Book Description
This book, which will complement Ben Evans’ previous work: Space Shuttle Columbia – Her Missions and Crews, is designed to cast minds back to a time when the Shuttle was truly the future: untarnished by disaster and bolstered by apparent success. It was a time when astronauts confidently expected to fly seven, eight or nine missions in their careers, when missions would be launched twice a month, when virtually anybody could travel into space and the fabled final frontier was drawing inexorably closer as each year passed. The book will tell the stories of Challenger’s missions from the points of view of the astronauts, engineers and scientists who flew and knew her and the managers, technicians and ground personnel who designed her and nursed her from humble beginnings as a structural test article into one of the most capable Shuttles in NASA’s service.
It will combine technical esoterica with interviews, stories and anecdotes from the lifetime of this remarkable spacecraft. Challenger veterans, including Gordon Fullerton and Vance Brand, will describe their experiences and the differences between Challenger and her sister ships. The development of Challenger herself will be explored in detail, including her design, development, construction and preparation for missions.
Customer Reviews:
Funny and informative at the same time.......2001-06-15
This book is a children's introduction to the most awesome (if unseen) inhabitant of the night sky: the black hole! Using simple words and concepts, the book explains where black holes come from, and describes their nature. This is all done using the vehicle of a small boy first talking to an astronomer, and then using his imagination to travel to a black hole wearing a space suit.
My seven-year-old son jumped at this book. I liked that it was pretty easy for him to understand (except that the author repeatedly mentioned "mass" without ever defining the word). The pictures are wonderfully whimsical, while still contributing forcefully to what is being discussed in the text. Overall, I would say that this is a great book for children - funny and informative at the same time.
Real science presented in easy words and great illustrations.......1998-05-30
What happens to a star when it dies? A small child dons a spacesuit to find out. The gravity of the black hole stretches him out. Another child considers a thimbleful of black hole on a seesaw, outweighing a stack of elephants.
This book is full of hard science. But it is presented in easy words that a child of 4-8 can understand. The bright illustrations are full of motion and lend understanding and excitement to the subject.

Easy puzzles, silly content, totally unrealistic.......2004-01-30
The publisher states the reading level is age 9-12. I used this as a read aloud for my 6 year old and the content was fully understandable. This is a non-consumable puzzle book. My son enjoyed it and thought much more of it than I did.
The format is comic-book style with cartoon-like illustrations. The storyline is a bit silly. Two school children on a field trip to a space center walk into a horizontal-lying space shuttle, which then suddenly takes off and lands on the moon. The shuttle is running on autopilot. The moon is inhabited by a human who was an engineer for the government; he runs an army of robots that attack the children. They escape unharmed and take off for Mars. En route they are hit by a comet, which results in minor damage to an external camera. They teach themselves to fix it while the shuttle continues on its' journey. When they arrive on Mars they meet "rock people" who are talking, walking red rocks with legs that talk backwards and eat rocks. Suddenly the man from the Moon appears and is happy to meet the rock people. He decides to live there. The boy and girl return to the ship. They are told they were accidentally locked inside for 20 minutes. Their pockets are full of proof that they really did go space traveling, though.
On each double-page spread there is a question that must be answered. Sometimes the answer lies on previous pages and other times it takes careful looking to find the answers. An example is where did they see the man on the Moon before? Answer: his face was on a poster at the space center.
The entire storyline is silly and unrealistic. Children who love learning about space may not appreciate the parts that go against reality (i.e. a man living on the moon alone). Most of the questions are not very challenging, even for a 6 year old.
This is one in a series by Usbourne.

Book Description
Mathematical Models of Spoken Language presents the motivations for, intuitions behind, and basic mathematical models of natural spoken language communication. A comprehensive overview is given of all aspects of the problem from the physics of speech production through the hierarchy of linguistic structure and ending with some observations on language and mind.
The author comprehensively explores the argument that these modern technologies are actually the most extensive compilations of linguistic knowledge available.Throughout the book, the emphasis is on placing all the material in a mathematically coherent and computationally tractable framework that captures linguistic structure.
It presents material that appears nowhere else and gives a unification of formalisms and perspectives used by linguists and engineers. Its unique features include a coherent nomenclature that emphasizes the deep connections amongst the diverse mathematical models and explores the methods by means of which they capture linguistic structure.
This contrasts with some of the superficial similarities described in the existing literature; the historical background and origins of the theories and models; the connections to related disciplines, e.g. artificial intelligence, automata theory and information theory; an elucidation of the current debates and their intellectual origins; many important little-known results and some original proofs of fundamental results, e.g. a geometric interpretation of parameter estimation techniques for stochastic models and finally the author's own unique perspectives on the future of this discipline.
There is a vast literature on Speech Recognition and Synthesis however, this book is unlike any other in the field. Although it appears to be a rapidly advancing field, the fundamentals have not changed in decades. Most of the results are presented in journals from which it is difficult to integrate and evaluate all of these recent ideas. Some of the fundamentals have been collected into textbooks, which give detailed descriptions of the techniques but no motivation or perspective. The linguistic texts are mostly descriptive and pictorial, lacking the mathematical and computational aspects. This book strikes a useful balance by covering a wide range of ideas in a common framework. It provides all the basic algorithms and computational techniques and an analysis and perspective, which allows one to intelligently read the latest literature and understand state-of-the-art techniques as they evolve.
Book Description
Ashdown and Caudill explain how one of the Civil War's most colorful and controversial characters became a legend during the war and evolved into a mythical figure after the war and into the 21st century through literature, art, cinema, and TV. As Tony Horwitz discovered in Confederates in the Attic, the legacy of Nathan Bedford Forrest continues to polarize the South even today as a symbol of the Lost Cause and hero to working-class Southerners on one hand, and emblem of slavery and lingering racial tensions on the other.
Customer Reviews:
A Difficult Premise..............2007-06-21
We all know that some fictional characters become "real"...James Bond...Sherlock Holmes...heck, you'll never convince me that Nero Wolfe isn't real, and that if I go to 918 West 35th. Street, I won't find him. Conversely, sometimes real people, who lived real lives, become so shrouded in myth and legend that they become "fictional"...Houdini...Babe Ruth...Patrick Henry [a Nurse once engaged me in a hot arguement about him; I never did convince her]... Nathan Bedford Forrest......
This book is an attempt to show him in both aspects. This is NOT a biography of the greatest Cavalry officer who ever lived, and doesn't pretend to be. There is a good, basic, sketch of the high points, and that's sufficient here. Forrest was well and truly real, but a lot of myths have grown up around him. A good portion of those are addressed. For example, the stories of his semiliterate English are exaggerated. Unlike Yogi, he really said the things he said, but not nearly as badly as we've been led to believe. Several novels have used him as a fictional character, but, interestingly, he's never made it to the silver screen. [the portrayl in "Birth of a Nation" is so far off as not to count].
The Civil War continues to generate passions; many of us think if its personages as a living presence. Nathan Bedford Forrest remains controversial, and real, to this day. If you want a full biography, there are several good ones. If you want to look at some aspects of his life that you hadn't thought of before, this volume is a good place to start.
Forrest: The Bronze Man (until they sandblasted him in Memphis).......2006-02-02
Let me attempt to tell you something about this book without trying to make it yet another episode in the continuing (after 140 years) saga of the Civil War, which, obviously, in some minds (the world's bloodiest battlefields by far) still rages as ferociously today as it did, say, on a hillside outside a once-peaceful little town in Pennsylvania on a warm July afternoon in 1863.
The book tries to explain how Nathan Bedford Forrest, the man and some of his exploits, became mythologized by various forces (newspaper accounts, biographies, personal reminiscences, popular histories, novels, and movies) down through the years[...]
The first half of the book is by far the best. Where the first half looks carefully at how Southerners and Northerners both looked at Forrest and took from his life-story what best suited them (the South: his fearless personal bravery, his victories in battle, his backwoods reputation and man-of-action personality, his defense for the Lost Cause; the North: his racial butchery at Ft. Pillow, his hate-filled association with the KKK, his guerrilla warfare tactics rather than the "manly, honest" standard tactics practiced by the "better" generals), the second half becomes just a cursory summary of all the books and movies that featured Forrest as a main character.
It's obvious that Forrest still has the ability to touch nerves in this country, especially in the South. The authors attribute Sherman as saying there would never be peace in Tennessee until Forrest was dead; maybe there's still some truth to that. Forrest had very little impact on the outcome of the war (ironically, his own generals shunned him), and the claim that if Forrest had been leading the Southern Armies instead of Lee, the South would have won is wishful thinking that borders on the ludicrous. But that's what myths can do to people - give hope where no hope has any right to exist. Of course in a negative sense myths can also house and comfort bad decisions and poor choices. Forrest's mythology continues to do both, good and bad.
They come neither to praise nor bury Forrest.......2005-09-01
Let me see if I can clear up some of the misinformation floating around about this book:
1. This book is not, nor does it claim to be a history of Nathan Bedford Forrest. It is an always-compelling, often-convincing retelling of the emergence of an American myth. The authors are at places concerned with "facts" and "truths," but more to the point they focus on how something seemingly as concrete as "fact" or "truth" morphs into mythology. In this quest, they've chosen their subject well, as hardly a figure in American culture lends itself so favorably to such an effort.
2. The authors use well-known literary devices to draw out their subject. They do not call Forrest a comic book character but use the analogy to illustrate a point. They do not liken him to Forrest Gump but merely note the power of NBF's legacy, a legacy so enduring that many a Southern lad has been named "Forrest" in tribute.
3. There is no "bias" against Forrest in this book, nor is there a "bias" for him. For many Southerners, this is a cardinal sin in and of itself. An earlier review claimed the book is full of "manufactured lies." To the contrary, Ashdown and Cawdill are deft in their handling of "facts." They are careful to note where historic information on Forrest is conflicting and describe how this disparity is used to feed competing myths. But, full of lies? Such a claim should always be accompanied by direct quotes from the book.
4. The first-half of the book is indeed the better half, as the second part seems rushed and largely superfluous. Forrest's fame and infamy prevail. We hardly need a laundry list of books and movies to confirm this fact.
Anyone who comes to this book with an agenda - to either praise or bury Forrest - is likely to be disappointed and possibly even incensed when they find nothing to feed their zeal. Objective readers, however, will be well-rewarded.

Very Enjoyable.......2003-05-17
This book was published by Xlibris. I wonder whether the author tried the regular publishing houses first and was rejected; I would imagine so. I really enjoyed this book. However, I doubt it will gain any popularity unless it were to be energetically marketed. I think this is a pity, but I guess this is the nature of the business. The cream does not float to the top. And phenomena like Harry Potter and Stephen King, etc. depend upon niche markets and voluminous production. Thus people such as me will constantly have to search through the haystacks for needles which we really enjoy. This one was a find.
I happened to see this book on Xlibris.com. I read an excerpt and I liked the writing style - very easy. By the way it continues the same way throughout the book. Then, the subject - psychoanalytic experiences - interested me; as it turned out, that was a small part of the book. At least 2/3rds of the book is about his personal development during the 1920's, 30's, and 40's.
It's hard to really describe the contents because it is really a collection of anecdotes about interesting people the author has met. They are great fun. It is like your 93 year old grandfather telling you about his life's experiences. On page 198 he writes, "...there's not much more that's valuable than a good laugh and a happy memory." That is the essence of this author.
One chapter of this book I will never forget. It is an interview he did with a young man who murdered about 5 people. He was doing an evaluation for the court. We read about these people in the newspaper or we hear about them on TV, but how often do we get to sit down with them and ask them, "What made you do it?" This chapter does that, and I was horrified by the picture I got of this young murderer. It actually made me depressed for a while. The author wrote, "I had come as close to the essence of evil as I'd ever care to confront." That's how I felt reading it.
Most of the book consists of happy, interesting events. I hope this book attains popularity; it deserves it. I enjoyed it and felt I learned a lot.
