Book was excellent, alot of good advice on wilderness living.......1998-08-14

I really enjoyed reading this book. There was quite a bit of good advice concerning wilderness living and survival. Also included interesting tales concerning Brad and Vena Angiers experiences living in the British Columbia wilderness. I found the style of writing to be quite easy to read and the explanations to be easily understandable. Would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in living in the wilderness or just enjoys reading about people who have done it.

Leaving the Wilderness.......2003-08-05

From a man's point of view, after hearing the basic idea and theme of Leaving the Wilderness, I didn't think I would enjoy it. So, after buying it for my wife and her not reading it, I picked it up one day, much to my delight, and I could not put it down. Another reviewer said that this is a book that "every woman should read" and I TOTALLY DISAGREE. THIS IS A BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD READ! Your emotions will range from happiness, sadness, anger, etc., etc. You will love this book, I PROMISE!

Still I Rise.......2003-06-10

Author and poet, Tonya Blount unfolds the story of a young woman's journey for self-love and restoration in Leaving The Wilderness. For eleven years, Jordan Baez has endured physical, verbal and mental abuse at the hands of her malicious husband, Franklin. Tonya Blount has illustrated an unforgettable and emotive female protagonist in Leaving The Wilderness. Ms. Blount's poetic writing style is both fluid and enchanting allowing readers to empathize with the main character. I would have liked to read more about Jordan's rediscovery of self as she mends the broken pieces of her life. Nevertheless, Ms. Blount's debut novel will speak to women in the midst of their wilderness experience and serve as a testimony to those who have been stripped of their self-worth. A must read for men and women alike.

"Leaving the Wilderness" was ingeniously written It discloses how an abusee overcame many dire impediments and triumphantly rised above it all.
Revenge wasnt the storyline in Blounts novel. Eventhough she battled several diverse worlds: Good verses Evil; Love verses Hate; Emotions verses Spiritual.
She ensured us that her lessons were well erudite. By allowing us to walk candidily with her to that spiritual intercession . Where she discovered she found her place of counterpoise.: Her Lord and Savior!
As a reader , I'd like to applaud and thank Ms.Tonya Blount, for showing myself. That if we keep God first and believe with all our hearts.. That we too, can obviate any stumbling blocks in ones life. While holding steadfast to faith; We too can avoid our pitfalls along the way. But we must believe!
As i conclude with (Psalms 23:4..... "Yea, though i walk through the valley of shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, Your rod and Your staff, will comfort me.)

This novel was great! It made me feel as though I am not alone. I experienced similar circumstances and I used to feel stupid and alone. But through reading this book, I found that I am not the only woman who has experienced the degrading, jealous hatred from a male counterpart. More than anything this book was not just about the abuse but how it was overcome. When you have faith and a firm belief and understanding of a higher power you will always come out on top regardless of what you are going through!! Ms. Blount I can not wait for your next novel. Jordan feels like one of my sister friends!! You go girl.

A woman ahead of her time........2003-08-10

This amazing biography of crystallographer is even more interesting because it is the author's first book. Despite being a non-scientist, Ferry does a superb job of exploring the life of her subject. It is a joy to read, treating with equal respect Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin's personal and scientific life. The central role of crystallography (with excursions into biology, chemistry, and physics) is not minimized, but it would be easily understandable to the non-scientific reader. Besides being a woman scientist in Great Britain at a time when women were not even eligible for college-level degrees at some schools, Dorothy was a successful wife and mother, raising several children almost alone while her husband worked in faraway places. But rather than concentrate on the difficulties, Dorothy put all her efforts into pursuing science, and thus she became fantastically successful, eventually winning the Nobel Prize for her work on the structures of Vitamin B12 and penicillin. Everyone in her field respected her, no one suggested her proper place was anywhere else, and so she avoided many of the pitfalls women in science often face. As long as she lived, Dorothy worked for what she believed in, whether it was solving the structures of complicated bio-active molecules, peace, or international communication. She built friendships all over the world, and used her fame and personality to help people. This book will make you a Dorothy Hodgkin fan, which is a tribute to both the subject's worthiness and the author's skill.

Good Textbook, Limited Value Otherwise.......2006-09-06

This is a good textbook for teaching, and not as good of a source for research for real world application reference material, which is what I try to maintain a library to utilize. Very basic material coverage, good for students.

Indispensable books for safety and reliability engineers.......2004-08-23

Alhough Ang and Tang's Volumes I and II are already over 20 years old, I consider these books as one of the best on probabilistic design methods in civil engineering. The books cover topics such as 'statistical decision analysis (including CBA, MCA, MCDM)', 'queueing models', 'extreme value theory', 'Monte Carlo simulation', 'failure probability calculation' and 'system reliability techniques'. A huge amount of examples are embedded in the theory. They are ideal to be used as examination questions (which the reviewer succesfully does for his courses on 'Probabilistic Design' and 'Probabilistic Design in Hydraulic Engineering' at TU Delft, The Netherlands).

Civil engineers with an interest in design of maritime -, hydraulic - and coastal structures will miss the probabilistic description of sea waves and current loads. The second edition (2000) of Goda may fill this gap (available at Amazon under 981023256X). Engineers interested in probabilistic description of structural dynamics are referred to the second edition (2004) of YK Lin and GQ Cai (available at Amazon under 0071438009). The connection of probability theory with finite element models (one of the reviewer's main fields of interest) is not covered by the above mentioned books. Something for Volume III...?

Still the best book.......1999-12-28

I have used this book and Vol 2 in my graduate and undergraduate courses. Having used a variety of texts for teaching and learning about probability and statistics in an engineering context, I would say the two volumes by Ang and Tang have no rivals. Lots and lots of good engineering type problems.

Excellent text for beginning engineering probability study........1999-04-05

We used this text as the first half of a graduate course in engineering reliability. It presented the concepts clearly and in terms of engineering problems rather than card picking and coin flipping like many other probability and statistics texts. It also provided a thorough treatment of the mathematical basis of the sciences of probability and statistics.

The second volume is also an excellent text, though I have had trouble locating it recently. It treats the issues of reliability and decision analysis in more detail.

This is the story of an American nurse who chose to serve the people of Lebanon. It is a fascinating account of a young woman finding herself in a Civil War and the impact that has on her own life and those around her. Reading it I felt as if I was having a conversation with the author, it is definitely her voice, and speaks with an astonishing mixture of courage and humility.

The best book ever.......2006-07-21

I received a copy of this book as a birthday gift in Aug 2005. At the time I was on vacation in San Francisco, so I didn't really start reading the book until I was on an airplane flying back to Pittsburgh (through Washington DC). What happened during my flight and layover in Dulles (6-7 hours in total) was shocking to me, as I was unable to let go of this book. I was glued to it and didn't even once yawn or take a break, simply because I couldn't. I also couldn't resist crying while reading some of the most terrible and heart-breaking stories that the author witnessed during the war in Lebanon. After reading this book, my perspective about nurses and nursing in general took a 180 degree shift, as I now appreciate and respect the vital role that nurses play in our lives.
In conclusion, I can say with confidence that so far, this is the best book that I've ever read in my 26 years of existance on this planet.
