Book Description
This marvelously evocative book by Stephen Johnson, Gerald Haslam, and Robert Dawson--all natives of the Great Central Valley of California--is the first to explore in detail the rich natural and social history of the state's agricultural heartland.
Gerald Haslam's text celebrates the tenacious people of the Valley, where hard work and ingenuity are the means to both survival and success. This is land that gives little but yields, under pressure, to creative experiments with unusual crops. Stephen Johnson's and Robert Dawson's stunning photographs reveal the immense beauty of the region as well as the delicate relationship between the land and the people who work it.
The Central Valley is California's economic hub as well as its physical center. A plain some 430 miles long and up to 75 miles wide, surrounded by mountains and covering nearly fifteen million acres--about the size of England--this valley has become the richest farming region in the world. More than 25 percent of the table food produced in the U.S. is grown here. Its southernmost county, Kern, produces more oil than some OPEC countries.
The Valley is as rich in people as it is in resources. Tagalog, Hmong, Spanish, English, Cantonese, Russian, Italian--all are spoken here. The population of farm laborers, small family farms, powerful agribusinesses, and, increasingly, urban professionals make the region's economic disparities as palpable as its cultural diversity.
The Valley has also produced a wealth of writers--Maxine Hong Kingston from Stockton, Richard Rodriguez and Joan Didion from Sacramento, Gary Soto from Fresno, among others--as well as the award-winning El Teatro Campesino (The Farmworkers' Theater).
But the Valley is imperiled. The past 150 years of massive agricultural expansion and population growth have systematically destroyed much of the area's original wildlife, and the "plain of majestic oaks" seen by early travelers has vanished. The region is also plagued by a host of critical issues: chemical pollution, soil erosion, water politics, the treatment of minorities, economic inequities, farm foreclosures. Johnson's and Dawson's photographs--which are complemented by engravings by Thomas Moran, paintings by Albert Bierstadt and William Hahn, and photographs by Carleton Watkins, Dorothea Lange, and Russell Lee, among others--bring home to us, as only visual images can, that it is up to us to safeguard the future of this endangered valley, to conserve its extraordinary human and natural wealth, and to try to reclaim some of its lost grandeur.
Customer Reviews:
Historical, not contemporary, material.......2003-04-19
The book contains mostly historical material -- photos and text. I was looking for a book about contemporary Central Valley. A one-page graph shows dollar-value of products and the percentage of U.S. production. One photo, of the planting of asparagus in a dust-storm, shows mostly dust.
Gorgeous and informitive.......2000-03-29
I bought the book mainly to see the work of photographer Stephen Johnson, and his work truly delivered. These pictures are a must study for landscape photographers. His photographs capture a simple beauty and are a heartfelt display of the region. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the work of photographer Robert Dawson, and by the amount of information contained within the pages of "The Great Central Valley". If you enjoy photography or are interested in California history, you will highly enjoy this book.

Book Description
Readers with a penchant for real-life cloak-and-dagger stories won't be disappointed with this memoir. Dan Pinck's adventures behind the lines in war-torn China resulted in some vital information being passed along to the Allies, and his up-close-and-personal look at the world of covert military operations in that country will fascinate many. But the author's engaging writing style and self-deprecating wit do not focus on the heroics typically encountered in spy stories. Pinck ignores the glamour to give a totally candid view of events. Just nineteen years old when he volunteered for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in World War II, he was quickly assigned to a remote area near Hong Kong where he worked with some sixty local agents. The sole American agent in the area, Pinck coordinated the gathering of information about troop movements and shipping along the Japanese-held coast, efforts that resulted in the sinking of several enemy ships. Prior to Japan's surrender he was mapping Japanese coastal emplacements in the area where an American invasion was scheduled.
Pinck credits his survival more to the knowledge of his Chinese colleagues than to his own skills in intelligence operations, and his book keenly illustrates that point when he explains that in serving behind enemy lines, close relationships with the natives often make the difference between success and failure, even life and death. In Peking after the war, he continued to benefit from the friendships he developed with the Chinese, and the last pages of his memoir are filled with insights about U.S.-China relations. Such a vivid, honest, and often humorous account of his exploits as a spy will appeal to a broad audience both as entertainment and as a historical document. 224 pages. 13 photographs. Map. Hardcover. 5 x 8 inches.
Customer Reviews:
lucky.......2005-07-01
I picked up this book at my local library for no particular reason. I'd never read a war memoir before, but I had taught English in China. This was an extremely well written book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in China, WWII, the life of a spy, or a good story.
I came in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
Sharp, tight writing........2005-02-05
I cannot recommend enough Mr. Pinck's tale/memoir. Throughout my reading of this book I was constantly impressed with the clean, understated, wry writing style of Mr. Pinck.
Every bit as engrossing and sincere as WWII memoirs such as Eugene Sledge's "With the Old Breed" (but askew and differing in the experiences retold), Pinck's book offers an endearing and unpretentious yarn set amidst the massive and convoluted backdrop of the China-India-Burma theater. The characters are painfully and believably real, with the story having no patina of time or nostalgic filtration.
Anyone interested in the history of WWII, Asia, US Intelligence Services, or memoirs of colorful distinction will surely enjoy this very readable book by Dan Pinck.
At the risk of sounding crass, this story would make for an excellent film.
A Truely Excellant Spy Story.......2003-06-10
We have all seen the James Bond films with the infamous agent mindlessly trudging around behind enemy lines, wooing women and slaughtering hordes of stereotypical bad guys. Mr. Pinck's novel is an intellectually stimulating story his experiances in wartime China, spent in a mission deep behind enemy lines. Although lacking in some of the glitz and glamour of the Ian Flemming's classic spy novels, his tale is equally intrigueing. With interesting characters such as his witty and cocksure cabbie in Peking to his radio operator's double agent girlfriend, the author, in beautiful prose, weaves and intiguing war story. Despite its lack of "shoot'em up" action, the story wonderfully portrays not only China and the interesting characters Mr. Pinck meets, but the beauty and wonder of this ancient land. The drunkness, sickness and heart break faced in the book are all pulled togather in this wonderful book.
All in all this is a great read that will keep you spell bound to the end. This is truly one of the best cloak and dagger stories I have read in a long while.

The Literary Spy.......2003-05-28
In WWII Dan Pinck journied to China to spy on the Japanese for Wild Bill Donovon's fedgling intelligence agency, then known as the OSS (now better known as the CIA). Mr. Pinck's account of his tour of duty spent in a Christian mission with an eccentric priest, a lovesick radioman and his savvy translator, is both humurous and literary. Through descriptive language and detailed sketches Pinck renders the harsh living conditions and genial, wine loving spirit of the Chinese people. While Pinck may read like Turgenev, one cannot ignore his own distinct style with which he captures the desolation and all too human trepidation of a young spy completely out on his own in a foreign land dealing with Japanese troops, unreliable agents, drunk Chinese generals, coy Chinese girls and by the book superior offiecers. Pinck has given us a true experience which displays the WWII generation's triumphant brand of American spirit, which at once possessed pragmatism, courage, humility and humor. A truly enjoyable read!

Book Description
You've finally pulled the trigger and made the tough decision to homeschool Johnny and Susie. You've looked at it from every angle. You've read dozens of books, gone to a homeschool fair or two, and grilled your homeschooling friends. You've asked yourself if you're crazy. You've no idea where you'll get the time. Nevertheless, deep in your heart, you know it's the right decision.
But that doesn't mean your mother or your best friend will see it that way. They'll be having all the same doubts and questions you had. The difference is they probably aren't going to be able to do all the work you did to find the answers. Here at last is a book that will help them understand why you've decided to homeschool (not to mention confirming to yourself the rightness of your decision). In a delightfully engaging way, it looks at such issues as these: Can your child get a proper education in the public schools? Are public schools safe? How did kids learn 150 years ago, before there were any public schools? It also discusses the rich resources available to homeschoolers; different approaches to learning at home; the law and homeschooling; the Biblical mandate that holds parents responsible for the education of their children; homeschooled kids and socialization; and much more. Perhaps not everyone who reads this book will be convinced that homeschooling is the right thing to do. But at least they'll have a better understanding of why so many parents are choosing this option for their children.
Customer Reviews:
The PERFECT book for skeptical grandparents.......2002-02-10
I adored this book. I bought three of them - one for me, and one each for the grandparents to have. It is written specifically for them, to help them understand homeschooling.
I completely agree with the first reviewer's analysis of the book. It's a must-read for doubting grandparents, husbands and friends - but particularly the grandparents. :)
Another MUST-READ for all homeschoolers (and doubters) is: "Home Schooling: The Right Choice" by Christopher J. Klicka. Awesome book by another Christian author. I was absolutely shocked at what is going on in the public schools today. Klicka doesn't hold back in his analysis. Fabulous book. Both of them.
You're Going to Do What?! or The Little Engine That CAN!.......2001-04-20
Just like that famous childhood story, Laurajean Downs has created a very helpful book that is encouraging, edifying, and a real confidence builder! Reading her book is like sitting down at the kitchen table with an old friend, over a cup of tea, for some sound and wise advice! Home educating is a big decision and one that needs the support of the whole family to be a success. This book is the perfect resource for answering all those questions that might arise, based on your decision, from grandparents and relatives that are from a generation foreign to 'schooling at home.' And the author has covered all the bases for building that new homeschooler up in their decision: the reasons why, socialization, the law, support, teaching style and curriculum, organization at home, and the challenges for the mom/teacher and the family. I truly appreciated the chapter on Homeschooling and the Grandparent Connection/How Can I Help?. What a blessing for a homeschool mom to have supportive parents, who help her reach her goals. These folks will surely reap the rewards of Proverbs 17:6, "children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children." The whole family can only grow stronger and, of course, more educated by following the godly advice of Mrs. Downs. I highly recommend this book to anyone embarking on the homeschool journey!
very good for explaining homeschooling to relatives.......2000-03-25
This is a very good introduction to homeschooling. It does not cover curriculum, planning or schedules. Rather, it attemps to answer basic questions, such as "How can you socialize if you are in homeschool?" It is written with a bent towards convincing the relatives (especially grandparents)of the benefits of homeschooling, rather than answering the questions of the parent (the primary teacher).
I plan on purchasing a few copies of this to pass out to skeptical grandparents.
