    Book Description

Good Wood is a clear-eyed, finely hewed collection of personal essays on farming, forestry, and family in the Pacific Northwest. As a young man, Steve Radosevich learned to prune trees by watching his grandfather. Working in the apple orchards of the struggling family farm, he saw that "every cut was a decision, conscious and deliberate, about the health of the trees and their coming crops." In Good Wood, Radosevich examines the choices we make in life and how those choices affect the health of people and places.

Radosevich draws on his experiences on two farms-the "homeplace," a family farm in Washington's Yakima Valley, and Kla-kla-nee, his small vineyard in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Radosevich is also a professor of forestry, and his commitment to sustainable forestry informs his writings. His book seamlessly combines recollections of tending smudge pots on freezing spring nights east of the Cascades with discussions about the flooding of Native fishing grounds at Celilo Falls and clearcuts in the Oregon Coast Range. "All these losses," writes Radosevich, "have been decisions too, made consciously I think, but with less deliberation than the forethought of a farmer pruning his orchard."

As keeper of the old family orchard and tender of a new family farm, Radosevich reveals in these stories his deliberate choices and his hopes for the world of his children and grandchildren.

      Book Description

This book is about using an 80mm refractor / 90mm Maksutov (such as a Helios 80 or Meade ETX90) as more than a "quick look" instrument, but rather something capable of use as an introduction to scientific observations. Emphasis is on measurement and discovery activities rather than on casual observing. There are two objectives to these activities: to re-enact the process of discovery and to provide amateur observers with the knowledge and skill that will help them make genuine contributions to the field of astronomy.

It is often said that users of small telescopes can conduct worthwhile scientific work, but ‘how’ is seldom explained except in the context of observations carried out by the most advanced amateur astronomers. This book provides the necessary introduction – derived from the author’s many year of experience in teaching the subject – that will be the starting point for serious work.

Users will find many activities and projects suitable for an 80mm refractor or 90mm reflector or Maksutov that have not been published elsewhere.

        Book Description

There are two basic methods of recording astronomical images seen through the eyepiece of a telescope. Photography (these days, usually digital imaging with a CCD camera) is one, the other is sketching.

Astronomical sketching and drawing has a long and esteemed history. Many astronomers believe it is still unrivalled for recording and illustrating transient phenomena (such as TLPs) or for taking advantage of the fleeting moments of extreme clarity that result from the turbulent atmosphere through which Earth-based astronomers carry out all their observing.

Unfortunately, astronomical sketching and drawing is seldom taught as such, and is regarded by many amateur astronomers as the province of a talented few. This is not the case – the necessary techniques can be taught, just as portraiture and still-life drawing can be (and is) taught.

This book could become a classic.

        Book Description

This second - completely revised - edition of Chris Kitchin's easy-to-read book provides a carefully structured introduction to the tools of astronomy. Beginning with an in-depth look at astronomical telescopes, it progresses through a coverage of positions and motions of astronomical objects, to observing instruments and techniques. New to this edition are sections on modern small telescopes and their design, revised material on the computer processing of data, and extended appendices. Like the first edition, questions (with answers) are given so that students and enthusiastic amateur astronomers can check their progress.

2 out of 5 stars Little value for money--not recommended.......2003-06-30

This book leaves much to be desired of it as far as content is concerned. Although all basic--and not so basic--aspects of introductory astronomy are covered here, this is done in an extremely superficial way. Every topic is only touched upon, in most cases, in a couple of pages maximum, giving only a bird's eye view them. The most deficient parts are those dealing with actual observing, about which the author gives very little information. The book is adorned with numerous illustrations, but lacking in text.

James Muirden's "How to Use an Astronomical Telescope" has done a much better job in this respect. Full explanations of where to look and what to find in the sky are given, including full chapters about the sun, the moon, the planets (one by one), comets, and deep sky objects such as galaxies, star clusters, nebulas, etc. Kitchin has done none of this.

But back to "Telescopes and Techniques". One particularly annoying feature of this book is how the editor of this collection has decided to present the text on the pages. Why, oh why, I kept asking myself, should the space of one thrid of each page be left as blank left margin? Longer lines will certainly not harm the reading, but on the contrary will make the reader feel that they have a serious book in their hands, rather than a children's story.

Finally, one must also wonder what justifies the high price of this book. Perhaps, I keep telling myself, it is the high-quality, glossy paper on which it is printed. For the rest, I cannot see any reason why anyone interested in more than just a very superficial introduction to astronomy should by this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to the field.......1997-05-15

This book is a very good introductory book. It has all you need to know about the history and practical aspects of astronomy. The technical explanations of optics get a bit detailed (i.e., into the math) at times, but are written in such a way that the principles are understood, even if the math isn't. Very good use of photos and illustrations. The author explains well, and doesn't inundate you in details you don't need

          Book Description

Astrophysics is a subject that is often - with some justification - regarded as extremely difficult, requiring at least degree-level mathematics as a prerequisite to its understanding. Consequently, many amateur astronomers just don't bother, and miss out on the fascinating fundamentals of the subject, and often on an understanding of exactly what they are observing.

Mike Inglis' quantitative approach to astrophysics cuts through all the incomprehensible mathematics, and explains all aspects of astrophysics in simple terms.

A unique feature of this book is the way that example objects for practical observation are given at every stage, so that practical astronomers can go and look at the objected or objects under discussion, using only commercial amateur equipment.

                        Book Description

Smart Material Structures addresses modeling parameter estimation and control in smart material systems. This has applications in structural systems, structural acoustics, fluid/structure interactions, vibration absorbers in machine, helicopter rotor design, and many other areas. This monograph discusses implementation and experimental changes with rigorous mathematical presentation. The authors provide a mathematical frame to be used when designing controllers, focusing on systems in which structural vibrations or interactions with adjacent fields are controlled using surface-mounted Piezoceramic actuators and sensors are correct in detail.

                        Book Description

With intimidating tales of bellowing drill instructors and their seemingly incongruous tasks, Reluctant Lieutenant captures the essence of what it meant to survive the training regimen of the Old Army.

Author Jerry Morton is as much at home describing blind navigation through the woods on a dark night as recounting the perils of smuggling a skin flick into his barracks at OCS. In this memoir, Morton reconstructs his reluctant journey through basic training, advanced infantry training, and Infantry Officer Candidate School during the Vietnam era. His is a unique record of what it was like to be a conscript in the U.S. Army in the late 1960s.

Morton's account also provides a roadmap to the sociology and culture of the military, especially the class system that divided college graduates from those with less education or economic stature yet did not override a solidarity in the field. He describes his disappointment and discomfort at being "killed" during training ambushes. But he also shows how someone with a master's degree in psychology could adapt to an environment in which the army did the thinking and the soldier the doing. However unintentional, by the end of his journey Morton was no longer a civilian but an officer, adept at army gamesmanship and ready for command.

This book offers an informative foray into the training system used during the Vietnam era, and veterans of the Old Army will find their memories kindled.

                        4 out of 5 stars Unusual memoir.......2007-04-04

This is a good book for veterans of the 1960s Army, since it's one careful writer's reconstructed memoir of the major events of Basic, Infantry AIT and Infantry OCS. Remember Zero Week? I'd forgotten. Remember the fear of having to repeat Basic? Author Jerry Morton doesn't waste energy finding reasons to hate the Army, and he builds his story with details not generalities. But being a Phd psychologist, he can be pedantic at times. He also seems to run out of gas by the concluding, OCS segment. His Infantry OCS was different from mine, in several respects, but he went through a year earlier, in the first half of 1967, so it might have changed by the time I got to Fort Benning in 1968. Basic and Infantry AIT, which will appeal to the greatest number of Army veterans, get the most careful attention. Morton did them in the fall of 1966 at Fort Dix, NJ, and Ft. McClellan, AL. Even if you weren't there (I did Basic and Cavalry Scout AIT at Fort Knox, KY) his details will spark plenty of memories. He uses pseudonyms and reconstructed (at best) dialogue to keep things moving, and often finds his truths in humor: "We had no idea how far we were going or where we were going. We were just going."

5 out of 5 stars Nice shift in focus.......2005-03-27

Reluctant Lieutenant is not like the usual war memior. Since Morton did not see combat, basic training was the biggest part of his short military career. Others who have seen combat will focus on combat in thier writings. I had the honor of listening to Jerry Morton speak to my class and was in awe of his military intelligence. You notice it too in the book that, eventhough he would not see combat and that he had no interest in the Army before "enlisting," Morton has an acute knowlege of warcraft that makes the reader wonder "would he have been a good combat leader?" I believe so.

5 out of 5 stars True story of one man's experience in the training regiment.......2004-11-12

Reluctant Lieutenant: From Basic To OCS In The Sixties is the true story of one man's experience in the training regiment of the U.S. Army in the late 1960s. Jerry Morton's journey through basic training, advanced infantry training, and Infantry Officer Candidate School during the Vietnam era are all recounted with a natural knack for storytelling, that draws the reader in to the picture of daily life, and the hell that military instructors put their cadets through - in the hope of making them better able to survive the hell that is war. A handful of black-and-white photographs illustrate this candid military memoir.
