Fine Catalog of Stellar Showpieces.......2003-05-30

Mullaney does a fine job of sifting through thousands of deep-sky objects to select those most likely to impress users of small telescopes. His descriptions are enjoyable, if occasionally overly florid, with an annoying overuse of exclamation points. His bias for double stars is evident, but I have no real complaint about that. Doubles are pretty and charming and often underappreciated. Mullaney apparently composed the manuscript using some primitive word-processing software that forced him to include additional objects at the back of the book instead of in the main constellation listings.

Overall, the sincerity of the writing, plus the intelligence of the 300 or so objects selected, makes this perhaps the best available list of objects that goes beyond the Messier catalog (better than the spurious Caldwell list, for example).

The development of polymer composites containing inhibitors of metal corrosion is an important endeavor in modern materials science and technology. Corrosion inhibitors can be located in a polymer matrix in the solid, liquid, or gaseous phase. This book details the thermodynamic principles for selecting these components, their compatibility, and their effectiveness. The various mechanisms of metal protection – barrier, inhibiting and electromechanical – are considered, as are the conflicting requirements placed on the structure of the combined material. Two main classes of inhibited materials (structural and films/coatings) are described in detail. Examples are given of structural plastics used in friction units subjected to mechano-chemical wear and of polymer films/coatings for protecting metal objects against corrosion.

The primary aims of this book are to provide modern statistical techniques and theory for stochastic processes. The stochastic processes mentioned here are not restricted to the usual AR, MA and ARMA processes. A wide variety of stochastic processes, e.g., non-Gaussian linear processes, long-memory processes, nonlinear processes, non-ergodic processes and diffusion processes are described. The authors discuss the usual estimation and testing theory and also many other statistical methods and techniques, e.g., discriminant analysis, nonparametric methods, semiparametric approaches, higher order asymptotic theory in view of differential geometry, large deviation principle and saddlepoint approximation. Because it is difficult to use the exact distribution theory, the discussion is based on the asymptotic theory. The optimality of various procedures is often shown by use of the local asymptotic normality (LAN) which is due to Le Cam. The LAN gives a unified view for the time series asymptotic theory.

Automatic Autocorrelation and Spectral Analysis gives random data a language to communicate the information they contain objectively. In the current practice of spectral analysis, subjective decisions have to be made all of which influence the final spectral estimate and mean that different analysts obtain different results from the same stationary stochastic observations. Statistical signal processing can overcome this difficulty, producing a unique solution for any set of observations but that solution is only acceptable if it is close to the best attainable accuracy for most types of stationary data. Automatic Autocorrelation and Spectral Analysis describes a method which fulfils the near-optimal-solution criterion. It takes advantage of greater computing power and robust algorithms to produce enough models to be sure of providing a suitable candidate for given data. Improved order selection quality guarantees that one of the best (and often the best) will be selected automatically. The data themselves suggest their best representation but should the analyst wish to intervene, alternatives can be provided. Written for graduate signal processing students and for researchers and engineers using time series analysis for practical applications ranging from breakdown prevention in heavy machinery to measuring lung noise for medical diagnosis, this text offers: tuition in how power spectral density and the autocorrelation function of stochastic data can be estimated and interpreted in time series models; extensive support for the MATLAB® ARMAsel toolbox; applications showing the methods in action; appropriate mathematics for students to apply the methods with references for those who wish to develop them further.

Adequate estimation of the energetic improvements which derived from the insertion of phase change materials (PCM) inside light dry assembled walls is an important step in order to quantify the comfort advantages that can derive from the use of such materials. The use of a statistic approach based fundamentally on the time series analysis method may represent a valid information instrument in support of all the technical analysis carried out in order to evaluate the effects of thermal inertia increase on the heat transmission process that occurs between the elements of a building. PCM containing walls, tested at the ''Renewable Energies Outdoor Laboratory'' of the Polytechnic University of Marche during the summer of 2003, present delicate problems relative to the identification of physical models relating to dynamics of heat exchange between building components. The application of a vector auto regressive (VAR) estimation model allows, using high frequency experimental data, obtaining consistent estimates regarding the physical phenomenon of energy exchange which intervene inside buildings-both between the walls, and through the walls-occurring during the observation period. The results of this approach are twofold: firstly, they demonstrate the existence of statistically significant linear dependencies among the variables used, and secondly, they highlight the comfort conditions' improvements due to the insertion of PCM inside dry assembled walls.

This story (with 28 photos) is about my brother Pete and his survival of four Japanese kamikaze crashes while on board the USS Ommaney Bay (CVE-79) and the USS Columbia (CL-56). These two ships encountered countless attacks from the kamikazes. The Ommaney Bay was sunk while the Columbia sustained three hits. After abandoning the Ommaney Bay, Pete rescued ten of his shipmates. The fourth crash(on board the Columbia) seriously wounded Pete. He was pronounced dead twice, unconscious for seven days and hospitalized for twenty-two and half months, undergoing fifty operations during that period. He suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for thirty-two years. For forty-four years, he has contended that the kamikaze pilot was a woman.

Honest, Funny & Encouraging!.......2007-03-18

This book is written from a Christian perspective -- scripture is referenced in context but not thrown in your face -- and is humorous and encouraging to boot! Buchanan makes the point that cancer is as individual as a thumbprint -- everyone has a thumbprint, but each person's is unique in some way. Cancer may "look" the same in different people, but we all have different body chemistires, faith, genes etc. that make it act differently. The reality for a cancer patient is that no one really knows the outcome that any of us will have. I found Buchanan to be wonderful -- she has a sense of humor, faith in God and a dose of good old fashioned common sense. I would highly recommend this book to anyone trying to deal with or understand some of the emotions related to breast cancer. If nothing else, it is a quick, fun read!

Ok but not great.......2001-06-02

I found the overt Christianity in this book a little difficult to get past. I do not believe in a god, and if I haad known about this slant before buying I probably would not have bought it.

I also found Sue Buchanan's adversarial relationship to her doctors and indeed (except at the VERY back of the book) to the medical profession, a little disturbing. She is not required to use any doctor she meets, and if she is going to laugh at them in public and write all over all the tongue-depressors, she should find a new doctor. Yes, it is hard to be kept waiting or to be talked down to by surgeons, but a) the doctor you are waiting for may be coping with another distraught patient, and b) all surgeons I have ever met, while techically skilled, are poor at patient communication. They are skilled,arrogant, decisive, and opinionated -- and that's what I want when I'm in the operating room. But in the office they are abrupt and impatient.

I found it interesting that she had her chemo treatments BEFORE the blood chemistry results came back. They would NEVER do that where my wife has chemo. Accurate reading of blood counts and differentials is key to proper chemo decision-making. Glad she survived.

And by the way, they don't take blood to detect cancer -- cancer cannot be detected in the bloodstream even if it is there because of the very low density of cancer cells compared to blood cells. Detecting cancer in the blood is done by inference only.

She is to be commended on her upbeat approach, but an optimistic attitude, solid family support, and a generous heart are more important than "dissing" the medical profession. Yes, statistics are sometimes grim, but you may always be the 1% who get the good results -- and you may not. Statistics DO help you evaluate procedures and treatments, however.

Despite my defense of the medical profession, I am not a medical person nor are any of my relatives except one nephew who is a vet. We met the medical profession when my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

So while this was a OK read, I found it much less interesting than Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, 3rd edition, which (in its earlier edition) was recommended to my wife at the time of her diagnosis by her surgeon and is very readable and well-organized, and quite upbeat too. I also liked Dr. David Spiegel's Living Beyond Limits. Both were far more valuable and thought-provoking than this book.

NEVER TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER.......1999-11-30

"She will be dead soon." Fifteen years after that awful pronouncement, Sue Buchanan is lecturing, running her successful corporation and reminding all breast cancer patients that we are NOT victims. Stand up for your rights, stand up and do the unexpected, stand up and laugh out loud. Her honest story of her battle with breast cancer and some of the doctors she met along the way is a quick, enjoyable read. Her continued joie de vie and encouragement for all women is delightful. A good book when you are down in the dumps - it's enough to shake you out of the doldrums and into some action!

Best of the bunch...give it to a friend........1999-08-20

I prefer the original title: Love, Laughter and a High Disregard for Statistics. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago, friends and family (with the best intentions) felt compelled to send me books by survivors of the disease. Some of them were interesting, others downright depressing, but this one really lifted my spirits and helped me to cope. Well written -- a fun read -- I still have it and frequently share it with other women as they face the challenges of cancer. Sue Buchanan, you sure made a difference in this woman's life. Mahalo nui loa!
