Ok book.......2007-01-09

I thought it would be more technical, it's an ok introduction to vermiculture.

I bought this book because I live in a city, have a moderate size backyard and know without a doubt that I can join the ranks of hundreds of other worm growers around the US by growing worms and selling them on a monthly basis. I have just started my worm farm and have found every page of this book invaluable.

Peter Bogdanov is the president of VermiCo which is the leader in earthworm information and technology. His book is one of the best on the market today for anyone who would like to understand how they, with a minimal investment, can start their own profitable worm farm in the city, the suburbs or in a rural area.

Peter's book literally takes you by the hand... He explains commercial vermiculture (raising worms for profit) and gives you a clear picture as to where it started, where it is today and where it's going. The last part really excited me - where worm farming is going is so incredible.

The next section is devoted to answering every question most worm raising nubies ask. I sense that these questions and answers come directly from Peter's willingness to educate the public for the last twenty years. Incidentally, I'm going to one of his internationally famous seminars in October 2000 where he brings the top people in the industry together for a long information packed two days.

The next section details how to get started. These details are split up for the hobbyist, medium size farmer or for the person who wants to go for the gold and be a large scale worm farmer.

Following this comes great instructions on monitoring conditions in your worm beds. This is invaluable since many folks think you can do this by just tossing a few worms in a box and seeing what happens. Worm farming is ALMOST that easy but to be successful you have to know a little more than that!

Next come details on all the different ways you can feed your worms and also eliminate and worries about pests and predators (not a big problem for most folks).

Following this comes instructions on harvesting, (all the different ways to get your worms out of their worm bin) packaging and shipping, (how to avoid things like having 40 pounds of soggy worms let loose in the back of your UPS driver's truck) .

Peter then gives a really decent explanation of castings (worm poop) that drives home the point that you can profit in so many different ways from raising worms.

The book finishes up with a summary overview of worms yesterday, today and tomorrow, how one can basically guarantee their success and additional ways to profit from this fun and lucrative business.

While brief and concise, this book is NOT shallow, not necessarily JUST for the nubie and as far as I am concerned worth every penny. If you are just getting started or if you are already keeping worms and want to move into the commercial direction than this book really might be for you.

One thing kind of floored me - there are very few books available on Amazon regarding worms at this time. However, there are MANY excellent books out there - MANY! You will find a number of additional titles in Peter's catalogue and I recommend reading as many sources of information as you can because like anything in life, every expert finds their unique way to "skin a cat". I know Peter would encourage you to read widely as well, so start with his book, get on his mailing list and go for it!

The concept of a period of an elliptic integral goes back to the 18th century. Later Abel, Gauss, Jacobi, Legendre, Weierstrass and others made a systematic study of these integrals. Rephrased in modern terminology, these give a way to encode how the complex structure of a two-torus varies, thereby showing that certain families contain all elliptic curves. Generalizing to higher dimensions resulted in the formulation of the celebrated Hodge conjecture, and in an attempt to solve this, Griffiths generalized the classical notion of period matrix and introduced period maps and period domains which reflect how the complex structure for higher dimensional varieties varies. The basic theory as developed by Griffiths is explained in the first part of the book. Then, in the second part spectral sequences and Koszul complexes are introduced and are used to derive results about cycles on higher dimensional algebraic varieties such as the Noether-Lefschetz theorem and Nori's theorem. Finally, in the third part differential geometric methods are explained leading up to proofs of Arakelov-type theorems, the theorem of the fixed part, the rigidity theorem, and more. Higgs bundles and relations to harmonic maps are discussed, and this leads to striking results such as the fact that compact quotients of certain period domains can never admit a Kahler metric or that certain lattices in classical Lie groups can't occur as the fundamental group of a Kahler manifold.

Using oral histories with African American activists and community leaders, Kim Lacy Rogers explores the civil rights movement in several Mississippi communities in the context of the region's history of white supremacy, racial oppression, and African American cultural vitality. Terrorism, black poverty, and economic exploitation led to a condition of collective trauma and social suffering for thousands of black Deltans in the twentieth century. This work reveals the impact of that oppression, and of African American traditions of community service and leadership in the lives of women and men who became activists. It also examines the disillusionment and anger that many Delta leaders feel about the changes that took place during the post-movement years.

In August 1955, the mutilated body of Emmett Till -- a fourteen-year-old black Chicago youth -- was pulled from Mississippi's Tallahatchie River. Abducted, severely beaten, and finally thrown into the river with a weight fastened around his neck with barbed wire, Till, an eighth-grader, was killed for allegedly whistling at a white woman. The nation was horrified by Till's death. In this sensitive inquiry, historian Stephen J. Whitfield probes Till's death; its ideological roots; the potent myths concerning race, sexuality, and violence; and the incident's enduring effects on American national life. As he recreates the trial, its participants, and the social structure of the Delta, Whitfield examines how white rural Mississippians actually tried "two of their own." Though they were acquitted, these same defendants were soon being ostracized by their own neighbors, and within four months of Till's death, Southern blacks were staging the historic Montgomery bus boycott -- the first major battle in the coming war against racial injustice that would lead to the passage of civil rights legislation a decade later.

Not only did this book provide great in-depth details of the Till murder, but it also provided a great narrative on how the murder affected and possibly jump started the civil rights movement. I'll rate it 4 out of 5 stars...

Gary Smith does an excellent job of documenting the life of a Navy Seal in the VN conflict. His book talks not only of his missions, and his off duty time, but includes descriptions of the Viet Namese people as well.

It is a very well written book that takes a good look at the SEALs in Vietnam. It is very detailed and makes you think you were really in these situations.

Great Book.......1999-03-30

Gary Smith tells about his five tours of duty as a Navy Seal in Vietnam through three different books: Death in the Jungle, Death in the Delta and Master Chief. All of these well written books are exceptional in that they not only tell the story of terror filled seconds during battle, but Smith also talks about the sheer boredom and mundane tasked that must be done. His stories about killing VC - VC ants that is, while waiting on ambushes are funny in otherwise near death incounters. Smith is able to talk about the inhumane acts that occur in war just as he is able to talk about the fun times. I was brought to tears while reading about the mother and baby killed during an ambush of a Junk and equally shed tears of laughter when he cooked "Venison" that barked!

Smith does an exceptional job interspersing Vietnamese words and phrases in all three books which gives the read a sense that Smith was a professional that took the time to increase his advantage by learning their language. The one criticism I can point out is that he listed too many of the overnight ambushes. It became hard to distinguish one from another after awhile. I also get the feeling that there is much more to tell about his tour with the PRU but that it might bring up too many unpleasant memories.

Finally, Smith makes a one sentence statement that Captain Gormly was one of the best COs he ever served under which speaks volumes about both warriors. A Very good set of books and I recommend these to anyone interested in getting a birds eye view of war from a Seal's perspective.

"Crazy Visitation": A Quiet Storm of Inspiration.......2001-08-29

What Saundra Murray Nettles has done in her narrative, "Crazy Visitations", is transcend the inherent, self-imposed limitation of western psychology... what she has done is summon the courage to open a path to bring spirit into psychology. Summoning this courage is, in itself, a miracle given the fact that so many African-American women suffer from a rare and lethal strain of fear; the by-product of innumerous years of unfathomable racism, sexism, and oppression. Yet, Dr. Nettles emerges... a beautiful warrior-poet willing to follow her inner-compass toward reconstruction. What makes Dr. Nettles' narrative so compelling is that she has managed to prepare a pathway for spirit to take its rightful place as focus point of the field of psychology. After reading her story, it is quite evident that human beings cannot define or attempt to fully understand their true selves in terms of behavior, innate abilities and processes, and/or personality traits, because these things are easily manipulated by outside persons and/or objects (e.g. "an orange-sized meningioma"). Apparently there is something more to the human experience than meets the eye - an eye that has for far too long been pathologically concerned with finding physical, empirical "proof." I believe that "something more" is spirit. This word has not had any place whatsoever in the field and I believe this is why western psychology will always fall short of finding those "universal truths" it so relentlessly pursues. The absence of spirit in the field has led us to a plateau where there is an abundance of empirical data, but limited, superficial progress in using that information to better humanity. Psychologists must realize their role as healers and, even further, understand the profound implications of this role. Dr. Nettles' narrative makes it unquestionably clear that this is thoroughly understood in her spirit and is beginning to take verbal shape in her consciousness. She has taken the time to critically reflect on her experiences, not as isolated events, but rather as a process that is constantly moving her toward her highest good. As such, Dr. Nettles is in a state of continual healing and renewal that radiates to all that come to know her story. I once heard something to the effect that it was truly sad that so many wonderful, brilliant people pass through this life nameless -- leaving behind a legacy of profound achievement and decency -- before anyone got a chance to simply say, "thank you." Right now, Saundra Murray Nettles, I say thank you. You are an inspiration and I am so grateful that our paths have crossed.
