The example cover letters where very helpful. I am looking for a job and I have used the cover letter as an guide in helping me create my own. I always receive a phone call or letter of response.

Este libro, junto con el de "Resumés" presenta una fantástica colección de Cartas de Presentación para todo tipo de trabajos. Incluso cubre modalidades poco exploradas tipo Cartas-CV o cartas referenciando a terceros que forman parte de tu networking.
A mi modo de ver, le faltaría un poco más de organización a la hora de agrupar las cartas, es complicado en este caso (y curiosamente no lo es en el de Resumés) el diferenciar el trabajo al que va destinada la carta, salvo si uno lee la carta.
Por lo demás, los ejemplos son muy buenos y prácticos.

Finally, a resume book that actually showed me how to write.......2002-06-22
Chapter 1 alone was well worth the price of the book. He provided a sample model resume with numbered components. He then described each resume component, step by step, and provided a detailed description of its layout and content. Following the instructions was easy.
It doesn't get any simpler than this!

The Reader (Previous Reviewer) Didn't Read!.......2002-06-04
Unfortunately, the previous book review gave a bad rap to a really good book containing proven resume advice that has significantly benefited thousands of job seekers (who have gone through our company's outplacement program) in finding new and exciting job opportunities.
Also, unfortunately, the previoius reviewer didn't read!
On page 16 of the book, it clearly states that the the ideal resume FORMAT shown in Chapter 1 is "STRONGLY RECOMMENDED AS THE MODEL FOR TAILORING YOUR OWN RESUME", and that the 175 resume samples that follow were carefully chosen (FROM OVER 25,000 RESUMES)for their CONTENT (not format).
Further, you need to know that the EXACT ADVICE provided in this book has been followed by thousands of outplaced employees going through our company's career transition programs (from such client companies as Procter & Gamble, DuPont, PepsiCO, Kimberly-Clark, Washington Mutual, Scott Paper, US Department of Defense, and numerous others)with enormouse success. Numerous persons, to whom we have provided help, have commented that the resume format recommended by us (and contained in Chapter 1 of this book)played a significant role in helping them getjob interviews as well as job offers. Employers have frequently complimented our clients about the quality and effectiveness of their resumes, and they have enthusiastically shared this information with us after returning from their job interviews..

I have used Richard Beatty's books on job search, resumes, cover letters and interview methods for over 10 years. In my role as a career coach and counselor I have seen, first hand, the effectiveness of his methods and the self-confidence they create for the person seeking a new job.
More than once, I have had prospective employers tell my clients that the quality of the cover letter grabbed their attention, that the resume created an interest in interviewing the candidate and the interview skills face to face sold them on the person's abilities......all using Mr. Beatty's experience reflected in his books.
His techniques and formats work!!!!
Author did not think........1998-04-03
The author states that a resume without an objective is at a "great competetive disadvantage". But upon random sampling of the 175 sample resumes, only 28% have objectives. Therefore, I conclude that based on the recommendations of the author, 72% of the sample resumes are at a "great competetive disadvantage". If you want clear but expensive advice on how to build a resume, this book is OK. If you want to browse samples resumes, you really need to go somewhere else.

We are told we live in turbulent and changing times, should this not provide an important opportunity for management researchers to provide understanding and guidance? Yet there is widespread concern about the efficacy of much research: These are some of the puzzles that Chris Argyris addresses in this short book. Argyris is one of the best known management scholars in the world - a leading light whose work has consistently addressed fundamental organizational questions, and who has provided some of the key concepts and building blocks of our understanding of organizational learning - single and double learning, theory in use, and espoused theory etc. In this book he questions many of the assumptions of organizational theory and research, and his investigation is not confined to academic analysis. He also scrutinizes that capacity for 'unproductive reasoning' (self-deception and rationalization) that is common amongst managers, consultants, and indeed more generally. As well as engaging with the work of leading organizational researchers (Sennett, Gabriel, Burgelman, Czarniawska, Grint, for example)he also ponders the work of the consultants, commentators, and accountants who endorsed Enron. Throughout his purpose is to affirm the goal and values of useful knowledge. His style is direct but fair, challenging, if at times uncompromising. Drawing on his own wealth of experience of researching and working with organizations, this book will be a reference point for all concerned to develop useful knowledge and confront the defences and deceptions that are only too commonplace in the business and academic worlds.

Management scholar Chris Argyris tackles an important problem: the pervasiveness of defensive reasoning that prevents people in organizations from understanding when and why they are skillfully incompetent. Unfortunately, he employs such an academic style that his arguments are primarily useful to fellow scholars, although they would be relevant to managers if they were offered more accessibly. The professor assumes that readers are familiar with social science literature, processes, issues and vocabulary. For those who seek solutions to the organizational problem of defensive reasoning, he offers enlightening explanatory theories, but not much practical advice. That said, it is comforting to note that someone has looked seriously at the disconnection between what executives say and what they do. Argyris catalogues the dimensions of this dysfunction and proposes - although not very concretely - that it may be open to some correction, perhaps through such tools as double-loop learning and "left hand/right hand" analysis. We suggest this book to experts in organizational behavior, corporate culture and issues in scholarship about management.

I was given this book to read from a friend that purchased it in Canada prior to a flight to England. He said I should read it for a selection to our airport book club. I picked it up and lost many nights sleep over this fine book. It is capitavating. Difficult to put it down from page one. This is one read that is worth every penny spent to purchase it. Get to know the group of brave young men that gave their all to defend the freedom that we now enjoy. For the goodness of your sole, get this book and hold the actions of these brave airmen close to your heart. excelant reading.A book you will remember for years. Quite simply, the finest book I have read covering WW2. Plenty of laughter, plenty of tears, and the burning desire to vividly relive the drama of those days, (and I'm relatively young). Anyone who lived through it will find old memories rekindled by the score

Ranks with Miles Tripp's "The Eighth Passenger" as one of the 2 best Bomber Command reminiscences I have read. Perhaps that is due to Peden, like Tripp, becoming a laywer after the war. Peden's sense of humour, honesty, and writing skill combine to make it a winner. Perhaps the humour is the best part, but it is also heart-wrenching and thriling. An absolute winner.
The autobiography of a Canadian pilot in Bomber Command.......1998-08-24
A one-of-a-kind story of a Canadian Pilot in Bomber Command in WW2. Peden takes us through his early enlistment process, the trying time of duty in the BCATP, operational training and finally, mission by mission, through his entire tour as a pilot in first, Stirlings, and later, B-17s. His tale is honest and frank, sharing the fears, triumphs and tragedies of his time with that turbulent and costly service. He documents with chilling clarity the loss of each of his friends throughout the war. Murray Peden has written an evocative personal history of this oft-ignored war, one which should rightly stand as a definitive text on this subject for generations to come.

Good advice for government officials and laypeople.......2004-06-23
There are many aspects of this book that are noteworthy. Dr. Bud's father had kept a diary of his beginning days as a physician, and it's enlightening to see what the medical profession was like back in the 'old days'...it was a much more personal profession than it is today. There is some good advice on what a person who is sick should do to ensure proper medical care for himself or his friends and family. All in all a good read for anyone who has any interest in health and medicine, especially future medical workers.
