Down to the earth gardener.......2006-03-21

This book was a very sweet description of life at a organic farm. It brought to life ideas and processes that must happen every year or helpful hints on what makes this gardening adventure easier. You can feel the joy and effort he has put into the farm and also the challenges. He gives a glimpse of the organic association, and what it means to be organic. Chaskey generously lets us learn from his mistakes. The wholesome roots of farming are embraced by this book, I loved it.

Love and Frustration on an Organic Farm.......2005-06-23

A story of love and frustration in building a farm that grows products organically.

It's clear that the love drives Mr. Chaskey to farming, watching things grow, watching the seasons turn. The poet in him makes his prose read like this love -- 'Last night our fields felt the first light touch of Jack Frost.'

The frustration also comes through, especially as he talks about new gtovernment rules -- To qualify as organic compost must be turned a total of five times within a fifteen-day period and you must prove that the temperature inside the pile was between 131 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit for the period. --Who turns compost every three days.

This book is the story of the changing seasons on an organic farm in New York. It is not an instruction book on farming, it is an ode to organic farming.

This text is perfect for the reader who can read graphs and diagrams. A picture is worth a thousand words and so are graphs and diagrams. When a user issues a reasonable query to a retrieval system and obtains no relevant documents, he or she is bound to feel frustrated. We call these weak queries and retrievals. Improving their effectiveness is an important issue for ad hoc retrieval and would be most rewarding for these users. We explain why data fusion of sufficiently dissimilar retrieval lists can improve weak query results and confirm this with experiments using short and medium size queries. To realize sufficiently dissimilar retrieval lists, we propose composing alternate queries through web search and mining, employ them for target retrieval, and combine with the original query retrieval list. Methods of forming web probes from longer queries, including salient term selection and query text window rotation, are investigated. When compared with normal ad hoc retrieval, web assistance and data fusion can more than double the original weak query effectiveness. Other queries can also improve along with weak ones.

Very captivating, very interesting, very confusing.......2003-02-05

This book is a great concept and very interesting but at times, very confusing. There were no explanations for different people mentioned in the book (even after reading the book from cover to cover I still am confused about a couple of names mentioned). Also, there is a lot of "lingo" used that if you were never in the Army or closely related you would have no idea. A lot of abbreviations were used with no explanations (I have no idea what a O.D. uniform is). Like I said at the beginning -- this concept was great, the letters were great, the book was put together without any history about the nurse, her family, friends, and no explanation on lingo or abbreviations. I am done reading this book and cannot really connect with the people or things because I have no idea what they are talking about. Frustrating!!

I purchased this book as a gift for my husband (also a retired Army Nurse). I found myself at home one day, picked it up and read non-stop for over eight hours, finishing the book the follwoing morning. Not being an avid WWII reader myself, I was amazed I found it quite interesting to have a look first hand at the life of an Army Nurse, the sacrifices made by her for her country, her sense of selflessness, friendships made and lost, dedication to colleagues and family despite the many obtstacles faced with basic daily living, the Army way. This is truly a fascinating read. You feel as though Lt. Coressel is a personal friend -- the kind everyone wants and hopes to be!

The letters presented in this book offer a unique look at the day to day life of an Army nurse during WWII. Jerry's sense of adventure, dedication to her profession and her country,and the love for her family are expressed in detailed, heartfelt letters.
I highly recommend this special book. It is a loving tribute to the women who devoted a large part of their lives to the war effort.
