A practical guide with an eye toward the future........2000-02-07
The Accounting Software Handbook provides an excellent overview of the state of accounting software today as we move into the Client/Server environment. The book can be read from cover to cover to obtain a basic understanding of the state of the accounting software industry. It also serves as an excellent reference, since the author breaks down the book by chapters such as " Internet Accounting" and " Graphical Accounting", which should be referred back to frequently. Finally, by doing such an excellent job of updating us on the current status of this changing industry, the author provides functional business managers with ideas of how they can use technology to improve their organizations.
The author is an excellent writer whose style is informative for managers, technical people who need a better understanding of business issues, as well as students, salespeople, and others who are trying to develop a basic understanding of the business. I would recommend this book not only to those involved in the software industry, but to anyone studying where business is headed in the future.

Book Description
A unique manual for managers in health care facilities, this volume contains model policies and procedures found through experience to be useful in helping managers manage their work force while at the same time enhancing the employee relations atmosphere. The policies and procedures are designed so that they can be incorporated into company personnel policy manuals as is or modified and adapted to meet the needs of individual organizations. Included are guidelines for promoting fairness and consistency, as well as those aimed at enhancing employee morale and effectiveness. Throughout, the authors have written the manual with a view toward preventing potential legal problems before they begin. The volume begins with a section explaining how to use the various sections of the manual, how to customize where necessary to reflect organizational goals, how to develop an employee handbook, and how to add additional information such as organization history and structure. There follow comprehensive sections that deal with virtually every aspect of employment policies, wages and overtime, benefits policies, the employee and his or her job, employee conduct, and safety and security. Included are policies to deal with such increasingly difficult problems as drugs and alcohol abuse, sexual harassment and discrimination, terminations and layoffs, insurance, and employment of minors as well as basic employment policies ranging from recruitment and hiring to vacations and sick leaves.

Book Description
This amazing little book has launched an industry! Now,in a new edition, it is twice as large as the original with 128 pages. It is completely redesigned with even more illustrations and lots more information about the bees and their propagation in "System" tubes as well as blocks. With answers to all the most frequently asked questions and some obscure ones too, it tells you in easy to read language everything you will need to know about the bee. A must have for all folks interested in raising Mason bees.
Customer Reviews:
Well written. Illustrations could be better........2001-11-29
Given that I haven't actually used the information, and I never intended to even before I bought it, the text seems complete. It manages its completeness without being overly academic. I'd consider it more of a "technical" book rather than an "engineering" book: a brass tacks "how-to" rather than physiology, theory, etc. My biggest "complaint" are the illustrations. They seem to be a bit on the "cutesy" side. Perhaps that was what was intended in order to keep the subject light but I would very much have liked to see some detailed top/front/side views of both the male and the female subject - academic quality. Even jumped on Knox Cellars' website hoping for the diagrams but no such luck. Despite this, keep in mind, I feel this book is more than adequate to get anyone up and running with these little pollinators. The previous review does a sufficient job of summarizing so I won't here.
O what a lovely book!.......2000-02-08
This book tells all about orchard mason bees (and some other native pollinators), what they look like, what they do, why they're particularly good at it, and most of all how we can help.
Orchard mason bees are not honeybees but a small, modest, hard-working, solitary little bee native to the New World. They mind their own business and do a whale of a job pollinating. My blueberry bushes have doubled and tripled their yields since I started putting homes out for the orchard mason bees.
The pictures of the bee-faces in the section on telling the difference between the boy bees and the lady bees are cute. But the text, while not heavy in the least, is serious. Here is a man who believes in his bees and in ways in which we can acknowledge our part in the natural order by helping offset the pernicious effects of excess urbanization. The text is written at the layman's level; no technical knowledge is required to read and understand, but there are references for people who want to get more deeply involved with technical issues.
Here is everything you will need to know to decide whether you would like to harbor orchard mason bees and how to go about it if you do.
I got my first bee block from Knox Farms several years ago and upgraded to a bee condo last year. This year I took my courage in my hands and carefully changed my bee-full nesting tubes for clean ones to wait for spring. It was fascinating handling those tubes stuffed with beneficient bee life! I think this would be a great thing for kids to get involved with. (I'm fourty-something, and I think it's great).
If you are interested in giving a hard-working native bee a hand, and benefitting all of the fruit and berry plants in your neighborhood, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Easy to read but packed with information!

Book Description
In recent years, the blue orchard bee (BOB) has become established as an alternative orchard pollinator in North America. With a strong preference for fruit trees, BOBs are highly efficient pollinators; in fact, just 250-300 females will pollinate an entire acre of apples or almonds. BOBs forage and pollinate under cloudy skies and at lower temperatures than most other bees. They are easy to manage and rarely sting.
To learn how to manage BOBs for successful orchard pollination, consult this guide from the USDA-ARS Bee Biology and Systematics Laboratory. Learn about: BOB natural history

Customer Reviews:
brief, but comprehensive coverage.......2005-08-23
This book is directed at the home gardener or orchardist who is interested in learning about managing native bees on a larger scale, and covers pretty much all the aspects of their cultivation, from tube selection to predators. In between it covers multiple other issues, such as how temperature will affect the maturation predictably, and could be used quite effectively as a "how-to" book for an orchard manager. Although brief and a fairly quick read, it is surprisingly comprehensive, with information into web resources as well.
If you're not sure you even want to start rearing native bees, I'd suggest reading Brian Griffin's book on The Orchard Mason Bee (if you can find a copy), which I think is a much better introduction to the topic. But if you've been "bitten by the bug" already, this book is an excellent manual on the management of a small population of bees into a sustainable larger population for the purposes of pollination on a widely local scale.

Book Description
This textbook for graduate students in observational astronomy, describes the methods used to measure the radiation (mostly in the optical domain) from stars. It starts with an overview, followed by definitions of the main terms encountered in the subject. This is followed by a description of the fundamental physical theory of the measurement of radiative flux. Wide ranging problems in astronomical photometry are then approached. The central chapters deal with photometer design, data handling techniques, and the generation of light curves. Many applications of photometry are then described. Users of this textbook will be able to develop an interest in the practicalities of obtaining data of good quality from photometry. The book will appeal to amateur and professional astronomers engaged in variable star observations and the measurement of stellar luminosity. It is intended to encourage interest in the practicalities of observational astronomy and an understanding of stellar astrophysics from a data-based perspective. It fills a gap between a popular approach and a research monograph.

Customer Reviews:
This is a must-have for anyone interested in astrophotograph.......2000-01-26
Being an amateur astronomer for 50 years, I consider this book required reading for anyone interested in astrophotography. It is written in a way that will not bewilder the beginner and is more than technical enough for the advanced. CCD imagery is a different field and this book does not intend to try to cover that, even if was written more recently. Definitely worth the money. The authors know what they are doing and know how to explain it. In my opinion, a classic.
Authors Writing Style.......1999-11-25
The book is a good starter for real beginners hence its title is apt. The writing style is very dry which is most likely the influence of Dobbins who's articles are generally dry, cynical and sometimes self promoting. Parkers reputation and expertise with planetary imaging certainly gives the book some value. If you're serious about solar system photography, there are many other better resources available though for the absolute beginner it may be worthwhile.
Excellent resource for visual and film work on planets........1999-05-08
This is a first rate book on the practical study of our solar system. It covers telescopes, mountings, filters, cameras, films and other equipment. Information, observing tips and programs, sketches and photographs are presented for the Moon, 8 planets, minor bodies and comets.
The film photography section is the best I've read for work on the Moon and planets at high power in telescopes and meteors and star fields in wide angle camera lenses. Formulae are provided for guess-free calculation of magnification, exposure time and tracking factors. For those that are so inclined, various darkroom techniques are also discussed at great length for developing and processing images.
The only drawback of this book is its date. Recent advances in film and in digital techniques of processing and the use of CCD and video cameras are not covered. But for those who wish to pursue the most accessible methods of observing our solar system, this is the best book around.

Computer Algebra Recipes: An Introductory Guide to the Mathematical Models of Science
ASIN: 0817642919 |
Book Description
Hundreds of novel and innovative computer algebra "recipes" will enable readers starting at the second year undergraduate level to easily and rapidly solve and explore most problems they encounter in their classical mechanics studies. While the aim is not to try and teach the fundamentals of the subject, the recipes are organized to correlate with topics found in standard classical mechanics texts.
Using the powerful computer algebra system MAPLE (Release 8) --- no prior knowledge of MAPLE is presumed --- the relevant command structures are explained on a need-to-know basis as the recipes are developed. This is a self-contained and standalone text, similar only in style and format to
Computer Algebra Recipes: A Gourmet's Guide to the Mathematical Models of Science, ISBN 0-387-95148-2, Springer New York. The computer algebra recipes are introduced in the context of interesting tales, a teaching approach that has been successfully classroom tested by the authors. For the reader's convenience, all recipes have been placed on a Windows Platform CD-ROM that comes with the book; MAC and UNIX systems are also compatible. The CD-ROM also includes computer algebra solutions to hundreds of problems.
This new problem-solving guide can serve in a variety of ways: for use in the classroom or self-study, for reference, or as a text for an on-line course. Science professionals, engineers who need to quickly solve complex classical mechanics problems relevant to their work, and instructors seeking a modern approach to teaching this venerable subject will find this work an invaluable resource.

Book Description
In this innovative analysis of the military and political history of the Philippines, Alfred W. McCoy compares two generations of graduates from the Philippine Military Academy-the classes of 1940 and 1971. Fundamental differences in the academic socialization and ascent to power of the two groups of officers provide important insights into war and peace in the Philippines and in other parts of the world.
Customer Reviews:
A cautionary tale.......2007-09-10
I bought the book because I was researching the acceptance of torture within an organizational or military context, and for that it's very useful -- and extremely well-written. However, as I read McCoy's inspired exploration of military socialization to either support civilian primacy and rule of law (at the cost of the soldiers' lives), or to disdain and despise civilian values and to become the law (at the cost of civilian lives), I was tremendously impressed.
He looks at how brutalization rather than civil socialization turns a military from our protectors to our terrorizers -- starting with harsh, degrading, even lethal hazing of cadets, on to ruthless interrogation of real enemies that creeps and then falls headlong into torture, then extra-legal detentions of civilian dissidents, then the torture and murder of civilians as a means of social repression and control, and with it coup attempts and martial law.
In this process, the military organization ceases to understand and obey the absolute requirement for great self-restraint by those who wield great firepower. It begins to believe its own prideful hype, and particularly in learning the unique potency of torture to destroy human will and rip apart the social fabric, the military begins to feel all-powerful. It no longer pledges allegiance to a nation or to democratic or broad social values, but becomes politicized and dedicated to protect only a few partisan values, or no values other than power and control for their own sake.
Read this book along with Mikey Weinstein's With God On Our Side, Scahill's Blackwater, and Lagouranis' Fear Up Harsh, and tell me you don't break into a cold sweat.
Military in Politics.......2001-01-23
Professor McCoy has made hmself one of the handful of scholars with a deep understanding of fhe forces governing politics in a country of 70 million people who seem much easier to understand than others in Southeast Asia but who are influenced by Malay as well as Spanish and American customs and ideals. Today, as the Phililppine Armed Forces play another decisive role in their nation's history, this analysis is of immediate importance to those seeking to explore the role of armed, trained military leaders in countries whose democracies require support.
Book Cover, "Closer.........Academy".......2000-09-23
I may not be the first person to bring this matter about Mr. Alfred W. McCoy's book, particularly about the book cover. I do not know how authoritative he is about Philippine setting, but the display of the Philippine Flag on the book cover is WRONG. I have not read the book because I just chance upon it when I was browsing for another book. I hope this matter will be brought to the author's attention and that of the publisher as well.
