A Major History of Early Americans’ Ideas about Conservation

Fifty years after the Revolution, American farmers faced a crisis: the failing soils of the Atlantic states threatened the agricultural prosperity upon which the republic was founded. Larding the Lean Earth explores the tempestuous debates that erupted between “improvers,” intent on sustaining the soil of existing farms, and “emigrants,” who thought it wiser and more “American” to move westward as the soil gave out. Larding the Lean Earth is a signal work of environmental history and an original contribution to the study of antebellum America.

5 out of 5 stars The debate over natural resource management.......2003-02-10

Farming occupied the majority of American pursuits in the 19th century, tied up most of the nation's capital, and occupied the thoughts of farmers and politicians alike. Before expansion into the West could succeed, conservation of land and resources would have to be taken into account: Larding The Lean Earth points out that the debate over natural resource management began in the 1820s and pitted farmers against plantation owners in a conflict which would affect westward expansion processes as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Larding the Lean Earth.......2002-09-24

When we think of the conservation movement in America, our minds are drawn to people such as John James Audubon, John Muir, Henry David Thoreau, and Aldo Leopold. Although these men wrote with passion about conservation, the political movement had deeper roots. In his original and thought provoking book, Steven Stoll proposes that conservation thought emerged as a political force in the 19th century exploitation of the land. Two forces emerged - the improvers of the land who believed that farming practices must be used to sustain the soil, - and the emigrants who kept moving to new untouched wilderness as their land gave out. Today, most of the arable land is cultivated and much of it in North America is maintained by technology. Larding the Lean Earth explores how technology has come to dominate the agricultural landscape. It is a must read for anyone interested in the history of conservation, and anyone close to the land.

        Book Description

This is the new, revised edition of the far-out book of photographs of the moon, Mars and other planets that made NASA wince and reluctantly offer several public denials. With hundreds of photographs and illustrations, Extraterrestrial Archaeology takes the reader to the strange and fascinating worlds of the moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and other planets for a look at the alien structures that appear there. Using official NASA and Soviet photos, as well as other photos taken via telescope, this book seeks to prove that many of the planets (and moons) of our solar system are in some way inhabited by intelligent life. There are also many blowups of NASA photos and detailed diagrams of structures. Extraterrestrial Archaeology includes: NASA photos of pyramids and domed cities on the moon; Pyramids and giant statues on Mars; Hollow moons of Mars and other planets; Robot mining vehicles that move about the moon processing valuable metals; NASA and Russian photos of space bases on Mars and its moons; A British scientist who discovered a tunnel on the moon, and other "bottomless craters"; Early claims of trips to the moon and Mars; Structural anomalies on Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus and Neptune; NASA, the moon and antigravity; NASA's confirmation of water on the moon; New photos from Russia and the latest face-on-Mars pictures. Extraterrestrial Archaeology is highly illustrated with photos, diagrams and maps! Now in a German language edition, this continues to be the only book widely available on anomalistic structures with UFOs on the moon.

        3 out of 5 stars A little boring.......2003-11-21

David Hatcher Childress documents some little known facts regarding the planets in our solar system and why there could very well have been life elsewhere besides earth. Largely based on photos taken by NASA and the Russians, Childress attempts to show the reader why he believes there are ruins on the other plants in our solar system. However he gets a little too in-depth which results in the book getting a little boring sometimes. Still a very interesting read.

1 out of 5 stars Speculative analysis of planetary images.......2001-02-13

I could see more artificiality from staring at the surface of a stucco wall. This book presents planetary images taken by the NASA probes over the years. Some speculate that there are some extraterrestrial intelligent activities present, not. I see anomalies of light and shadow and just plain old geological activities.

        5 out of 5 stars Up-to-date, informative, fascinating reading........2000-07-03

Based on NASA and Russian space photography, as well as other photos and drawings created by telescope viewers, this revised and expanded edition of Extraterrestrial Archaeology provides persuasive evidence and documentation that life exists outside of planet Earth. This up-to-date edition includes all of the latest discoveries on Mars and the Moon, including NASA's recent admission of water on the moon and a Russian analysis of obelisks on the Moon. Also featured are robot mining vehicles that move about the mono; NASA photographs of lunar pyramids and domed cities; the hollow moons of Mars and other planets; NASA and Russian photos of space bases on Mars; a "tunnel" on the Moon and other "bottomless craters"; structural anomalies on Venus and Mercury; plus NASA cover-ups on Moon missions and Mars probes. Challenging, iconoclastic, thought-provoking, and highly recommended reading for students of space exploration and life elsewhere in our Solar System, Extraterrestrial Archaeology is enhanced with large-format photos, maps, and a bibliography for further study and research.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Book of Its Kind!.......2000-02-15

Extraterrestrial Archaeology by Childress is the only book of its kind! It is the only book that I know of that has large format photos of the so-called structures on the Moon. Other books, such as SOMEBODY ELSE IS ON THE MOON by George Leonard or OUR MYSTERIOUS SPACESHIP MOON by Don Wilson are both long out of print. Childress has a run-down, with large illustrations of the various theories and evidence that the Moon is occupied, as well as other planets and moons in our solar system. This book will blow your mind, whether you are a skeptic or a believer!

5 out of 5 stars Only large format book on mysteries of the Moon, etc........1999-11-07

As a researcher in the mysteries of our Moon, Mars, Venus, etc., I know of no other book that has the kind of large photos of strange objects on the Moon such as pyramids, obelisks, domes, moving objects, etc. etc. Childress gives us the opertunity to look for ourselves at these "objects" and even get the original photos in some cases! An incredible book!

              Book Description

The emerging paradigm of collaborative networked organizations (CNOs), or simply collaborative networks, represents a dynamic and multidisciplinary research and development area for which a number of research results are available from many international and national projects. A large number of practical application experiments and pilot cases also provide evidence on what works and what still remains as a challenge for CNOs. The fast evolution of information and communication technologies and in particular the so-called Internet technologies, also represents an important motivator for the emergence of new forms of collaboration. There is, however, an urgent need to start more consolidated and holistic research strategies to support proper developments in this area.
This book includes a comprehensive set of recommendations from the multi-disciplines involved in CNOs, towards the establishment of a research agenda for emerging collaborative networks. These recommendations are the result of a 30-month initiative, the THINK creative project, involving more than 250 experts and visionaries from academia, research, and industry.
Collaborative Networked Organizations provides valuable elements for research strategy planners, decision-makers at research funding organizations, group leaders in research institutions, and heads of research departments in companies interested in research and innovative development activities in the area of e-business and collaborative networks. Furthermore, the book can also provide valuable direction to PhD advisors and PhD students to focus their research themes.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A864453. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The design and execution of a networked virtual environment (NVE) are challenging tasks made even more difficult by the fact that NVEs are becoming more complex and difficult to manage. In a distributed environment, each simulation not only computes its own behaviors and publishes them to the network, but it must accurately represent all other entities participating in the NVE. To simplify this task, this thesis implements method to make distributed simulations dynamically extensible, flexible, specific, and consistent. Bamboo provides the ability to dynamically extend the virtual environment by defining a convention by which plug in modules can be added during simulation runtime. The HLA provides the network communication layer that transports entity state updates to all members of the distributed simulation. These two tools combine to create a unique solution to problems inherent in designing modem networked virtual environments. The implementation is dynamically extensible which increases the flexibility implementers have in designing virtual environments. The HLA transports the entity updates and the module name that must be used to represent the entity. This method allows programmers to design only their module because modules representing other entities will load as needed during the execution. This method of implementing virtual environments that promises to streamline the design and implementation process.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A043023. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Interfaces to military Virtual Reality (VR) systems, such as NPSNET IV.9, have been limited mainly to keyboard, mouse, and joystick devices. This presents two major problems; remembering how to access all the functionality of the system, and using the interface when the user is otherwise physically constrained. This can occur during the use of body-position tracking devices and Heads-Up-Displays (HUD). Voice recognition and Natural Language Processing (NLP) were used as a solution to both problems. The approach taken was to develop a networked Spoken Language System (SLS) using a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) voice recognition and NLP system. The Nuance Speech Recognition System from Nuance Communications was chosen after analyzing the special requirements of NPSNET. Implementing the SLS occurred in four phases. First, vocabularies and grammars were developed to simulate the 108 keyboard commands, focusing on flexibility and decreased response latency. Second, new C++ classes were written to ease reuse of the Nuance API's. Third, a control panel was written to manage the voice processing, and fourth, the code was integrated into NPSNET. As a result of this effort, a new voice-enabled interface exists for NPSNET. In addition, C++ classes exist to ease future use of the Nuance API in other software systems. All of the 108 keyboard commands are executable through voice control with a 83.8% sentence understanding rate in a noisy background environment.

                          Book Description

Edward B. Lewis’ science is the bridge linking experimental genetics as conducted in the first half of the 20th century, and the powerful molecular genetic approaches that revolutionized the field in its last quarter. His Nobel Prize winning studies founded the field of developmental genetics and laid the groundwork for our current understanding of the universal, evolutionarily conserved strategies controlling animal development. A lesser-known aspect of Lewis’ canon is the pioneering studies he carried out on ionizing radiation and human cancer. In doing so, he was propelled into a public storm over nuclear weapons testing policy. For the first time Lewis’ key publications in the fields of genetics, developmental biology, radiation and cancer are compiled within one volume.

Howard Lipshitz, a close colleague of Lewis for 20 years, provides invaluable commentaries on the papers placing them in their scientific and historical context and, throughout, giving insight into Lewis’ approach to science and the motivations that drove Lewis' choice of subject matter.

This book will be invaluable to a wide audience of professionals in the life and biomedical sciences; including geneticists, developmental biologists, molecular biologists, radiation biologists and cancer researchers. It provides source material for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in genetics, developmental biology, radiation and cancer. In addition, historians of science will find it to be a valuable resource both because it contains original research publications and because of the illuminating commentary.
