1 out of 5 stars Dun & Bradstreet Guide-Nancy Dunnan.......2002-04-23

I ordered this book on March 2, 2002 and it still hasn't arrived. How can I rate a book I didn't receive? I wish to delete this book and substitute another but find no procedure to do this. Can you help me do this?

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......1999-04-06

This is really a terrific resource, especially for an investing novice like myself. I would urge anyone who wants to start investing and have no clue how too get this book. It clears up so much confusion and answers so many questions. Its paid for itself and then some already.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners; just use patience.......1999-02-19

This book (which comes out in an updated version every year) is a great way to learn about financial planning, investing, and so forth. The lessons inside can (and SHOULD) be used by anyone.

It might seem overwhelming at first, because it's over 400 pages. Take it in little bits and pieces. It's easy to read, explains all the different things you can do in investing, and broken down in such a way that it works for small investors or big ones, for long-term retirement planning or for "how to live right now" type financial stuff.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best written, most complete investment guide.......1998-10-14

When it comes to investing, whether in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, Treasuries, CDs, real estate, or marbles (yes, marbles), you've got to know the territory. To do that, get this guide -- the best written, most complete, easiest to understand, regularly updated book on investments.

Make Your Pay System Pay Off

A comprehensive look at not only the choices surrounding the development of a pay system but also the pros and cons associated with each choice....Thorough.
--HR Magazine

In this seminal work, acclaimed compensation expert Edward Lawler III shows companies that the way they pay can be an important source of competitive advantage. He reveals how pay strategies that draw a clear connection between pay and performance can support an organization's strategic objectives by communicating unmistakably what that organization values most. Moreover, he examines a wide range of performance-based pay practices--from piecework incentive systems to merit pay and skill-based pay--to demonstrate how compensation systems can be tailored to fit a variety of business strategies and management styles. Both traditional and nontraditional pay strategies are examined, with special emphasis given to designing pay systems that support participatory management and other innovative practices.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A pioneering study on the new pay........1999-09-30

"Why this book is written? ...Because during this decade organizations became more willing to try new pay practices. This willingness to deviate from traditional pay practices undoubtedly stemmed from the fact that, because the old ways were often inadequate, organizations sought new approaches to management. In the search for new ways to manage, pay was one of a number of practices that underwent scrunity and, in some cases, important chance... I wrote it because I wanted to demonstrate how important pay system design choices are to the ultimate effectiveness of an organization. I hope that it will put to rest the idea that pay is simply a cost for an organization, make it clear that making the right choices with respect to pay practices and processes is vital to an organization's effectiveness, and establish that pay practices can provide a definite competitive advantage (from the preface)."

I highly recommend this pioneering study to all HR professionals and executives.

    Book Description

At the current rate of increase, the world's population is likely to reach ten billion by the middle of the twenty-first century. What will be the challenges posed by feeding this population and how can they be addressed? Written to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of Malthus' seminal Essay on the Principle of Population, this fascinating book looks at the intimate links between population growth and agricultural innovation over the past 10,000 years, illustrating how the evolution of agriculture has both shaped and been shaped by the course of world population growth. This historical context serves to illuminate our present position and to aid understanding of possible future paths to food security for the planet. This volume is a unique and accessible account that will be of interest to a wide audience concerned with global population, food supply, agricultural development, environmental degradation and resource depletion.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent history of population and agriculture........1999-09-10

This work is an efficient survey of agriculture and its relation to population growth through history. The chapters are designed to focus on population growth through time. For example chapter 2 is: Reaching for 5 million ( to 8000BC); chapter 3 is: Towards 50 million ( 8000-2000BC); chapter 4 is: The first half-billion ( 2000BC-1500AD); chapter 5 is: Towards the first billion (1500-1825) etc. Under each heading is a discussion of the critical agricultural developments during that time period. The last chapter focuses on the problems of feeding 10 billion people in the future. The research is detailed and knowledgable. The sources are modern and uptodate. The writing is precise. It is an excellent book that covers a lot of ground in a small compass. Highly recommended.

            Book Description

FROM THE AUTHOR'S PREFACE This book . . . is focused on the structure and function relationships of the four major hydrolytic enzymes, cellulases, cellobiohydrolases, b-glucosidases, and xylanases as it relates to their mechanism of action. It should be of interest to biotechnologists and industrial researchers interested in manipulating these enzymes to their full potential as catalysts for various current and new applications. It begins with an overview of the nature of cellulose and heteroxylan, followed by a description of the enzymes involved in its hydrolysis, their general structure, characteristics, and classification. Chapter 3 discusses how these various enzymes are integrated and associated for the efficient solubilization of cellulose and heteroxylan. This includes a review of the literature concerning the cellulosomes and other cellulolytic complexes. The chapter on production and purification provides an overview of this subject matter. . . . These first four chapters thus set the stage for the more comprehensive discussion of the mechanism of action of each of the primary hydrolases which follows. . . . [T]he data pertaining to the catalytic mechanism of both the retaining and inverting forms of these enzymes since such studies were initiated on cellulases . . . in 1954 is reviewed in Chapter 5. The book concludes with an overview of the mode of action of the enzymes and a discussion, citing a few examples, of how the modern methods of molecular biology, enzymology, and X-ray crystallography are being used to manipulate selected enzymes for a variety of biotechnological and industrial purposes. The information in this new book will be of value to scientists and researchers working in the areas of biochemistry, botany, crop science, ecology, microbiology and mycology, in addition to those in the forestry and forest product industries.

                          Book Description

The biochemistry and molecular biology of wood is important to elucidate the characteristics of wood as a biomaterial. For the understanding of the properties of wood and wood components, it is necessary to investigate the characterization of genes encoding enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of wood components, the differentiation of the cambium into phloem and xylem, and the mechanisms of the expression of these genes. The author gives an overview of the rapidly progressing research in the relatively new field of molecular biology of trees and wood.

                            Book Description

Progress in the theory of economic equilibria and in game theory has proceeded hand in hand with that of the mathematical tools used in the field, namely nonlinear analysis and, in particular, convex analysis. Jean-Pierre Aubin, one of the leading specialists in nonlinear analysis and its application to economics, has written a rigorous and concise - yet still elementary and self-contained - textbook providing the mathematical tools needed to study optima and equilibria, as solutions to problems, arising in economics, management sciences, operations research, cooperative and non-cooperative games, fuzzy games etc. It begins with the foundations of optimization theory, and mathematical programming, and in particular convex and nonsmooth analysis. Nonlinear analysis is then presented, first game-theoretically, then in the framework of set valued analysis. These results are then applied to the main classes of economic equilibria. The book contains numerous exercises and problems: the latter allow the reader to venture into areas of nonlinear analysis that lie beyond the scope of the book and of most graduate courses.

As a member of a distinguished South Carolina family, Matthew Calbraith Butler led a most interesting life. His cavalry service during the Civil War saw him rise from regimental captain to major general in command of a division. He began the war with J.E.B. Stuart and participated in all of his early campaigns. Butler was wounded in the battle at Brandy Station and lost his foot as a result, but he returned to duty and the battles outside of Richmond in 1864, then hurried South to resist Sherman's advance into South Carolina. Unlike many other Confederate generals, Butler remained influential after the War. He served in the U.S. Senate for eighteen years, oversaw the end of Reconstruction in South Carolina, and was a major general during the Spanish-American War.
