3 out of 5 stars Avian Medicine: Abridged Version.......2007-01-09

If you can afford it, buy the unabridged copy. It's worth the money and is easier to handle than this softcovered version. The size of this abridged edition is awkward and, of course, cannot lay flat. In a pinch, however, have this on hand should you have the need to treat your own birds before you can get to your avian vet.

5 out of 5 stars G reat for the breeders of birds........1998-11-25

If you are a breeder you will know what I mean when I say that there are not alot of vets that are experienced with the hadeling of birds. I was able to save many of my birds with the use of this as a reference. It is a great reference manual.

5 out of 5 stars As a breeder of cockatiels this book has been indespencible!.......1998-07-22

I've had this book for 4 years, and each time I read it I'm still constantly learning.

As a breeder my main reference points in the book has been: Neonatology in regards to my 'tiel babies. Supportive care and Emergency treatments have saved so many of my tiels when I couldn't get to my vet. Antimicrobial Theapy has made me better understand the cause/effect of the drugs given to the birds, and Formulary as to the dosages. These are only a few of my favorite chapters. I've added my own handwriten notes to pages Such as: Pg. 762 covers a prolapsed oviduct and cloaca. It mentions treatments to reduce the swelling of the expoesed tissue. I had none of the listed items. At midnight I'm faced with a hen with a prolapsed uterus. Over the phone my vet suggested coating the exposed tissue with sugar, leave on for 15 min.,rinse off with warm running water, then gently insert the tissues back into the cloaca. IT WORKED! So, these notes are handwritten on the page in regar! ds to additional emergency treatments. The book is 1384 page, which is a wealth of information. But it is too much information to constantly go through when an emergency occurs. I've highlighted the key points in each section, which has saved me a lot of searching through paragraphs for what I need. I reccomend this book to all whom are concerned with the care and health of their birds. *NOTE* Please don't use it as a replacement in using a vet, but as a survival guide as to when an emergency comes up and you just can't get to your vet. Use the book as a learning tool. You and your birds will benefit greatly from it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for every bird owner.......1998-03-05

We purchased this book in 1994 when it was released and have used it numerous times for reference. Most recently when a pet bird had a stroke. I highly recommend this book

          Book Description

The Practical Guide to Lightcurve Photometry and Analysis provides those with access to even a modest telescope and a CCD camera the background and detailed steps to take part in important astronomical research. Readers learn about the joint projects in which they can take part, as well as the techniques of gathering, analyzing, and then publishing their data. The primary market for this book is amateur astronomers, but undergraduate students will also find its easy going friendly style ideal for help with their studies in this subject. There is of course more to lightcurve photometry than simply taking pictures. For the results to be of value, the data must be gathered and processed in certain ways so that it is both meaningful and can be used by others for analysis. The book contains enough background material (theory) for the reader to understand – and avoid – the pitfalls in the process. More important, there are detailed examples provided for hpw to obtain data and, for many, the more exciting and rewarding effort of analyzing the data to determine various properties of the object being studied. Under "choosing the right software," the author looks critically at the commercially-available packages, providing screen shots and useful advice. Amateur astronomers who wants to go beyond mere imaging with a CCD camera will find everything ithat they need in the book to take a step into ‘real’ science.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent publication.......2007-02-07

Can highly recommend this book. Has all the needed elements for getting started with photometry. In combination with the MPO software for photometry and telescope/camera control this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Photometry.......2006-12-04

This is a great book for the amateur astronomer who wishes to learn about photometry. It is well within the grasp of undergraduates and motivated high school astronomers. Warner's writing style is engaging and clear. The chapters are a step-by-step trip from an overview of how photometry is used in astronomy to the basics of photometry to publishing your results. Beginning variable star observers will find a wealth of excellent information. Those interested in asteroid lightcurves will find all the essentials. Warner shows how to analyze the data using standard tools such as spreadsheets. But, once you get serious, you should really consider obtaining Warner's Canopus program which is mentioned in the text.

4 out of 5 stars quick intro to photometry.......2006-08-11

The book is all about combining a little optical telescope and a CCD camera to good effect. Plus a personal computer. Warner teaches the basics of photometry, without you needing a university lab. These days, the materials required for the book should be readily affordable to many readers, especially if they are already amateur astronomers.

Key concepts like air mass, and the signal to noise ratio and colour indices are used in a straightforward manner. Which greatly helps you learning these ideas.

The book is a little short, however. The lessons are in the first two thirds. While the last third of the book is various appendices.

5 out of 5 stars Astronomical Photometry, Text and Handbook for the Advanced.......2004-03-19

This book is very well written and informative. It is easy to understand for everyone, whether you are interested in photometric work, or astronomy in general. I have read numerous books written on photometry/astronomy and most are not very detailed, nor provide practical information and have excessive amount of math and formulas that would only appeal to a mathematics professor. If you want to build an effective photometer for a small or large telescope, this is the book to buy.

This book seems to be written for advanced amateurs with a quite professional equipment. It's also a good starting for the young astronomer.

            Book Description

Small and large telescopes are being installed all around the world. Astronomers have thus acquired better access to more modern equipment; not in the least to photometers, which are very important tools for the contemporary observer. This development of higher quality and more sensitive equipment makes it very necessary to improve the accuracy of the measurements. This guide helps the astronomer and astronomy student to improve the quality of their photometric measurements and to extract a maximum of information from their observations.
The book is based on the authors' observing experience, spending numerious nights behind various instruments at many different observatories.

                  Book Description

Astronomical photographs contain an enormous amount of information. This presents extremely interesting problems when one wishes to produce digitised sky atlases, to archive the digitised material, to develop sophisticated devices to do the digitising, and to create software to procecc the vast amounts of data. All these activities are necessary to be able to do astronomy.
One such activity is the important, large-scale optical identification of objects which also emit radiation at other wavelengths. Other activities of the past decade include a multiplicity of surveys that have been made on galaxies and clusters of galaxies.
This book treats, in five sections, the existing and future surveys, their digitisation and their impact on astronomy. It is a reference for people in the field and for those who wish to engage in using or producing sky surveys.

                          Book Description

Stellar photometry deals with the accurate measurement of light from stars and galaxies. It is one of the principal tools of the astronomer and is used in the determination of the brightness, radius and temperature of stars, and, increasingly, in the study of their atmospheres and interiors. The book contains the proceedings of a colloquium held in Dublin in August 1992 that reviewed the most recent developments in stellar photometry and the many technical problems that face photometrists in their quest for ever more accurate and meaningful data. This book covers the following topics: (1)Photometric systems; including the pros and cons of rival photometric systems and how they are affected by choice of detector and equipment design; (2)High precision photometry; the factors that limit the routine attainment of millimagnitude accuracy both in measurement and conversion to a standard system; (3)New techniques in photometry, using multichannel arrays in the optical and infrared regions; (4)Automatic photoelectric telescopes and the setting up of global networks to provide continuous photometric coverage; (5)Photometry with CCDs, and (6)Photometry from instruments in space or on the Moon.

                            Book Description

This book provides a unified approach for the study of constrained Markov decision processes with a finite state space and unbounded costs. Unlike the single controller case considered in many other books, the author considers a single controller with several objectives, such as minimizing delays and loss, probabilities, and maximization of throughputs. It is desirable to design a controller that minimizes one cost objective, subject to inequality constraints on other cost objectives. This framework describes dynamic decision problems arising frequently in many engineering fields. A thorough overview of these applications is presented in the introduction. The book is then divided into three sections that build upon each other. The first part explains the theory for the finite state space. The author characterizes the set of achievable expected occupation measures as well as performance vectors, and identifies simple classes of policies among which optimal policies exist. This allows the reduction of the original dynamic into a linear program. A Lagranian approach is then used to derive the dual linear program using dynamic programming techniques. In the second part, these results are extended to the infinite state space and action spaces. The author provides two frameworks: the case where costs are bounded below and the contracting framework. The third part builds upon the results of the first two parts and examines asymptotical results of the convergence of both the value and the policies in the time horizon and in the discount factor. Finally, several state truncation algorithms that enable the approximation of the solution of the original control problem via finite linear programs are given.

3 out of 5 stars Specialized Topic, too many typos.......2003-03-10

This is a monograph, not a textbook, and the author says so in the first sentence of the introduction.
Consequently (?) the mathematical sophistication required varies very widely from one page to the next. Also, it makes no attempt to be self contained, but refers freely to other sources.

The topic is quite specialized, but the need to consider it is argued well.

Unfortunately, it does not contain many examples.

Particularly annoying is the almost unconstrained number of typos, one of the worst books I have seen in this respect.

The book is certainly not an introduction to this topic, suitable for self study, but rather a book written by one specialist for other specialists. This I suppose was the author's intention.

In the waning weeks of World War II, a 34-year-old American intelligence officer found himself in Germany. Fluent in German, Yiddish, and French, Frank E. Manuel interrogated captured soldiers, from the grunts to the high commanders. Many broke down immediately:
PFCs and lieutenants and generals who talked and talked and talked, beat their gums until you had to shut them up, wept, whined, and tried to use the interrogation chamber as a confessional box, laying bare their souls to the first sympathetic auditor to whom they could speak without fear of reprisal...
Others were clearly made of sterner stuff, such as a young sergeant who demanded a direct order from a captured field marshal before he would reveal his secret mission.

Manuel blends snatches of interrogations; overheard conversations between German civilians, combatants, and American liberators; and his own observations. The result is choppy and disjointed, with little sense of a narrative. The author argues that this is by design: "Military historians have assembled a picture of the grand design, creating the myth of an official history," he writes, "but fragments may be closer to the chaos of experience in war before it has been subjected to cleansing."

Compiled from notes written immediately after he returned home from the war and letters written to his wife, Scenes from the End is a series of snapshots that, viewed together, provide an accurate picture of the dismal final days of World War II. --Sunny Delaney

                              Book Description

Frank E. Manuel was a 34-year-old intelligence officer during the final American push into Germany in April 1945. This memoir recounts those last frantic weeks of the war, conveying the essence of the time through a montage produced from transcripts, letters, and memory. Manuel's take on the collapse of the Third Reich, and the Americans' part in it, is decidedly unheroic and unsentimental. He portrays a shattered Europe where the black market rules and an entire population is in transit; where former Nazi sympathizers are desperate to cover their tracks; where Americans rush to judgment; and where the prospect of a Russian takeover looms. "Military historians have assembled a picture of the grand design, creating the myth of an official history, but fragments may be closer to the chaos of experience in war." - from the book

I wasn't impressed with this book. I had expected something broader in scope; something more profound. Instead, I found a rambling set of reminiscences. Manuel was an intelligence officer in the XXI Corps during the closing months of the war in Europe. He provides no original insight into combat operations or how they were affected by the intelligence his unit gathered. Rather, he provides a run-on panoply of impressions and anecdotes, almost without stopping for breath, primarily gleaned from his and others' interrogations. While some are interesting, most are uninspired. This is a slim volume (some 130 pages) that becomes tedious and does little to educate the reader about this tumultuous time other than to provide some insight at the individual level into the befuddlement and desperation of Germans, soldiers and civilians alike, as their world crumbled. If your interest in this period is great, then this book is worth a few minutes. Otherwise, you ought to pass it by.

5 out of 5 stars Literate Description of end of War........2001-02-23

Scenes From The End by Frank E. Manuel, published by Steerforth Press, 2000.

If you are looking for the usual reminiscences where an old soldier describes his Sherman tank cracking a curbstone in Prague in 1945 and seeing the same crack in 1995, then this book is NOT for you. Manuel's present memoirs, on the end of World War II in Europe, are written in a literate style by a man literate, not only in English, but also in French, German and Yiddish. Frank E. Manuel begins his book with the Battle of the Bulge, but he really does not see much action. The central theme of his book is not, however, about military action, but rather the feelings and motivation of the enemy soldiers he interrogated. The POWs ranged in rank from private to general. Mr. Manuel describes their attitudes and personal attributes when captured. A particularly notable chapter is Chapter 8, entitled, "A Houseful of Generals", where , in a the town of Weilheim, many of the German generals and their staff decided to stop running from the advancing American armies. This chapter is a literate rebuttal of the German offer to become allies with the Anglo-Americans to keep the Mongol-Bolsheviks out of Western Europe. Of course, this offer was rejected, and Frank Manuel states, "We wanted the Germans to say that they were ashamed of themselves", p. 97. His next-to-last chapter is on his encounter with Admiral Horthy, Regent of Hungary, when he and the Admiral are transported to General Patch's headquarters. He describes the Admiral's ineffectual attempts to break with his German allies, as the War comes towards its end. The quote Mr. Manuel uses is, "Was konnte ich denn machen?", in English, "What could I do?" These are the words he also uses to end this chapter.

Throughout this book, Frank Manuel is well aware of his own Jewishness and how others could identify him as being a Jew. The author senses that old Admiral Horthy knew that he was Jewish, and Horthy gave a monologue on "...his protection of Hungarian Jews and his refusal to participate in their round-up by the Nazis". P. 120. The author also relates how Polish officers questioned him, in Yiddish, about being a Jew. But, in all of this, Frank Manuel is not, as far as I can read, defensive about being Jewish. In describing the fate of the Poles, he states that "...they would wander the earth like the Jews and the Irish". P. 71. In this single line, the author shows a deeper understanding of the many diasporas (Irish, Jewish or Polish) than many who believe in a monopoly of persecution, suffered only by their own kind. This book is well worth your time.

In the spring of 1945, Frank Manuel was a 34 year old intelligence officer fluent in French, German, and Yiddish as the American Army pushed into Germany. Scenes From The End: The Last Days Of World War II In Europe begins at about the same time as the Battle of the Bulge, and covers the last few months of combat with the German forces until the surrender of Germany to the Allies. Manuel vividly distills the utter chaos and frequent absurdity of war in its final hour. He is able to provide the reader with a clear and candid sense of what it was like, from anonymous encounters with Holocaust survivors, to the interrogations of captured German soldiers, to an unforgettable car ride with Admiral Horthy, Regent of Hungary, at a time when the Allies had not yet decided wether to regard him as a victim of circumstance or major war criminal. Scenes From The End is a unique and invaluable contribution to the growing body of military memoirs and biographies focused on the World War II European Theater.

I've read hundreds of books about the Second World War and purchased this book assuming I'd learn alot about something my prior readings had missed: what it was like in Germany after the fighting stopped. I was disappointed. The writing was disjointed and confusing. There was no flow to the story. I learned little about that period of time or what it was like to be there. Ultimately, after reading 40 pages and then skimming the next 50 I put the book away. Don't bother buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Manuel's stories about the end of Nazi Germany........2000-05-29

This is a nice individual read about Manuel's recollections of the end of Nazi Germany. Manuel was an intelligence officer for the American forces, and participated in the occupation of Germany. Since he had minimal combat experience, most of his recollections are about his interrogations of German soldiers and their victims. Some of the writing seems a bit disjointed, but it was a good read. This book is only 120 pages, so if you're looking for something more substancial, don't look here.

In this book Dr. Downing invites us on his journey to provide medical care for those who need it first in Appalachia and then in Africa. He is a careful observer, and a skillful storyteller. Through the stories of memorable people he has encountered, he tells us his own story--how the people he serves, though poor, have much to offer him.
