A great book.......2003-10-21

This is a great book. Though I personally look at my Christian beliefs as workplace inspiration, I like hearing more holistic points of view. This book does a nice job of balancing eastern and western philosophy and religion in its view of work. It is a very positive book and realistic. This book is not pretentious like most spirituality in business books.

I enjoyed reading the book and hope these two authors write followup books on this same subject.

What a timely and inspiring book. It's a practical and profound guide on how to nurture and develop the spirit at work. I particularly benefitted from the exercises and tools for implementation.

It's not easy to distill the wisdom of great spiritual teachers and make engaging and relevant examples of how to apply that wisdom at work. I highly recommend this book - whether you work for a company or not.

A model for Servant Leadership.......2000-04-28

I am Servant Leadership Specialist in a Catholic Hospital setting in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. This health care campus is part of a 12 Hospital system. My short comments are premised upon a retreat in Vancouver with the authors for five days, their highly useful work with our staff of 600 on site a year ago, and my experience as an Ethicist and teacher of theology.

A reviewer suugested that this book's premise is yet another medal given to those who sell themselves to the institution. But this is not true: the outcome of using these thoughts and the assumptions of Servant Leadership (Robert Greenleaf Center, Indianapolis, Indiana} helps the colleagues in a really growth enhanceing environment take ownership of the relationships and policies in their own setting. If the effort is made in good faith by all, the result is a workplace that is peaceful, friendly, cooperative, and above all productive. I strongly recommend the principles developed by Klein and Izzo. They flow from their deep exprience with several of America's best and largest corporations, from their own humanity and from the most thoughtful consideration they have given to creating truly humanizing and productive workplaces.

I offer a word of caution however: if you still believe that just another set of words and ideas can give you a new result, this approach would be no more than just another 'canned program'. When you decide to recreate your workplace on honest relationships, not power, and want to create a new work system that has both power and peace, then you are ready to begin the long-term effort of rebuilding the world of work in which you live. This is a guidebook for those who have the idea of a better way to work and live. This small book is not a panacea; it is a map for a long journey. We have invested 9 years in this effort in our health care setting, and both patients and staff know and happily acknowledge that with persistence, we are growing into what is envisioned here.

A practical note: We are now at the point of attracting people who think in this manner into our most responsible administrative and service areas and we have many very long term employees. People love to work where they known, respected and part of the decision making process. We have had great and competent help from Klein and Izzo in creating a caring corporation, and in incorporating our own Christian values and Catholic traditions.

Corporate Soul's a Great Help.......2000-04-26

Having read Corporate Soul a while ago,I am really quite surprised by how much I continue to refer to it and be inspired by it in my work in higher ed administration. The four paths to corporate soul outlined in the book are thought-provoking. They provide a good way to organize one's thinking about how to bring greater meaning to one's work and that of coworkers. The book is also full of good stories from spiritual traditions, which are worth the read in their own right. Finally, the book is practical enough to convince a reader (well, me at least) that one can actually do something about this stuff and not just feel good about it.

I thought this presentation was a nice balance between providing information regarding the creation and upkeep of a country pond and the value of ponds in the lives of real people. I took a few notes as I read to guide me through the process of adding a pond to our land in the Midwest. I also enjoyed the vision the author shared of the contribution a pond can make to the physical and emotional well-being of those who live nearby.

A Love Affair with Small Waters.......2004-05-12

Those who love Gene Logsdon's work will definitely want to add this book to their library. Along with his usual contrary take on proper pond building methods, he conveys the beauty, diversity, and endless joy generated by a small pond of water. If you've not read Mr. Logsdon, then this is a wonderful introduction to his work. Anyone who has enjoyed dangling their toes off a dock, frog hunting in the cattails, or fishing on a sunny spring day will appreciate this book.

The ESA explorer core mission GOCE, to be launched in 2006, will enhance our knowledge of the global static gravity field and of the geoid by orders of magnitude. The U.S. satellite gravity mission GRACE (2002-2006) is currently measuring, in addition, the temporal variations of the gravity field. With these new data a whole range of fascinating new possibilities will be opened for solid Earth physics, oceanography, geodesy and sea-level research. The new generation of gravity missions employs sensor concepts for gravity field measurement, orbit and attitude control and orbit determination that show interesting similarities with space experiments planned in the field of fundamental physics. This volume is the result of a workshop that brought together some 50 acknowledged experts in their field to discuss (1) strategies for ultra precision orbit determination and gravity field modelling with the data of the upcoming gravity field missions, (2) the use of accurate and high resolution gravity models in Earth sciences whereby, in particular, synergy is expected between the various science fields in their use of this type of new information, and (3) gravity field requirements and possible sensor and mission concepts for the time after GRACE and GOCE.

Steve Havriliak, in his own words, describes the many and unappreciated applications of the Havriliak-Negami equation. Probably the best way to trace the etymology of this work is to start from Peter Debye's book Polar Molecules ( Dover 1943 ) and then move forward to current day chemical physics literature . In the original context, the Havriliak-Negami equation was developed for polymers. But the application can be extended to NMR, impact resistance testing, strength of materials, photography, and any application where a distribution of relaxation times is significant .

Polymers exhibit a range of physical characteristics, from rubber-like elasticity to the glassy state. These particular properties are controlled at the molecular level by the mobility of the structural constituents. One of the mathematical challenges of modern physics lies in the development of new tools to efficiently describe different branches of physics within one mathematical framework. This text introduces precisely such a broad mathematical model, one that gives a clear geometric expression of the symmetry of physical laws and is entirely determined by that symmetry.

The first three chapters discuss the occurrence of bounded symmetric domains (BSDs) or homogeneous balls and their algebraic structure in physics. It is shown that the set of all possible velocities is a BSD with respect to the projective group; the Lie algebra of this group, expressed as a triple product, defines relativistic dynamics. The particular BSD known as the spin factor is exhibited in two ways: first, as a triple representation of the Canonical Anticommutation Relations, and second, as a ball of symmetric velocities. The associated group is the conformal group, and the triple product on this domain gives a representation of the geometric product defined in Clifford algebras. It is explained why the state space of a two-state quantum mechanical system is the dual space of a spin factor. Ideas from Transmission Line Theory are used to derive the explicit form of the operator Mobius transformations. The book further provides a discussion of how to obtain a triple algebraic structure associated to an arbitrary BSD; the relation between the geometry of the domain and the algebraic structure is explored as well. The last chapter contains a classification of BSDs revealing the connection between the classical and the exceptional domains.

With its unifying approach to mathematics and physics, this work will be useful for researchers and graduate students interested in the many physical applications of bounded symmetric domains. It will also benefit a wider audience of mathematicians, physicists, and graduate students working in relativity, geometry, and Lie theory.

It was a pleasure to read Dr.Friedman's book.He uses in it some modern mathematical concepts("informally")such as bounded symmetric domains,homogeneous balls,Lie groups and algebras,etc for building physical models(special relativity theory,quantum mechanics,electromagnetic theory).
The book is not an easy reading but everything is there for its understanding and the effort is amply rewarded.It seems
that Dr.Friedman delivers on his promise that expirience with concepts such as bounded symmetric domains,homogeneous balls etc. can be beneficial in other areas of research of intrest to a reader.
I highly recommend this book.Dr.Alex Gelman

This the second book written by Chaplain Newby. Since one of my encounters is featured I can personally attest to the accuracy Claude stives to achieve. I have walked many miles through the jungle with this brave soldier/Chaplain and can assure you what he writes is the truth as he experienced it, coupled with others recollections. If you were having a bad day one thing you could be certain - Claude Newby would be there on the "first thing smokiin'" - often coming in on the Medivac chopper. He always went to the sound of the guns. A good man, a brave man, who writes books that are as real as he is. Read this one. (We appreciate his work helping telling our story of what really happened in Vietnam, helping us all remember those challenging days.)

A Vietnam Book That Will Survive 100 Years.......2001-05-04

It Took Heroes II is both a riveting day by day account of a Chaplains ministry in combat with Infantry Soldiers and a resource that will be sought after and read for decades. It is the author's second book on the Vietnam war, and recounts the experiences he and his men had on his second Vietnam tour. No book that I have seen captures the fear, violence, mayhem, and the special camaraderie of soldiers at war. Newby's book is a careful accounting of a battalion in combat, and he tells it from a chaplains viewpoint and with great oratorical skill. I bought both Heroes I and Heroes II, and read them both, barely putting them down. You will not be sorry that you bought this book, and Newby's first book too.
