5 out of 5 stars A "must-read" reference for financing your business........1999-07-20

Do you have an idea ready for the marketplace? Are you eager to be a successful entrepreneur? If so, you will need money to turn your dreams into a reality. Luckily, the answers are close at hand. Robert Brown, Ph.D., an attorney, MBA and law instructor who, for over 25 years, has specialized in guiding developing companies to success, authored "2000 Financing Business Start-Ups: How to Raise Money for Emerging Companies." He and his co-author, Alan Gutterman, Ph.D., have written a highly readable and immediately useful book, offering clear and concise descriptions of all aspects of the fundraising process.

Drs. Brown and Gutterman describe the many funding sources available including: your own funds, family, friends, banks, equipment lessors, government agencies, angels, venture capitalists and, ultimately, the public markets. This book walks you carefully and comprehensively through the process of how to access each of these options.

Of immense value are appendices which include a sample business plan, term sheet, due diligence request and other important documents, forms and checklists along with extensive lists of both venture capital funding sources and bank funding sources. A CD-ROM containing all appendices is packaged with the book, allowing readers to easily personalize these forms and documents.

"2000 Financing Business Start-Ups" helps you avoid the pitfalls that many companies make in their early days which end up limiting their going public in the future. Throughout the text are compelling vignettes by CEOs, CFOs, venture capitalists and others who share their experiences about financing start-ups. In addition to the expert guidance from the authors, these stories amplify the main points of the chapters and add an authentic and personable quality to the content.

Thankfully, and as happens on only rare occasions with business and finance books, the writing is wonderfully clear and easy-to-follow. Drs. Brown and Gutterman use down-to-earth language and address this complex topic with ease and comfort. This book is a "must-read" and will serve as an important and often-used reference for years to come.

2 out of 5 stars too basic.......2001-05-21

I feel that if you have never performed a face to face interview with subordinates that this may be helpful. It would be good for the fast food industry for someone who just went from head cashier to day supervisor. Karen had many good ideas but including what to say, what the subordinate might say was a little too simplistic. I would like to have her use her expertise in a more professional book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-04-24

If you were designing the curriculum for a class called Introduction to Performance Evaluation, this book would be your text. If, on the other hand, you're in the market for some original ideas and groundbreaking employee-evaluation strategies, this may not be the book for you. Karen McKirchy uses simple language in her guided tour of performance-appraisal basics. If you're an experienced supervisor, you may find the whole thing just a tad too simplistic. But for less seasoned managers, this book is a treasure trove of tips that will make evaluating the performance of your direct reports much more productive, easier and less painfull. We [...] recommend this book to supervisors wishing to improve their ability to motivate and evaluate employees through performance appraisals, particularly supervisors with less than five years experience.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Performance Appraisals.......2000-06-19

Excellent samples of how to use phrases correctly when laying out work expectations and performance improvement. Some very helpful checklist have been included for the reader as well as simple action plan formats. Most important is the book is written in a user friendly manner and does not get bogged down in excess verbage.

Book Description

Performance appraisal is one of the most important, continuous responsibilities of a supervisor. This book takes you through the process of conducting a performance appraisal, where you determine the quality of an employee's performance compared to set objectives, clarify present expectations, and learn the importance of providing employees with positive feedback. The authors break the process down into several steps starting with the planning, the preparation, and the writing of the performance appraisal form. The next step is to discuss the performance evaluation. You will learn how the supervisor should start the meeting, what needs to be included, how to close the meeting, and the follow-up responsibilities. It also covers some of the legal issues that can surround every performance evaluation. Tips on how the supervisor can protect his or her interests as well as the company's are also provided.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars How to design a good performance review system.......2007-05-17

The book begins with a foreword titled: "It's not supposed to be this way." The authors outline the problems and issues that many people have with performance appraisals. Then they make two key points. Here's the first one.

"Rather than a painful yearly event, performance appraisals can be viewed as a discussion, a culmination of small meetings held throughout the evaluation period."

In other words, performance review grows out of supervision. The rest of the book assumes that those "discussions" are going on. They're necessary to the process, but they're not the subject of the book.

The authors also make the point that: "In one form or other, performance reviews will continue to be a fact of our work life. This book is designed to cut through the anxiety and make the process, or series of discussions, more pleasant and productive."

Even though there are some people calling for the abolition of performance reviews as we know them, that's not likely to happen on a large scale any time soon. If the place that you work has a formal performance appraisal process now, you can count on having to deal with it for years to come.

I assume that if you're considering purchasing this book you will either be looking for ways to make your company's performance review system better or you will be looking for ways to make the process of actually doing performance reviews with your subordinates less daunting. For that reason, I'll split my analysis and recommendations into two parts.

Designing the Performance Review System

If you are responsible for designing or re-designing the performance review system in your organization, this is a book you should read. The research that's referred to matches up well with research I've done and read. The authors do a good job of presenting it and drawing conclusions.

They're also thorough. There's discussion of the current state of performance reviews, supervisor-employee relationships, scorecards, compensation, and much more.

Working Managers

If you are a working manager who has to do appraisals within your organization's system you will find some helpful material here, too. There's good discussion of how appraisals go off track. The authors cover different kinds of rating errors. And, there's material on actually conducting the appraisal.

But this part of the book is not as strong as the part about designing formal appraisal systems. There's not much depth or reach to the material on face-to-face discussion of behavior and performance issues.

That's because those are peripheral issues for the authors in this book. If you want more on face to face discussion, read my book, Performance Talk: the one-on-one part of leadership, which deals specifically with that aspect of supervision.

That's a quibble, though. Stress-Free Performance Appraisals is a solid, well-researched and well-written book that can help you improve the performance review process in your company.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for HR practioners!.......2006-03-03

This is a great resource for HR consultants and practioners who are creating innovative performance management systems for their organizations. It addresses the underlying issues that prevent organizations from successfully managing performance and delivering candid and constructive feedback. I highly recommend it to all of my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-05-02

Everyone, it seems, hates performance appraisals. Some corporate cultures compel managers to "grade on the curve," which means that even good employees may have to fail. Even in less draconian corporate cultures, performance appraisals require supervisors to tell people about their shortcomings, an uncomfortable exercise for both the appraiser and the appraised. Meanwhile, lurking in the not-too-distant background is the threat of litigation instigated by an employee whose appraiser lets slip an awkward reference to race, sex, age or some other legally proscribed subject. This book tells you how to avoid the stress and anxiety of appraisals by focusing on a few basics. Authors Sharon Armstrong and Madelyn Appelbaum provide valuable counsel - albeit not terribly well organized - for people on both sides of the desk, both the supervisor and the employee. We recommend the authors' useful potpourri of advice, role playing exercises, case histories, evaluation forms and observations about appraisals to everyone who participates in a performance appraisal system and certainly to anybody who runs one.

5 out of 5 stars Top Flight Advice From A Known Expert.......2003-10-30

Sharon Armstrong is a known expert in the field of performance appraisals and human resources training and her latest book does a fantastic job of covering a critical issue for any manager. This is a must read for any manager or would-be manager - its well-written, easily readable, and has the capacity to improve any workplace. Strong reccommend!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Perspective to a Tired, Worn Topic.......2003-10-20

As an experienced human resources professional, I have dreamed of the day when I could create a succesful performance appraisal program. And I had concluded that there was absolutely no way to please everyone. Cheer up -- Stress-free Performance Appraisals offers a fresh perspective to this tired, worn topic.

The text is, surprisingly, useful for human resources professionals, managers, and employees. It is visually attractive and chocked full of valuable questions, extensive documentation, great examples from well-regarded organizations, and ideas to cover a variety of cultures and performance appraisal philosophies. As examples of their recommendations, the authors weave -- chapter-by-chapter -- the scenarios of three fictional employees with varying performance levels. The book is an easy read in about three hours.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-02-17

This book describes the application and growth, in U.S. corporations, of multi-source employee assessment. This is a review of the strengths and weaknesses of the ¡°360¢ª Feedback¡± program created by the authors, Mark R. Edwards and Ann J. Ewen. Their book gives you enough information to evaluate multi-source employee assessments. However, if you are reading it because you expect to be able to implement a 360¢ª feedback process without hiring the authors, you will be disappointed. It seems to be written from the consultant's perspective, which is selling consulting services. This limitation should not discourage you from reading this book, if you have a genuine interest in implementing multi-source employee assessment or if it is something your company may need. While the book is not for the causal reader, it is important for anyone in a Fortune 1000 company who functions as a change agent. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to any manager who might be interested in implementing such an employee review process.

    Product Description

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A618093. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: 360-degree feedback is a powerful multi-dimensional leadership development tool that draws upon the knowledge of people within a person's own circle of influence: supervisors, peers, and direct reports. It is most widely used for development, yet many organizations also use it for administrative purposes. This thesis examines the efficacy of 360- degree feedback through an in-depth research review that establishes when 360-degree feedback is effective and what conditions enhance or detract from its effectiveness. The thesis explains how 360-degree feedback was developed and examines its rapid growth in popularity. The argument for multi-dimensional performance feedback is then discussed in errs of four factors that have changed the role of leadership as we have moved from the Industrial Age/Cold War to globalization and the Information Age. As leadership's roles change, so must the goals of leadership development. A review of successful organizations reveals that many are using 360-degree feedback for modem leadership development, reinforced by similar systems for administrative performance appraisal. Research on 360-degree feedback reveals effectiveness conditions, design and implementation considerations, and four categories of potential benefits. Large Group Interventions with Appreciative Inquiry for collaborative design/implementation and positive change management also are discussed. The thesis ends with strong recommendations for the use of 360-degree feedback for both Navy leadership development and administrative appraisal.

              Book Description

The study of surfaces has experienced dramatic growth over the past decade. Now, the editors of the internationally celebrated series Advances in Chemical Physics have brought together in this self-contained, special topic volume contributions from leading researchers in the field treating some of the most crucial aspects of the experimental and theoretical study of surfaces. This work delves into such core issues as:
              * Kinetics and dynamics of hydrogen adsorption on silicon surfaces.
              * Potential energy surfaces of transition- metal-catalyzed chemical reactions.
              * High-resolution helium atom scattering as a proof of surface vibrations.
              * Ordering and phase transitions in adsorbed monolayers of diatomic molecules.
              * The influence of dimensionality on static and dynamic properties of a system.
              * New applications to fields as varied as catalysts and the passage of molecules through membranes.

This valuable resource provides important insights into the current state of knowledge about surface properties. Prigogine and Rice's latest work will stimulate the imagination and motivate the exploration of other aspects of this fascinating subject.

                  Book Description

This well-known booklet, now in its third, expanded edition, provides an informal survey of applications of singularity theory in a wide range of areas. Although the first few chapters touch briefly (and critically) on theThom-Zeeman catastrophe theory, most of the book is concerned with more recent and less controversial aspects, covering such topics as: bifurcations and stability loss, wavefront propagation, the distribution of matter in the universe, optimization and control problems, visible contours, bypassing an obstacle, symplectic and contact geometry, complex singularities, and the surprising connections between singularities and widely disparate mathematical objects such as regular polyhedra and reflection groups. Readers familiar with the previous editions will find much that is new. Results have been brought up to date, and among the new or expanded topics discussed are delayed loss of stability, cascades of period doublings and triplings, shock waves, implicit differential equationsand folded singularities, interior scattering, and more. Three new sections give an overview of the history of singularity theory and its applications from Leonardo da Vinci to modern times, a discussion of perestroika in terms of the theory of metamorphoses, and a list of 93 problems touching on most of the subject matter in the book. The text is enhanced by fifteen new drawings (there are now 87 in all) and improvements to old ones. The already extensive literature list has been updated and expanded. As a result, the book has been enlarged by almost a third. Arnol'd's goal with this edition remains the same: to explain the essence of the results and applications to readers having a minimal mathematical background. All that he asks, is that the reader have an inquiring mind.

                  4 out of 5 stars Singularity theory.......2006-01-30

Catastrophe theory is introduced as a sort of merger of Whitney's theory of singularities of mappings and Poincaré's qualitative theory of dynamical systems. First Whitney. A surface is projected onto a plane. Somewhere the surface is folded, so that the inverse of the projection is multi-valued. Now, the plane may represent the possible values of the control parameters of a dynamic system, and the surface the possible states of the system. Moving continuously in the plane across the boundary between a single-valued and a multi-valued region may cause a jump on the surface to one of the other sheets--i.e. a small external change causes the system's state to change drastically: a "catastrophe". Poincaré's bifurcation theory of dynamical systems may now be perceived similarly on a metalevel where the systems themselves are points in a space--again an infinitesimal move in the system space may cause drastic changes of the system's equilibria. This type of geometric thinking may then be used in applications--but only sober ones, mind you: elasticity, optics, etc. Back in the old days Thom quite successfully pushed his catastrophe theory on gullible non-mathematicians. Arnol'd states his own view on those matters clearly and repeatedly throughout the book. From the preface: "Neither in 1965 nor later was I ever able to understand a word of Thom's own talks on catastrophes. He once described them to me as 'bla, bla, bla'". Arnol'd instead prefers the mathematical meat and potatoes of catastrophe theory: the theory of singularities. If only one were as enthusiastic as Arnol'd about singularity classification theorems then this would be very interesting indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction for life and behavioral scientists........1998-12-12

Catastrophe theory was the first mathematical "advance" to receive extensive coverage in the popular press since quantum mechanics. The interest and adulation afforded to chaos theory and nonlinear dynamical systems research barely immitated the enthusiasm and later scorn generated by Thom and his followers. In retrospect it is hard to see what all the excitement was about. Perhaps that's exactly why this book deserves serious attention.

While the doctoral trained mathematician may find more faults here than the rest of us, this book provides sufficient complexity for the professional, and at times is "gentle" enough for the nonmathematician. It will probably find its most useful audience among people with "semi-mathematical" trainings, scientists in life and behavioral or social sciences. For these people, who may just want to find out why Thom's initial theorems generated so much excitement and controversey, this book will be a readable delight.

This book should be mandatory reading for anyone claiming an interest in chaos theory but who does not understand how some of the overzealousness of a new paradigm can have devestating consequences. Needless to say, those unfamiliar with contemporary mathematical advances and behavioral/life/physical applications in European literarature will find this book invaluable.

                    Book Description

Based on a lecture course at the Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), this text gives a rigorous introduction to many of the key ideas in nonlinear analysis, dynamical systems and bifurcation theory including catastrophe theory. Wherever appropriate it emphasizes a geometrical or coordinate-free approach which allows a clear focus on the essential mathematical structures. Taking a unified view, it brings out features common to different branches of the subject while giving ample references for more advanced or technical developments.

                      Book Description

Bifurcation theory and catastrophe theory are two well-known areas within the field of dynamical systems. Both are studies of smooth systems, focusing on properties that seem to be manifestly non-smooth. Bifurcation theory is concerned with the sudden changes that occur in a system when one or more parameters are varied. Examples of such are familiar to students of differential equations, from phase portraits. Understanding the bifurcations of the differential equations that describe real physical systems provides important information about the behavior of the systems. Catastrophe theory became quite famous during the 1970's, mostly because of the sensation caused by the usually less than rigorous applications of its principal ideas to "hot topics", such as the characterization of personalities and the difference between a "genius" and a "maniac". Catastrophe theory is accurately described as singularity theory and its (genuine) applications. The authors of this book, previously published as Volume 5 of the Encyclopaedia, have given a masterly exposition of these two theories, with penetrating insight.

                                Book Description

Written from an original, engineering point of view, this volume presents a general nonlinear theory concerning the stability, instability, bifurcation, and oscillatory behavior of autonomous systems. Huseyin stresses analytical procedures which lead to construction of asymptotic solutions.
He analyzes various bifurcation phenomena and the associated imperfection-sensitivities via the multiple-parameter perturbation technique, a method which generates distinct forms of equilibrium surfaces linked to "elementary catastrophes." In addition, he introduces an intrinsic harmonic balancing
technique to analyze the dynamic bifurcations, resulting in a unified treatment of both static and dynamic bifurcation phenomena within an autonomous framework. Throughout the work, the presentation is conceptually simple and practical.

This important book introduces perturbation and qualitative methods for differential equations in terms understandable to students with only a basic knowledge of calculus and ordinary linear differential equations. Theorems are stated clearly with their limitations and restrictions and are applied to solve examples from various disciplines. The writing style is informal and new ideas are introduced gradually via concepts already familiar to the reader.

                                      Book Description

In the early 1940s, thousands of young American men, some still in their teens and many without ever having been in an airplane, worked through brief training courses and found themselves within a year or less to be combat veterans. Such a young man was Pennsylvanian Harry Fritz, who was trained as the tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber. Flying with the 15th Air Force from Italy, Fritz's plane was shot down during a raid over the mammoth ring of oil refineries that encircled the city of Ploesti in Romania. When Romania abandoned Nazi Germany and joined the Allied cause, 1,100 Allied prisoners were left stranded. A daring rescue mission by dozens of B-17 Flying Fortresses brought all of them to safety in one of the war's most amazing operations.

I literally can't tell you how much this book meant to me. Everybody at the nursing home where I volunteer looked different today, as I recalled people in the book, their experiences and knowledge, and realized that the people walking down the hall across from all had their own stories. Even I looked different to myself as I realized I was behaving differently and looking deeper. And that's exactly what the author set out to do, isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars Nursing vs. Doctoring.......2002-11-08

I have just completed Veneta Masson's journal Ninth Street Notebook and am still reeling from the accuracy she describes the art of nursing. As a diploma graduate of the 60's and a master's prepared family and women's health nurse practitioner my career has offered many roles to intereact with the medical profession. Veneta describes very well our role as healers in the context of community and science. I highly recommend this book to the nursing community.
