Agree with previous-- and more........2005-10-19

I agree completely with the previous reviewer, but just wanted to add a couple points.

1. This book has a surprising number of photos of "in flight" planes, including planes belonging to the men being written about. It even has a couple "in flight/in fight" photos. Unusual.

2. The detail on the planes and paint jobs is excellent.

3. It was originally printed by "Champlain Press," connected with a wonderful "Fighter Museum" in Phoenix which went out of business. Their outstanding collection went to the Seattle Museum of Flight. Anyway, first printing is out.
The version shown on Amazon comes from "Flying Machine Press," which has picked up a number of titles to reprint and made some fine books of their own. They made minor changes to the cover but it looks like the same (excellent) book inside.

3. Flying Machine Press shows the book as "out of print." I don't know how much we can count on the "one left, more ordered" note that is on the Amazon book listeding as of this date (10-18-05), so if you want this, you'd better order it or go for a used one soon. I don't think this is going to get any cheaper or easier to find in the near future.

The most complete work available on a little known topic........1998-08-05

This book is the result of many years of personal research and several trips overseas by Marty O'Connor, and culminated in what is arguably the definitive work on the subject of Austro-Hungarian aces. The writing in this book is neither eloquent nor poetic, but the information is priceless. O'Connor gives a biographical outline of each ace known within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including the number of victories (and the victory lists of several major aces), any personal background available on the pilot in question and as much postwar information as possible. Where no information exists regarding such things as a pilot's birthplace, photo, or postwar occupation, O'Connor specifically makes note of it so the reader is left with no question marks. His work is thorough and his penchant for facts will quickly win the reader's trust. Spanning the language barrier and what in many cases is an almost total lack of official records, O'Connor does a brilliant job of piecing t! ogether enough information to acquaint even a WWI novice to life in the Austro-Hungarian air service. Several appendices trace vital details such as locations of airfields, maps of battle areas and color schemes of many aces' planes. This book is the most complete work I have seen on Austro-Hungarian aces and aircraft, and includes extensive interviews with several of that country's famous aces. Although written more as a reference book than a masterpiece of prose, this book is still highly recommended.

Starting the war with only 35 aircraft, Austro-Hungarian industry went on to produce only moderate numbers of poor quality aircraft. The fliers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire operating on the Serbian and Russian fronts were fortunate at first, finding themselves faced by small numbers of aircraft yet more obsolescent than their own. Serbia fell in 1915, but when Italy declared war the Austro-Hungarians were still faced with a two-front war – a static front against Italy, and a far more fluid one against Russia. Austro-Hungarian fighter pilots performed bravely and often very effectively under extremely difficult geographic, climatic and operational conditions.

Osprey's Austro-Hungarian Aces.......2004-08-02

An interesting addition to Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series, this volume presents yet another little known facet of aviation history. The quality of this series is maintained with this title. There are, however, some deviations from what readers have come to expect as standard. The first half of the text is an overview of the Austro-Hungarian, Italian, and Russian air services, and the ground campaigns which they supported. I found this useful, but it may be less so to enthusiasts of the Great War already well-versed in their histories. It is not until page fifty that the text truly addresses the title. Four of the color profiles are opponents' aircraft, which has not been done in previous works in this series. There are no plan views or upper wing scrap views, which the other WWI titles contain. Also, there are no line drawings, another standard of the series. I point these out as deviations from the norm, and leave it to the individual reader to determine their value.

Overall, I enjoyed the book.

facsinating subject.......2002-09-22

Osprey's series covers many interesting subjects but this is one of the best. If you are a Great War aviation buff check this out, its worth the money. Beautiful artwork about an unusual subject. I have the old Harleyford books about WW1 aircraft and this is just as interesting. Good asides about the Russian and Italian foes. Nice color detail for modellers. Get it.

Everyone Should Read This Book.......2003-03-09

Bob takes you on his journey from beginning to end, describing his fears and triumphs along the way. It is an honest, thought-provoking, and enjoyable read. There is much to be learned by reading Bob's story. It made me think, and continues to make me think, about my own life.

It's refreshing to hear someone openly share about the role of their faith in their life, and in their recovery.

Bob Benson's book 100 MPH With My Hair on Fire was a quick and enjoyable read,yet very thought provoking. The book is a narrative discussion about how his drive to succeed in the business world often came at the expense of his health and time with family. A health crisis forces him to reflect on his lifestyle,priorities and spirituality. The story he tells should strike a cord with many of us. He is the typical white collar executive striving for the "good life." Sound familiar? Mr. Benson's style is brutally honest and heartfelt. The book uses humor and a quick wit to temper the very serious topic of facing your mortality at a young age. He beat the odds and learned some valuable life lessons.
As a Christian and a health professional, I found it refreshing to see him bravely discuss the role his religious beliefs played in facing and dealing with his health crisis. Mr.Benson took a tough,sensitive topic and made it real. This book will appeal to both men and women. It is a "must read" for the Type A persononality in your life!

Great book if you're a Type "A".......2003-01-08

Engaging narrative and thoughts of a 36 year old corporate executive and family man who survived a heart attack caused by his lifestyle. It hits home as he describes how, during treatment, his faith and family life evolve to the proper perspective.

Bob was in good health with no family history of heart problems. He dismissed conventional wisdoms about stress and healthy eating - as we all do. The book is a great reminder to take work a bit less seriously and pay better attention to God and his blessings.
