Authors Dennis C. Carey and Dayton Ogden present a thorough, insightful guide to choosing a new Chief Executive Officer in this nicely written, concise book. Offering plenty of inside information and real-life corporate examples, the authors explore their ideas without resorting to fluff or to the dry, dull prose that often fills such books. Given their experience helping corporations choose CEOs and other executives, the authors know what they're talking about and understand the tricky issues involved in putting any advice into practice. Their book delivers what it promises, and given that it can be repetitive, it delivers on some of those promises two or three times (but we're quibbling, some of those lessons do bear repeating). We [...] recommend this book to anyone involved in executive succession and recruitment, especially board members (read it now, before you ditch your CEO, not after).

An invaluable guide to this very difficult problem. Ogden, perhaps the world's leading expert in this field, makes a compelling case for deliberate long term planning, tailored to an enterprise's specific needs. His laserlike focus and penetrating analysis seem like a hidden national treasure.

Shareholders naturally assume that boards have succession for the CEO and other top executives all figured out. WRONG! A well kept secret is that many CEOs try to stall in this area, as a way to make themselves more secure.

Even the companies that work in this area can be unprepared. A young CEO may suddenly jump to another company (as Ray Gilmartin did from Becton Dickinson to Merck), die unexpectedly of a heart attack (as Jerry Junkins did at Texas Instruments), or fail to perform to the board's expectations (as has happened to many companies). Couple that with the fact that irresistible forces may mean that the style that worked well in the past won't wash any more, and apparent succession preparation can equal being totally clueless.

The authors are headhunters with Spencer Stuart and share what they learned in interviews during 1996 and 1997 at Met Life, Caterpillar, Hewlett-Packard, Mobil, Continental Grain, SmithKline Beecham, Delta, Mellon Bank, Bestfoods, Foster Wheeler, Hercules, and GTE. They also interspace other examples. One of the difficulties with a book like this is that things don't always turn out as they seem. A lot of praise in the book goes into Coca-Cola's preparation for the unexpected death of Roberto Goizueta. Douglas Ivester is quickly invested, which is where the book ends. But we know that he also was almost as quickly divested as he turned out to be a poor replacement. This replacing CEOs is a tough business. As irresistible forces become stronger and more volatile, replacements will probably occur even more frequently.

The book concludes that 10 key practices are required: Have a strong, involved board; continually expose the top management team to the board; encourage the next generation of CEO prospects to get early experience with outside boards, the media, and the financial community; create an active executive or operating committee so more executives get exposure to an overview of the company, its strategy and issues; do succession planning on an on-going, real-time basis; take as much human drama out of the process as possible (it's especially hard on number twos); tie some of the CEO's compensation to succession planning and progress; have the directors be paid in stock and make additional investments in the company's shares; calibrate the internal candidates with external ones; and develop a culture that encourages succession (a la Built to Last).

So much for the summary. Here are the problems. Although this book purports to be a best practice book, it does not investigate enough companies to succeed. This is actually a limited survey of practices, with picking out some that seem to work better. To be accurate, such a survey would have had to consider in equivalent detail at least 400 companies. A handful won't cut it.

Second, they have to measure of success in succession. They obviously like some better than others. Without some success measure, you cannot pick out best practices.

Third, the book plugs a service that appears to be from Spencer Stuart in callibrating internal and external candidates. To me, that made the book read like a virtual ad rather than a book about management practices.

Fourth, the audience spoken to was mostly boards and CEOs. There are a lot of other stakeholders out there, like customers, employees, suppliers, distributors, and the communities the companies serve. Shouldn't their reaction be considered in deciding which successions work well and which do not?

I could go on, but you get the idea. The authors needed someone to help them design a methodology before they started. Without one, they have produced a book, and some of what it says seems to make sense. With an appropriate methodology, I am sure they could have produced a much better book.

If you want more information on the subject, your best source in my opinion is to read the case studies in Directors & Boards, a magazine devoted to corporate governance. The material I have read in that magazine is consistently superior to what is in this book.

Good luck in overcoming your disbelief stall that people who recruit CEOs should know how to determine best practices in the area of CEO succession.

While this charmingly written book is obviously written for CEOs and Boards of Directors, I found it to be highly relevant to other phases of life from high school graduation to being promoted.

It is always difficult to plan for the future and planning for the future of leadership is especially difficult.

From the best practices of business icons we can all learn a great deal about how to built a more lasting business, club, or school in addition to finding a happy approach to leaving something that has significant meaning.

Enjoy the book and think broadly about its message, I did!

Top Dog in Dog Training.......2003-07-27

This book is written with a great sense of humor and a great sense of reality. Starting with a brief discription of various cattle/sheep working breeds, Mr. Seis goes on to clearly describe how to train a working dog for sheep or cattle. He covers not only the very basics, but also includes information on dog health and housing. A must for anyone training an intelligent dog for ranch work. (the Australian vernacular is interesting also. Know what a dunny is?)

. . .introduction to Astronomy from one of America's foremost Astronomers.

I have a confession to make. Astronomy has always fascinated me -- ever since I was a very small child. When other 2nd graders were talking about whatever it is that normal 2nd graders talk about, I was talking about Clyde Tombaugh, Sir William Herschel, John C. Adams, etc. -- the men who discovered Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. I remember scanning the skies for hours on end with a 6 inch Newtonian reflector borrowed from my uncle. I could go on and on -- but I think you understand my point. I have always loved Astronomy.

This wonderful book should be back in print. It is a readable (and beautiful) college-level introduction to the basic ideas, concepts, and history of this fascinating science. It is perfectly accessible for the layman -- and even for those previously unfamiliar with Astronomy.

Dr. Jastrow's text is clear and well-written, and the illustrations provided suit the discussion.

Laughing out loud.......2005-01-28

Books on writing technical English are quite common, and some of them are useful. However, they are not usually the sort of books to be read for entertainment or for which description "witty and amusing" springs to mind.

Robert Schoenfeld's book is the exception to all this. It has a great deal of perfectly serious things to say, and its advice is generally excellent, but it manages to be effortlessly humorous at the same time. Probably in reality it wasn't effortless at all, but it just reads that way, like the best journalism. Schoenfeld was for many years the editor of the Australian Journal of Chemistry, and most of his book appeared originally as articles in Chemistry in Australia, so he was a sort of journalist, but was clearly a chemist first.

You might doubt that it would be possible to be witty and entertaining about a subject apparently as dry as quantity calculus -- basically, whether you should label the axis of your graph with x (cm), as Schoenfeld and I would prefer, or with x/cm, as many of the leaders in chemical thermodynamics insist with a passion that might seem hard to credit -- but you would be wrong. Even though I have now read the two chapters on this subject many times, I can still read them one more time just for the amusement -- and really, the whole book is like that: Schoenberg manages to find amusing things to say about such uninviting topics as the balancing of parentheses and the use of mathematical symbols in English sentences.

The main (and trivial) complaint that I have about this book is that it is written primarily for chemists, and I would like to have a book that was directed more towards biochemists. I have sometimes thought of stealing Schoenfeld's idea and writing one myself, but unfortunately I'm not witty enough.

Story salutes brave U.S. Air Crews.......2004-02-07

Giants over Korea details the dangerous flights over hostile territory during the Korean conflict. Fulgaro details the harrowing missions of the lumbering WWII vintage bombers in their deadly cat and mouse games with fast Chinese MIG jet fighters. Very technical but still an easy read. The author effectively uses great photographs and original news articles in the book.

If you are a little suspicious of the medical profession and if you fear the day when you have to take a loved one to a hospital please read this. Or better yet, give it to whomever might be taking you. This is not only alarming but it is a wonderful personal love story. It puts it all in perspective. If you want to read a great book that nobody seems to know about, this is a great discovery.

a true story of love, lies and medical mis-management.......1998-09-12

When we're sick, we need to think the doctor knows enough, and cares. But something went horribly wrong in the medical treatment of Monroe Hirsch. The change in his personality was sudden, unexplained, even denied by the health professionals who did know the reason.

This is a love story and true, told by Monroe's wife. Seeing the man who'd loved her replaced by a beligerent and distrusful stranger, she tells how she sought to find answers, and any way at all to help him.

Winnie had every reason to expect competence and honesty from doctors, having seen it at work for so long. Monroe was an eminent optometrist, Dean of the School of Optometry at the University of California at Berkeley. Winnie had worked with him in his practice and knew the demanding standards he set for himself. But professionalism is like every other form of goodness -- an ideal to build again every day. The best of us admit to falling short somehow, daily. This story reminds us that some don't admit to falling short.

Deliberate lies and false hopes make dirty wounds. The cruelest aspect of the deceit Winnie faced was that it turned her own strengths against her. In situations of alienation, fair-minded people look first to themselves. In the face of difficulty, responsible people try harder. With intelligence and courage, Winnie battled alone and lonely, often against herself, for something already lost.

There's redemption here too. Winnie did find answers, and did have some last months of better knowledge and a kind of peace before her husband died. And now her story carries a powerful message. Even in a medical crisis, we must trust our own persistent convictions. And we're entitled to stay in control.

I was moved by this book -- angered, inspired, saddened and empowered. I wish everyone, particularly every woman could read it.
