Book Description
Approximately two years ago, the Guido Carli Association charged a group of distinguished economists with studying various aspects of the international monetary system and proposing ways to improve it. The studies were presented at a conference in Florence, Italy, on June 19, 1998 and their edited versions are published in this volume. Ideas for the Future of the International Monetary System consists of two parts: Part I contains the studies commissioned by the Carli Association - those by Dominick Salvatore; Koichi Hamada; Forrest Capie; Michele Fratianni, Andreas Hauskrecht and Aurelio Maccario; Jürgen von Hagen and Ingo Fender, Michael Artis, Marion Kohler and Jacques Mélitz; Barry Eichengreen; Michele Fratianni and Andreas Hauskrecht; Paolo Savona and Aurelio Maccario; and Elvio Dal Bosco - and the comments by Paul De Grauwe and William Branson, and the editors' conclusions. Part II contains three papers presented at the Florence conference, by Antonio Fazio, Carl Scognamiglio, and Alberto Predieri.
Book Description
Organizations with a diverse workforce will have a leading edge in the New World economy. 'Mentoring and Diversity' illustrates the importance of mentoring as a proactive tool in diversity initiatives, and demonstrates how mentoring can be used to recruit, develop and retain a diverse and innovative workforce.
This book brings together new and innovative perspectives on diversity and mentoring relationships within a variety of international settings. 'Mentoring and Diversity' provides a unique blend of research and practice, and is an indispensable guide for any company that seeks to develop a more diverse workforce. It will serve as a fundamental text for practitioners interested in developing effective mentoring programmes and for researchers seeking to understand these critical and complex relationships.

Book Description
The world is continually changing. As organizations become more diverse, the need to recognize and develop talent within others becomes more critical and more complex. Herein lies the fundamental dilemma that parties to these important relationships face. Based on a recent gathering in Amherst, the contributors of this volume attempted to help each other better understand the issues that they were facing in their own diversified mentoring relationships as mentors, protégés, or both. This volume is the result of their efforts.
Organized into three sections, the book focuses on the different types of mentoring perspectives--theoretical, empirical, and experiential. It addresses the following issues:
*Developmental relationships--the emerging themes and theoretical models that discuss the experiences of various ethnic populations,
*Empirical evidence--qualitative and quantitative research that examines the impact of diverse mentoring relationships,
*First-hand accounts--experiences that recount key lessons learned in various situations, including breaking the glass ceiling, among others.

"Mentoring Dilemmas" explores key issues for organizations.......2000-05-09
This book includes chapters by several authors exploring the connection between mentoring in organizations and diversity. Theory, research and practical experiences are revealed in this timely discussion of two key issues facing organizations today and in the future. Clearly the editors have stumbled upon a critical aspect of "best practice" within organizations - the role of diversified developmental relationships.

Outlines the benefits of the participatory group approach.......2004-07-05
In Pathways Of Diversity And Enlightenment: Critical Reflections For Transformation, Keith Armstrong offers up a series of viewpoints drawn from university affiliated academicians and "self-appointed" scholars with respect to the contemporary condition of higher education in America. Armstrong outlines the benefits of the participatory group approach to define, describe, and study the strengths and weaknesses of the collegiate community today -- a once "ivory tower" society that nowadays has become a microcosm of the larger society in terms of who is allowed to speak and who (covertly or overtly) is compelled to silence. Pathways Of Diversity And Enlightenment is enthusiastically recommended reading, especially for anyone with an interest in developing a free and open academia within a college or university culture of inquiry and expression.

Description:
People of color are not attending US colleges and universities in numbers that are representative of their share of the population. Although state sanctioned privileges of White males, relative to people of color and women, are now prohibited, equal access to education and career opportunities is yet to be realized. White men are paid higher salaries than people of color and women, and in several occupations, inequalities are increasing. Without college education, today's elementary and secondary school students are unlikely to acquire the knowledge and skills that might prepare them for work in which opportunities for advancement and financial reward are greatest and demand is high. An empirical study was conducted in which college students were asked to indicate the importance of various sources of influence on their choice of major. The results indicate that people of color, compared to Whites, and women, compared to men, rely upon different sources. These findings suggest that advising and the media may have an important role to play in achieving diversity in postsecondary education and, ultimately, employment.

Description:
New teachers in the US often are unprepared to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Preparing teachers for diversity has generated widespread interest in mentoring, yet little research has explored a knowledge base for equity-focused mentoring. Drawing on expertise of leading mentor practitioners and a case study, this article builds a framework for what mentors need to know and be able to do to focus new teachers on equity. Mentors need a bi-level and multi-domain knowledge base, targeting both students and teachers. Using a bifocal perspective, mentors view the new teacher up close, but also focus on the larger picture of students. Analyses delineate challenges and tensions in tapping this knowledge base in the action of mentoring.

Description:
This paper reports on the findings from a review of classroom-based action research reports by the masters students of an in-service teacher education programme offered by the Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development in Karachi, Pakistan. In these reports the students played the roles of researchers and mentors, i.e. they worked as mentors with teachers in a school, researched the process of mentoring and reported the findings. I undertook this review to report findings related to impact on schools and classrooms of new approaches to teacher development. While, the findings stopped short of reporting impact of mentoring on classrooms, it revealed significant issues pertaining mentors' roles. There was tension in how these roles were conceptualized within the masters programme and how they were enacted. For example, the mentors were expected to work in a generalist role as mentors, i.e. to work with teachers irrespective of the discipline that the teachers taught. However, experiences from the field showed that perceptions of mentor as a subject specialist dominated the process of mentoring. The paper also reports on other issues pertaining to mentor-mentee interactions in the context of in-service teacher education in a developing country setting.

Errors.......2006-04-27
Either there is a major error on page 256 and 263 or everyone and their brother happens to perceive it incorrectly. The photo and caption are of a John Deere 30 series (2030, 2630, etc.) and it states it is showing a 2010. Two completely different machines! Accuracy and definition are critical in a book like this.

Book Description
Finite element, finite volume and finite difference methods use grids to solve the numerous differential equations that arise in the modelling of physical systems in engineering. Structured grid generation forms an integral part of the solution of these procedures. Basic Structured Grid Generation provides the necessary mathematical foundation required for the successful generation of boundary-conforming grids and will be an important resource for postgraduate and practising engineers.
The treatment of structured grid generation starts with basic geometry and tensor analysis before moving on to identify the variety of approaches that can be employed in the generation of structured grids. The book then introduces unstructured grid generation by explaining the basics of Delaunay triangulation and advancing front techniques. A companion website fully supports this book by providing numerical codes in FORTRAN 77/90 for both structured and unstructured grid generation which will help the reader to develop their understanding and make progress in grid generation.
* A practical, straightforward approach to this complex subject for engineers and students.
* A key technique for modelling physical systems.
* Companion website provides free access to grid generation codes.
Customer Reviews:
A quite useful book on grid generation for beginner.......2006-11-06
The first chapter on tensor analysis is quite appealing and it is still refreshing for me who has experience with tensor analysis. The last chapter on unstructured grid generation is very helpful for me. I think it is a useful book for beginner in this field and can be a valuable reference book for experienced.
In computational fluid mechanics and solid mechanics, finite volume and finite element methods can deal with unstructured meshes relatively easily. So some of the grid generation techniques for finite difference method described in this book maybe less important than, say, 20 years ago.
Excellent book for someone comfortable with calcus.......2006-03-24
I am a CFD engineer but no grid generation person. I bought this book due to its low price ($15 for a pdf format). I am not disappointed with this book at all. If you are comfortable with calculus and somewhat familar with index notation, the derivation in this book is very logical. I was able to use this book to generate a structural mesh using the algebraic method and differential method. The variational method seems to require funtional background and that is beyond me. Another good aspect about this book is that it gives the final equations that one needs to solve and a procedure that one needs to use to generate the grid. A good example is the Winslow method. I was able to use the equations in the book easily to generate the grid. Anyway, I would recommend this book to people who can read the first five pages of it without too much trouble. If you struggle with the first a few pages, this is probably not a good book for you.

Book Description
The most revealing and touching passages written during the American Civil War are found in letters exchanged by loved ones. The letters of South Carolina Cavalryman James Michael Barr to his wife Rebecca offer an excellent example. Barr enlisted as a private in the 5th S.C. Cavalry Regiment in January 1863, just as the fortunes of war began to turn against the South. After serving more than a year in its native state--away from the great battles farther north--the 5th S.C. Cavalry was called to the killing fields of Virginia.
All the while James Barr sent letters home. According to editor Thomas D. Mays, the most valuable of these concern the family farm--a middling operation supported by several slaves. Through his vigorous correspondence, Barr participated in his farm's operation, asking for details and providing instructions.
But Barr also supplied news from the front and described his life as a soldier, including word of the clash at Trevilian Station, where Barr was wounded.
Barr's letters have been preserved over the years by family members and were originally transcribed and compiled for publication by his granddaughter Ruth Barr McDaniel. This new and thoroughly researched volume springs from the efforts of her sons Raymond and Robert McDaniel to bring this unique and informative story to a wider audience.
Customer Reviews:
A compelling, informative primary source.......2001-12-13

A father remembers.......1997-03-05
A deeply religious Mormon family struggles with their son's homosexuality and subsequent death from Aids. The book traces the father's initial resistance to his ultimate acceptance, despite the conflict of organized religion. The book includes journals written by the son, reflecting his ambivalence and turmoil as his sexual orientation became more and more obvious. It is a sad book, as it would be in the tragic loss of a child, but in very important ways, it is a tribute to his life
