) is buried about 4 miles from my home). After purchasing and reading the book, I tried to locate some of the sources listed in the bibliography that were supposedly housed at Appalachain State Library in Boone, NC. These sources DO NOT EXIST according to the head of the NC room at the library. As a historical book, its "facts" are fictional. As a fiction book, it does provide interesting reading.

Woman Warrior of Western North Carolina.......2003-07-21

Malinda Blalock , the young mountain woman who fought along side her husband in the Civil War in the North Carolina mountains deserves to be much more famous than she is. In 1862, dressed as a boy, Malinda Blalock enlisted in the Confederacy,when her husband Keith was conscripted. When Keith received a medical discharge, Malinda went back to the mountains with him, and the pair became Union bushwackers for the duration of the war. Malinda's tale of courage and determination is an inspiration, and a wonderful look at the other side of the South: the one in which women were not "belles" to be protected, but comrades who did a man's job a century before such a lifestyle became fashionable. Peter Stevens' book is a introduction to the story of Malinda, but many of his "facts" are wrong, and for examples of her daily living he cites examples of rural life from the autobiographical works of Emma Bell Miles, a writer who lived 50 years later in another state-- hardly an accurate portrayal. Ironically, the most accurate account to date of the life and times of Malinda Blalock is not a non-fiction book, but a novel. "Ghost Riders" by Sharyn McCrumb is wonderfully written, meticulously researched, with three pages of source materials. It tells the real story of Malinda in cinematic clarity, with the virtue of accuracy. Malinda Blalock is a woman well worth remembering, and at last she has a book to do her justice-- read "Ghost Riders"!

Would Make a Great Novel.......2002-02-23

This is the nonfiction telling of a married couple from North Carolina who both served in both the Confederate and Union Armies during the Civil War. It would make a great novel, but the story is told here with a few too many footnotes and not enough about the intriguing Malinda. It makes me curious to know about other women who may have served in the Civil War disguised as men.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS BOOK FOR YEARS.......2000-10-05

I am the grt. grt. grt. grt. niece of the "daring and notoriuous" Col. George W. Kirk. Over the years I have done a great deal of research on Kirk, and, as the author did, often came across mention of the Blalocks, and I, too, was fascinated by the couple. From what I knew of the Rebels in Blue, I was certain that if someone could do the research and connect all of the fragmented material the result would be a fantastic thriller, full of real-life colorful characters. It is a story of loyalty and rebelion, devotion and betrayal, love and hate,freinds and foes,survival and death, heroes and villains - the story of my family's heritage as well as our nation's. The end result of Steven's writing the book that I had longed for far exceeded my expectations, and I am certain that any who read Rebels in Blue will agree that this story is well worth reading.

Great Civil War Biography of the Blalocks.......2000-08-25

I found this book strictly by accident at the library. Being a Civil War buff all my life and reading any biography I can get my hands on during that period, I was really thrilled when I came across this book.

It is wonderful to read about Keith and Malinda Blalock and all they endured and suffered. A great accounting of their lives and those around them. Their exploits in the mountains of North Carolina was riviting. I couldn't put this book down.

The only disappointment was the author did not get more into Keith and Malinda's lives and the lives of their children once they returned to their home after the war. It would have been interesting to read about their children that they had and their lives.

The author did a wonderful job researching the Blalocks and all that they lived through.

A must read for any history-loving person who loves biographies.

That Obscure Subject of Desire is an interdisciplinary collection of essays on the topic of Freud's "Psychogenesis of a Case of Homosexuality in a Woman." Freud's case study has received very little attention, which the editors argue is a sign of the marginalizing of lesbians both in psychoanalytic theory and in culture. This book provides a much-needed forum to discuss the case and its relevance to contemporary concerns --including the compatibility of psychoanalysis and queer theory and the viability of writing unbiased psychoanalytic accounts of lesbian development.

The collection also brings to life two dramas played out in Freud's case: the personal drama of his power struggle with his subject, and the pervasive anti-Semitism of his social world, which he projected onto women and gay/lesbian individuals. Putting Freud's vision into context, the contributors provide a corrective to the current trend of dismissing his works and show that there remains much to consider and value in his thinking.

I stumbled upon this book by accident (no Freudian slip intended) but decided to buy it because lesbian/gay people/issues are so much a part of the fabric of American life in the 21st Century. The book is a collection of interdisciplinary essays and therefore provides a diversified approach to Freud's case study and work in this area that can be applied to gay issues in the news today, ranging from the Supreme Court's Boy/Girl Scout decision to Dick Cheyney's evolving attitude towards his gay daughter. Because the essayists are from different fields, I found this book to be a real eye-opener into the world of female homosexuality. I totally recommend the book to anyone who would like to read a thoughtful, innovative collection of essays on this subject. The book gave me a lot to think about, which in my view is the highest accolade.

A cogent, compelling collection of essays edited with a keen ear for the nuance and power of its distinct viewpoint. In the life or not, in the field or not, the book launches you on a provocative odyssey, jammed packed with rich opportunities for re-examination and re-evaluation of Freud's theories of female sexuality.
