5 out of 5 stars reviews for the book.......2006-06-29

"Rob Gray's book provides an excellent general introduction to the environment and business debate. The structure of the book allows the reader to either read it as a whole or to use it as an operational handbook. It is a highly accessible text, well-written and with an excellent index. Three appendices support the main text and provide information on sources of advice, on further reading, and on the research process which was used to gain empirical evidence on the greening of accountancy practice.

"This is an excellent and stimulating presentation of some of the most important issues, consequences and challenges involved in the relationship between business and the environment. The authors have achieved their aim of providing a general introduction to the subject, combined with a practical guide for use by accountants, and they have achieved this in a text which is both easy to read and well-presented. This book is an excellent value for the money, and it deserves to become a standard student text on a range of courses in both business schools and in departments concerned with environmental matters. In addition, it should occupy a prominent position on the bookshelves of those in business who are serious about their commitment to the environment."

4 out of 5 stars good book.......1998-09-02

Gray provides a broad overview of a number of popular arguments. The principle thesis of this text is that traditional accounting practices do not properly allocate environmental quality or compliance costs. Businesses therefore are prone to make decisions on the basis of thios flawed information which are both environmentally and financially harmful. Several pratical suggestions for modifying accounting systems are made, but no radical new ideas are presented.

    Book Description

Conventional economic accounts, which measure Gross National Product (GNP)and related indicators of national performance, do not fully allow for the damages caused to the environment in the course of producing and consuming goods and services. Nor do they fully account for the fact that some resources are being depleted in achieving the living standards that we enjoy today. This failure is important, because policy-makers are guided by the changes in macroeconomic indicators such as GNP. Moreover such indicators are not a good guide to the sustainability of present practices of consumption and production. This book provides practical estimates of one key area of neglect in the present national accounts - the measurement of environmental damages. The book sets out the methodology for making such estimates and then applies it to data from four countries: Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and the UK. The results show what can be achieved in the way of consistent damage estimates and what the key problems are.

      Book Description

Traditional measures of economic activity, such as GDP, take no account of damage done to the stock of natural capital by environmental change nor the loss of welfare that economic activity causes through increased pollution. This book predominantly addresses the second question and develops and expands previous research by the authors (Markandya and Pavan, 1999).

              Description:
Green accounts or input-output accounting systems (IOA) have been developed in countries with intensive agricultural production to facilitate voluntary improvements in farm environmental performance. There is a need for an overview of indicators used and a review of results and experiences reported. Ten IOA systems covering the topics of the farm's use of nutrients, pesticides and energy were selected from a survey of 55 systems and compared in this paper. The approaches and indicators used vary from systems based on good agricultural practices (GAP) to accounts based systems that use physical input-output units. Many IOA systems use farm gate nutrient balances, pesticide use per hectare and energy use per kilogram product. These indicators are easy to calculate but the resulting value needs separate interpretation for the farmer. Other systems include modeled emissions and rate the yearly farm results using closed scales, which allows for easy interpretation but builds on implicit normative assumptions of best practices. Participating farmers were most often reported to be motivated for the use of IOA but empirical evidence of improved environmental farm performance was scarce. IOA systems should be linked with production planning tools used by the advisory services. Farmers and advisors needs better reference values to evaluate the indicator levels (environmental performance) on the individual farm possibly based on analysis of a larger number of farms. The statistical properties of IOA indicators need to be researched regarding: (1) the relation between changed management practice and changes in indicator values on a given farm over a period of time; (2) the relative importance of systematic versus coincidental differences in environmental performance of a set of farms. It is concluded that IOA systems could become effective tools for agri-environmental improvement of European farms given further development and standardization.

                              Book Description

This practical guide provides family physicians with a single comprehensive resource on rural and agricultural medicine. Readers are introduced to the characteristics of the agricultural environment and the hazards that farm workers face. The full spectrum of injuries and conditions unique to the field is covered, including chemical injuries, orthopedic conditions, infectious diseases, plant related diseases, bites, and environmental injuries. This clinical text goes beyond the treatment of injuries and highlights prevention. The content is current and reflects changing agricultural practices, including advances in the use of safety equipment and in physical and biological monitoring. Useful tables clearly present key information. With a combined focus on treatment and prevention, the book is an indispensable reference for family physicians who care for patients in rural and agricultural areas. The text stands out because it is both comprehensive and practice based.

                                Book Description

IAU Transactions XXIIIB summarizes the work of the XXIIIrd General Assembly. The addresses given during the Inaugural and Closing Ceremonies are reproduced in Chapters I and III, respectively. The Proceedings of the two sessions of the General Assembly, including the Report of the Finance Committee, will be found in Chapter II. The Report of the Resolutions Committee and the Resolutions approved by the General Assembly are found in Chapter IV. The Accounts for 1994-1996 and other aspects of the administration of the Union are recorded in Chapter V, which constitutes the Report of the Executive Committee and thus provides the permanent record of the activities of the Union in the period 1994-1997. Chapter VI of this volume contains the reports of the Commission meetings in Kyoto, provided by the Commission Presidents. The Statutes, Bye-Laws and Working Rules of the Union as revised at the General Assembly are published in Chapter VII, while an updated version of the Rules for Scientific Meetings is given in Chapter VIII. Finally, Chapter IX contains lists of the countries adhering to the Union and of its approximately 8300 individual members, ordered by geographical location and commission membership as well as alphabetically (with full addresses). The IAU remains one of the few Scientific Unions in which a vigorous body of individual members contributes in a crucial way to the spirit and aims of the Union.

                                    Book Description

We'd like to thank New York University for having used this publication as a text book as well as the other institutions of higher learning that use it for instructional purposes. This book extensively describes how to use e-mail in dozens of business situations and environments. Bulk e-mail marketing is also discussed but to a significantly lesser extent.

Because it's printed frequently, and printed in smaller amounts, the publisher is able to update the book roughly every 3 months. It's more-than-likely the most current book of it's type, no matter when you get it (as most other books are 4 to 12 months old before they even hit the bookstore.) This publication also discusses in detail the activities of Electronic Account Executives & Electronic Customer Service Representatives. It's an excellent guide to the Internet for those with limited or more e-mail experience. It also has several large reference tables and a massive glossary. All of the roughly 300 Web addresses in the book are on the book's free Web site for easier access (compared to typing in the Web addresses of the sites you want to look at.)

This book's pages are large in size, 8 by 11 inches. The extra large size of this book's pages mean that substantially more information is on each page of this book as compared to most other books.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good tips.......2002-10-17

Has more info than a lot of books but not as good a book for advanced Internet users, more for beginners and intermediate. It's extensive index was helpful.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2002-07-19

I was fortunate to get the most updated edition and learned a lot from the book.

I found this book to be informative and interesting. I am a neophyte at all of this and it was easy to read and gave me great ideas and practical tips for what I want to learn and do. I highly recommend it no matter what your experience level is.

4 out of 5 stars This book has useful information........2001-03-10

As search engines list less and less now a days, books like this with lots of different Web addresses can be handy. It does have a few typos though.

5 out of 5 stars good for those looking to set up an electronic store.......2001-03-10

I found it really helpful, at least I knew what I was talking about when I started talking to e-commerce providers.
