What to Say When You Talk to Your Self
ASIN: 0814405282 |
Book Description
Change management is a high priority on every corporate agenda these days. But even the fattest budgets and the most brilliant strategies won't do the job if managers don't put the right people in the right positions.
This refreshingly different approach to change management is based on a simple and eye-opening premise: that organizational change happens one person at a time. Using the author's unique "personal change capacity" model, it shows managers how to identify and develop people according to their potential:
* A-players, who thrive in pivotal change positions * B-players, happy to provide support and take on some new challenges * C-players, solid performers, but not comfortable with change * D-players, whose resistance to change is so strong that the company may be better off without them.
Based on a proven, battle-tested process developed at major companies, this down-to-earth guide is enhanced by useful assessment forms and planning tools. It should be embraced by every manager and human resources professional charged with the messy but vital task of choosing the best people to making change happen.
Customer Reviews:
Good thoughts, but misses the point on what really is going on..........2006-01-24
"Making Change Happen" is good, as far as it goes. The discussion of people and their ability to fit in a changing organization and promote the change is good. If you are buying this book to guide in change planning and implementation, it provides some good groundwork information. But it is not sufficient, by itself. This author uses supervisors' assessments of "change readiness", etc.. Other books and articles provide more rigorous and objective testing of staff change readiness, etc. The author also does not deal with the morale and organizational impact of forced reassignments and "outplacement" (lay-offs or firings). He even strongly implies that the staff that remain will have higher morale during the process. Obviously, he is a consultant. He has never been close to the workforce in an organization that is in the midst of an organizational change process, or one that has had lay-offs or firings in the proceeding months or years. Nor has he read the research on how those impact morale, retention of business knowledge, and, ultimately, productivity. In that sense, this book reminds me of the Hammer and Champy "Reengineering" books of the last decade; pregnant with potential, but lacking a connection with critical components of the realities of what is happening in the corporation.
The ABCs of Personal Change Capacity.......2001-02-24
The infinite dynamics of change are not readily evident when someone or an evaluation team sets out to forge a series of modifications in an individual, a group or an organization. When charging forward to create a new course-setting direction with fervor, some change agents are driven by tradition, expedience, budget restrictions or just plain misconceptions. The very best of individual and collective good intentions may be interspersed and circumscribed by a host of expected, but not easily attainable, intended outcomes. Small and large businesses, local governments and the most spirited educators are engaged in a never ending surge of personnel change processes that seems to work no catalytic miracles for the changes they are so diligently striving to accomplish. Fortunately, there exists an exciting new way to avoid the pitfalls of recruiting, selecting and appointing an individual to a new station in the organization and then seeing that very person fall from grace because the organization just simply did not put in place the correct strategy to use this vital human resource in the proper way. Dr. Charles H. Bishop has penned a timely treatise on one of the most important topics of our day. Dr. Bishop has brought forth a way to save time and money when organizations need to enact a significant personnel change for the good of the organization. What is the seemingly invisible assay that brings about real change with positive benefits for all? The "it" we are searching for has been refined by a shortlist of brave new world human resource people in some the nation's most progressive corporations. When one of these individuals (that is, Dr. Bishop) began to envision that changing organizations meant that the smallest unit or cog in the wheels of change had to be nourished, tested, refined and mentored by a new set of assumptions, a new distillation of personnel and leadership change factors became self-evident. In a phrase, the answer is "personal change capacity". As an education professor and practicum supervisor for prospective educational administrators enrolled for a northern Virginia private university, I have been reading with great interest the research literature associated with the role, purpose and mission of leaders for some time. When I read "Making Change Happen One Person at a Time", I knew I had stumbled on a set of solid statements related to making practical and proven personnel assessments. A careful study of Dr. Bishop's book began to unravel why some aspiring principals, or any future leader for that matter, seem to catch the vision of their place in schools or in other settings while, in contrast, other equally energetic and enthusiastic neophyte leader candidates faltered, floundered and ultimately failed to reach their leadership potential. Dr. Bishop reveals that when we attempt to place "successful" individuals in supposedly key positions in an unsystematic manner in order to cause positive changes, not only do the chosen ones typically underachieve, their failure sends a very a strong signal that we have inadvertently omitted crucial considerations of that individual's unique capacity to function in a new leadership arena. What are these crucial considerations and how do we put the important factors to use so that we make keener and crisper decisions that result in moving our visions and missions forward? Literally and figuratively, it is as easy as the following the ABCs. Dr. Bishop has formulated a schema that anyone might follow to identify pivotal players in any organization-even a small or large school. The scale of potential leaders begins with the A-players and concludes with the D-players. There are those among us that thrive on challenges and posses the wherewithal to meet and overcome the woes and throes of organizational stumbling blocks. At the opposite end of the leadership spectrum are the resisters who resemble the tares in the wheat field. They appear willing to change, but use a variety of ever-so-subtle tactical means to prevent the organization from reaching its objective. No matter the size and dimensions of an organization, everyone's desire is make the right personnel decisions in an appropriately researched manner. You will find your personnel pathways lined with practical signs and directions in Dr. Bishop's refreshing new take on the change agent's new role of assessing an individual's capacity to greet and welcome the inevitable and rapid changes coming down the organizational and external pikes.

Book Description
÷Farming in Nature's Image provides, for the first time, a detailed look into the pioneering work of The Land Institute, the leading educational and research organization for sustainable agriculture.
The authors draw on case studies, hands-on experience, and research results to explain the applications of a new system of agriculture based on one unifying concept: that farms should mimic the ecosystems in which they exist. They present both theoretical and practical information, including:
- a review of the environmental degradation resulting from current farming practices
- a critical evaluation of the attempts to solve these problems
- a detailed description of the ecosystem perspective and the proposed new agricultural system
- a case study illustrating how this new system could be applied to temperate grain production using perennial seed crops and the prairie as a model
- an examination of the potential savings in energy and water use, as well as potential contributions to ecological experiments and yield analysis work from The Land Institute.
Written in clear, non-technical language, this book will be of great interest to soil and agricultural scientists, academics, policymakers, environmentalists, and other concerned with finding long-range solutions to agricultural problems.

Book Description
The Tirailleurs was a company of soldiers from Brusly Landing, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. They were mostly Acadians and fought gallantly for the Southern Cause. This book follows them through the Civil War and uses diaries, letters, and memoirs to allow the soldiers to tell their own story. From a bloodbath at Shiloh's HornetÂ's, Nest, we follow them through the terrible debacle at the Battle of Nashville.
Tirailleurs is the first definitive history of the 4th Louisiana Infantry, CSA. Over sixteen hundred men served in the 4th LA and are all listed by company in the book s appendix making it an excellent genealogical resource.
Customer Reviews:
Hooray for the 4th Lousiana!.......2007-01-20
It is about time someone published a book about this State-loyal Southern regiment. This is a very interesting book for those wishing to follow a Confederate regiment raised outside of Virginia, and fighting in the Civil War in armies other than in the Army of Virginia. Yes, many, many battles were fought outside of Virginia and the men involved on both sides fought just as hard, bled just as much and died just as hard as in the Virginia battles.
My only concern about this book is the inclusion of non-documented or foot-noted quotes and actions attributed to some of the participants. Many footnotes, when the source is reviewed relate to the over-all fact of a battle, but they don't relate to a particular described action or to what is said. While these activities or sayings certainly may have happened (they do add excitement to the scene), it would be ideal to include a source reference.
Useful, Interesting.......2006-01-15
The author has carefully researched and presented a history of the Confederate Fourth Louisiana Regiment and its Company H, comprised mostly of Acadians from West Baton Rouge Parish. He focuses primarily on Company H but does not neglect the larger context of the regiment's concurrent experiences.
Company H, a Civil War infantry unit of about 100 men, organized initially as the Tirailleurs, (pronounced TEE-ray-your), was mostly Acadians. That is a distinct social class in antebellum south Louisiana derived from French extract Canadians driven out of Nova Scotia (Acadia) around 1755. The Tirailleurs and 4th Louisiana were Southerners to the core. Young patriots who at the war's beginning were itching to sally forth and obtain glory for themselves and the cause while defending hearth and home from Yankees.
The intrinsic value of this work is in revealing the daily life of at least one Confederate infantry unit, complete with their ruminations on the war, emotional swings, victories and disappointments. I particularly liked the way author Richey eventually traces the arc of each man's life and death from the company's inception to their demise on the battlefield or beyond. None of them are left out. That alone may offer lines of research for someone tracing a particular genealogy but more than that you get to know these young men and are affected by their experiences.
Another reason to follow this particular unit is that they happened to be at some of the more famous locations familiar to Civil War buffs, such as the Hornet's Nest, Shiloh Church, the first siege of Vicksburg and the battles around Atlanta. The Tirailleurs had guard and provost duty at less illuminated places such as Mobile and Baton Rouge, from which the Civil War student can glean additional bits.
If you are familiar with south Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia, you will be interested in the level of detail that Richey provides about familiar landscapes, locations, sights and sounds. There are many gems found in the details.
Overall the book is fairly well written. Unfortunately the author tends to be tied to a clipped sentence style that is linear and chronological like reading a diary. To some degree Richey uses reflection, first person narrative and omniscience to flesh out the story but generally it's like reading a diary. I found several editorial mistakes that typically occur in self published or cottage books. A severe criticism is the hand drawn maps and hand drawn pictures of generals mentioned in the book. There are some historical photos, such as that of Sgt. Trasimond Landry, a central figure of Company H but it is as if the author ran out of funds or permission to use available photos and decided to trace the picture instead. Very crude. However, the appendices are helpful.
The alert reader may find a half dozen or so instances where the author belies his personal Confederate sympathies and if inclined might be offended at the anti-Yankee or anti-Lincoln bias that slips out. It didn't bother me and doesn't detract from the book's value because it doesn't change the veracity of the narrative. The book is interesting and a real accomplishment of research at the company and regimental level. I will especially use it to fill in the gaps around divisional movements in big battles and to get a feel for the single soldier's experience.
Sources..........2005-11-20
I've just begun reading this book, and it should prove very interesting for anyone who has some ancestry from the West Baton Rouge Parish. Although there are sources sited for much of this book, I found some information regarding my family that does not reference what sources were used. I'd like to know how to contact the author and find the sources that were used for this specific information.
Great research tool.......2005-10-27
Dr. Richey has assembled a great amount of information here that really brings the subtle nuances of the day to day operations of the 4th Louisiana to light. As a disclaimer, Dr. Richey is my father in law, but that shouldn't dissuade any serious scholar of the battles fought by the 4th or anyone looking for geneological history from the region from checking out this book. The bibliography alone is worth the price of admission.

For anyone who's had a loved one die from cancer, Dancing at the Edge of Life will hit home and hit hard. After a pesky cough drove her to the doctor's office, 30-year-old poet and writer Gale Warner was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a viciously malignant form of the disease. She immediately started to record her often extraordinary thoughts in a diary. When she passed away a little more than a year later, she had compiled 1,000 pages of her spiritual and physical illumination and desperation, from the ecstasy of living through a good day to the excruciation of a bone marrow transplant.
What makes this book remarkable is Warner's perspective through it all. Though not particularly religious, she endured her treatment with Job-like patience, fortitude, and grace, reasoning that with each setback--and with each victory--she ought to be able to unveil a life lesson, to become closer to the spirit of the earth. She also perceived her bone marrow transplant as a ritual reincarnation of sorts. While her earth-goddess philosophy may strike some readers as being too far out in left field (she writes of feeling as if she's a channel of sorts for the pollution and destruction of the land), her love of the earth and perception of her role on it is extraordinarily thought provoking.

intuitive.......2007-10-11
What a mature, positive and loving book by an author who spoke so wonderously of her life.... indeed, of what life can be if experienced so profoundly and openly. It's a beautiful book.
Gale Warner Gave Us A Gift.......2003-02-28
By letting us into her thoughts as she moved from hope to resignation, Gale Warner has allowed us to witness close-up the emotional process of dying. I've read this book over and over, trying to really grasp what it must have been like to have understood, and written "We are entering a new reality" (the time when she recognized and had to fully comprehend that she was not responding, would not recover, and that death was imminent.) Whether or not you share her profound relationship with the natural world, her assertion that she has had sufficient joy and experience in her life really does ring true. I've never read anything quite like this: it is an amazing gift.
an important book.......2000-06-24
I feel it's a privilege for me to have followed Gale Warner on her journey: What was her journey? A journey we'll all have to embark on, sooner or later (hopefully, later), since we're all going to die. Gale Warner was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 30 and lived 13 more months. In these months, she wrote in her journal about her thoughts, her insights, her struggle, her pain, and finally her acceptance and serenity: But it was never easy, never simple. Gale Warner saw cancer as the ultimate test of her faith (her particular, private sort of faith). She worked and struggled with her own mortality. In her own words-
"Limits. In order to boil water, you must put it in a pot. The pot sets a limit and so does cancer. When you learn you are not immortal, that you may only have a few years to embrace life, you start doing so. The photo of the Earth on my wall shows its beauty- and its limits. It would not be the same if those same colors and swirls were sloshed all over space".
"Dancing at the edge of life" is an important book, because in the end, everybody has to find their own answers or anyway, start asking their own questions. I would recommend this book to anyone and of course, not only to people with cancer. You don't have to get diagnosed with lymphoma to start thinking of the "big" questions, you don't have to wait to have cancer in order to learn how to live.
Another reason that makes this memoir important, is that Gale Warner must have been a very special, intelligent & sensitive person. She had worked as an environmental journalist & was also an accomplished poet. A person that fully embraced life was ultimately able to fully embrace the journey towards death.
Her story teaches us that spiritual awareness is a choice........1998-09-24
Gale Warner's story is positive proof that each of us, if we make a conscious choice, can see and feel the Spirit of God in everything and everyone, in spite of, and especially during, adversity and pain. It is the little moments, Gale's descriptions of that divine CONNECTEDNESS, consistent and enduring, that touches me the most. Her tender, poetic prose allows us to glimpse the radiant, spiritual essence that is the birthright we all share. During these troubled times, the world finds itself somewhat short of role models, but with the loving gift of "Dancing at the Edge of Life," Gale remains a lasting example. In her own words, she was and is "a daughter of the four winds, a child of the moon and rain and sun ... sister of the whale, and the juniper." I suspect that she now shines brightly in the heavens; each person who reads this book will feel the warmth of her glow, and best of all, will want to share it with others.
Make room on your shelves...this one's a keeper!.......1998-08-25
If ever a book had the potential to change lives for the better, it's this one. Gale's diary reveals a sensitive, intelligent and spiritual woman - whose genuine attraction to life reminds me of an infant's sweet, simple fascination with its newly discovered hand. I was most inspired by her courage during the final months of her conflict with cancer: it never faltered - even as she struggled to define her religious beliefs. This book leaves one with a rekindled passion for life. Tonight at dusk I'm going to seek out the sunset ...something I haven't done since I was a kid.
