      KNOTT'S HANDBOOK FOR VEGETABLE GROWERS

      Fourth Edition

This classic handbook is considered by generations of commercial growers as the standard reference tool for growing vegetable crops. Filled with information, largely in the form of tables and charts, from hard statistics on vegetable production and consumption to fascinating esoterica, such as vegetable botanical names and vegetable names in nine languages (French for cauliflower is chou-fleur; a Spanish onion is a cebolla), Knott's Handbook is part Farmer's Almanac, part encyclopedia, and part dictionary. But with its detailed, practical specifics on planting rates, schedules, and spacing; soils and fertilizers; methods for controlling diseases; greenhouse vegetable and crop production; insect pest identification; harvesting and storage; and vegetable marketing, it's an indispensable helpmate to the farmer in the field and in the marketplace.

Thoroughly updated and expanded to reflect the latest technical advances in vegetable growing, the Fourth Edition contains new information on water management with drip irrigation; seed priming and seed germination tests; plant tissue testing; petiole sap testing; windbreaks; and weed management. A revised discussion of allowable pesticide and herbicide use as well as the newest in worker protection standards makes the Fourth Edition even more relevant to today's commercial grower.

The new edition of Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers comes in a convenient portable size and features a sturdy flexible cover with pages that lie flat, on the desk or in the field. Fulfilling James Edward Knott's original vision of a concise, comprehensive, and eminently useable handbook, this new edition of the 1957 classic is the ultimate day-to-day field reference, and as indispensable to a farmer's work as good weather.

5 out of 5 stars Be an Expert Farmer with one book.......2007-06-09

Some years ago I used this book to build a very large farming company. I had no experience and little money but in 5 years I was farming 6000 acres of row crop. This book is fantastic. Eventually I had lots of AG engineers on staff, but this was the book that taught me how to monitor them. I recommend it to anyone, from a gardener to a an agribusinessman. It is wonderful and the current edition is great.

      5 out of 5 stars Knott's handbook review.......2005-10-19

Very comprehensive but somewhat esoteric. This handbook is not for casual reading, but yields results for specific research. The more the book is consulted, one has a better understanding of how the information is presented. The handbook contains a wealth of material.

      5 out of 5 stars Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers, 4th Edition.......2005-08-11

I give it five stars. This book, which contains a variety of information from a wide number of sources, is not a "how-to" book. Its information is mostly in table form, so the book's main use is as a reference. Some chapters, such as the one on water and irrigation, contain information I've never seen anywhere else, except in technical publications. The chapter contains line illustrations and descriptions that are accessible to the layman. The chapter on vegetable pests also contains (black and white) line illustrations of the insects. Rather than try to list all the information this book contains, I list the table of contents:

      5 out of 5 stars A helpful reference tool.......1999-09-23

First published in 1956, this handbook is an indispensable, up-to-date companion both in the field and in the marketplace. Topics include the vegetable industry, greenhouse vegetable production, soils and fertilizers, water, pests, weed control, harvesting, storage, and seed production. Packed with quick-access graphs, tables, charts, and line drawings, the 4th edition offers new information on drip irrigation, seed germination, plant tissue and sap testing, windbreaks, and weed management. It also gives advice on allowable pesticide and herbicide use and on the latest worker protection standards. The appendix contains sources of vegetable information, providers of vegetable seeds, periodicals for vegetable growers, and U.S. units of measurement and the metric conversion factors. A change from the spiral-bound 3rd edition is a sturdy, flexible cover to help hold pages flat.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference work to answer disease&insect problems.......1999-08-24

I use this book as my first reference work to answer disease and insect problems in vegetables for the public. The layout is extremely easy to use. Each section is very clear and concise. This work is also used for establishing small plot research design that is comprable to the large scale production fields. All the information one needs is in this handbook for vegtable trials and for large scale production. There is very little else on the market that is as comprehensive as this publication and as accurate regarding information provided.

        Book Description

Kaboom! About 4.6 billion years ago, a swirling gas cloud comprised of carbon dust, hydrogen, helium, water and ice collapsed under its own gravity, creating an enormous explosion the — a big bang, so to speak. As it contracted, the solar system we know today began to take shape. In The Solar System, readers journey back billions of years, to witness the birth of the planets, stars, and more. This insightful book features the following.

        • The celestial bodies that make up our fascinating solar system are explored with a team of scientists and experts .

        • This book offers provocative research of the nine major planets, their largest moons, famous comets and asteroids, and illuminates the amazing details of their creation, development and discovery.

        • Unique spreads contain detailed descriptions, important data tables, intriguing graphics and lavish artworks of the planets, moons and other key celestial bodies.

        • Interesting speculation is discussed about the possibility one day — perhaps in the year 2515 — of people inhabiting the moon.

        • Fascinating information and more than 500 spectacular color illustrations and photographs add to this insightful book.

          Book Description

This volume gives an integrated summary of the science related to the four giant planets in our solar system. It is the result of an ISSI workshop on "A comparative study of the outer planets before the exploration of Saturn by Cassini-Huygens" which was held at ISSI in Bern on January 12-16, 2004. Representatives of several scientific communities, such as planetary scientists, astronomers, space physicists, chemists and astrobiologists have met with the aim to review the knowledge on four major themes: (1) the study of the formation and evolution processes of the outer planets and their satellites, beginning with the formation of compounds and planetesimals in the solar nebula, and the subsequent evolution of the interiors of the outer planets, (2) a comparative study of the atmospheres of the outer planets and Titan, (3) the study of the planetary magnetospheres and their interactions with the solar wind, and (4) the formation and properties of satellites and rings, including their interiors, surfaces, and their interaction with the solar wind and the magnetospheres of the outer planets. Beyond these topics, the implications for the prebiotic chemical evolution on Europa and Titan are reviewed.

The volume is intended to provide active researchers in the fields of planetary and solar system science, space plasma physics, and astrobiology with an up-to-date status report on the topic, and also to serve graduate students with introductory material into the field. At the time of publication of this book, the study of the outer planets is particularly motivated by the fact that the Saturn system is being investigated by the Cassini-Huygens mission.

                      Book Description

This book provides problems, with answers and tutorial guidance, on the organic chemistry encountered by students in their last year of A-level and at the beginning of undergraduate courses in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The layout of the book runs parallel with that of the successful Foundations of Organic Chemistry by the same authors. The first three chapters cover basic physical organic chemistry, setting the scene for the mechanistic organic chemistry covered later. The problems are accompanied by useful hints, and the answers with tutorial comments which reinforce the chemical principles involved.

                        Book Description

In this tract, Professor Moreno develops the theory of algebraic curves over finite fields, their zeta and L-functions, and, for the first time, the theory of algebraic geometric Goppa codes on algebraic curves. Among the applications considered are: the problem of counting the number of solutions of equations over finite fields; Bombieri's proof of the Reimann hypothesis for function fields, with consequences for the estimation of exponential sums in one variable; Goppa's theory of error-correcting codes constructed from linear systems on algebraic curves; there is also a new proof of the TsfasmanSHVladutSHZink theorem. The prerequisites needed to follow this book are few, and it can be used for graduate courses for mathematics students. Electrical engineers who need to understand the modern developments in the theory of error-correcting codes will also benefit from studying this work.

                        Hi,

I tried to read this book as I wanted to understand Bombieri's
proof of Weil's Theorem (Reimann hypothesis for function fields over
                        finite field)
For me this this book was very hard to read- I spent alot of time trying to
understand the first chapter-and did not get far.
The book is far from self contained and contains some errors
I think that this is far from inevitable- as there
are books who explain Bombieri's proof- the new vesion of
Schmidt's book equations over finite fields, and I think Stichentoff's
book algberaic function fields and codes- that are much more
                        accesible

Maybe this book has advantages that I currently cannot
appreciate- but If you're in a situation like mine-someone
that has undergraduate and partial graduate knowledge of
math , and you want to understand Bombieri's proof
and some concepts from function fields and algebraic geometry
                        - I recommend you look elsewhere

This is really two booklets put together, one for mathematicians and one for computer scientists or electrical engineers, with the more accessible one put second. Throughout, the method is very algebraic, as opposed to geometrical. The author explains that he wants to require as little geometry as possible. And this book assumes you have your own motivation for the material. So it gives few examples or explanations until after the theorems are proved. Probably the best source for introductory examples and geometric motivation for Zeta functions on finite fields is chapters 7, 10, and 11 of Ireland and Rosen's CLASSICAL INTRODUCTION TO MODERN NUMBER THEORY.

Moreno's chapters 1-4 aim at math grad students. Chapters 1-3 prove the Riemann-Roch theorem for curves on finite fields, and then use it to give Bombieri's proof of the Riemann Hypothesis for those curves. The treatment is on the level of Hartshorne's ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY and often refers to that book for an alternative account. But Moreno's book is just on dimension one, and only over finite fields. So he proves the Riemann Hypothesis for this case by page 69, while Hartshorne gives the proof as an exercise on page 368. Ireland and Rosen prove only some special cases, notably the case of elliptic curves on their page 302.

Chapter 4 continues the first three, with a very long and attractive discussion of L functions and exponential sums on these curves, with applications in number theory. I have not learned this material yet but I'll tell you this is the most encouraging treatment of it I have seen.

Chapter 5, which is over one third of the book, does not assume the earlier chapters. It aims at computer scientists interested in the theoretical limits on efficiency of Goppa codes and practical ways to approach those limits. Here are much more elementary explanations of the methods used in earlier chapters. It explains the "birational" viewpoint where a curve is studied by way of the field of rational functions on it, and in fact that field takes on a life of its own. The original curve is forgotten and "points" are defined to be "discrete valuation rings" of any function field. Moreno explains how, in clear cases, these correspond to the points of geometrical curves. But, as a key example, "points" at infinity are automatically included on this approach, even if you do not include them in the geometric curves. He explains what the Riemann-Roch theorem actually says about curves. This chapter does not give complete proofs, and indeed it cites other books for the proof of at least one theorem that was already proved in chapter 1.

You can learn a lot from this book but you'll have to dig for it.

                          Book Description

In 1945, an American G.I. mailed home a Japanese flag. Fifty years later, his daughter unfolded the past. Growing up, Louise Steinman knew little about her father's experiences in World War II. All she knew was that the whistling teakettle was banned from the kitchen and that she was never to cry in front of him. Years later, after her parents' death, she found an old ammunition box, filled with nearly five hundred letters her father had written to her mother during the War. She also found a silk Japanese flag inscribed to Yoshio Shimizu. Who was Yoshio Shimizu and why did her father have his flag? So began Steinman's quest to return this "souvenir" to its owner, and in the process, to learn more about the war that transformed the expressive young man in those letters into the reserved father she had known.

Weaving together her father's raw, poignant letters with her own journey, Steinman presents a powerful view of how war changed one generation and shaped another.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Moving Memoir.......2007-06-30

Louise Steinman has hit it out of the park with this wonderful, moving memoir about her father, Norman Steinman, his war experiences, and the way those experiences shaped his life--and his relationships with his family. It is also about Ms. Steinman's own odyssey in experiencing her father's war, through reading hundreds of her father's war-time letters discovered after her parents' deaths, talking to other Pacific War veterans, and visiting long-forgotten battlefields in the Philippines. Ms. Steinman eventually makes a special journey to Japan to visit the family of a long-dead Japanese soldier. It involves a simple errand: she needs to give something back...

Ms. Steinman shows that the scars of war run deep and the impacts are felt through succeeding generations. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT READ AND A WORK VERY WELL DONE!.......2007-06-06

Like so many in my generation, the author, like the rest of us, really had no clue as to what made her father tick. These men, and women, of the "Greatest Generation" were a different breed. I had to blink twice when the author described her father, his attitudes, work ethic, treatment of his family and on and on. She could have well been describing my own father.

The author, after her father's death, discovers a box of letters written to his wife (the author's mother) during the war. Her father fought in the Pacific, taking part in some of its most brutal of battles. Amongst the letters, in an envelope, was a Japanese Flag, a "souvenir flag" which her father had sent home. The flag was of the type carried by many Japanese soldiers, which was a sort of good luck piece. The story is basically Ms. Steinman's search for the family of the soldier whose body it was taken from and a story of Ms. Steinman's search for her father, i.e. who really was her father, and how had the war changed him?

Now I will be honest, there were parts of the book that disturbed me. I am not all that certain if the author ever did have a clue as to what made her father the man he was and how the war truly affected him. The author never actually says it, but after reading her description of her father, which gave us some idea of the kind of man he was, there is really no doubt where he got the flag, and how he got it. He did not seem the type of man who would simply pick up a flag off any old dead body and keep it. While this falls into the realm of speculation, I think it probably would have been better if the author had faced reality. Be that as it may, the author did quite a good job with her research and I certainly admire her objectives.

The book is well written, easy to read, and quite informative. Like another reviewer here, I have the feeling the author actually found out more about herself than she did of her father, and that is actually a very good thing. I do recommend this one highly. You certainly will be richer for having read it.

A page turner, I could hardly put it down. Moving and poignant. Through reading about "the war" of the author's father, I learned a lot about my own father and "his war". He too faught with the 25th Division at Balete Pass in 1945, earning a combat intantryman badge and purple heart. He has rarely spoke of his experience and after reading this book, I better understand why. The Souvenir is a must read for anyone whose father fought in "The Pacific War". Thank you Ms. Steinman, The Souvenir is truly a gift.

I have just finished reading Ms. Steinman's THE SOUVENIR, and through her skill and persuasion, her souvenir has now become "my" souvenir too. I find myself thinking about her journey as a daughter as well as the unspeakable journeys our fathers, brothers, and sons (now daughters too) have made in times of war.

5 out of 5 stars If You Believe in it, You Win.......2005-08-08

Louise Steinman weaves war, family and an unsolved mystery into a fine story about how a daughter trys to uncover the meaning of the deep, inconsolable silence her father brings home from one the worst battles of World War II: MacArthur's famous "return" to Luzon, the Philippines.

She retraces history with the help of more than 700 letters her father wrote to her mother during his time away, and with her friends, family and a handful of old infantry vets she is able to puzzle together what was the most momentous time in her father's life. Her journey forges a new understanding of her father and, most importantly, her relationship to him, even many years after his death.

The story tantalizes with descriptions of jungle warfare, imperialism and young men in the throes of battle, especially from the vantage point of Japan, where like their American counterparts, families were torn asunder by the conflict. They too carry the remnants of pain and sorrow sixty years later. Here, at least, Steinman could have spent more time illustrating the cultural differences-and similarities-that propel leaders and their societies to sacrifice their young men for nationalistic fervor.

In the end, the tale reveals just as much about the author as it does about her father. The care, grace and sensitivity with which she tells her story reflects the same qualities her father had, then lost, then struggled to regain after he returned home from 165 consecutive days of brutal warfare.

                          Book Description

Staying Alive is the beautifully wrought memoir of three generations of family life, beginning in depression-era Paterson, New Jersey, where the three Smith sisters-Janet Reibstein's mother and two aunts-and their close-knit extended, Jewish family settle in the New World. Over fifty years, we see Janet's relatives grow into the professionally successful, ethnically mixed family typical in America today. What makes it atypical is the specter of breast cancer that hangs like a dark cloud over all the women in the family. It claims her two aunts first, then her mother, then a cousin. Finally Janet faces a far-reaching decision: to break the pattern and undergo a preemptive mastectomy.

This family portrait is also a palimpsest of the history of the disease. We see how support systems and awareness have grown over the years and how advances in research give women fighting breast cancer a higher survival rate and more humane treatments than the dark years of the Smith girls' early struggles.

Staying Alive is at once heartbreaking and heartwarming, a brilliant rendering of the emotional and psychological shadows cast on both the afflicted and the family members who support them. It is a story of sisters, of mothers and daughters, and also the men who loved them. In the end we are inspired by the extraordinary strength of these women, by their will to fight the disease, and the power of love in survival.

This family memory of overcoming sickness recounts the experiences of the author, who decided to undergo radical surgery in an effort to prevent the cancer diagnosis and death which had plagued women of her family for decades. Their terrible legacy and suffering caused the author to make a painful decision which would change her life. Staying Alive is revealing and engrossing.

Once upon a time there were three beautiful sisters: that's how fairy stories ae supposed to begin. And that is how in the real world the story of life in America did begin, for the daughters of one Jewish-American family, Mary, Fannie and Regina. But there was a secret darkening the future that awaited these sisters, a secret that had followed them from Europe and from the past. It is the gradual unfolding of this secret, that Janet Reibstein, the daughter of Regina, tracks as finally it comes to play out in her own generation too.

Looking back with the intensity of a child's vision, she recreates a world, so that we too relish its fabrics, its colours and textures. She makes the pleasure in clothes and dress that the sisters shared live again for us to share. And she also invites us to share her own journey within that family, as one by one her aunts and even her own mother arre diagnosed with the same illness, breast cancer. But instead of a story of doom, Staying Alive is a story of survival, of proactive, intelligent struggle.

You can read this book with pleasure as a family memoir exploring the generations in an American immigrant family. But what makes it truly compelling is the insight it offers into the relationship between mother and daughter, between Regina and Janet, both clearly extraordinary women but like so many mothers and daughters often painfully at odds. The sensitivity with which Reibstein reconstructs her mother's inner life using her last journals bears witness though to the strength of the bond between them.

Regina is the last of the sisters to be diagnosed; time and methods of treatment have moved on and these allow her to live to the age of sixty-four. How Janet herself copes as a grown woman with the threat posed by her genetic inheritance is the thread which carries the story into the present. Her own struggle against fear and her determination to obtain the very best advice concerning the treatment of breast cancer make this a book to put into the hands of any woman who ;has been diagnosed or who lives in fear of such a diagnosis.

I learned a lot from this book, not least about mothers and daughters-and I loved the clothes.

Beautifully written book about the struggles of a family with a history of cancer. It was informative, heartwarming and at the same time heartbreaking to read about the three sisters and how they struggled and lost their fight against Cancer. The book told how much courage Janet's Mother (Regina) and her two sisters Fannie and Mary had in their battle. I learned how much medical procedures have advanced since the depression-era. It is also a compelling story of how Janet Reibstein (the author) took a pro-active role in beating the cancer for herself. I would highly recommend this book to anyone facing this challenge and their families as well. It also describes how it affects the whole family and how they cope with all of these emotions.

                          5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2002-10-29

I'm in awe of the strength that the author possessed to take on such a decision as well as the strength that her mother had during her battle with cancer. I'm sure this book will have an impact on everyone who reads it.

5 out of 5 stars Moving, inspiring memoir about breast-cancer family.......2002-10-17

A moving, inter-generational memoir, also, an inspiring book that will help to empower women to take charge of their destiny. A portrait of several generations of a family whose lives are full of so much--joy, at times, distress, at other times and, much of the time--the anxiety that accompanies the ever-present threat of breast cancer which threatens many members of this family. How they handle it, how healthcare evolves through the generations, and, in particular, how the author triumphs over it makes riveting, important reading.
