Tillage has hastened the erosion of irreplaceable topsoil everywhere and a technology based on fossil fuels has increased yields for short-term profits, leaving crops ever more vulnerable to diseases, pests, and droughts. Such, says Jackson, is "the failure of success." As high-technology agriculture becomes more wasteful and expensive, more farmers are being forced off the land or into bankruptcy.

Jackson's major solution calls for the development of plant combinations that yield food while holding the soil and re-newing its nutrients without plowing or applying fossil-fuel-based fertilizers or pesticides. His new way of raising crops, by working with the soil's natural systems, would keep the world's bread-basket producing perpetually.

In his classic simple language Jackson describes the costs of our current way of doing agriculture. He focuses on soil loss with emphasizing the fact that our dependence has gone from "soil to oil" for energy and fertilizer.

This book outlines Jackson's idea for a perennial, herbaceous, polyculture agriculture that mimics the natural environment instead of our current annual, herbaceous, monoculture. Jackson also gives a broad view of decentralizing our societies and distributing people across land according to its ability to support them in the proper concentration.

The critiques of current agricultural practices is well done but simple enough for the laymen to understand. Simple computations are used to illustrate the ecological and financial costs of capital/oil intensive agriculture.

The discussion of values and religion in chapter 8, though it has a good direction, is lacking in comparison to Jackson's other topics.

Biserrula pelecinus is a pasture legume species new to Australian agriculture. The potential N benefit from B. pelecinus pastures in agricultural systems may not be realised if its symbiotic interactions with Mesorhizobium spp. are not well understood. This study evaluated the symbiotic interactions of four strains of Biserrula root-nodule bacteria (WSM1271, WSM1283, WSM1284, WSM1497) with four genotypes of B. pelecinus (cv. Casbah, 93GRC4, 93ITA33, IFBI1) and with a range of related legumes, including species known to be nodulated by strains of Mesorhizobium loti and other Mesorhizobium spp. Structures of root nodules were studied using light and electron microscopy enabling the ultrastructure of effective and ineffective nodules to be compared. B. pelecinus always formed typical indeterminate, finger-like nodules. The number of bacteroids inside symbiosomes varied between hostxstrain combinations, however, nodules formed by ineffective associations had well developed peribacteroid membranes and abundant bacteroids. Considerable variation was found in N"2-fixing effectiveness of strains isolated from B. pelecinus on the four B. pelecinus genotypes. Strains WSM1271, WSM1284 and WSM1497 nodulated Astragalus membranaceus, only strains WSM1284 and WSM1497 nodulated Astragalus adsurgens. Strain WSM1284 also nodulated Dorycnium rectum, Dorycnium hirsutum, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Leucaena leucocephala, Lotus edulis, Lotus glaber, Lotus maroccanus, Lotus ornithopodioides, Lotus pedunculatus, Lotus peregrinus, Lotus subbiflorus and Ornithopus sativus. The four strains from B. pelecinus did not nodulate Amorpha fruticosa, Astragalus sinicus, Cicer arietinum, Hedysarum spinosissimum, Lotus parviflorus, Macroptilium atropurpureum or Trifolium lupinaster. M. loti strain SU343 nodulated all four genotypes of B. pelecinus. However, M. loti strain CC829 only nodulated B. pelecinus genotypes 93ITA33 and IFBI1 and the nodules were ineffective. The root nodule isolates from H. spinosissimum (E13 and H4) nodulated B. pelecinus cv. Casbah whereas the commercial inoculant strain for Cicer (CC1192) could not nodulate any genotype of B. pelecinus. These results indicate that strains WSM1271, WSM1283 and WSM1497 isolated originally from B. pelecinus have a specific host range while strain WSM1284 is promiscuous in its capacity to nodulate with a broad range of related species. As B. pelecinus can be nodulated by Mesorhizobium spp. from other agricultural legumes, particularly Lotus, there is an opportunity to utilise this trait in cultivar development.

Wonderful account of history!.......2001-06-21

I had the chance to read this book and then meet the author in person! He is just as intriguing in person as his book is. He gives an account of the history of WWII that you don't receive from any other book and his descriptions of how things really were from a soldiers point of view are outstanding. He has a way of putting you right in his place as if you were there. Best of all, his writing is easy to understand without a lot of technical terms that the average person doesn't understand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

WHEN MY GRANDFATHER (A WWII VETERAN) ASKED ME TO READ THIS BOOK "HEY MAC: A COMBAT INFANTRYMAN'S STORY" FOR HIS SAKE, WELL, LET'S JUST SAY I WAS LESS THAN THRILLED ABOUT IT. "YECH, HISTORY", WAS ALL I THOUGHT. THOUGH WHEN I ACTUALLY STARTED READING IT, I WAS HOOKED ON IT RIGHT AWAY. AUTHOR W.F. MCMURDIE DOES AN ABSOLUTELY SPLENDID JOB OF DESCRIBING EVERYTHING HE SAW ABOUT THE WAR JUST AS IT WAS; HE DOESN'T SUGAR-COAT IT. This book is, by far, the best, most realistic book about how war really was. Set in WWII, this true story paints a very vivid and detailed description of William McMurdie's life as a young soldier, serving in a horrendous war far from home and family. You will hear his harrowing first-hand accounts of death and violence, as well as what life was like on a daily basis during his service in the Battle of the Bulge, advance to the Rhine, the Remagen Bridgehead, and more. This book is, without a doubt, a wonderful, truthful, awe-inspiring tale that I absolutely loved to read. I hope you enjoy it just as much as I.

I have read this book and enjoyed it so much... I was actually one of Doctor Jones' patients in Granite Falls. Doctor Jones captures the 'small town essence' of not only our small town, but, I think most small towns in America during that era. I have read the book a few times, and each time, I enjoy it more. Whether one grew up in a small "Andy Griffith" type town or New York City, I believe this book paints an interesting and delightful picture of the innocence of an era gone by.

Doc Jones is a wonderfully written account of colorful people and an insightful peak into human nature. I couldn't put it down. Loved it!
