Cheese Rheology and Texture
Sandaram Gunasekaran , and M. Mehmet Ak Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1587160218 |
Book Description
Cheese Rheology and Texture is the first reference to bring together the essential information on the rheological and textural properties of cheese and state-of-the-art measurement techniques. This comprehensive resource begins with an overview of cheesemaking technology and detailed descriptions of fundamental rheological test methods. Then it presents uniaxial testing and fracture mechanics, the theory and applications of linear viscoelastic methods (dynamic testing), and the nonlinear viscoelasticity of cheeses. The book focuses on mechanics in its examination of cheese texture, while it emphasizes measurement methods in its discussion of cheese meltability and stretchability. Finally it addresses the effects of various factors, such as the properties of milk, cheesemaking procedures, and post-manufacturing processes, on the functional properties of cheese. Summarizing the vast literature available on the subject, Cheese Rheology and Texture helps those in the dairy industry and in academia choose the proper technique to measure properties that directly relate to food applications and ensure that cheese in their formulations will function as intended.

Statistical Challenges in Modern Astronomy
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387979115 |
Book Description
Modern astronomy has been characterized by an enormous growth in data acquisition - from new technologies in telescopes, detectors, and computation. One can now compile catalogs of tens or hundreds of millions of stars or galaxies and databases from satellite-based observations are reaching terabit proportions. This wealth of data gives rise to statistical challenges not previously encountered in astronomy. This book is the result of a workshop held at Pennsylvania State University in August 1991 that brought together leading astronomers and statisticians to consider statistical challenges encountered in modern astronomical research. The chapters have all been thoroughly revised in the light of the discussions at the conference, and some of the lively discussion is recorded here as well.

Statistical Challenges in Modern Astronomy II
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387982035 |
Book Description
Modern astronomical research faces a vast range of statistical issues which have spawned a revival in methodological activity among astronomers. The Statistical Challenges in Modern Astronomy II conference, held in June 1996 at the Pennsylvania State University five years after the first conference, brought astronomers and statisticians together to discuss methodological issues of common interest. Time series analysis, image analysis, Bayesian methods, Poisson processes, nonlinear regression, maximum likelihood, multivariate classification, and wavelet and multiscale analyses were important themes. Astronomers frequently encounter troublesome situations such as heteroscedastic weighting of data, unevenly spaced time series, and selection effects leading to censoring and truncation. Many problems were introduced at the conference in the context of large-scale astronomical projects inlcuding LIGO, AXAF, XTE, Hipparcos, and digitized sky surveys. This volume will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in both fields-astronomers who seek exposure to recent developments in statistics, and statisticians interested in confronting new problems. It is edited by two faculty members of the Pennsylvania State University who have a long-standing cross-disciplinary collaboration and jointly authored the recent introductory monograph "Astrostatics." G.J. Babu is Professor of Statistics, Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Statistical Planning & Inference and the Journal of Nonparametric Statistics. Eric D. Feigelson is Professor of Astronomoy and Astrophysics.

Richard M. Bissel Jr. followed the preferred path to spy superstardom: Groton, Yale, military service in World War II, and a stint helping to write the Marshall Plan, followed by time as an operative and then as an assistant to Allen Dulles, director of the CIA. In 1959, he assumed the reigns as head of the agency's covert operations. But his career ran into a brick wall with the ill-fated Bay of Pigs operation. In Reflections of a Cold Warrior, Bissell, who died in 1994, recounts his involvement in operations ranging from the overthrow of a democratically elected government in Guatemala to the creation of the U-2 spy plane project to the fiasco in Cuba.Book Description
In this revealing memoir, the CIA's most important spymaster provides an insider's view of American intelligence activities during a pivotal period in history. The author tells of the personalities, policies, and historical forces that influenced events while he was in charge of the development of the U-2 spy-plane, the Corona spy satellite, the infamous Bay of Pigs operation, and other covert CIA operations and discusses the lessons that were learned during the Cold War.Customer Reviews:
