A Must Have!!!!!!.......2005-10-21

This book is sort of the "Dummies Guide" to raising llamas. It not only covers common sense but also in depth topics. Before we purchased our llamas we did a lot of research and this is a book that we chose to keep permanently in our library. We are purchasing it for our local public library as a gift to all that may be interested in lloving llamas.

As with all of their books, this one was extremely informative and easy to read.

The Llama Bible.......2005-06-20

We have gone through several copies of this book and require all our 13 and up 4-H kids to read it. Mostly, we use it as a reference manual and augment it with other sources of information from trade magazines and llama vet advice. This is a great book with some solid instructions on how to care for these wonderful animals.

I highly recommend this book to anyone considering llamas. It will provide you with a solid understanding of the needs of the species and the amount of work that will be required to tend to them. Like most things, it is always helpful to get information from more then one source.

Not Suitable for Novices.......2004-12-15

I have had alpacas for over a year now and llamas for a couple of months so while I'm still a novice I do have some experience. I feel this book is not suitable for novices because once you start finding inconsistencies in a book, it's difficult to have faith in the book as a whole.

Fertilizer: "Their communal dung pile makes clean up easier than it is with other livestock". No comment about the fact that not ALL lamas are like that. My boys have several dung piles all over the place.

Buying your first llama: Gale talks about buying "just one llama". While she does mention that they "can generally" be kept with other livestock she doesn't mention that they really do better in the company of their own species.

Horse Trailers: "You can leave llamas in ventilated horse trailers for several days when you are transporting them on a long trip. It is essential to provide fresh feed and water twice a day. You won't need to remove llamas from the trailer to walk them. ... have no problem staying in a kushed position hour upon hour chewing their cud". YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! In the section on fertilizers she talks about how clean they are then she's telling you to leave them laying in their own sh*t! To NOT walk an animal who has been confined to a trailer is cruelty!

Number of animals to a space: "... 8 to 10 llamas in an 8' x 8' stall". Think about it for a minute that's less than 1 sq. ft per animal!

Fencing: One one page she says that 32" - 37.5" is too short then on the very next page she says that "a sheep containment height of 3 feet will be sufficient". 37.5" is too short but 36" is sufficient?

While well intended by a successful breeder, in my opinion, there are too many contradictions to make this book safe for novices.

This is an excellent source of information and I recommend it to anyone who is considering having a llama, and even to the veteran llama owner. This book covers extensive information on care of llamas that is not generally compiled in other places. As a llama breeder, we strongly recommmed this book to all our buyers and suggest that potential new owners read it BEFORE they make a final decision to own llamas. It contains great information in an easy to read format. For new owners, it provides tremendous insight on what to plan for with pasture, fencing, care, behaviors, etc. Note that this book covers many high-level veterinary care points, but is not intended to provide in-depth medical information.

I checked this book out from the library and found it so helpful and interesting that I'll be buying it to have on hand. I don't have llamas yet, but would like to in the future. In the mean time, I'm trying to read and learn as much about it as I can. This book was great for me as a beginner, but complete enough to expand upon if you've had llamas for a while. It covers all the basics of care and breeding as well as a great section on creating a business with your llamas like packing, showing, fertilizer, etc. Gale Birutta is a great author that presents everything in a clear and interesting manner. I loved this book and I recommend it to anyone interested in llamas.

This is one of the few books that addresses how to show, sell, care for and train llamas. It covers more areas of llama ownership than any other book I have read. If you want a llama for a pet, or for more than that, this is a good read.

Revealing the Practical without Being Sidetracked by Gee-Wiz.......2002-09-04

In my college days, I really got into exotic/fun stuff like Fuzzy Logic, Expert Systems, and Case-Based Reasoning. I read lots of books that delved into some author's view of the subtle nuances of some technical refinement or another. I even fancied myself as knowledgeable about Genetic Algorithms and published a research paper on the topic. [Yes, I'm a really exciting guy.] Since then I've come to appreciate that none of these "fancy" methods is perfect and they all have their strengths, weaknesses and best applications. The strength/contribution of "Seven Methods..." is that it rises above the Gee-Wiz details (many of which have come and gone) and instead takes a results oriented approach that summarized where each approach would best succeed in a practical business setting. It has consistently placed in the "top ten" of data-mining reviewers' lists and I think it will continue there for years to come because of this high-level/practical perspective. Each chapter illustrates an alternative data-mining approach using simple/tangible examples. The book ends with seven nontrivial and real world case studies to further illustrate how corporations have come to apply these methods to make (or save) real money.

Do not buy this book.......2002-07-31

This book is not intended for line of business managers that want to really gain insight from data.

It goes into stuff that does not really apply to business needs: brain simulation, neural networks, artificial intelligence. Also, most of the data transformation/usage examples are shallow.

Bringing AI Down to Earth.......2002-02-27

Excelent Book! The book is well writen in real world language (fortunatelly) and is not for researchers, but for IT and business men. Its content is useful since the first page till the last one. As the authors say, they were asked for the need "to bring the technology down to earth without losing its essence". In fact, bringing IT down to earth (or to business environment) is a difficult task in a world full of one-legged professionals with IT expertise OR business expertise (who knows IT expertise AND business expertise in the same person?) "Seven Methods" shows how to build bridges linking academic to IT and business world. Congratulations for the authors for this brilliant work!

Good Intro to AI and Business Application.......2000-12-29

I read this book after I read Data Mining Techniques For Marketing, Sales and Customer Support. There is a significant overlap between the books, but i suppose each one has a slightly different focus.

While Data Mining Techniques focused and covered techniques most relevant for marketing purposes, Seven Methods is more general with enterprise business intelligence in mind. While rule-based systems and fuzzy logic are absent from Data Mining Techniques, Seven Methods is missing market basket and link analysis.

Although Seven Methods is also written for laypersons, you can still sense that authors are of technical background and have interesting stories to tell about details of each algorithm. On the other hand, authors of Data Mining Techiques are of consulting background or practioner of techniques rather than researcher.

I would suggest that, if you are not a core marketer, Seven Methods will better suit your appetite for learning a range of data mining techniques. If you are a marketer, then read Data Mining Techniques.

Right content, right size, simple to undersdand book!.......2000-05-10

If you ever wondered what the field of Artificial Intelligence is and what it is useful for -- this book is for you! The book goes through a series of AI algorithms, such as neural networks and genetic algorithms, and describes in just the right level of detail how they work and where they can be applied. There isn't a single line of code in that book, yet the concepts behind the algorithms are crystal clear. I am a professional software developer and I did not mind this lack of code because the book gave me precisely what I wanted -- conceptual understanding of the issues involved and how applicable they are in the real world. I read the book from the first page to the last. It is only about 200 pages. Every single page seems to carry useful and simple to understand information. The summary table at the end of each chapter makes it easy to compare and contrast the algorithms. The authors seem very knowledgeable, yet they spare the reader the "tech talk". They are also quite realistic about what exactly can and cannot be applicable in business. This book is as much for business people as it is for techies. I would HIGHLY recommend this book!

The book presents an excellent treatment of intelligent systems technology. It provides enough technial details in a non-technical language to help understand the technologies. In addition, the technologies are described within the context of business problems that they can help solve. By providing this very well balanced approach, this book fills an important need.

An excellent book for the business reader interested in intelligent technologies or a technologist interested in business applications. Also, serves well as an excellent textbook.

This is an extremely clear, well written and well organized text on knowledge gathering systems. Written from a business perspective, it never loses sight of important operational and implementation issues applicable to any industry and treats technology as a mechanism, not as a end unto itself. Truly an excellent book.

This book is a collection of papers presented at a conference in Singapore honoring Charles Stein and his interesting probability trick that has found many applications in the asymptotic theory of averages (CLT) and point process limit theorems (Poisson limit) for both independent variables and weakly dependent stochastic processes. Stein's original work was published in the 6th Berkeley Symposium in 1972 and the conference was a celebration of thirty years of research that has shown the method to be surprisingly powerful. The book editors Barbour and Chen are both major contributors to the theory and the articles are expository presentations of results. Chen was a student of Stein's who showed how the method could be used to develop limit theorems and approximations in the case of point process convergence to a Poisson limit. The book is interesting because of its development of an extension of classical probability results to weakly dependent cases. Acolleague of mine was particularly interested in finding a Berry-Esseen bound for a stationary Markov process. I believe that the theorem inone of the papers that uses weak dependence conditions with Stein's method to prove a Berry-Esseen bound. This book will be of interest to probabilists and statisticians who are interested in applying asymptotic theory. However it requires knowledge of probability theory at an advanced level.

Stein's method's not really explained.......2006-08-07

This is a collection of six papers developed as part of a workshop on Stein's method at Stanford in 1998. The preface states "(Charles) Stein's method has emerged as one of the most powerful new tools for proving limit theorems. ... For all these virtues it still seems impossible to give a brief understandable explanation of the essence of Stein's method."
The first paper, by Charles Stein himself, associates exchangeable pairs with Stein's method. But it is not introductory to the method itself.
The second paper, by Persi Diaconis, uses Stein's method to derive convergence rates for some Markov chains. The introduction states "Charles Stein has introduced a general approach to proving approximation theorems in probability theory. The method has been developed and applied for normal and Poisson approximation by Louis Chen, Andrew Barbour, and others. As the applications become more complex and refined, the overall approach fades into the background."
And so it goes. The actual method is not defined in this collection, and the suggestion is that the method is almost undefinable, except perhaps through references to the copious literature and study of the examples in the book. This illustrates an oddity found in numerous (though not all!) monographs that are self-titled to be about some method or research topic but that never actually define the method or research topic. This is unfortunate, since the contributors are world-class experts in Stein's method, yet shrink from actually defining it and properly developing its basics. Consequently, the book has little utility.

This memoir is a record of what Jensen calls the luckiest and greatest adventure of his life. In the midst of the fighting and with the knowledge that each day could be his last, this young marine managed to find some humor in his situation and he believes that is what kept him alive.

The story begins with Jensen as a young man in New York in the 1960s, who, following in his brother's footsteps, decides to join the Marines in hopes of finding himself. Early chapters discuss his experiences in boot camp and his combat training at Camp Lejeune. Subsequent chapters move directly to vivid descriptions of action on the battlefield, Jensen's time aboard the USS Valley Forge, days spent walking through rice paddies and the resulting foot infections he suffered. On the day he arrived home in New York, a cab driver at the airport charged Jensen double the fare to drive him home. He paid it and returned to a delighted family on March 6, 1970.

This is a passage to manhood for an American kid in the ultimate test of himself and why he did it. A remembrance of who fights and dies for your way of life. The strength of this book is after 30 years the author takes you back to the thoughts and sensibilities of a peach-faced high school teenager entering the Marine Corps during the Viet Nam Conflict. From growing up in Queens, NY and training to be a Marine, we follow his deployment to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion 26 Marines, the legendary unit that held Hill 861 in Khe Sahn. This is not a story of Marine Corps Dress Blues or the fiction of Recruiting Posters or Officers strategy and tactics. Recommended reading if you want to know the truth of how it really was in VN. Ron Jensen does a terrific job of bringing his own experiences to life for the reader.
