A history was kept........2007-09-15

As a chinese knowing 70's chinese farmer life, I found that the daily details the author picked to present are very real and worth to keep. Sometimes, I even doubt that the author is a local taiwaness. Though you may not believe many details if your experinces about China/Taiwan are only from recent days, you can not deny something recorded in 60's. I personally think this is a very valuable book to keep the ordinary life of Chinese/taiwaness life befor the globelization or before the invade of Westen cultures.
As an anthropology rather than a history book, the strength is details, and the attempt that the authors eadeavors to keep the details( without the prejudice). Are not those details truly the history? So, I guess that the value of this book will be truly found when Chinese/taiwaness find the book totally foreign. Let us witness.

Quick and enjoyable read........2002-08-03

I read this book for an anthropology class. I find it very enjoyable as a novel (very lively dialogues and interesting characters, some of whom you will like and identify with), but I question its credibility as an ethnography. Half of the people in my class believed that the author is biased, and that her views towards the women are especially harsh. As someone who is familiar with Taiwan (the book is not about mainland China), I find some descriptions/observations from the book very foreign. Just don't make too much out of the book.

This book is about the farm family. Aside from the family relationship that are not terribuly different from what you have seen in other works and think of every day living in the traditional family. One of WOlf's strengths in this book is her interaction with the lim family. This book is good to know the chinese large family which was village life for those with a general interest in china. It was interesting to know the other country's family society.

History of East Asia Review.......1999-11-05

Being a student at Johns Hopkins University, and majoring in East Asian Studies, I found this book to be very educating and interesting. The stories are fast paced, and the reader needs no prior understanding of Chinese society and tradition. This is a story of a Chinese farm family entangled in conflict, and the methods in which the father, Lim Han-Ci, and later, the second son, Lim Chieng-cua, operate to maintain the traditions and honor of the family. One of Wolf's strengths in this book is her interaction with the Lim family, and her reactions to different events. She understands the culture and traditions of a farm family in 1930's Taiwan, yet is able to put a Western perspective on all of it. Ms. Wolf is able to show that the most important thing to a Chinese man is tradition, face, filial piety, honor, and respect. In sum, Wolf's understanding of the integral relationships between parents, foster parents, children, adopted children, wives, second wives, and even the locals, enables us to gain a full perspective of why certain family issues were relevant, and how they were properly adhered to. This work is a brilliant contribution to our understanding of the Chinese family hiearchy, and why discrimination, sex biasness, and family honor was so important to so many different generations in Chinese society.

The relatively recent increase in computational power available for mathematical modeling and simulation raises the possibility that modern numerical methods can play a significant role in the analysis of complex particulate flows. This introductory monograph focuses on basic models and physically based computational solution strategies for the direct and rapid simulation of flowing particulate media. A great book about how boys became men in WWII.......2000-09-14

I read this book to learn what life was like for sailors during WWII. It's from an officer's perspective, but it did give me the "feel" for what the daily grind of being a sailor was like. I liked the author's style; it was straightforward and honest. The only negative I can think of was Harlan never revealed what happened to his Skipper (Cotton Clark) after the war, whom he must have thought a lot of since he wrote so respectfully of him. It would be a great book for any WWII buff to read, especially since it covers the Normandy Invasion in vivid detail.

World War Two memoirs are not exactly scarce, but the recollections of a Pulitzer Prize winning historian are bound to excite the interest of even the most jaded military history reader.
Alas, the anticipation surpasses the event. The writing is certainly competent, and occasionally moving, but Ensign Harlan emerges as a conventional young man serving on an unremarkable vessel, with little to distinguish his experiences from thousands of others'. To add irony, several unworthy errors got by the checkers. (The 179th Infantry, for example, is misassigned to the 1st Division).
Harlan's account is engaging, and is a useful view of life on an LCI, but, as the author advises in the Preface: "...the reader should remain on guard against my possible lapses".

Not a "how to" book.......2003-06-20

I was swept off my feet by this book. It is a love story between a man and his wife, Roberta, who was fighting the battle with Alzheimer's, and between both of them and God. The author's faith grew even as the strain of taking care of his wife increased. His training as a psychologist enabled him to reveal his feelings in many difficult circumstances and to empathize with the horrors that his wife was going through. At times I cried and at other times I laughed. This is not a how-to book. Rather, it is a book written from the inner experience of the caregiver as he accompanied his wife day by day from the earliest days of her journey into this horrific disease, until the day he placed her in the keeping of professional caregivers.

A new perspective on caring for an alzheimer's patient.......2003-02-09

Many of my friends have watched their parents disappear into the strange world of Alzheimer's disease, and I read this book to try to understand a little more what they are going through. It is wonderful! The author is a trained psychologist, but he writes with tender romanticism about his beautiful, brilliant wife. Although we meet her as she is teetering over the edge into the darkness of dementia, he brings her vividly back to life by telling us about her as a young woman, a mother,a musician, college professor, community activist and good friend, so that we mourn with him as he watches the woman he knew disappear. He offers a lot of insight into how to understand the Alzheimer's patient and what kind of help the caregiver needs in order to make the right decisions. This book is not a downer, but ultimately a moving message about how great faithfulness makes life's sorrows bearable.
