          Book Description

Despite its many origins in agronomic problems, statistics today is often unrecognizable in this context. Numerous recent methodological approaches and advances originated in other subject-matter areas and agronomists frequently find it difficult to see their immediate relation to questions that their disciplines raise. On the other hand, statisticians often fail to recognize the riches of challenging data analytical problems contemporary plant and soil science provides. The first book to integrate modern statistics with crop, plant and soil science, Contemporary Statistical Models for the Plant and Soil Sciences bridges this gap. The breadth and depth of topics covered is unusual. Each of the main chapters could be a textbook in its own right on a particular class of data structures or models. The cogent presentation in one text allows research workers to apply modern statistical methods that otherwise are scattered across several specialized texts. The combination of theory and application orientation conveys ìwhyî a particular method works and ìhowî it is put in to practice. About the CD-ROM The accompanying CD-ROM is a key component of the book. For each of the main chapters additional sections of text are available that cover mathematical derivations, special topics, and supplementary applications. It supplies the data sets and SAS code for all applications and examples in the text, macros that the author developed, and SAS tutorials ranging from basic data manipulation to advanced programming techniques and publication quality graphics. Contemporary statistical models can not be appreciated to their full potential without a good understanding of theory. They also can not be applied to their full potential without the aid of statistical software. Contemporary Statistical Models for the Plant and Soil Science provides the essential mix of theory and applications of statistical methods pertinent to research in life sciences.

            Book Description

This volume gives a comprehensive and integrated overview of current knowledge and understanding of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) in the solar wind. It is the result of a workshop at ISSI, where space scientists involved in the Ulysses, Pioneer, Voyager, IMP-8, Wind, and SOHO missions exchanged their data and interpretations with theorists in the fields of solar and heliospheric physics.
The book provides a broad synthesis of current understanding of CIRs, which form at the interface between the fast solar wind originating in the northern and southern coronal holes and the slow solar wind that originates near and within coronal streamers surrounding the heliomagnetic equator. CIRs are the dominant structure in the heliosphere near and beyond Earth on the declining phase and near the minimum of the 11-year solar activity cycle. Particles energized at the shocks that bound CIRs at heliospheric distances beyond the orbit of Earth are the dominant energetic particle population observed in the outer heliosphere at these times. Papers included in this volume cover the subject of CIRs from their dissipation in the outer hemisphere, and include discussions of complexities associated with their evolution with distance from the Sun, their three-dimensional structure, and the myriad effects that CIRs have on energetic particles throughout the heliosphere.
The book is intended to provide scientists active in space physics research with an up-to-date status report on current understanding of CIRs and their effects in the heliosphere, and also to serve the advanced graduate student with introductory material on this active field of research.

A new spectrophotometric flow injection method has been established for the determination of some catecholamine drugs (methyl dopa I, dopamine.HCl II and adrenaline III). The method is based on the oxidative coupling reaction of catecholamine with p-toluidine and sodium periodate to form an orange water-soluble dye product that has a maximum absorption at 480nm. Linearity was observed in the range of 1-50, 2-50 and 5-70, with a limit of detection (S/N=3) of 0.4, 0.2 and 0.7@mgml^-^1 for I-III, respectively. The method was applied successfully to the determination of I-III in pharmaceutical preparations with a good precision and accuracy.

                          Description:
The univariate and multivariate calibration methods were applied for the simultaneous determination of iodate and periodate in water. The method is based on the reaction of periodate and iodate with pyrogallol red in sulfuric acid media. The reaction was monitored spectrophotometrically by measuring the decrease in absorbance of pyrogallol red at 470nm. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration ranges of 0.1-12 and 0.1-14@mgml^-^1 for iodate and periodate, respectively. The experimental calibration matrix for partial least squares (PLS) and orthogonal signal correction (OSC-PLS) method was designed with 35 mixtures. The results obtained by the PLS and OSC-PLS were statistically compared. The effects of various cations and anions on iodate and periodate determination have been investigated.

A batch and flow injection analysis (FIA) spectrophotometric methods have been developed for the determination of amoxicillin (AMX) in aqueous solution and in pharmaceutical preparations. The methods are based on the reaction of AMX with N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine in the presence of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) in alkaline medium. The water soluble blue colour product was measured at @l"m"a"x 660nm. Linearity was observed from 20 to 400 and 100 to 700@mg AMX in a final volume of 10ml (i.e. 2-40 and 10-700@mgml^-^1 AMX) with detection limits of 0.637 and 4.90@mgml^-^1 AMX by batch and FIA procedure respectively. The effect of chemical and physical parameters have been carefully considered and the proposed procedures were successfully applied to the determination of AMX in pharmaceutical formulations.

                              Description:
This article describes a straightforward method for the quantification of thiol groups on the surface of chromatographic particles such as 3-mercaptopropyl silica gel. The method is based on a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction with 2,2'-dipyridyl disulfide (DPDS) reagent and spectrophotometric or HPLC-UV determination of the liberated 2-pyridyl thione. Linearity was obtained over the sulfhydryl concentration range of 0.02-0.5@mmolml^-^1 for the spectrophotometric determination and 0.2-5@mmolml^-^1 for the HPLC-UV measurement, with r^2 values of 0.9975 and 0.9981, respectively. The results were validated using elemental analysis as independent control method. The agreement between the results of both methods indicates that the sulfur of the thiol-modified silica particles is available as reactive sulfhydryls. The repeatability study indicated a higher precision for the DPDS method compared to the elemental analysis.

The methods were based on interactions of 4-bromophenyl hydrazine (4-BPH) with N-(1-naphthyl ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NEDA) in the presence of vanadium in acidic medium (acetate buffer of pH 3.0) to give violet colored derivative or on the oxidation of 4-bromophenyl hydrazine by vanadium in basic medium and coupling with chromotropic acid (CA) to yield red color derivative. The violet color derivative having an absorbance maximum at 570nm which is stable for 7 days and the red derivative with @l"m"a"x 495nm for 5 days. Beer's law was obeyed for vanadium in the concentration range of 0.5-6.0@mgml^-^1 (violet derivative) and 0.6-7.0@mgml^-^1 (red derivative), respectively. The optimum reaction conditions and other important analytical parameters were established to enhance the sensitivity of the proposed methods. Interference due to various non-target ions was also investigated. The proposed methods were applied to the analysis of vanadium (V) in environmental, biological, pharmaceutical and steel samples. The performance of proposed methods were evaluated in terms of Student's t-test and Variance ratio F-test that indicates the significance of proposed methods over reported method.

                                      Book Description

This monograph describes new methods for intelligent pattern recognition using soft computing techniques including neural networks, fuzzy logic, and genetic algorithms. Hybrid intelligent systems that combine several soft computing techniques are needed due to the complexity of pattern recognition problems. Hybrid intelligent systems can have different architectures, which have an impact on the efficiency and accuracy of pattern recognition systems, to achieve the ultimate goal of pattern recognition. This book also shows results of the application of hybrid intelligent systems to real-world problems of face, fingerprint, and voice recognition. This monograph is intended to be a major reference for scientists and engineers applying new computational and mathematical tools to intelligent pattern recognition and can be also used as a textbook for graduate courses in soft computing, intelligent pattern recognition, computer vision, or applied artificial intelligence.

                                      Book Description

Dr. Hilary Koprowski is the pioneer of live polio vaccine, the first researcher to advance the diagnostic and therapeutic use of monoclonal antibodies, and the developer of the "gold standard" rabies vaccine. This biography chronicles his distinguished career and life's work in the field of microbiology. A world-reknowned maverick in biomedical research, Koprowski's research methods were often considered controversial and even radical. Nonetheless, he acquired key positions in many research organizations, such as the Rockefeller Foundation, Lederle Labs, and Wistar Institute, initiating landmark studies from cancer research to multiple sclerosis. One of his crowning achievements, the successful crusade for monoclonal antibodies, resulted in his founding of Centocor, a forerunner in the corporate world of biomedicine. This account of Koprowski's life history is a mixture of personal interviews, anecdotes, and legends of the art and science behind the man.

Wonder how medicine comes up with cures for anything, ever? Here are some of the answers! The author makes me wish I could invite Dr. Koprowski for dinner, he is so comfortably described. Not that Dr. Koprowski seems like an altogether comfortable man, you'd have to stay on your toes with him, but what a mind! This is a must-read antidote for Hooper's unsubstantiated theory concerning the origins of AIDS. If you've read The River, you BETTER read this. And it's a whole lot more interesting!
