A Very Practical Reference for NJ Natural Areas.......2001-08-16

This books lists almost 250 parks, forests and other natural areas throughout the state of NJ and describes the recreational activities and facilities at each. Activities include fishing, boating, hunting, picnicing, camping, swimming and more. Also included are phone numbers for administrative offices and town recreational departments. The book is nicely organized by county regions and although no maps are included, directions for each area from a major highway are outlined.

Two specialized new instruments for ESO's VLT, VISIR and CRIRES, spawned the idea for this workshop. CRIRES is a dedicated very high resolution infrared spectrograph; VISIR features a high resolution spectroscopic mode. Together, the instruments combine the sensitivity of an 8m-telescope with the now well-established reliability of VLT-facility instruments. High resolution here means that lines in cool stellar atmospheres and H _II-regions can be resolved. The astrophysical topics discussed in this rather specialized workshop range from the inner solar system to active galactic nuclei. There are many possibilities for new discoveries with these instruments, but the unique capability, which becomes available through high-resolution infrared spectroscopy, is the observation of molecular rotational-vibrational transitions in many astrophysical environments. Particularly interesting and surprising in this context, many papers on modeling and laboratory spectroscopy at the workshop appear to indicate that astronomical observations are lagging a bit behind in this field. The papers are an interesting mix of reports from existing high resolution facilities, reports on modeling efforts of synthetic spectra and reports on laboratory spectra. In this sense, a fruitful exchange between molecular physics and astronomy was again accomplished and is documented in this volume.

The Theory of Search Games and Rendezvous widens the dimensions to the classical problem with the addition of an independent player of equal status to the searcher, who cares about being found or not being found. These multiple motives of searcher and hider are analytically and mathematically considered in the book's two foci: Search Games (Book I) and Rendezvous Theory (Book II).
Shmuel Gal's work on Search Games (Gal, 1980) stimulated considerable research in a variety of fields including Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, and Economics. Steve Alpern's original formulation of the rendezvous search problem in 1976 and his formalization of the continuous version (Alpern, 1995) have led to much research in rendezvous theory in the past few years. New material is covered in both Search Games (Book I) and Rendezvous Theory (Book II). The book examines a whole variety of new configurations of theory and problems that arise from these two aspects of the analysis - resulting in a penetrating state-of-the-art treatment of this highly useful mathematical, analytical tool.

Two players are lost in a grid of city streets and wish to meet as soon as possible. Knowing only the distribution of the other's initial location (two nodes away in one of the four compass directions), how do they move from intersection to intersection (between nodes of the lattice Z^2) to achieve this? We assume that they do not have common compass directions to coordinate on, but that they can use their common notion of clockwise. We show that the latter, realistic assumption, can aid them in expediting their meeting (relative to a previous rendezvous problem which did not allow this). We also solve the easier 'streets and avenues' version of the problem, in which the players can distinguish between the axes (between streets and avenues). We discover several new phenomena which have not been seen before in planar rendezvous.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I have so much respect for Denton and the prisoners of war he was held in captivity with for over 7 years. It amazes me that anyone could survive within that environment. These soldiers helped each other survive under great distress -- even while many of them were in solitary confinement and their story is amazing. This book isn't just a recap of Denton's experience; it contains deeply thoughtful content throughout the book about love, patriotism, encouragement and more. There is much wisdom contained in this book. I learned a lot and highly recommend it to others.

Humbling.......2005-01-26

Mr. Denton and his fellow POWs are the very definition of the the word hero. In this book, Mr. Denton tells the story of his 7+ years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam with grace, dignity, and courage. His great love for the United States and his pride in being an American are evident again and again. He endured unspeakable agony and conditions so horrible they are beyond my comprehension, yet he never wavered in his love for his country, his family, and his God. I am humbled and overwhelmed at the sacrifices this man (and many others) have made on my behalf. The despicable act of the California state "leadership" and Fabian Nunez in barring Mr. Denton from speaking before a California Assembly on Independence Day 2004 is reprehensible and disgusting.

Thank you, Mr. Denton! You deserve our undying gratitude.

It must have been hell.......2004-10-31

Here is yet another first rate tale of an American P.O.W. in North Vietnam. The prisoner is Navy pilot Jeremiah Denton, who was based on the carrier "Independence". His A6 aircraft was shot down in July of 1965. Denton spent the following 8+ years in captivity until the general release in the Spring of 1973. The title refers to the torture "sessions" Denton and his colleagues suffered at the hands of their captors. This reviewer has read several P.O.W. accounts. While all are similar in that they demonstrate great bravery and perseverance in brutal situations, each is also unique: WHWS focuses on the military command structures that existed in prison despite rigorous Vietnamese efforts to stymie them. The senior military commanders/prisoners like Admiral Stockdale, Colonel Robinson Risner and others obviously possessed a tremendous pride and strove to imbue that pride in all P.O.Ws. Denton pulls few punches. It startled this observer to learn that not all prisoners always agreed with the "program" and not all P.O.W.s were the best of buddies behind the walls. The author stresses the ubiquitous "tap code" that allowed communication within the prison walls. There is even an introductory chart to tapping! Denton glosses over his 4(!) years in solitary and concentrates on the other 4 years he was free to "mingle" with his fellow Americans. There is a noticeable lack of venom and bitterness toward the North Vietnamese in the text. The reader may suspect that Denton has come to terms with his years in the Hanoi Hilton and other garden spots of the North. WHWS is rated 5 stars with only 2 minor demerits: One is the absence of ANY maps. Most war books gloss over maps but surely the publisher could have inserted one! The other weakness is the appallingly small type in my paperback edition. Those interested in Admiral/Senator Denton's story may wish to verify before purchase how the many available editions of WHWS handle these issues.

When hell was in session.......2004-10-23

When I was 15 my father came into my bedroom and threw a small paperback book at a sleepy unmotivated teenager. He didn't say anything: just left me to think. I got around to reading this book when I was a searching young 18 year old and it changed my life and the direction it was taking. Mr. Denton hasn't written A literary work of art, but he has put down in words what every heart yearns to understand. He taught what honor is and how much the human spirit can endure. Courage is only a word used by those who do not entirely understand the concept. I never ask what is important in life, I do relish every second of my freedom not to think about that question, however. Thank you Mr. Denton for that freedom.

Memorable.......2004-07-16

If there is one thing you can say about this book, it is that it is memorable. A friend of mine recently sent me a letter that mentioned this book and it brought back the memories of when I read it many years ago. The thing that I remember most about this book was Denton's deep faith in God, and how it sustained him through his ordeal in the North Vietnamese prison system during the Viet Nam war. Another thing I recall was the picture it painted of American servicemen keeping themselves united during an impossible situation. Denton's amazing courage and ingenuity by blinking his eyes to spell out the word "TORTURE" (in Morse Code) during a filmed interview is one of the most incredible events of the American POW chapter of the Viet Nam War. Denton's (and the rest of the Ameican POWs) ability to maintain sanity while suffering through such conditions is a testament to the American spirit, and it makes one think deeply about what it means to be an American. This book should be required reading for anyone who an interest in the Viet Nam War, American Military heritage, or just in American patriotism in the most extreme of circumstances. I highly recommend it.
