Community Service for the Corporate World.......1999-08-25

To compete in today's changing business world, corporations are being forced to find ways to adapt and find new ways to reach their customers. "Heroes After Hours" tells of several companies who are meeting this challenge.

"Heroes After Hours" is a wonderful book about corporations working to improve the lives of the greater community. Individuals in several large corporations took it upon themselves to design and implement community service projects, which their corporation later supported and endorsed. The projects and individuals featured were inspirational- the projects went beyond the normal and conventional volunteer projects. The projects are praise-worthy and truly inovative.

As the author demonstrates volunteerism and community service help more than just the recipent. Community service and volunteering improves everyones lives. Reading this book demonstrated that corporate America has the ability to adapt and help others in need.

Evidence that "Earth Angels" are among us in the workplace........1998-07-25

Most people who initiate a volunteer program would agree, it's not for the recognition. Hats off to these authors for bringing to light numerous examples of true "Hero's After Hours." I'm sure the individuals who are featured appreciate the well-deserved recognition.

Written in the late '70s, this book will scare you off the idealistic vision of farming and tune you into some of the economic and other realities. It's dry. It's nuts-and-bolts. It's not groovy. It's about dirt and tractors and seed.

The book attempts to give you a complete how-to, but instead you walk away realizing there is a lot to learn.

The book started off getting me real excited about sustainable farming. I was eager to turn the page and learn more, but as i turned the page, nothing materialized. I learned a lot about soil health and management, but when it got around to details about specific vegetables, growing seasons, and pest prevention, the book was lacking.

Anyone who has ever tried to bring in a crop, will appreciate the down-to-earth basic information provided. The Proton Inventory (PI) method has been applied in the hydrolysis of synthetic substrates by papain, chymopapain and stem bromelain, comparing also their corresponding pH-(k"c"a"t/K"m) profiles, and it was found: (a) k"c"a"t/K"m=k"1, and thus K"S=k"2/k"1 is a dynamic equilibrium constant, (b) bowed-downward PI for k"c"a"t/K"m exhibiting large inverse SIE, and (c) linear PI exhibiting large normal SIE for K"S, k"2 and k"3. A novel finding of this work is that the association of substrates onto all three studied cysteine proteinases proceeds via a stepwise pathway, in contrast to purely concerted pathways found previously for both acylation and deacylation. A hydrogen bond, which seems more likely to be developed across a pK"a-value close to 4.00, connecting D"C"O"O"^"-^1^5^8 and/or N"O"^"@d"^"1^1^5^7, with the positively charged H"N"^"@d"^"1"-"H"^"@d"^"1^1^5^9 and/or H"N"^"@d"^"1"-"H"^"@d"^"1^1^5^8 (papain/chymopapain or bromelain numbering), constitutes another novelty of this work.

Specialized as it might be, continuum theory is one of the most intriguing areas in mathematics. However, despite being popular journal fare, few books have thoroughly explored this interesting aspect of topology. In Topics on Continua, Sergio Macías, one of the field's leading scholars, presents four of his favorite continuum topics: inverse limits, Jones's set function T, homogenous continua, and n-fold hyperspaces, and in doing so, presents the most complete set of theorems and proofs ever contained in a single topology volume. Many of the results presented have previously appeared only in research papers, and some appear here for the first time. After building the requisite background and exploring the inverse limits of continua, the discussions focus on Professor Jones's set function T and continua for which T is continuous. An introduction to topological groups and group actions lead to a proof of Effros's Theorem, followed by a presentation of two decomposition theorems. The author then offers an in-depth study of n-fold hyperspaces. This includes their general properties, conditions that allow points of n-fold symmetric products to be arcwise accessible from their complement, points that arcwise disconnect the n-fold hyperspaces, the n-fold hyperspaces of graphs, and theorems relating n-fold hyperspaces and cones. The concluding chapter presents a series of open questions on each topic discussed in the book. With more than a decade of teaching experience, Macías is able to put forth exceptionally cogent discussions that not only give beginning mathematicians a strong grounding in continuum theory, but also form an authoritative, single-source guide through some of topology's most captivating facets.

Bought this for my husband. (we own a birddog). He is picky about what he reads and he could not put this book down. He felt like you really go to know the pilot. The author who was related and wrote the book did a great job. A must read about a young life. A fraternity brother.

I Flew In A Bird-Dog In Viet Nam.......2006-02-24

As a back seat Air Observer with the 220th RAC out of Phu Bai, I was very interested in this book. It was a great read and a good reminder of what I did in Viet Nam. I am sorry this pilot was killed. I also had a pilot killed flying with me and I did get out of the plane after it crashed. All interested in this kind of reading should read it as soon as possible.

A brave, intimate account.......2000-11-06

I started to read this book on the weekend and found myself unable to put it down. For me reading the story of two lesbians, one with cancer, the other caring for her was extremely powerful. Their honest account of the treatments left me sitting with my mouth open. I was especially interested with Maurs obsession about losing her body hair and her delight when it began to grow back. This books is written as a diary, the style works well and like the back blurb says C-word is 'utterly unputdownable'.

This is a book about the different ways the diagnosis of ovarian cancer affected two active members of the lesbian community in Melbourne in the 1990s. When Maureen O'Connor was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February 1996, she delayed going to hospital so she could appear in the Performing Older Women's Circus production, 'Still Revolting'. The C-Word describes the daily battle Maureen (Maurs) fought over the next two-and-a-half years.

Maurs grew up in a working-class family in Melbourne, worked in the public service, and later became head technician in the Women's Circus.

When her partner, Jean Taylor founded the Performing Women's Circus (POW) in 1995, Maurs moved on-stage and became a clown.
