Book Description
- Why is ethics important to organizations?
- What are the characteristics of an ethical organization?
- How can we audit the ethics of an organization?
- What measures and activities stimulate the ethical development of organizations?
This book addresses these questions.
It is easier to say that ethics is necessary than to tell how to organize ethics. This book provides a fundamental and coherent vision on how ethics can be organized in a focused way. This study examines the assumptions for organizing ethics, the pitfalls and phases of such a process, the parts of an ethics audit and the great variety of measures.
The methods and insights illustrated in this book are based partially on practical research. One of these methods, the Ethics Thermometer, was based on more than 150 interviews at various organizations. The Ethics Thermometer has been applied in a great variety of profit and not-for-profit organizations in order to measure an organization's perceived context, conduct and consequences.
This book will be important to scholars in the field of business ethics, as well as to managers and practitioners. For scholars, this study provides general knowledge about auditing and developing the ethics of an organization. A summary is given of the criteria by which the ethical content of an organization can be measured. For managers and practitioners, this study provides concrete suggestions for safeguarding and improving ethics within their organizations.

Mobbing: Emotional Abuse in the American Workplace, 2002 Revised Edition
ASIN: 0863779468 |
Book Description
Mobbing bullying or harassment, a severe form of social stressor at work, has become a topic of widespread public interest in several European countries. Mobbing includes minor social conflicts such as socially isolating a person, rumours, or giving somebody a bad name, but also major conflicts like giving somebody no work, or work below or above his or her qualification, threats to kick somebody out of the firm, or threats of physical violence. Although mobbing is a very old phenomenon, it has not been described and systematically investigated until the early 1980s when Heinz Leymann started the first research projects in Sweden.; This special issue brings together scientists and practitioners from various European countries who have done research and possess practical experience in this area. The book begins with an article that introduces the theoretical concept of mobbing. Several articles follow which report empirical findings on mobbing in Austria, Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. These articles deal with questions such as: How oftenn does mobbing occur? Can anybody be affected? Who are the mobbers? Are there organizational causes of mobbing? The articles emphasize the severe health consequences which can be observed in nearly every mobbing victim. One article reports two case studies and describes the medical treatment of mobbing victims. Finally, prevention and intervention measures are summarized which were already successfully used in practice.

A Doctor Looks at War: My Year in Iraq
ASIN: 0760321191 |
Book Description
The most decorated solder in World War I was not Sergeant Alvin York, as many believe, but a stretcher bearer named Charles Denver Barger. And Barger is just one of the legion of military medical personnel whose lifesaving feats are remembered in this inspiring volume. A tribute to those who tend the sick and wounded under the toughest conditions, Doc is made up of the sometimes humorous, often harrowing, and always heartfelt memoirs of quick-thinking medics and heroic nurses, of surgeons and physicians equipped with only the tools of mercy, performing acts of great courage. Here too are the stories of those whose lives were saved as the indefatigable "Doc" braved battle and the elements on Omaha Beach and in Da Nang, on Okinawa and in Korea to treat a shrapnel wound or a napalm burn orin one remarkable casegive lifesaving instructions to the wounded despite his own fatal injury. Recounted by privates and generals from World War I to Iraq, these stories all have one thing in common: they inspire with the raw truth of men and women working under the greatest stress imaginable to bring their comrades safely home.
Customer Reviews:
An inspiring and personal history.......2006-02-09
From the very start, the first person accounts of war in Mark Littleton and Chuck Wright's "DOC" bring you immediately into the experiences of life and death in the battles fought by American sons and daughters since World War I. Each account from a medic or from one of the countless souls saved by a medic on some foreign shore reminds you of the millions of soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen who have put themselves in harm's way to defend our precious way of life. From Marine Jerry Jolly's quest to find the corpsman who saved his life in Korea to Wheeler Lipes' courageous performance of an emergency appendectomy in the austere conditions of a USN submarine on patrol, these stories will stir your heart. The medics, corpsmen, and nurses measure up admirably, facing horrifying injuries and using their determination and ingenuity to save lives and comfort the injured as best they can in the chaos of combat. As an Air Force surgeon, this book demonstrated to me the fine tradition of American military wartime medical care preceding me and the large footsteps I have to fill.

Book Description
Over fifty years after the carnage at Normandy, Dr. John Kerner draws from his wartime journals and letters home to present an insightful portrait of war. Medical units under his charge pushed through western Europe, improving the treatment and transportation of the wounded during some of the most brutal fighting. Amidst the mud and blood of combat, this decorated medical officer shares a time and place when living beyond each day was in serious question. Kerner's account includes some of the greatest moments in World War II: the dramatic breakout of the Normandy hedgerow country, the thrilling dash across France in the summer of 1944, and the siege of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.
Customer Reviews:
A heartfelt memoir cleanly written.......2002-12-11
I am not a WWII buff and I normally do not read medical memoirs, perhaps because I was an ER nurse for many years. I read this book more or less for background information for a novel I am writing. But it immediately became more than research material for me. Dr. John Kerner's story is both poignant and unpretentious. As I read the book I found myself wanting to know this man and now, at the end I feel perhaps I do. As a writer I was impressed by his honesty and his natural voice. As a retired RN I was impressed by the doctor's humility. And as a woman I have to say I loved all the references to the women who were a part of his life (especially his brief affair with the Red Cross volunteer!)I recommend this book to any one of any age who enjoys candid accounts of real people who have done remarkable things.
Don Christians author of "Homer's Whip".......2002-08-01
An interesting look at WW2 from the inside by a man who unexpectedly was there. From the invasion on thru the battles, Kerner keeps your interest by relating his experiences as well as his observations. The section where he delivers the baby of a young French woman near the battle field will keep your interest right to the end. Should be on everyone's gift list.
Another Man of the Greatest Generation.......2002-06-25
Combat Medic: World War II is a fascinating memoir by John A. Kerner, M.D. His medical school training as an OB/GYN only in one instance stood him in good stead as a doctor whose ultimate assignment took him from D-Day plus 1 at Omaha Beach, through the Battle of the Bulge, finally ending with the Army of Occupation in Germany. When he signed up for the Army, he thought he'd be assigned to a stateside hospital delivering babies for Army dependents. He never even got as far back from the front as a field hospital. He was up with the troops for the whole time, and he has two Bronze Stars to show for it.
I met John and his wife, Gwen, on a tour through Northern Spain in 2000. He's a fascinating man, although older than I. At the time he was thinking of writing his memoir. For posterity's sake I'm glad he did. While he's not a Stephan Ambrose, he tells it like it was, down and dirty, being there, a true hero of the greatest generation. I really enjoyed reading his book, having known the man. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in first person accounts of what it was really like trying to save lives while cold, wet, and in the mud with a lot of unfriendly German infantrymen trying keep you from doing your job by making you keep your head (and other parts) down.

Book Description
He was a chemistry student in college on his way home for a visit when news of Pearl Harbor came over the car radio. Like 16 million others from his generation, Dean W. Andersen was called to active military duty and spent the next 38 months of his life as a medic in the Pacific war theater. This memoir shows that the human feelings of fear, loss, anger, hate, patriotism and solidarity were the same then as they have been for every war since. The experiences of the "greatest generation" can comfort and advise young people today who may well be faced with challenges as great as those met so long ago.
Based on 93 letters written home to his wife and parents during his time away at war, this book includes information that was disallowed by censors and in some cases, cut out of his correspondence. Though the history of the European theater in World War II is well documented, considerably less information is available about the war in the Pacific. The author recalls the many aspects of his experiencefrom landing on beaches in the South Pacific amid exotic birds and animals and interacting with the people of New Guinea, to evacuating wounded soldiers through steaming jungles and snake-infested swamps and over high mountains, to facing machine gun fire and watching snipers kill the last man in a column of marchers. The book includes many interesting photographs that have never been published, including images of the Japanese surrender.
Customer Reviews:
Medicine at War.......2007-07-03
This is an excellent view of wartime medicine, the incredible conditions before antibiotics and later. While the writing is not "literary" neither is it technical. This book is great for a quick read, quite interesting
Important history of WWII in the Pacific.......2003-12-01
I am interested in the history of WWII, not from the perspective of generals and politicians, but from the regular "Joes and Janes" who were called into the service of our country. In this book, the author shares his experiences as a medic in the Pacific War theater. The attention to detail, specifically about war-time medicine, was engaging and provides an important record of the sometimes primitive conditions encountered during conflict and the struggle of humans to help one another under the most adverse of conditions. Wonderful photos!

Book Description
Isadore Valenti would return home from WWII to the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. He would go back to high school, graduate from college, marry and have children, but he would always hear the cries of "Medic!" echoing over the years from the bloody North African, Italian, French and German battle fields.
Combat Medic is the story Valenti had to tell of young medics who placed their bodies between the wounded and enemy fire. Valenti's memoir takes the reader through the North African and European theaters of war on a long and harrowing journey that concludes, incredibly, with Valenti sipping Hitler's exquisite wine in the dictator's secret mountain-top hideaway in Berchtesgarden, Austria.
Combat Medic reveals the soul of an immigrant's son who went from blackened coal fields to bloody battle fields and back home again, building a life and finding solace in the telling of his story of war and remembrance. In his book, Valenti shares with the world his astonishing collection of war photographs and his even more astonishing ability to bring to life the true story of the combat medic.
Customer Reviews:
stunning storytelling.......2007-05-23
I purchased this book because my uncle wrote it. I had heard everyone in our family talking about it for years. I had heard my uncle talking about it and I talked to him about it. It has been published for several years. He is now in his 90's and I thought that as a tribute to him and to pass along to my children I should buy the book. So, I broke down and bought it. I couldn't put the book down. It is as though he were still telling me the stories of his military experiences. The photos are wonderful as they remind me of my own father's war photos. I see my uncle and I can remember his dashing good looks when we were all younger individuals. I can see the facet of him and of my own father that we were never exposed to directly. I can appreciate their bravery. I can understand their staunch patriotism. Uncle Isadore has always been a wonderful person, fascinated with the war and always wanting to share his knowledge. I am glad this book has been published and that I purchased it.
Not truly a story.......2005-10-05
This book is basically a print version of Mr Valenti's diary. There is no true narrative, instead it's a random assembly of his thoughts and writings on what he experienced. Very stop and go type reading.
If you are looking for a true narrative on what its like to be a combat medic, you'll have to look elsewhere.
I have not really read the book but Mr. Valenti is great...........1999-07-27
My granpa and Mr. Valenti are best friends and I met him for the frist time yesterday July 25,1999. He thought my grandpa was KIA and they reunited for the frist time in 55 years and i think that he is a great person and so does my granpa.

This is a book about revolutions, told by a medical man at the forefront of those battles, many still in progress, that have affected the lives of millions. Termed a "stormy petrel" of his profession by a great university, he was a major player in revolutionary changes in the treatment of the mentally ill; the medical approach to the disease of alcoholism; the unraveling of the methods used by Communist tyrants to enslave nearly a third of the earth's peoples, including some of our own; and, working within the labyrinth of power that is the Pentagon, assuring that those who serve the nation in battle, if wounded, have better than a 97% chance to survive their wounds: unprecedented in the history of war.
This is a book about revolutionary changes in our world in the century just ended, that will continue in the new one ahead. Dr. William Mayer is a citizen-physician-soldier who, often at great professional (and at times, personal) risk, plunged into battles to change centuries-old ideas and practices having to do with insanity and the disease of alcoholism; methods of military training needed to respond to mind-altering tyrannies; and competition with our top war-fighters for the huge resources to assure our soldiers the finest medical care in history. These tales of changes that affect the lives of all in the free world are essential to the understanding of what can be accomplished by a free people, and what our adversaries would destroy.
These revolutions touch the lives of all of us. They must be understood, and they must be remembered. For it is all too often that people forget these revolutions and history...thus are doomed to repeat them. Often with horrible consequences.
