This book's content is not true to it's title. A small protion of this book is dedicated to history,cultivation, and propagation. The remainder and majority of the book is a list of cultivars. Photographs are few,so even as a cultivar list resource I found this poor. As a grower of boxwood I was disappointed by this book.

Great Math Book!.......2007-09-19

I am a pure math student, so I get easily frustrated with applied math books that offer intuitive proofs instead of the mathematical details. Haberman is a great author, not just in the sense that the book offers an easy and interesting reading, but both intuition and a lot of the technical details are provided for each topic. I can only say this about very few of my applied math books, so I am very happy with my purchase. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants precision and more clarity of thought into the subject.

No worked examples.......2007-04-22

While the presentation of the book was very understandable (especially compared to some other partial differential equation textbooks), there are few worked examples in the book. For those who want worked examples, just type in the google key words "haberman site:.edu". If this book could include some of those worked examples, it would be much better.

The book also uses slightly different notation from that of many other books.

Absolutely no sense.......2005-09-27

I wouldn't listen to the other reviews. Coming from a student who's done very well so far in all his other engineering courses, nothing in this book makes any sense at all. They jump into topics you've never even heard of, and expect you to know everything right off the bat. There aren't many examples, most of it's derivation, and the book takes a tone that you are a genious and will understand everything without a concrete explanation. I wouldn't get this if its not a required text, if I were you.

Smooth transition to advanced topics!.......2005-08-22

Most books on PDEs either address very basic, introductory concepts or tackle advanced topics requiring Measure theory. In addition, they focus mainly on theoretical concepts and do not provide adequate worked examples. Haberman's text is immensely useful both in bridging the gap between elementary and advanced books as well as in providing many, many completely worked problems. Indeed once you have had a basic course in PDEs you could use this text to teach yourself graduate-level topics such as Green's functions.

I do not try to convey the impression that this is a mere cookbook - "here's a problem, let's look up the solution". To the contrary. Haberman provides the motivation for each kind of mathematical treatment and interprets his results, pointing out their important consequences. His presentation of Gibbs' phenomenon is the most clear and comprehensive I have yet come across.

I heartily recommend this book especially to Math and Physics seniors who hope to continue on to graduate school in either of these subjects. In either case, it is expected of you to be adept at Green's functions and Haberman's book lays the groundwork for this topic.

A Good Reference Book, but a poor source for learning.......2006-01-04

I used this textbook for my first course in Differential Equations. The first half of the book, which is geared toward linear and homogeneous ODEs, is written well: the proofs and explanations are clear and concise. The second half, however, is written with the assumption that the student has a background in Fourier Analysis and Linear Algebra. The proofs are verbose and do not connect well with the problem exercises. For a Math major, this book is adequate; for a Physics/Engineering student, it's horrid. There are few examples of physics applications with respect to eigenvalues and matrices.

Okay book written at a low level........2002-07-05

This book is good for a first course in PDE's at the undergradute level. It teaches you very little theory and most of the problems seem to be little more than a slight change in examples. The book seems to be more aimed for engineering majors than math majors. My suggestion is if you need it for a class buy it, if you are looking for a book for reference or to learn PDE's by yourself check out something else.

excellant graduate level work.......2000-11-23

Used as a text in my Boundary Value Problems class at Prairie View A&M University. I found the text very readable and the numerous problems challenging, but not too difficult at all. Powers has written an excellant work for anyone who wishes to learn the heat equation, and wave equation. His worked out answers to selected problems is very helpful for the student. This book is a keeper to be used for reference after the class.

An easy to read thorough treatment on all aspect of DE's..........2000-06-16

I originally purchased this text to help with my study for an undergraduate course in Partial Differential Equations and Waves. From start to finish, this book always presents the material in an easy to read and easy to understand manner.

Generally, the book gives a really good understanding on the topics of solving ordinary differential equations, and then the various types of partial differential equations, such as the heat equation, where the solution methods involved can be confusing at times. The book also has a large selection of worked examples and wide ranging practise problems.

The book has the effect where even if the reader is only armed with basic undergraduate calculus, it gives them a very good understanding of the material in a short time.

Excellent introduction to differential equations.......2007-02-23

This is an excellent introduction to differential equations for both math and physical science majors. It is at the level of most first and second year calculus courses, which is to say focussed on conveying methods rather than dissecting logical structure. I believe this is the extent of the training most physical scientists seek, and is a good place to start for math majors. The exposition is clear and important results are well delineated. Helpful review sections are included for topics the reader may need to brush up on, like linear algebra. The chapters are arranged in a natural progression, moving from lower to higher order DEs and then into systems of DEs. Of course, the other important topics are present too--Laplace transforms, series solutions, phase plane analysis, and basic PDEs. One additional virtue of this book is its utilization of physical problems to motivate the material. I found this appealing, some math majors really do not. Most of the problems have an analagous worked example in the text and don't require great fits of inspiration. That said, one's fortitude will be tested by a Dirichlet boundary value problem in cylindrical coordinates. Overall, I suggest this is the place to start once the basic mechanics of calculus have been learned (though vector calculus is not required). Physical science majors shouldn't have to look beyond this for their ODE needs and third year math majors can learn this in parallel with the fundamentals of analysis.

PS Don't expect to find Fourier transforms here, though there is plenty on Fourier series.

I am midway through our semester and I have to say that so far
I am impressed with this textbook. It is not heavily bogged down in proofs...sorry math majors...but shows you how
to solve the problems in each chapter. I can't really complain but if your a math major who loves proofs, then look elsewhere. If your like me and just want to learn how to solve the problems, this is a good start. I also recommend "Ordinary Differential Equations" by Pollard/Tenenbaum. Good luck.

could be worse.......2003-01-22

Granted, the semester is young, but so far this book's not too bad. Especially considering last semester I had to endure part of the McCallum/Hughes-Hallet series of calculus books for Multivariable/Vector Calculus. In comparison, this book has far more practice problems where you just work out the equations, rather than having to contend with applications and word problems while still wrestling with the concepts. While the examples are a little convoluted, at least they draw parallels to the problems, something the McCallum et al. series does not. In short, this may not be the best math book, but it could be a lot worse.

It appears I'm the only person not from ithaca to review this book. I assume they're using this text at Cornell, or ithaca college, but I used this text at Texas A&M. Perhaps it was the instructor, but i didn't think that this book was that bad. Some of the proofs and explainations and examples were pretty lousy, but the assignment problems were pretty diverse, and i thought most of the explainations and examples were adequate. What i'm trying to say is that this text isn't that bad....

This is the required text for a math class I am currently taking. While the book is not spectacular, it is written at an elementary level and it is not mired in proofs, so one can learn the material simply by opening the book and reading. A definite strength of this book is that it covers a wide range of problems, from ordinary DE's to some PDE's. But it also includes whole chapters on applications to mechanical and electrical systems(circuits), as well as numerical methods and Laplace Transformations. The book is clearly written as an introductory text, but it covers a broad range of material applicable to higher level courses.

As part of the Army of Northern Virginia, the Guards marched under Stonewall Jackson and Jubal Early and fought throughout the war in such battles as Seven Pines, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and finally Petersburg, where all but one of the Guards were captured. While their diaries impart a wealth of information about these and other critical military engagements, they also convey the full range of the wartime experience: from terror to boredom, pride to regret, victory to defeat. About the execution of a deserter, one Greensboro Guard writes, "Sad & heart-sickening scene! I felt the moment after the volley was fired, an indescribable & mixed sensation of sickness & horror at the sight."

Readers will find singular descriptions of the towns and countryside the men saw, of battlefields and camps, of civilians caught in the path of the war. The diarists also commented on such topics as politics, religion, the home front, the presence of slaves alongside the troops, prices and inflation, troop morale, and leisure activities from reading to gambling. Voices from Company D is a companion volume to Guarding Greensboro, also by G. Ward Hubbs. Together the books tell a fascinating story of the Guards and their hometown, from the unit's first muster in the early 1820s through the postwar era.

Fascinating and Unique.......2004-01-27

The editor did a fantastic job of combining these diaries into a chronologically coherent narrative. Additionally he was very wise to preserve the non-standard spellings and minimize annotations. By doing this he preserved the spontaneous quality of the writing.

The writing skills of these diarists is quite surprising. Time and again the reader will come across details and vignettes that are astonishing. In one instance the writer (a private) takes a late night stroll and in the moonlight passes another lone stroller...Robert E. Lee. In another instance a young doctor, fighting as a private, describes his heroic attempts to save his best friend from a protracted illness only to have him die in his arms. It may well be the most poignant thing I have ever read. Other descriptions will create images that will long remain with the reader. From now on when I hear bacon frying I will think of flying miniballs!

This book is unlike anything I have ever read concerning the War Between the States. I highly recommend it.

Positive and inspiring!! The author brings you along with her of how she met Dr.Schweitzer, and how she found herself drawn into working with him at his famous hospital in Lamberene. She has a delightful way of bringing you along with her on her journey, and you discover and learn things just as she did.
The positive spirit that she conveys is truly inspirational.
She will lift you up and help you to feel your own personal idealism. A great book.

A fascinating insight into another world........1998-04-23

The series of episodes recorded by the author gives a fascinating picture of the Africa where Dr. Schweitzer worked, and into the mind of the great humanitarian at the age of 86. I have seldom read anything as interesting and as elevating as this book.
