As a practitioner of sustainable agriculture and organic farming (I am a farmer, teacher and researcher) I found this story of how Cuba used organic farming to beat all odds and overcome a food crisis to be awe inspiring. Every professor, teacher, researcher, analyst, student, thinking farmer and advocate of sustainable agriculture MUST read this book. It will restore your hope. So should everyone interested in Cuba, Latin America, and Third World development. I loved to read it in the cuban's own, well-translated words.

Cuba has done an amazing job of switching over to organic, local food production. They did so to survive the assinine embargo of thier island, but in doing so they have shown the way for all of us to move to a sane mode of food production. You would want this book to be a delightful description of that process. You would be wrong. It is a leaden, tedious exercise in socialist writing with all the wit and charm of a phone book. Skip the book and just go to Cuba and see the results for yourself. Then come home and plant a garden.

The interaction between the fungus Leptosphaeria maculans and oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is becoming an excellent model system for studying genetics of host-pathogen interactions. Leptosphaeria maculans causes phoma stem canker (blackleg) on oilseed rape and other Brassica crops worldwide. Recently, application of molecular techniques has led to increased understanding of the genetics of this hemibiotrophic interaction. The complete sequences of the genomes of L. maculans and B. rapa (comprising the Brassica A genome) will be available soon. This will provide new opportunities to investigate basic metabolic pathways in the host and the pathogen, and detailed knowledge of the disease process. Worldwide, the major strategy for control of phoma stem canker is the use of cultivars with resistance to L. maculans. However, serious epidemics have occurred recently in Australia and Europe when L. maculans populations changed such that major gene resistance in oilseed rape was overcome. Thus there is an urgent need to find and deploy sources of resistance to L. maculans in a manner that enhances their durability. This book provides researchers with a synthesis of the recent studies relating to strategies for management of resistance genes to provide effective control of L. maculans, and will stimulate further research on this important model system.

A good basic account of an infantry leader in Europe during 1944. Details are interesting, although there is virtually no overall framework or background to Wilson's story. What is striking, however, is how heavy the casualties were and how Wilson was forced to work with green officers and men over and over as he was called upon to execute repeated missions. Worth the read, and its quick.

Belonging to the short list of must own WWII books.......2007-06-23

Just as Eugene Sledges, "With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa", is the standard bearer for books written about the Marine island hopping campaign, "If You Survive" by George Wilson will be considered to be among the very best autobiographical accounts of being an Army infantry officer during the post D-Day European campaign in WWII. Wilson's account is poignant, rings true, and offers a rare perspective of a young lieutenant leading men into combat in the race to Germany in 1944. It should be standard reading for all NCOs and young officers regardless of their military occupational specialty. You'll find it hard to put down as Wilson's narration leads the reader from one harrowing combat battle to the next. All this was happening while the platoons and the companies commanded by the author were steadily reduced through the attrition of casualties and combat fatigue. A fascinating story.

I have read many, many books in my life. I have read dozens of books on WWII. This book is at the top of my list for reading. I've read it three times in the short time I've owned it. It is compelling in it's frankness. Rarely does an author bring you into the war with his narrative, as George Wilson does. The story allows one to forget his troubles, and be swept into the past. The men who fought in WWII have been called our Greatest Generation. George Wilson's book, 'If You Survive: From Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge to the End of World War II, One American Officer's Riveting True Story' helps you understand why.
An excellent book, and excellent read. Buy it and enjoy!

Interesting way to learn about WWII and being a soldier .......2007-03-09

My Dad (who was a tail gunner in a plane during the Battle of the Bulge) recommended this book to my son in middle school. My son, and in turn, many kids in his social studies class and his teacher also gave the book rave reviews. It is an easy read from a soldier's perspective that takes you through the big European ground battles of WWII. A much more interesting way to learn history and make it "come alive". My son and many of his friends have gone to other WWII books because of their interest in WWII and I think this book contributed greatly to that interest. George- thanks !

This is a very concise book and one that both I and my kids can read and understand. It doesn't go into a lot of long-term survival detail like some of the books do. I wasn't interested in trapping animals or how to dam a creek. I just wanted some good solid information for short-term emergency situations - how best to prepare for them and how to best avoid them in the first place.

This book has every possible information you can think of on not to become a victom of a rape, abuse, and much more. I recommend this book tp all of the female readers out there who wouldn't mind a little advise from an expert who knows how to deal with tough and unpredicted events. I bought one for my wife, and I have to admit, I started reading when she was not around.
I just hope she doesn't read this review.

Sarah had a very abusive and chaotic childhood. She grew up thinking she was not worth much and was sexually abused quite often by various males throughout her childhood.
This was a tremendously difficult story to read through as it goes into detail about various abusive incidents. Sarah is the main character and after awhile, I pondered whether there would ever be hope found in this story.

She and her siblings spent the majority of their life moving from one location to the next, and never had the opportunity to settle in and experience stability. Her mother was also abusive towards her and at one point abandoned the children.

Sarah married at a very young age, and found herself in a horribly abusive marriage. Sarah went from one relationship to another, even while married. She moved from one home to another, uprooting her children each time in an attempt to gain some sort of stability and normalcy. However, the effects of the abuse were far reaching on both Sarah and her children; the effects of the cycle of abuse in this family were even felt on Sarah's grandchildren.

This story speaks candidly about the truth of the effects on a victim of domestic violence. Each person in this family learned to cope and survive the abuse in their own way. Often times, sex, drugs, and alcohol were used as coping mechanisms. In the end, Sarah's body could no longer cope and threatened to shut down completely, causing her to consider her own needs above the needs of others, for the first time in her life.

Ann Whitman's book, If I Can Survive My Life...You Can Survive Yours, underscores the necessity of domestic violence agencies and programs in every community. If one person consumed in this cycle cannot find their way out of the abuse and break the cycle, it will continue for future generations.

Though this book is no easy read, I recommend that anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in the field of domestic violence read it. This is largely because the reader is taken on a very real and truthful journey, and witnesses first hand through Ann Whitman's writings, what domestic violence is truly about. No reader, having finished this book, will be able to put it down, ignore its contents, and still maintain a clear conscience.

This book drives the reader to a level of contemplating how they might be able to help those who suffer abuse each day in our society. It brings the reader to a level of understanding that one would not think possible. I highly recommend this book be read by those pursuing social work on any level.

If I Can Survive My Life...you can survive yours, by Ann Whitman, is an atrocious story of continual abuse, neglect, and malevolency. The main character Sarah, has suffered through her entire life with sexual and emotional abuse of every kind. In every corner of her life there is a barrier of wickedness that attempts to break her spirit. There are not enough words to describe the heart wrenching circumstances that as a child she endures, as a teen she encounters, and as an adult she mourns.

One can only speculate as to how this woman is able to make it through another day with the ability to trust anyone. Ann Whitman captures the thoughts of Sarah superbly with the ending. It leaves the mind much to ponder at the society and how it has evolved.

Sarah learns that there is hope at the end of the tunnel, but in her life it comes at a great cost. Her belief in God kept her going; her faith kept her strong. Her poignant tale ends on a tear jerking note as Sarah fingers the cover of an old worn photo album, which reads, This Is Your Life. No longer will she add photos of her own children for they were lost to a system that was meant to protect, yet she find herself yet victimized again for having married a man full of darkness abusing her own son.

Hitting the Wall by Barbara Pate Glacel was the first of the many breast cancer books that I have read as a caregiver that made me both laugh out loud and cry. Sharing notes and letters to and from friends and family during her struggle with breast cancer treatment, Barbara Glacel exposes her ordeal with honesty and compassion. But beyond being able to indentify with the emotional aspects of her struggle, I came away from reading this book with many good tips, ideas and resources to share with my own mother during her fight against breast cancer.

I found the book to be very detailed about little things that some books might not think important. As a breast cancer patient, I found helpful advice to give me advance warning about many things that might have been troubling. Barbara skillfully captures the essence of a breast cancer survivor's journey. Even though each of our stories is unique, she takes us through the various phases of her illness in a way that we can identify with, while at the same time marvel at her courage and strength. Her ability to navigate the health care system of a foreign country, with all it's complexities, while at the same time build her own international network of support is remarkable. Barbara's nobel efforts to become an advoate for other military families struggling with cancer are worthy of our admiration. Her honest self revelations are balanced with grateful praise for her family, friends and medical team. She gives readers an inside view of living with a disease that all women dread, in such a way that we gain hope from her persistent pursuit of wellness and normalcy. I finished Barbara's book on my own 5th year anniversary of "hitting the wall" - an appropriate way to celebrate! Dr. Barbara Pate Glacel has provided with her personal book a wonderful tool for the reader to use in their understanding of cancer. Her writings are so clear and emotional that one finds him or herself caught up in her intense struggle to first come to terms with her disease, and then, also her treatment. How I wish I had this book years ago when my father was dying of cancer. It would have enabled me to have helped him in his own fight, providing comfort and knowlege and yes, humor too. I totally recommend this book to anyone who has cancer or who has a loved one who is "Hitting the Wall".
