      Book Description

From strategy formulation to change implementation, management decides what will be done, how it will be done, who will do it, and what the ultimate outcome should be. Unfortunately, this is not a precise, predictable process. Every day, organizations fail because they selected the wrong people, the wrong market, the wrong equipment, the wrong product or service, or the wrong process. The process of choosing one strategic or operational alternative over another may be the difference between success and failure.

Although we can not achieve certainty in this decision-making process, we can reduce the degree of uncertainty by developing and following a consistent framework for analyzing the organizational process to maximize our chance of making the best decisions.

This book uses a time-tested, step-by-step, practical framework for identifying and assessing organizational issues and for choosing optimum solutions. It is written in an easy, readable style, and uses real world case studies from the authors own consulting experiences to explain the assessment and intervention process.

        Book Description

Millions go hungry every year in both poor and rich nations, yet hundreds of thousands of peasants and farmers continue to be pushed off the land. Applied in increasing volumes, chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers deplete the soil, pollute our food and water, and leave crops more vulnerable to pest outbreaks. The new and expanding use of genetically engineered seeds threatens species diversity.

This penetrating set of essays explains why corporate agribusiness is a rising threat to farmers, the environment, and consumers. Ranging in subject from the politics of hunger to the new agricultural biotechnologies, and in time and place from early modern Europe to contemporary Cuba, the contributions to Hungry for Profit examine the changes underway in world agriculture today and point the way toward organic, sustainable solutions to problems of food supply.

"A beautifully illustrated history of the ways people in various cultures have explained the aurora."
        Chicago Tribune

Even those who have not had the privilege of seeing auroras know that there is something magical about them. But few of us understand why or how they occur. What brings the night sky to life with these curtains of light? What makes them dance and swirl? Where do they come from, and what do they mean?

Since ancient times, people have pondered these questions. Could the polar lights be invoked as healing spirits for shamans? Could they rescue souls from death? Were they visions from God - a divine warning that foretold calamity and bloodshed on earth? Throughout the ages, the sheer magnificence and eerie grandeur of the aurora have evoked both fear and wonder.

As beguiling as the auroral legends are, however, the scientific explanation for the lights is no less awe-inspiring. In clear, intelligent text accompanied by dozens of archival illustrations, diagrams, and color photographs, Candace Savage explores the myth and science behind the aurora. She reveals the surprisingly common threads in the auroral traditions of distant cultures and follows the long, colorful and sometimes fractious path that led scientists to the contemporary theory about the lights.

Savage cuts through the morass of geophysical data and mathematical formulae to give us a lucid and fascinating account of how the lights happen. The modern explanation, only serves to increase our sense of awe and mystery about a phenomenon that is our link to vast, uncontrollable, and unseen forces that shape the universe.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A historical and scientific look at the Aurora.......2000-10-07

Ms Savage does a very credible job of introducing the Aurora Borealis to the average person. The book begins with historical interest in the aurora and how different peoples view the lights and works its way up to the modern day physics of the lights. Interspersed throughout the book are wonderful photos of the lights and pithy quotes. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys the aurora and wants to know more about it. The one short coming of the book was the tendancy of Ms. Savage to be a little long winded at times. Shorter explanations and more pictures would have really made this book perfect. As it stands, however, the book is well worth the purchase price, if only to adorn your coffee table.

                Book Description

This book presents a new method of asymptotic analysis of boundary-layer problems, the Successive Complementary Expansion Method (SCEM). The first part is devoted to a general comprehensive presentation of the tools of asymptotic analysis. It gives the keys to understand a boundary-layer problem and explains the methods to construct an approximation. The second part is devoted to SCEM and its applications in fluid mechanics, including external and internal flows. The advantages of SCEM are discussed in comparison with the standard Method of Matched Asymptotic Expansions. In particular, for the first time, the theory of Interactive Boundary Layer is fully justified.

With its chapter summaries, detailed derivations of results, discussed examples and fully worked out problems and solutions, the book is self-contained. It is written on a mathematical level accessible to graduate and post-graduate students of engineering and physics with a good knowledge in fluid mechanics. Researchers and practitioners will esteem it as a valuable monograph in their field of work. "Asymptotic Analysis and Boundary Layers" is an extended English edition of "Analyse asymptotique et couche limite" published in the Springer series Mathématiques et Applications.

                  Product Description

Asymptotic methods provide considerable physical insight and understanding of diffraction mechanisms and are very useful in the design of electromagnetic devices such as radar targets and antennas. However, difficulties can arise when trying to solve problems using multipole and asymoptotic methods together, such as in radar cross section objects. This new book offers a solution to this problem by combining these approaches into hybrid methods, therefore creating high demand for both understanding and learning how to apply asymptotic and hybrid methods to solve diffraction problems. The book provides the very latest and most comprehensive research on this subject.

                          Book Description

The collection consists of four papers in different areas of mathematical physics united by the intrinsic coherence of the asymptotic methods used. The papers describe both the known results and most recent achievements, as well as new concepts and ideas in mathematical analysis of quantum and wave problems.

In the introductory paper "Quantization and Intrinsic Dynamics" a relationship between quantization of symplectic manifolds and nonlinear wave equations is described and discussed from the viewpoint of the weak asymptotics method (asymptotics in distributions) and the semiclassical approximation method. It also explains a hidden dynamic geometry that arises when using these methods.

Three other papers discuss applications of asymptotic methods to the construction of wave-type solutions of nonlinear PDE's, to the theory of semiclassical approximation (in particular, the Whitham method) for nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations, and to the study of the Schrödinger type equations whose potential wells are sufficiently shallow that the discrete spectrum contains precisely one point.

All the papers contain detailed references and are oriented not only to specialists in asymptotic methods but also to a wider audience of researchers and graduate students working in partial differential equations and mathematical physics.

                            Book Description

Numerically rigorous techniques for the computation of electromagnetic fields diffracted by an object become computationally intensive, if not impractical to handle, at high frequencies and one must resort to asymptotic methods to solve the scattering problem at short wavelengths. The asymptotic methods provide closed form expansions for the diffracted fields and are also useful for eliciting physical interpretations of the various diffraction phenomena. One of the principal objectives of this book is to discuss the different asymptotic methods in a unified manner. Although the book contains explicit formulas for computing the field diffracted by conducting or dielectric-coated objects, it also provides the mathematical foundations of the different methods and explains how they are interrelated.

                                  Book Description

This book describes some general properties of wave functions, with an emphasis on their asymptotic behaviour. The asymptotic region is particularly important since it is the wave function in the outer region of an atom, a molecule or a nucleus, which is sensitive to external interaction. An analysis of these properties helps in constructing simple and compact wave functions and in developing a broad understanding of different aspects of the quantum mechanics of many-particle systems. As applications, wave functions with correct asymptotic forms are used to generate a large data base for susceptibilities, polarizabilities, interatomic potentials, and nuclear densities.

I found my gg grandfather listed in this book with a physical description of him. I was so surprised! This is a companion book to "Immortal 600" book. I treasure these books! I recommend the books to anyone interested in the Civil War and this event that took place by the Federal Army.

This books features brief biographical details of the 600 Confederate Officers who made up "The Immortal 600". Some gentlemen has more details listed than some. Name, birth, residence before and after the war, wife's name, enlistment place, regiment name, promotion dates, the name of place or battle where captured, the various prisons where imprisioned with dates, physical description of the officer, the date of their release from prison, the date of when they took the oath of allegiance, professions before and after war, amount of children, city name that death occured and the name of the cemetery. NOTE...Not all officers will have all this detail. However, a good percentage does.

                                    Book Description

Written from the perspective of the joy of celebrating life rather than lamenting the scourge of chronic illness, this collection of medical columns, short stories, and letters recounts the wonderful and upbeat tale of coping, surviving, and prevailing. Starting out as a medical technician, wife, and mother faced with progressive loss of sight and ambulation, Barry Friedman devised strategies for using her intellect to benefit other patients and medical professionals. Free from self pity and permeated by hope, enthusiasm, and the belief that there was much to be accomplished, Friedman proved to be a keen observer of the sense and nonsense comprising her therapeutic regimen for diabetes, Addison's disease, and renal failure. Especially helpful are Friedman's hints for dealing with the necessity of diet and time change during travel and activity while under treatment with insulin. Reading these short stories reveals a sense of humor and a glint of impish satisfaction in just being alive.
