Book Description
This easy-to-read introduction to the role of the visual system in the workplace is designed to help many professional ergonomists and human resources professionals to appreciate more fully the relationship between good vision and the efficiency and safety of job performance. It is an accessible account which is illustrated with both low level drawings and technical figures. It also contains up-to-date look-up tables and guidelines and a discussion of related legislation across the international spectrum.; The book begins with a discussion of how the visual system works and an historical perspective of how it has evolved, before moving on to an examination of the specific interaction and functional vision of the eye in the workplace. The role of the VDT monitor is then examined, initially from the viewpoint of its regular interaction with the eye but also in terms of the causes, detection and treatment of VDT-related problems, including computer vision syndrome. Outside the office, a broader perspective of industrial vision is examined, including issues of eye safety and comfort. In the final part of the book a number of areas are discussed in which practical action may be taken to improve conditions for the eye in the workplace. These include environmental, physical and visual factors which can be improved for VDT use and general eye care, many of which are addressed by international standards and legislation.
Book Description
Although food-production systems for the world's rural poor typically have had devastating effects on the planet's wealth of genes, species, and ecosystems, that need not be the case in the future. In Ecoagriculture, two of the world's leading experts on conservation and development examine the idea that agricultural landscapes can be designed more creatively to take the needs of human populations into account while also protecting, or even enhancing, biodiversity. They present a thorough overview of the innovative concept of "ecoagriculture"?the management of landscapes for both the production of food and the conservation of wild biodiversity. The book:
- examines the global impact of agriculture on wild biodiversity
- describes the challenge of reconciling biodiversity conservation and agricultural goals
- outlines and discusses the ecoagriculture approach
- presents diverse case studies that illustrate key strategies
- explores how policies, markets, and institutions can be re-shaped to support ecoagriculture
While focusing on tropical regions of the developing world?where increased agricultural productivity is most vital for food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable development, and where so much of the world's wild biodiversity is threatened?it also draws on lessons learned in developed countries. Dozens of examples from around the world present proven strategies for small-scale, low-income farmers involved in commercial production.
Ecoagriculture explores new approaches to agricultural production that complement natural environments, enhance ecosystem function, and improve rural livelihoods. It features a wealth of real-world case studies that demonstrate the applicability of the ideas discussed and how the principles can be applied, and is an important new work for policymakers, students, researchers, and anyone concerned with conserving biodiversity while sustaining human populations.

Ecological Agriculture: A look inside the alternative.......2005-02-25
Ecoagriculture effectively addresses the ever-demanding needs of the world's population while incorporating strategies to conserve wild biodiversity. McNeely and Scherr assert, "the impressive gains for our species have often come at the expense of other species with whom we share our planet," and therefore, one of their goals tackles the process by which ecological agriculture can not only reverse, but also prevent such negative impacts. The book explores key social and ecological issues by extensively exploring the different approaches to ecological agriculture. Anyone new to the issues could easily become familiar with hot topics in ecoagriculture after reading this book.
McNeely and Scherr describe six strategies for the implementation of ecological agriculture while increasing food production. They divide them into two groups; three of them make space for wildlife within agricultural landscapes while the other three enhance the habitat value of productive areas. These strategies are described with a reasonable amount of detail and are followed by a total of 36 case studies. The strategies that are outlined include:
1. Creating biodiversity reserves that also benefit farming communities
2. Develop habitat networks in non-farmed areas
3. Reduce the conversion of wild lands to agriculture by increasing farm productivity
4. Minimize agricultural pollution
5. Modify the management of soil, water, and vegetation resources, and
6. Modify farming systems to mimic natural ecosystems.
The authors do a good job in providing examples from a variety of locations throughout the developing and developed world.
Despite successfully providing an introduction to the complex subject of ecological agriculture, McNeely and Scherr do a poor job of explaining the cause and effect of their strategies for ecological agriculture nor do they adequately address arguments of its skeptics. One obvious omission is a discussion of genetic modification technology. As well, many of the case studies presented in the book were not explained thoroughly and no negative effects were discussed. Often times the strategies employed in the case studies contradicted each other - for example at once advocating grass-fed livestock and silage-fed livestock. Obviously, there are many trade-offs in a subject as complex as ecoagriculture, but McNeely and Scherr never provide a matrix for evaluating these trade-offs.
The authors finish by laying out policies for implementing their six strategies. However, these suggestions are vague and overly optimistic. McNeely and Scherr's reliance on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to implement their strategies ignores the difficulty of combining these strategies with existing NGO programs. Since the issue of the environment and food security is such a divisive topic, a more pragmatic book would discuss ways of building consensus towards environmentally sustainable agriculture solutions.

Coverage is not standard for a discrete text.......2006-02-25
I teach a discrete mathematics course at the college level and have examined many discrete mathematics books looking for a suitable textbook. Quite frankly, this one is at the bottom of my list of selections as a text. Set theory, logic and functions are not given separate chapters. The book starts with chapters on election theory and fair division, topics that are not generally considered within the venue of discrete mathematics.
The chapters are:
*) Election theory.
*) Fair division.
*) Matrix operations and applications.
*) Graphs and their applications.
*) More graphs, subgraphs and trees.
*) Counting and probability.
*) Matrices revisited.
*) Recursion.
While the material on matrices and graphs is suitable, the emphasis is too great. In my opinion, spending time on the applications in this book is not a suitable use of time. There are so many other, more critical topics that students need to be exposed to.
Good for high school students, but not much else........2003-08-31
Discrete Mathematics Through Applications is a book designed to introduce high school students without much previous mathematical knowledge how to use discrete mathematics in the "real world." Each chapter begins with an activity for student groups to participate in, a few--usually two or three--examples, and a set of exercises to be worked out by the student on their own. The book gradually gets the user used to mathematical notation and inductive thinking and soon it comes instinctively. The chapters are as follows: Election Theory; Fair Division; Matrix Operations and Applications; Graphs and Their Applications; More Graphs, Subgraphs, and Trees; Counting and Probability; Matrices Revisited; and Recursion. Each of those chapters are organized into 5-6 subsections and a review. Among those sections include: graph coloring, euler circuits & paths, markov chains, group-ranking methods, and minimum spanning trees.
The biggest complaint I have about this book is that it weaves around too much. If you are already familiar with a concept or you figure it out half-way through the chapter, too bad! You have to keep reading because all of the exercises are based around the activities at the beginning of the chapter. Sometimes, the exercises even reference previous activities. That can get very frustrating.
I guess the authors' intentions were good, trying to take an activity-based approach to the learning of math, but in the end, it just missed the mark. I am someone who prefers to figure things out, and this book really holds your hand too much. However, if you are not exactly famous for your high notes in math, this book could help immensely.

Book Description
This study of the personality and achievements of Florence Nightingale is based on extensive research and unpublished material. She achieved fame for her leadership of a group of British nurses during the Crimean War, and afterwards she dedicated herself to promoting public health. Following a collapse at age 37, she remained bedridden for more than ten years and became one of history's most famous invalids. Hugh Small has produced a new and startling explanation of Florence Nightingale's actions, comparing the conflicting contemporary accounts of what really happened in her hospital at Scutari during the war and uncovering an official cover-up of a public health disaster for which Nightingale felt personally responsible.

Excellent.......2007-02-13
For the first time a well documented point of view of Florence as a human being, with all its implications.
Re-Inventing the Myth of Florence Nightingale.......2002-09-03
Inmy mind, this Nightingal biography is an extraordinary example of revisionism. Studying the professional career of the English heroine Florence Nightingale is mandatory in just about every accredited school of nursing because, after all, she gave respectability to her profession. Even Nightingale's mother would faint at the thought of her daughter being a "nurse", because respectable ladies in Victorian England just didn't do such things. Thankfully, Florence broke with her culture and created, what some would call, a new paradigm for women. Now, that's the way Florence Nightingale is presented to nursing students, but it's not the way author Hugh Small presents his argument in "Florence Nightingale: Avenging Angel". Well, of course, somebody had to break the myth of Florence Nightingale. As an icon of Victorian culture and style, Nightingale had to be taken down a peg or two. Never mind, the memorial to Nightingale located in the middle of a group of stuffy old coffins in the crypts in London's St. Paul's Cathedral. Never mind, the enormous statue honoring Nightingale and the memorial to the Crimea, nearly causing traffic jams at the intersection where it is boldly located in downtown London. Never mind, the Nightingale Museum and its life sized display of three demensional shadow boxes located adjacent to St. Thomas Hospital in London. If the real Nightingale would please stand up, as Hugh Small describes her in his biography, the lady's myth would be on trail right now for genocide, having caused the deaths of thousands of British soilders in the 1856 Crimean War. The biographer Small, of course, anticipated just such a visceral reaction from Nightingale's cult, mostly nurses like myself, so he floods the book with lengthy documentation and footnotes to counter any dispute about the authenticity of his Nightingale research. In summary, if history addicts want to know about remote letters from people as memorable as Lord Palmerston and details of the NcNeill-Tulloch reports to Parliment about the Nightingale hospital, then, this book is definitely made to order. Of course, it's admirable to have a counter-cultural history published every 100 years or so about our sacred myths and legends. Hugh Small certainly deliveres a counter-cultural point of view, so for this I give him a nod of approval. Nevertheless, I didn't like reading "Avenging Angel", bcause the biographjy, I believe, belies the premise if its cover. Small sets the reader up for one expectation about the heroine Nightingale while actually undermining the reader's trust with absolutely mind startling information. So, I guess somebody had to eventually re-invent Nightingale. Too bad, the story is 150 years after the fact. Perhaps the best part of reading "Florence Nightingale: Avenging Angel" is the reinforcement it provides to holistic healers and health care skeptics who instinctively seem to know that staying away from hospitals is better for your health and life longevity than relying on the curative treatment that may never come. Rating this book was difficult, but for historical data it gets a 5; for story value it gets a 1...."Data 5, Book 1"....so, I think a rating of 2 is fair.
A Thought Provoking Exposition........2000-01-09
Hugh Small's account of Florence Nightingales contribution in the Crimean war has made rivoting reading. His willingness to answer some of the hitherto unasked questions using thorough and reliable research is to be commended. He challenges many of the romantic notions of Florence Nigfhtingale whilst preserving her reputation as a remarkable woman with great political influence.
