In On the Great Plains, author Geoff Cunfer poses an alternative scenario: that people were not the masters of nature on the Great Plains. Land use in America's vast interior prairies has stayed remarkably stable throughout the twentieth century, changing little as droughts came and went, as farmers shifted from horses to tractors, and as federal subsidies and fluctuating crop prices transformed the economics of farming. An equilibrium between natural and human forces emerged as farmers plowed and planted the same amount of cropland during most of this period, maintaining two-thirds of the Great Plains in unplowed, native vegetation.

To support his theory, Cunfer looks at the entire Great Plains (450 counties in ten states), tapping historical agricultural census data paired with GIS mapping to illuminate land use on the Great Plains over 130 years. Structure and composition of vegetation and abundance of breeding birds in grasslands seeded to Old World bluestem (Bothriochloa ischmaeum) were compared to native mixed prairie in the southern Great Plains of North America. Abundance of birds was determined using fixed-radius point counts. Detrended correspondence analysis was used to compare plant community composition and canonical correspondence analysis was used to examine the relationships between plant species composition and vegetation structure with the bird community. Plant species composition differed distinctly between seeded grassland and native mixed prairie, but the differences were not reflected in habitat structure, bird community composition, or abundance of bird species. Seeded grassland was inferior to native mixed prairie in terms of diversity of plant species, but that difference did not translate into meaningful differences in structure that drove habitat selection by breeding birds. Conservation programs that promote establishment of seeded grassland and do not allow for suitable disturbance regimes will selectively benefit a narrow suite of birds regardless of plant species composition.

Grazing management affects ecosystem function through impacts on soil condition. We investigated the effects of long-term (over 70 years) grazing on soil properties and nitrous oxide (N"2O) emission within a moderately grazed native vegetation pasture (MGP), heavily grazed native vegetation pasture (HGP), and a fertilized crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum (Fisch. ex. Link) Schult.) pasture (FCWP) near Mandan, ND, USA. Grazing-induced changes in species composition and N fertilizer application contributed to differences in soil properties and N"2O emission between pastures. Soil organic C (SOC) was 5.7Mgha^-^1 greater in FCWP and HGP than MGP at 0-5cm, whereas HGP had 2.4Mgha^-^1 more SOC than FCWP and MGP at 5-10cm. At 30-60cm, SOC in FCWP was 4.0 and 7.5Mgha^-^1 greater than in HGP and MGP, respectively. Particulate organic matter (POM) C and N in the surface 5cm of FCWP were three- and five-fold greater, respectively, than in HGP and MGP. Acidification from N fertilization in FCWP decreased soil pH and cation exchange capacity compared to HGP and MGP in the surface 5cm. Annual N"2O emission was over three-fold greater in FCWP compared to HGP and MGP, and was positively associated with POM-C across all pastures (P@?0.0001; r^2=0.85). Results from this study suggest fertilized crested wheatgrass enhances deep storage of SOC, but contributes to surface acidification and greater N"2O emission relative to native non-fertilized pastures in the northern Great Plains.

When legislation was passed in 1948 giving women permanent status in the regular and reserve Navy, it was largely due to the efforts of Joy Bright Hancock, the author of this revealing memoir. Her prominent role was acknowledged at the time by the secretary of the navy who credited her ideals, energy, and enthusiasm as the moving force behind the historic integration of women into the U.S. Navy, including the 1942 establishment of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). This personal account of those formative years has long been considered the best study available. Originally published in 1972 and out of print for nearly twenty-five years, it is now being reissued in paperback to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the birth of the WAVES.

Hancock's own work as a Yeoman in World War I offered the armed services a lesson in the benefits of having women in uniform. Dr. Benjamin Spock was a classic American rebel, a man who rejected conventional wisdom in favor of experiential truth. From his birth on May 2, 1903, to his death on March 15, 1998, Spock embraced many of the 20th century's defining social and intellectual trends, from Freudianism to antiwar protest. Yet all his actions sprang from a deeply ingrained sense of morality not so different from that of his decidedly Victorian mother.

"Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do." With these words in the 1946 first edition of Baby and Child Care, Spock lobbed a gentle bomb into the world of pediatric advice, dominated in the first half of the century by authoritarian scolds. The radicalism of Spock's basic idea--more attention to developing a child's individual nature and less to regulating it by rigid rules--was made palatable by his warm tone. Maier's thoughtful coverage of Spock's controversial political activism--from demonstrations against the Vietnam War during the 1960s to protests over cuts in social services during the Reagan Administration--reminds us that it emanated from the same world view consistently expressed in all the editions of Baby and Child Care. Spock was indeed "one of the great liberals of the 20th century," but he was a liberal in the broadest sense, like the young parents who read his book so eagerly:

Journalist and biographer Thomas Maier presents a candid portrait of one of the most famous child care advisors in America in Dr. Spock: An American Life, an informed and informative, 540-page biography that shows this public figure's human side, as well as his willingness to face down controversy, whether in the realm of raising children or in his stringent opposition to the Vietnam War. A detailed, involving, and evenhanded depiction, Dr. Spock: An American Life is very highly recommended reading.

I've been reading biographies lately and this one is the best I've read so far. I found it interesting and easy to read. I was impressed with the extensive research done by the author and I was impressed with how we are given an honest portrayal of Spock...the good points and the bad.

Although we are given glimpses of the dark side of this famous man, I did not end up disliking him. In fact, it made me want to go out and reread his childcare book. It's weird, but in a way I respect his opinions more, knowing he was not perfect.

I highly recommend this book!

Dr. Spock Made A Difference.......1999-10-27

My mother read Dr. Spock, as did I when I had my kids. He was not permissive and did not advise us to raise impolite poorly behaved children. Fortunately this book manages to convey this. Dr. Spock's legacy has been maligned and cheapened by ignorant people, most of whom never read the good Doctor. This book presents a full picture of the man in his weakness and strength. I think Spock would have been content to stand on the record. This book is long overdue. Thank you to Thomas Maier and thank you to Dr. Spock.

Compelling biography of fasinating man........1999-01-04

"Dr. Spock: An American Life" is a powerful story. In fact, once I got started, I couldn't put down Thomas Maier's book. The writing is crisp and to the point. At the same time Maier fills his book with wonderful details that brings Benjamin Spock to life.

Maier does a terrific job of capturing the different facets of the doctor's life and personality. The author devotes a good part of his book to Spock's troubles with his children and his first wife. Yet "Dr.Spock" never demeans its subject.

If you are curious about Benjamin Spock, or enjoy intriging stories...or just delight in good writing,read this book!
