Handbook of Competence and Motivation

Book Description
"Motivating Humans represents an excellent integration of different motivational constructs. . . . The main purpose of Ford's book and his theory, motivational systems theory (MST), is to provide an integrative and coherent model of motivation that synthesizes the various constructs from the different theories into one comprehensive framework. . . . It represents an important addition to the knowledge base on motivation and will be generative of much future research. Moreover, the book presents the framework in a scholarly, yet readable, fashion that makes the book accessible to professional psychologists as well as graduate and undergraduate students." --Paul R. Pintrich in Contemporary Psychology Why do people do the things they do? In Motivating Humans, Ford answers this age-old question and offers the reader a precise and comprehensive description of the basic substance of human motivation--what it is, how it works, and how it impacts what people do and how well they do it. He also shows how classic and contemporary motivation theory in education, management, and psychology can be integrated into a coherent and unified framework called Motivational Systems Theory, from which he derives 17 principles for motivating humans. Different from any other motivation book, Motivating Humans presents numerous unique features: a variety of concrete examples to bridge the gap between abstract theory and the world of practical human affairs; an applications chapter that explores such issues as ways to promote social responsibility in youth, ways to increase work productivity and job satisfaction, and ways to increase learning and school achievement; the most up-to-date coverage of recent studies in motivation; and, pedagogical devices, including summary tables to help the reader digest and remember key information. Unique, comprehensive, and accessibly written, Motivating Humans will inspire a wide readership, including professors and students in psychology, management, education, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology. Class-Tested: What the Students Say . . . "The chart on the history of motivational theory organized broadly by MST concepts was extremely helpful in providing the reader with a look at the field in a glance." "First and foremost, the fact that this is a legitimate psychological theory and I can understand it, having had very little other exposure to psychology, is a very strong aspect of the book. Is refers to and explains a variety of psychological theories and principles without losing me. Also, any theory that seems to unify a large volume of disparate work is always attractive to mr, especially if it does a good enough job surveying its predecessors as I think the book does. Finally, I think that the summary of the LSF in chapter two was integral to the 'largeness' or wide-view of the book. It helped to tie in and explain the 'whole-person' approach to motivational theory." I really liked how MST emphasized the role of emotions in motivation and human action where other theories had rationalized them. Emotions are very powerful and, I believe, virtually impossible to explain away--something that I think psychology does too readily." "Motivational Systems Theory is the most comprehensive and compelling theory of human motivation which I have seen to date. Martin Ford has taken an impoverished and muddled field of psychological inquiry and transformed it into a coherent and useful tool for explaining human behavior. Chapter 6 is especially brilliant. It gives an overview of all the major (and most of the not-so-major) theories and capitalizes on their similarities rather than their differences." "Most practitioners in schools and business recognize the value of motivating people and do so operating from their gut; it is good to know that there is a workable and logical theory to put behind the practice and help refine it. Chapter 7 is particularly helpful; one could read this chapter and none others and still benefit." "Finally, a book which will help educators turn their students on to learning. It should be required reading for all classroom teachers." Praise for this volume . . . "Motivating Humans, by Martin Ford, presents one of the most complete and comprehensive theories of human motivation yet to be proposed. This is a significant work that is essential reading for all interested both in understanding motivation and in applying motivational principles in the workplace." --Robert J. Sternberg, Yale University "Motivating Humans is a well thought-out and well-organized book that focuses on issues of motivation. Educators, in particular, will be interested in this volume. It utilizes a combination of logic and existing literature to build its case. . . . Martin Ford's work is creative, yet analytic. Motivating Humans will certainly stimulate some serious class discussion." --Gerald R. Adams, College of Family and Consumer Studies University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada "Using a broad, systems perspective, Ford has skillfully organized a wide and all-too-often confusing array of advances in motivation theory and research. Students, researchers, and practitioners in education and psychology should find this book most helpful in providing a clear and thought-provoking introduction to the field." --Ruth Kanfer, Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota "Motivating Humans contains a wealth of information--from theory to application--to help educators increase school learning and achievement. Twenty-five pages of bibliography alone make this book attest to its thoroughness. A chapter of theories of motivation can only be regarded as definitive--some 31 theories of motivation are described and arranged in a table format. . . . Ford regards facilitation, not control, as the guiding idea for motivating people; an idea that fits nicely with the growing role of teacher as facilitator. Wisely, he offers no ready formula for facilitating motivation, for 'there are no magic motivational buttons that can be pushed to make people want to learn, work hard, and act in a responsible manner.' But Ford does offer a comprehensive glimpse into the mechanism of motivation for those who are trying to find their own paths toward inspiring it. . . . It deserves the highest praise and the widest reading for its treatment of such a complex subject in such an accessible and thorough manner. Motivating Humans should serve long as the standard source and reference on motivation." --Educational Leadership
Customer Reviews:
An Integrated Theoretical Framework of Human Motivation.......2002-01-26
Regardless of your expertise in this subject matter, you should read this book (if you have not already). It is an outstanding work, using a systems-theoretical approach to integrate the many theories related to personality and motivation. Like S. Ceci's work in the cognitive domain, "On Intelligence More or Less...," Ford is absolutely the best single source for anyone interested in understanding the domain of personality and motivation, for fun or profit!
tedious at times, but worth the effort to read and apply.......1997-12-02
the discussion of goals, and Personal agency beliefs and the tables that acompany them are fresh, useful, and thought provoking

Book Description
Leadership is motivation and motivation is leadership, say the authors of this important and unique study. The two elements are inseparable, but until now no one has actually conceptualized motivation in a useful way to demonstrate and analyze the connection between it and leadership. The key for leaders is dealing with the emotions that underlie and activate motivation. Maddock and Fulton provide a highly successful, proven, and replicable approach not only to motivate people, but also to train them to lead others. The authors develop an 11 level structure of human motivation that defines and describes motivation in simple, graphic, all-inclusive language. They then show how leaders can use this motivational hierarchy to solve complex problems in the workplace. The result is a blueprint to help executives in all types of organizations manage more effectively, and as they do so, to motivate and truly lead the people who depend on them for guidance and direction. Maddock and Fulton offer several scenarios to show how their ideas work in practice. In the "vertical fix" they demonstrate how motives that get out of synch with each other can be re-aligned, eliminating the chaos that would otherwise occur. In the "lateral fix" they show how a person who may be functioning at the extreme edge of motivation can be moved back toward the center, a place where the person's effect on others is most and best felt. Well documented throughout, their book will be important reading for training and development professionals, specialists in organizational behavior, and executives at all levels in public and private sectors.

Motivation, Emotions, and Leadership.......2000-01-17
A very disappointing book. While the title and concept of the text are quite promising, the content is sadly lacking. The Authors show an almost unbelievable lack of both understanding and knowledge in the areas of motivation, emotion and leadership. The research on which the books concepts are based also seems dubious at best. All in all,. this book is of little interest either academically or professionally.
An excellent exploration of motivation and leadership........1999-03-12
This book strikes the theme that leadership is motivation and motivation is leadership. It demonstrates how unlocking emotion is the key to instigating motivation, and motivation is the key to effective leadership. The authors use case studies to explore how managers try to ignore emotions at the cost of failing to unlock motivation. This is a unique, original approach to conceptualizing and understanding motivation, base on research. It delves into the emotions that underlie and activate motivation and presents an eleven-level structure of motivation that is all-inclusive. The book shows how leaders can use this model to solve complex problems in the workplace, lead people, and teach people to lead. This book is rich in content; recommended.

Description:
The present research examined how self-sacrificial leadership predicts followers' emotional and motivational reactions as a function of how autocratic this leader behaves (i.e., pushing his opinions or not). A scenario experiment and a laboratory experiment were conducted to test the prediction that, in addition to main effects for self-sacrifice and autocratic leadership, the positive effect of self-sacrifice is most strongly when the leader does not act in an autocratic manner. The findings of these two studies supported the predictions. Also, the laboratory experiment showed that the interactive effect on motivation to work with the leader was mediated by followers' emotional reactions. The present results are discussed in light of prior research on self-sacrifice and charismatic leadership in general and suggestions are made that future research needs to focus more on the interactions between different leadership behaviors and the psychological processes underlying these effects.

Portable Prairie: Confessions of an Unsettled Midwesterner
ASIN: 0803237073 |
Book Description
Though he’d lived in Iowa all his life, the allure of the prairie had somehow eluded John Price—until, after a catastrophic flood, a brief glimpse of native wildlife suddenly brought his surroundings home to him. Not Just Any Land is a memoir of Price’s rediscovery of his place in the American landscape and of his search for a new relationship to the life of the prairie—that once immense and beautiful wilderness of grass now so depleted and damaged as to test even the deepest faith.
Price’s journey toward a conscious commitment to place takes him to some of America’s largest remaining grasslands and brings him face to face with a troubling, but also hopeful, personal and environmental legacy. It also leads him through the region’s literature and into conversations with contemporary nature writers—Linda Hasselstrom, Dan O’Brien, William Least Heat-Moon, and Mary Swander—who have devoted themselves to living in, writing about, and restoring the grasslands. Among these authors Price observes how a commitment to the land can spring from diverse sources, for instance, the generational weight of a family ranch, the rites of wildlife preservation, the “deep maps” of ancestral memory, and the imperatives of a body inflicted with environmental illness. The resulting narrative is an innovative blend of memoir, nature writing, and literary criticism that bears witness to the essential bonds between spirit, art, and earth.
Customer Reviews:
Meet the plains states, minus stereotypes.......2006-01-21
This is an excellent regional history - social, biological and natural history - of the American plains.
John Price's voice is expansive and insightful, including his family connections to various spots in the middle plains states. It also is a look at just what it will take to ground him, via nature, in life. And, as a relatively recent husband, it is also a reflection on where that grounding will take place, and the give-and-take that will be involved with his wife.
As to the specifics of life on the plains, while finding much to celebrate once stereotypes are penetrated, stereotypes still have a fair degree of truth, as do cold, hard facts.
Racism and sexism can still be found in the Midwest, for example. They may be fading away, but they haven't disappeared.
Unfortunately, what has disappeared is untainted land. Take these eye-opening stats from Price's home state of Iowa, for example.
Just one-half of 1 percent of the land is in a pre-European natural state, the worst of any of the 50 states. Even worse, it is so farm-and-ranch chemical laden that only 20 percent of it can EVER be restored to that pre-contact state, it is estimated, citing Richard Manning's "Grassland."
Can we change to something more sustainable? That question, too, gets pondered in this book, and from different angles.
===
Two caveats on matters historical and botanical.
First, the Quapaw and Caddo lived in the southern plains, not the northern ones; second, the prairie did not extend from Appalachia all the way to the Rockies -- Illinois was the one cis-Mississippian state with significant prairie.
"Where Surprises Can Live and Grow".......2004-07-20
(from the Aug. 2004 issue of NCB News of Nebraska Center for the Book http://www.unl.edu/NCB/)
In the first sentence of the acknowledgements page, John Price states: "This is a memoir." But what follows in NOT JUST ANY LAND is not simple autobiography; it is more a combination of scholarly research, self-searching, and the time-honored method of using others' words to clarify his own thoughts about the region formerly known as prairie, what we call the Great Plains. This "memoir" is grassland exploration and ecology literature search at its best: Price cites over 65 authors in his bibliography.
Price traveled to South Dakota, Kansas and Iowa to discover what remained of the prairie, and in the process interviewed four writers whose books had spoken to him of the region. These writers - their varied views, stories and struggles - are the subjects of the four main chapters of the book: "Reaching Yarak: The Peregrinations of Dan O'Brien," "Not Just Any Land: Linda Hasselstrom at Home," "Native Dreams: William Least-Heat Moon and Chase County, Kansas," and "A Healing Home: Mary Swander's Recovery Among the Iowa Amish." Price's insightful questions and sense of humor make the book's subject highly accessible and memorable.
Great Plains enthusiasts, as well as those wanting to understand this often-overlooked region ("...where surprises can live and grow"), will delight in his extensive use of quotations from well-known writers such as Wendell Berry, Gretel Ehrlich, Wes Jackson, William Kittredge, Wallace Stegner and Terry Tempest Williams, to name just a few. Woven through the narrative in often lyrical passages is Price's own exploration of place, community, family history and an understanding of "...what it is that the land demands of us in our daily lives: the nature of responsibility."
Price, who grew up in north central Iowa, has written an important book about region that will be studied, discussed and enjoyed for years to come. He is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Amazing!.......2002-07-23
A real thriller. It keeps your interest until the end. I read it in a day.
It is about the Wakefield twins, who go to London to work for a newspaper. There, Jessica finds a rich guy who she falls in love with. But there is a problem. He's suspected of being a wolfman, especially by Elizabeth and her new boyfriend, Luke. But Jessica doens't believe it. She is sure she will find the real wolfman. Elizabeth thinks Jessica is in danger, because she doesn't know that she is in more!
scary!.......2001-08-02
Read this if you don't mind scary books with just a slight gory edge.Which of the twins is dating a boy who enjoys ripping peoples throats out??
AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-05
It really makes me wonder whether the Americans really do perceive us as a bunch of prudish snobs. If this book is any indication of this - then I am very worried. Elizabeth manages to have 'tea' with the Queen - yeah right! I have spent 19 years in England, and have not even been inside Buckingham Palace - let alone have had 'tea' with the Queen! God! How juvenile! Come on Kate and Francine - don't underestimate us - we may read Sweet Valley, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we are complete fools! Also, I cannot believe that Liz and Jess are completely stupid as to not recognise the Queen's daughter with glasses and a dye job - yes, I can really understand that!!
romantic, exicting, a never guess ending........1998-07-30
YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!! If you are a S.V.H fan like me, you have to read this. You will just love how when the thing you trust the most in the book gets twisted around. I cried during the last two chapters. You will never guess what will happen. If you don't read this you'll be missing out on something great.
THE BEST SO FAR!.......1998-06-20
It was really good because, unlike some thrillers, you didn't really know who the killer was 'til the end. After I finished I would have no trouble going right back to the beginning and reading it again.
