I'd thought I might be able to learn how to trim our own shrubbery after scanning this book. Instead, the book instills an edifying sense of the many ways things can go wrong, yet does not provide sufficient information for someone to take this book into the field and avoid making mistakes. It appears that tree surgeons and other professional groundskeepers can use this guide to value, but it would not provide sufficient information for a newcomer to know what and how to proceed with trimming their bushes.

I was given this book as a gift and found it completely and utterly useless. It's just a book full of words of little instruction. Nothing detailed or specific. No helpfull drawings or pictures. A total disappointment.

I purchased this book to learn about how to prune my fruit trees. While I have an upright peach, this book tells how to train a peach tree as an espalier. Even those directions were not as good as the ones in The Complete Book of Topiary by Barbara Gallup and Deborah Reich. I also have an upright apple tree. He only talks about how to prune a bush apple. I have never heard of a bush apple. The book costs $9.95 and would cost $3.99 plus postage to return.

This book was written by Prof Janusz Pawliszyn of Waterloo University (Toronto, Canada), the maker of SPME, a new solvent-free technique which combine sample preparation and sampling, and is a milestone for new millennium chemistry. Theoretical basis of SPME (thermodynamics and kinetics) are well explained and the steps for the development of method are thoroughly described. The book is complete with application notes about sampling in different matrixes and examples of use of this powerful technique in different fields (clinical, forensic, pharmaceutical), and take a look at future applications (e.g. industrial hygiene, field and biological samples, in-fibre derivatization). A very good book essential for chemists and not only for chemists....strongly recommended!

Martha Byrd was a good historian, and she wrote a good biography of Claire Chennault--leader of the AVG Flying Tigers, commander of the 14th Air Force, and founder of the airline that became the CIA's Air America. Writing about Chennault isn't an easy job (I know, because I wrote a history of the AVG) because he was part genius, part crackpot, and all-over trouble for his superiors. Byrd did a superlative job of sorting myth from fact, and of telling the unvarnished truth about Chennault without ever losing sight of his great humanity and his tactical brilliance. Seek out this book, second-hand or in a library, and hope that it will be republished.

This is a new six-volume set of writings by Nightingale and her contemporaries on nursing and health care in nineteenth-century England. Topics include hospital nursing, district nursing and education, all of which underwent a transformation from the mid-nineteenth century onwards as nursing became professionalized and began to enjoy increased prestige, thanks in large part to the reforming efforts of Florence Nightingale.
Nightingale's thoughts are supplemented by those of Elizabeth Garrett on hospital nursing, J. Clarke Jervoise on infection, Arthur Cotton on conditions in India, and Mrs Dacre Craven and William Rathbone on district nursing. Historically, Nightingale is an important figure in nursing and sanitary reform; she published copiously in these areas, using her own experiences in England and the Crimea as a basis for her critique of medicine and medical care and for her recommendations for improvement; she promoted the professionalization of nursing; she sought to improve the conditions of hospitals by actively promoting principles of sanitation; and she was elevated to the status of national heroine during the Crimean War.
Nightingale was prominent as a critic, commentator and reformer of hospitals and nursing. Her writings address the relevant issues confronted by individuals who sought to elevate nursing to a respected profession, and they offer insight into what was perceived to be a woman's special role in the healing art, the often fraught nature of the nurse's relationship to medicine, and the sanitary conditions in hospitals and homes where people lived, died and nursed the ill. This major set is edited and introduced by Dr Lori Williamson, and will be of interest for academics in the history of medicine, nursing, sanitation, social welfare, and gender studies.
