It's Accounting.......2006-11-04
I bought this book for a Managerial accounting class. I found that chapters to be well written and the example easy to follow. Enron gets used a lot. What I didn't like was that problems in the back of the book are not as clear as they could be. Most of the time, I plug in the wrong formula. So that part could have been clearer. The answers are all on a CD, that access a website for the answers. So if you like me and still have dial-up, you may have a problem there too. However I am still pulling a B in the class, so I'm getting something.
Very Practical Book,Classic.......2006-01-27
Jerry really knows how to help people learn accounting. Learning accounting is about practising but not reading. Reading helps but it won't solve problems. The one thing I really appreciate about this book is Jerry uses real life accounting practice within companies from different industries to illustrate every single chapter, within which all the accounting theories and principals naturally flow. You can see all the kinds of accounting problems with actual number and data being solved with the application of relevant accounting theories, principals and methods. You know how real things are done. I have read many accounting books, among which loads of books lack exercises for me to practice after I read certain chapter. But buying Jerry's book, you get two books, one for reading, and one for exams. Nearly half of the book is Exam Questions, which emulate my real exams quite well. I can't believe an accounting without good exercise questions is an book. If you seriously want to pass exams and know how the real accounting is done, this is the book for you!
No solutions... How are you supposed to check your progress?.......2005-09-12
This book is good about listing the objectives and showing you exactly where to find the answers for the multiple choice questions. For example: What is the purpose of a job cost sheet? The book highlights the area where the answer is. Easy huh? Well, what about the actual accounting problems? The detailed problems at the end of each chapter have NO SOLUTIONS to them, and you can't buy a solutions guide unless you are an instructor! I'm not an accounting wizard, so I have to actually practice before it sticks in my brain... imagine that. I guess they expect everyone to see the problems and read about the problems and automatically get it. They work out a "Demonstration Problem" for you, but that only applies to some of the problems at the end of each chapter.

Book Description
This book provides the basics of both financial and managerial accounting. Financial accounting provides primarily monetary information about business activities that result in the financial statements that are published for use by people outside the business. Managerial accounting provides monetary and nonmonetary information about business activities that result in supporting details for the financial statements or that provide information for internal organizational users to plan, control, or make decisions about operations. It is not intended to be a comprehensive volume in either financial or managerial accounting, but an introduction for non-business majors. The book takes a user orientation, steering clear of detailed, technical discussions. Many interesting examples from the travel industry are integrated throughout to catch the reader's interest and to apply concepts to companies they may know.

Customer Reviews:
Working Without Power.......2001-04-09
I find all Tom lambert's books well written, relevant and practical. This is no exception. If you want to really understand and practise ethical, influencing skills this is the book for you. If power corrupts, influence gets the right things done at the right time. No one who takes leadership seriously should be without this book.
A Serious Look At What It Takes To Be Persuasive.......1997-09-03
Written in a text-book style, "The Power of Influence" is an educated look at the psychology of persuasion. You will find out how to listen and deal with difficult people and situations, use body language effectively and show empathy, use verbal language to your advantage, and use power effectively. A workbook at the end enables you to practice specific skills.
This book uses numerous examples from the sales profession, but the concepts can be applied to other work environments. It is more a discussion of psychology than an intensive, skill-building handbook for those wanting to develop people skills at work. Although it is a dry, wordy, difficult read, I would recommend it for sales professionals and for the student or teacher interested in the psychology of influence.
For further reading on controlling your own circle of influence, I would highly recommend any of Stephen Covey's inspirational books, such as "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People", "First Things First", and "Principle-Centered Leadership"

BOOK DETAILS:
Lavender Edited by Maria Lis Balchin
Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Industrial Profile
Published by Taylor and Francis, (2002) ISBN: 0 415 28486 4
Considering increased inclination of people to develop commercial and medicinal crops worldwide, it is very important for Indians to consider working in this area, with strong technical understanding. Amongst many aromatic plants, Lavender seems to be very important, as indicated by workshops at IHBT on lavender oils. This is also true, because, India, being a geographically versatile land, it is possible to grow various species and sub species of Lavender. The book edited by Maria Lis Balcin, gives a very elaborate information about Lavender plant, which includes it's different botanical species, cultivation requirement, Lavender grown in different countries, harvesting and distillation of oil, standardization of oil, chemical analysis of oils from lavender and lavendin, therapeutic properties of lavender oil and application in aromatherapy. In this synopsis, I would like to describe in brief about the contents of the book and usage.
It is very important to identify exact botanical species, before it is considered for commercial cultivation, so that one can work towards supplying optimal growth conditions for the plant. In this respect, this book is very helpful, because, it includes many illustrations and photos for easy understanding and I am sure they will help in identifying the said species.
The book talks about modern ways of lavender plant propagation, use of modern techniques such as cell and tissue culture hybridization and development of better quality, or I would say industrially beneficial species. While discussing chemical composition of the Essential Oil (EO), the book talks about variation in various species of Lavendula. Not only this, one chapter talks about differences in Lavender oil from crops of the same species grown by ten different cultivators. This article is very important from growers' point as well as from distillers' point. When we need same odour profile of lavender oil, for perfumery application, it is important to pay attention to get same crop variant. Here, when I say same variant, I do not mean same botanical variant, but I mean 'same' with respect to `oil' quality.
Though this book talks about many aspects of Lavender oil and extraction procedures, I feel, it should have had some additional information and guideline about Lavender cultivation. This should include climatic conditions required, soil, maintenance, good harvesting practices, and storage of foliage and so on. Various country profiles should have been discussed. This information would have been of great importance to people of India, to consider Lavender cultivation as a source of income. Also, it would help them to work for obtaining oil; which is superior for therapy as well as in perfumery.
Let me now give you overview of the chapters in the book:
In the first chapter, the editor introduces the viewer about the Lavendula spp.
In the second chapter, Tim Upson discusses detail taxonomy and classification of Lavendula genus belonging to family Labiatae. He also teaches us, how to identify various Lavendula spp, based on leaf structure, inflorescence and other botanical anatomy.
In the third chapter, the editor, along with Jo Castle discusses Usage of Lavendula spp, from 40 AD till to date.
In the forth chapter, the author discusses how the Lavendula spp are classified and re-classified over a period of time. The classification started from the year 1937. She also discusses historical development for Lavendula hybrid development and cultivation.
In chapter five, the editor along with Henry Head talks about growing of Lavender for essential oil production in England. This chapter lists the species, which could be grown in England.
In chapter six, Simon Charlesworth discusses about the retail lavender nursery. This information is of very much importance for someone who is REALLY keen to have Lavender plantation developed, or help Lavender plantation.
In chapter seven, Rosemary Holmes, discusses about Lavender growing in Australia. It also gives cultivation requirement, and useful tips for business.
In chapter eight, the editor, talks about naming and misnaming of Lavender cultivars. This chapter is very important for the student of essential oil because it tells us, how the crops with different names, in reality are not different. It is just that different cultivators use different names. Reading this, one would definitely understand how the usage of Botanical Name is very important.
In chapter nine, J. Harborne and C. Williams talks about phytochemistry of the genus Lavendula. This means mono and sesquiterpenoids present in the genus Lavendula. It discusses chemical identification of Lavendula spp., based on chemical analysis of essential oil.
In chapter ten, E.F.K. Henry discusses distillation of Lavender type oils. It gives very good design of the distiller that needs to be uses while distillating Lavender oil.
In chapter eleven, the editor Maria discusses Lavender essential oil, its standardization, quality assurance and identification.
In chapter twelve, G. Buchbauer discusses therapeutic properties of Lavender oil. I feel, this chapter should be read very carefully, and understood well, before Lavender oil is used for therapy.
In chapter thirteen, the editor with S. Hart discusses pharmacology of Lavendula essential oil. I find this chapter is very important not only from application point of view, but it is an important chapter academically.
In chapter fourteen, psychological effects of Lavender are discussed by M. Kirk Smith. This oil is regarded as calming agent, based on individual study and needs to be studied well. And author says these properties can be difficult to identify or pin down.
In chapter fifteen, S. Deans discusses antimicrobial properties of Lavender. He discusses chemical components responsible for such activity and also lists various microorganisms against which the oil or its components works.
In chapter sixteen, the editor discusses use of Lavender oil in aromatherapy. She gives different modes of application of oil for therapy and physiological effects of the oil on subjects. This also includes a discussion on toxicity due to Lavender oil.
In chapter seventeen, the editor, along with R. Wells, discusses perfumery use of lavender and lavendin oils. I think it is a good introduction of Lavender oil in perfumery application along with other compatible oils.
In chapter eighteen, Maria discusses use of Lavender and Lavender oil in cosmetic products, in flavours and medicinal products.
In chapter nineteen, the editor discusses why it is important to have scientific basis for all that is said about Lavender. This includes standard authentification tests, pharmacological evaluation, and therapeutical findings about Lavender oil.
In chapter twenty, M.P. Ilieva-Stoilova, A. Ivanov Pavlov and E.G. Kovatcheva-Apostolova, discuss about biotechnical applications for Lavender cultivation with specific enrichments. Here, they talk about the spp with higher rosamarinic acid synthesis.
In chapter twenty-one, S. Andrews discusses historical review about two hybrids of the genus Lavendula.
In chapter twenty two, D.J. Charles, E.N.C Renaud and J.E. Simon give comparison of same Lavender spp, but different cultivars and organically grown. This chapter tells us, how important standard cultivation procedures are.
In chapter twenty-three, Maria, along with S. Hart discuss chemical profile of Lavender oils and pharmacology along with other essential oils.
In the last chapter, Maria Lis Balchin, the editor, tells us, chemical composition of essential oils, obtained from different spp. of the genus Lavendula. These variations are due to climatic, geographic or seasonal differences. These also could be due to the amount of watering and fertilizers used as well as variation in genotype.
In nutshell: When I read the book, I realized that there is lot we need to know about Lavender oil, give scientific inputs understanding this spp. And this book, to some extend gives us most of the technical `know how' of Lavender in commercial sense. One may think that why farmers, traders or distillers should know scientific information in such great details. But I think, technical and thorough knowledge is the key for successful commercial and industrial application of any aromatic and medicinal plant.
I hope, in near future to have one more chapter, growth of Lavendula spp. in India.

Customer Reviews:
An unfortunate personality.......2007-08-27
I was attracted to this book firstly because of the surname (you never know who might be a relative) and the subject as an ex-airforce pilot who flew P51 Mustangs. The author has a lot to say about the negative history of Tommy McGuire and attempts to distance himself from that and be objective. Unfortunately Charles Martin is never-the-less writing about a home town hero and it shows. The truth can hurt but not therefore to be suppressed; heroes mostly have feet of clay somewhere and here the first half is painfully boring! McGuire is a unpreposessing personality: liked by some but certainly not liked by others. His tight formation mania for example would horrify other tacticians going back to the Spanish Civil War (or is he badly reported?). However, you can assess him for yourself. The politics of "acedom" come through clearly (and not confined to the Pacific or USAF) but one wonders how many died in the pursuit of the cult of the individual. McGuire's last flight is well discussed but in the end the book makes clear he flew often well beyond structural and flight limitation of the aircraft - and it finally bit him. But then, how correct is the text when the author gives the most appallingly inaccurate discription of a spin in a training aircraft - pure fantasy (I speak as a flying instructor). I have read practically every western fighter pilot's autobiograph/biography written - this is the bottom of the pile. Interesting and that is about all. And appalling quality photos.
Long Overdo Biography Does Justice to Last Great Ace.......2004-06-14
I have been a student of aviation history since my childhood. Major Tom McGuire was one of my boyhood heroes and one of the aces I enjoyed learning about. To my knowledge this is the first biography dedicated to McGuire. Let me say that Mr. Martin has done a terriffic job with his book. It is well documented and paints a wonderful picture of McGuire's rather complex personality.
"Mac" doesn't live up to the cliched image of ace at all. He was no poor child growing up hunting in the hills or in the plains. Rather, he came from a well to do family and was something of a "geek" in school. He didn't play football, he played the clarinet.
Mr. Martin does a good job of presenting his facts and his documentation and he draws conclusions where appropriate. He finally introduces the world to Marilynn, McGuire's wife and the inspiration for his airplanes to be named "PUDGY". For the record, she wasn't. The book goes into some detail explaining the so called "ace race" between McGuire and Bong (it was perhaps a bit overstated) as well as McGuire's last flight (there was a reason to hold onto those drop tanks).
If you have ever had any interest in the life of Tom McGuire let me recommend The Last Great Ace to you. My impression about McGuire personally is that I am not sure I would have been friends with him, but I sure would've wanted him leading me into combat. Enjoy.
Should Be A Movie.......2003-05-04
I am a flier and I find this to be one of the finest books about flying I have ever read. McGuire was a great flier and a daredevil, but also a leader of men. Big surprise: he was raised by his mother and grandmother--no father in the home. He learned much of his leadership skills from ROTC at Ga. Tech. These factors go against some of our commonly held ideas about where heroes come from. This story would make a great movie. I've corresponded with the author and have found that McGuire will soon be the subject of a Legends of Airpower program on PBS.
An Outstanding Book About a True Hero.......2003-01-24
There is only one word to describe this book; TREMENDOUS! Author Charles A. Martin has written a masterpiece of aviation history. In this book, the reader is given insight into the life of Major Thomas B. McGuire, Jr. who would end up as America's number two all-time ace with thirty eight confirmed (and many more unconfirmed) victories. This book does a superior job of giving the reader insight into McGuire's life. The first half of the book deals with McGuire from a young age until he entered flight training. Some of the other reviewers of this book thought that the first half was a waste; I highly disagree. Mr. Martin gives us insight into Tommy's youth and his upbringing, which in the end ultimately resulted in the kind of pilot and leader of men he turned out to be. His upbringing had a major impact on the type of commander he was, and I applaud Mr. Martin for including the early years of McGuire's life. Too often, biographers just concentrate on a specific area of a person's life. I'm glad that I found out what type of person Tommy McGuire was when he was younger. It's easy to see from his childhood how he grew to become such an effective leader.
The second half of the book deals with the actual combat life of Tommy. From August 1943 until his untimely death on January 7, 1945, Major McGuire compiled a record which most fighter pilots only dream about. He shot down thirty eight enemy aircraft; second only to his rival and friend Dick Bong's forty. He also grew to be a highly respected leader, tactician, teacher, and friend. Tommy was a fiery individual in combat, but he was a true friend to his comrades in every sense of the word and he always looked out for the well-being of everyone in his squadron.
I've read dozens of books about the Pacific war, but this book rates as one of my all-time favorites. This is a true classic of aviation history. Read it and discover the life of a true American hero.
One of the Best I Have Ever Read About WWII Fighter Aces!.......2002-06-13
Charles Martin has written the definitive account of the life of Tommy McGuire, one of America's greatest fighter aces. It is fascinating, exciting and instructive. The background information that Martin gives us about McGuire makes us privy to the motivation and inspiration that produced America's finest. I have read most of the books on WWII fighter pilots and find "The Last Great Ace" to be one of the best if not the best.
