Customer Reviews:
Great Perspective.......2007-02-07
Mr. Zahn evidently knows what he is talking about. I've used his techniques while in business and have found them very effective. I highly recommend this book.
Finally - a guidebook for the ages...........2004-10-01
It seems like there are literally thousands of books available on how to BE a consultant, but this is the first one I've come across that actually tells someone how to effectively USE a consultant to improve your business - and its about time someone wrote such an essential text.
I have used consultants several times over a twenty year corporate career and have found that their styles, abilities and contributions have varied greatly. But the one thing I was always missing was a guidebook to tell me how to get the most out of the time and money I was investing in these outside service providers. So, when I received this latest book I found myself saying again and again how much I wish I could have had it as a key reference manual during those past engagements with the consulting profession.
David Zahn - who seems to fast becoming the "consultant's consultant" with two books out this year alone - has written an engaging tome that talks about how to direct consultants more effectively, and how to be sure you are getting their best efforts on your behalf. It actually is a very quick and "easy" read, and I found myself smiling as Mr. Zahn recounted anecdotes of his many years as a consultant - and of his many stories of tales from the consultant's perspective.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who uses consultants - or who is contemplating using an outsider to help assist their firm. Mr. Zahn has definitely lifted the curtain about what goes on on the other side of the equation, and his advice and recommendations are worth many times the cost of the book itself.
One of the best business books I've EVER read...and I've read dozens and dozens of them over the years.....

western fertilizer handbook.......2000-04-12
This book is a must for anyone interested in understanding soil and how plants grow. As a UCCE Master Gardener, I have used this as basis for teaching a Nutrient (fertilizer) class to the public. It explains the interrelation of soil type, moisture and the macro- and micronutrients to successfully grow pkants. Even organic growers should know these fundamentals: the plants need the nutrients however they get them.

Book Description
Astronomy is expanding almost as rapidly as the universe itself, and the proliferating scientific jargon can sometimes baffle even the most dedicated amateur. Now, in some 2,400 concise, up-to-date entries, this dictionary cuts a clear path through the maze of complex technical language,
offering full, clear definitions drawn from all aspects of classical and modern astronomy. It has been compiled by Jacqueline Mitton, an officer of the Royal Astronomical Society, who has devoted much of her time in recent years to works which convey the excitement of astronomy to general readers.
Here are the names of planets, moons, asteroids, stars, constellations, and galaxies. Mitton includes the types of stars (Red Giants, Blue Stragglers, Brown Dwarfs), the most common scientific terms used in modern astrophysics and cosmology (for instance, butterfly diagram) as well as relevant
terms from physics and other fields. Entries on telescopes and other measuring devices, observatories, and space missions show how astronomers have explored the universe. The Dictionary also explains abbreviations and acronyms, and it examines a wide range of fascinating phenomena, from blazers and
black holes to runaway stars and the Hawking effect.
From Betelgeuse to the Big Bang, and from spiral galaxies to solar waves, A Concise Dictionary of Astronomy opens a window on the universe for amateur astronomers everywhere.
Book Description
Written in a clear, explanatory style, the new Third Edition of the Concise Science Dictionary contains more than 8,500 entries relating to physics, chemistry, biology (including human biology), the earth sciences, and astronomy, as well as terms that are commonly encountered in mathematics
and computer science. This new edition has been expanded to reflect recent advances molecular biology, genetics and genetic engineering, particle physics, cosmology, fullerene chemistry, immunology, and the techniques and material new to all the sciences. Providing both straightforward definitions
and invaluable background information on a wide range of scientific words, concepts, and topics, the entries also offer line-drawings whenever the meaning is best conveyed by way of a diagram. Charts and tables of essential scientific information are also integrated throughout.
With an extensive cross-referencing system that allows readers to place each entry in a broader scientific context, periodic tables, tables of SI units, and classifications of the plant and animal kingdoms, the Concise Science Dictionary is invaluable for non-specialists and students, and an
essential resource for professionals seeking an accessible guide to all scientific disciplines.
Customer Reviews:
The best choice for those who read a lot of popular science.......2004-08-17
This is a relatively inexpensive, concise, and handy dictionary of science. It is an updated version of the Concise Science Dictionary originally published by the Oxford University Press in 1984. This, the latest edition, is from 1999. It is aimed at professionals and an educated public who want a quick reference to terms in fields other than their own. Unlike science dictionaries found on the reference shelves of libraries, this book is small enough to fit into a knapsack.
As with all specialized dictionaries the task for editors is to decide what to leave in and what to leave out, and how technical to get. The people at Oxford University Press, one of the preeminent publishers of reference books in the world, have tried to eschew "unnecessary scientific jargon" while "always bearing in mind the needs of the readers" (from the Preface). Nonetheless, many of the entries are highly technical, having been written by experts. Clearly the editors have decided to err on the side of technical precision rather than anything resembling a dumbing down. The entry on "optical activity" for example is a mini essay of about 400 words adorned with a drawing of the D-, L-, and meso-forms of the isomers of tartaric acid along with several cross references to related terms in the dictionary. A two-page boxed entry on "El Nino" however is written in language easily accessible to the average high school graduate, as are many other entries including over 160 mini biographies of important scientists.
I also use The American Heritage Dictionary of Science, another handy (as opposed to comprehensive) reference and would like to make a quick comparison. The Heritage dictionary is a hardcover and contains noticeably more entries (16,000+ to perhaps 10,000 to 12,000 for the Oxford). However the Heritage hasn't been updated since the edition of 1988. Of course a lot has happened in science since then, which is why I purchased the Oxford paperback. The Heritage also uses the entries words or phrases in sentences, usually quoting some scientist whereas the Oxford does not bother. The Heritage also gives the pronunciation of most of the entries (e.g., it's "pree'-on," not "pri'-on" for the mad cow infectious agent) whereas the Oxford does not. The Oxford is more technical overall--it is especially strong in physics--and of course more up to date. The entries also tend to be more thorough. For example, the Oxford has a schematic drawing of a mammalian kidney system whereas the Heritage has only text.
There are seven appendices on SI units, fundamental constants, the solar system, the geographical time scale, plant and animal kingdom classifications, and the periodic table. Curiously, nowhere in the Oxford is the abbreviation SI defined or even noted! The Heritage gives it as the French Systeme International d'Unites (or International System of Units). This is actually an indication of how the Oxford assumes a greater scientific sophistication on the part of its readers than does the Heritage.
Bottom line here is that this book is practically a must for those who read a lot of science in fields other than their own. It is better overall than the Heritage because it is eleven years more up to date; and it is a better choice for most people than the more comprehensive hardcover volumes which are significantly more expensive, heavier and take up more space.

Book Description
Perturbation theory, one of the most intriguing and essential topics in mathematics, and its applications to the natural and engineering sciences is the main focus of this workbook. In a systematic introductory manner, this unique book deliniates boundary layer theory for ordinary and partial differential equations, multi-timescale phenomena for nonlinear oscillations, diffusion and nonlinear wave equations. The book provides analysis of simple examples in the context of the general theory, as well as a final discussion of the more advanced problems. Precise estimates and excursions into the theoretical background makes this workbook valuable to both the applied sciences and mathematics fields. As a bonus in its last chapter the book includes a collection of rare and useful pieces of literature, such as the summary of the Perturbation theory of Matrices.
Detailed illustrations, stimulating examples and exercises as well as a clear explanation of the underlying theory makes this workbook ideal for senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students in applied mathematics as well as science and engineering fields.
Book Description
Byron Holley spent the longest year of his young life in Vietnam as a surgeon of the 4th battalion of the 39th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. He lived like a swamp rat in the boonies of the Mekong Delta, and his actions were sometimes all that made the difference between life and death.
“[Holley’s] data base is from the letters he wrote home, so the story is 1969-fresh… It will make you cry, laugh, and rage with anger. It’s a moving, gut-wrenching story that explodes like a hand grenade and holds the reader like a mine field.”
—Col. David H. Hackworth, author of About Face
Customer Reviews:
Poor Baby MD.......2005-02-03
I'm a Vietnam Veteran. The book would be much better if the good doctor didnt whine so much. He's whines about everything. And when he isnt whining he's kissing David Hackworth's butt. I mean, I wanted to cry when the poor-baby doctor was compelled by the evil army to treat grunts rather than continue his medical education in a rear-area hospital. And when Doc Poor-Baby finally became a REMF, he whined about that, too.
Poor-Baby, MD whines about the endless hours of work yet has the time to write long, detailed letters to his girl-friend every day. This makes me suspicious of his veracity.
Officers of every stripe had lives of comparative ease and comfort in Vietnam. And they pulled 6 months in combat zones, not 12 like the grunts.
Great book.......2001-06-06
This book by Dr. Byron E. Holley is a must-read for anyone who is interested in learning about the soldier's personal experiences in Vietnam. His personal accounts of nearly everyday ocourances while on his Tour Of Duty is so insightful. When I read this book it was like being there or being the relative who received the letters home from Vietnam. This book and its account of daily events on Dr. Holley's Tour freezes ones mind in time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
A Book to Remember.......2001-01-24
This awe-inspiring book reminds us of a war that some of us may have forgotten and others would like to. The words that Dr. Holley uses to describe his fears, concerns, and disgust with the war is a chilling reminder to us all. Dr. Holley tells his story in 1968-69 real-time by incorporating letters to his sweetheart and his parents. The book begins with Doc Holley receiving that wonderful letter from Uncle Sam stating that his medical services are needed so that his country may be served, through his one year tour-of-duty including his experiences with Col. Hackworth. You will hear this story from a man, a true man, who has saved countless lives and lives to tell about it. Dr. Holley captures his audience in this must-read for any person that survived his or her worst nightmare. This is simply a must read.

high end recovery.......2002-07-02
Deborah Quinn details a nightmare of personal, financial, legal and medical entanglements. Her story is one relatively few brain injury victims experience. The lifestyle she describes is an exclusive one and the rehabilitation resouces available to her are not generally accessible to any but the very well funded.
She reveals strategies and priorities of the legal and insurance world in an interesting way as well as her means of arriving at decisions during the process.
Many survivors do not reach the level of insurance disputes or legal representation she generated because they are not as lucrative a subject as Ms. Quinn. This does not diminish the anguish she endured, her sense of loss or the difficulty of her journey. That is a part of each person's recovery and no amount of money can spare that.
A must-read for brain injury survivers.......2001-03-24
I am a brain injury surviver just like Deborah is. I was in an automobile accident in January of 1998, but my injuries weren't as bad as Deborah's and my recovery time was much less. I thought the description of the legal battles was too long and boring, but the emotional aspects kept my interest. I sat crying while reading this, remembering my similar experiences and pain. This book is great for anyone who has suffered from a brain injury and also for their family members. I would definitely recommend this!
A Woman's miraculous recovery from head trama........1999-10-30
This young woman's struggle to recover from devastating head injuries is compounded by her problems with the law and lawyers. The way she recovers from both difficult situations is a fabulous read.
Way to go Debbie! I couldn't put it down........1999-10-10
When I first bought this book, I thought I would never be able to finish it until I read the introduction and I couldn't put it down. I passed it on to my sister. Debbie's story is heartbreaking and her recovery miraculas. I can't wait for Ms. Quinn's next book.
This book has helped our family understand my mother........1999-10-09
My mother suffered a brain injury when the family house burned down and my father and brother died. She was left in a coma. We are grateful to still have her but some times it has been hard. this book had helped us understand better. Thanks for your book.
