Linda lays out the details on building a strategic public relations plan. She candidly tells you what will work and what won't, popping the balloons of those PR practitioners who bilk naive businesses with unfulfillable promises.

Her take on PR dismisses the Press Release Mills and Spin Doctors who damage our discipline and those foolish enough to engage them. She fleshes out some of the concerns I expressed in a Barks & Bites OPED in the Public Relations Journal Bulldog Reporter, entitled "I Want A Divorce." Her take on public relations is right in line with the role I advocate in my book, Play Nice, Make Money.

Linda has obviously been there and done it all. While students and PR professionals can gain much from this book, every business executive can gain a much better understanding of the role PR should play in their organization as well. This book should be required reading in every MBA program and business course as well as every communications course offered.

Shame on you. Do what Linda says. In order to do that you have to buy Linda's book. This is the cheapest graduate level course in modern public relations for the technical enterprise you will ever take. If you don't read and apply the lessons in this book, you will be walking on crutches in your job.

Linda VandeVrede is one of the best solo practitioners of PR for technical companies. I recommend her services regularly and I highly recommend her book.

What is PR? How does one develop a successful PR campaign? Linda VandeVrede's book answers all these questions and more. Her book is concise, interesting, and very easy to read and understand. "Press Releases are not a PR Strategy" walks the reader through the concepts of PR in a very straightforward way. From the entrepreneurial point of view, this book is invaluable! I highly recommend it for early stage startups.

                    I wish I would have read this prior to starting to work for his new company and also I could've used this about 5 years ago to encourage me to change careers. This is an excellent book and I'm using some of the examples in it for my MBA application this fall.

                    As an Executive Coach and a close observer of many corporate cultures it did my poor old tired heart a world of good to read this book. If what Hal Rosenbluth says about his company is even half true, it puts his organization at the forefront of employee value and relationship management. Beyond all that, it makes perfect common sense. Why we would think in our wildest imagination that an employee who does not feel valued by his employer would not transmit that lack of appreciation to his customers, is a mistery to me. The first 100 pages of this book are not be missed by any company who truly wants to improve their workplace culture, increase the productivity of their workforce and cut their turnover rate down dramatically. Read it and implement any one of the outstanding programs explained within and watch s shift in morale and productivity start right away. This book is a keeper and an excellent reference source. I could not recommend it more highly.

                    I am an avid reader of business books, and if I gain just one or two usable ideas from a book, I consider it worth my time. This book is a stand-out among management books, because I got not one or two, but at least a dozen solid ideas I can implement right away. I have shared it with all my top level managers, and have wathced it being shared throughout my multi-national organization. It is a gem, to be kept within reach in one's office -- not with the countless other books that sit, read once, on most managers' bookshelves. I highly recommend it for anyone who cares about the success of their business.

                    I don't think I need to tell any educated person that a review from a disgruntled ex-employee needs to be taken with a grain of salt, if not a whole handful (9/26/02). Rosenbluth is not a perfect company, and Hal never pretends it is but the lifeblood of his company is his belief that every member of the company is a valuable contributor. His book does a great job of conveying that value proposition and how others can make it work.

                    Although many companies preach an employee empowerment model few practice it. That's why Rosenbluth's mascot is the Salmon - we swim upstream.

                      5 out of 5 stars A 20th century Walden, but better........2002-12-17

                      I'll have to confess a bias: I'm one of the author's sons. And the material is so close to me that its power is overwhelming, especially since the book came out only months before Dad died. Nonetheless, anyone I know who's read it feels the pull too. And the inimitable dry humor for which the author was reknowned permeates every chapter... the Editor at Stackpole Books wrote to tell me it had mesmerized everyone from the president to the receptionist.

                      At first glance this might seem to be wholly concerned with trees and plants, intimating that one needs to be a horticulturist to appreciate it. Dead wrong! While there are numerous chapters about plant and animal life, these are not the dry, technical stuff one might suppose...they're infused with an attention to their connects to non-horticultural things, like literature, history, culture and everyday living. There are people too, some of whom might have stepped out of a Dickens novel.

                      It's about the lessons and beauty of rural life -by an Atlantan suburbanite who knew nothing about it when he arrived. You might well consider this a 20th Century WALDEN (which it did not deliberately set out to be), except that this is more immediate and entertaining. Certainly much funnier (echoes of MR BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE) and poignant, especially the final three chapters, where this whole idyllic landscape into which we've been immersed, confronts the gathering storm on the horizon.

                              Victor Hugo christened 1870-71 as the "Terrible Year". During that long year, France experienced the destruction of two armies at Metz and Sedan, the Siege of Paris and the unsucessful attempts to relive the city and finally the bloody Paris Commune.

                              In the years following these disasters the French people tried to put a positive spin on this series of catastrophies. Artists like Detaille and De Nueville painted canvasses of noble soldiers defending the nation. Writers and historians tried to find positive stories and lessons from the Defeat.

                              Leonce Patry's memoirs were written 25 years after the war. His goal was to tell his story with as much honesty and frankness as was possible. His memoirs are a reaction to the false sugar coating that had been taking place during the previous 25 years.

                              Patry began the war as a young naive lieutenant and finished it as battle hardened captain. He led troops in the initial battles of the War. He was trapped during the siege of Metz and was there when Bezaine surrendered. Patry escaped Prussian imprisonment and fled to northern France where he took up arms again with Faidherbe's Army of the North. He endured the final battles of the War and then led his troops against the Paris Communards.

                              If one is looking for a general history of the Franco Prussian War, one should immediately go to Michael Howard's classic study of the war. Patry's well told story is about war as seen by lieutenants and captains. Patry writes well and is very unassuming.

                              Finally, the translator Douglas Fermer has produced a wonderful translation. His foot notes, Forward, bibliography and
                              appendices are simply amazing! This translation was obviously a work of love by a very gifted writer and scholar. This book is a must buy for every serious student of the Franco Prussian War.
