how they missed!.......2006-03-23

well, i like the title very much. this book exploring world's great architectural, the great style of indian, hindu architecture. but how the author missed the four famous and great locations.

first 'chidambaram' place of cosmic dancing shiva called 'natarajar'. this is the second largest temple in tamil nadu. here the 'karpagraham' is golden roofed. just 125 km from thanjavur. its built in cholas period.

second 'gangaikonda cholapuram' this is built by son of 'raja raja cholan'. this is similiar shape to 'thanjavur - prahadeeswarar' temple. actuall its planned to build bigger than that. its basement is bigger than 'thanjavur temple' but gopuram is smaller. just around 70 km from thanjavur. its also cholas period.

third 'kumbakonam' here you can fine lot of temples, this city called temple city. only 50 km from thanjavur. its too cholas period.

fourth 'dharasuram' in here the temple is not huge but the craftmanship is great. only 5 km from kumbakonam towards thanjavur.

i really wondering how this author missed these very interestin and great temples. without these temples this book is not worth to me! but i bought it!!

Very Delicious Temple book.......2002-07-10

Haven't yet hit too much of the content, but it's a wonderful publication in it's photography and high-quality publication value... Great pictures, great detail, and from what I see, the discussion of the temple architeture and sculpture looks equally promising. Definitely more of an art and architecture book about temples, than a book about Hinduism it's temples.

Taschen World Architecture series is a hit.......2000-01-23

I traveled in India for six months in 1997-98 and am now reliving the visit, thanks to this wonderful visual survey. A great feast for the eye. Best of the India photo books.

If you liked this book, you might also want to check out other photo books of India that examine areas differently...for instance, there is a wonderful illustration book by a British artist (can't recall his name now; he also did a book on Italy as well)...and a fabulous in-depth book on Varanasi, called Benares Seen From Within, by Richard Lannoy. This book is a must-have.

Taschen has published a spectacular book called Indian Interiors, which is a real spectacle of wealthy people's fabulous homes and a few peasant places, too.

At last, a moderately priced book that captures the beauty of one of the world's great archi- tectures. The unique forms and textures of Hindu architecture are an invaluable inspiration to the creative artist, and for that reason alone, I highly recommend this book as an important addition to the artist's library.

A Good Read.......2006-09-28

The Love Temples of Khajuraho by Steve Reichstein is an entertaining blend of travel log and coming of age story. In an autobiographical book Reichstein recounts a one year trip he took around the world in 1964. Having been rejected by a seductive southern belle, he sets off on a journey around the world in the hope that the experience will give him the maturity and poise that will be needed to win her heart. His trip is taken at a time when America is on the cusp of the radical cultural and political changes that will dominate the rest of the decade. The book consists of his wonderfully written observations of the people he meets and the societies he encounters on his quest. The other theme is his constant wondering if he his gaining the kind of transformative experiences that will provide him with maturity he believes he needs. His experience at the Love Temples with its highly erotic images produces an experience that is transforming but not in the way he imagined. Depressed rather than enlightened, he continues his journey feeling defeated and disappointed. His meeting with his southern belle at the end of the book finally provides him with what he was seeking, the kind of transformative experience that most young men must experience if they are to make to transition from youth to maturity.

To the author's credit, her compact book (only 107 pages) in an ideal introduction to this important monument group built in central India from 900-1200AD. She covers a broad range of topics including the history of the monuments, their architectural components and addressing controversies inspired by their erotic content. The book has 13 illustrations, 2 maps and 29 photographs that clearly illustrate points raised in the text.

Travelers should consider this book an essential item for a visit; it includes a short appendix at the end with details about restaurants, hotels, transportation, guides and museums at the site.

For an in depth view of the topic, refer to the author's 1996 book "The Religious Imagery of Khajuraho" and her 1984 book "Erotic Sculpture of India: A Socio-Cultural Study."

This volume is from the Oxford University Press "Monumental Legacy" series about World Heritage Sites in India. Other books in the series cover the Ellora caves, the 14th c. Calypso is back...after a summer in America with Star and Georgina, she returns to St. Augustine in the middle of two text romances: Prince Freddie and Billy! However, she finds out she has to share a room with evil Honey O'Hare and aloof rich girl Portia, while Georgina and Star get to room together with a real princess, Indie. Calypso is off to a rough start. All her friends drop out of latin, leaving her alone. She feels like Star and Georgina are drifting away from her....but she makes friends with Indie and Portia, and everything goes better. Then she makes a mistake and alienates herself from everyone. Freddie isn't texting her, and Billy is acting weird. Is Freddie secretly seeing Portia? Will everyone get to go to the royal ball with Freddie except for her? And why is Honey now the only person who will talk to her? Will Calypso get her friends back, get her guy, and be able to keep up her fencing?

Fourteen-year-old Calypso Kelly (otherwise known as "The American Freak) has never felt as if she fit in with the rich, British girls who attend school with her at St. Augustine's English Boarding School. Sure, she's got a few close friends, but some of the other students are SO stuck-up. Like Honey O'Hare, Calypso's worst enemy, and dorm mate for the year. Honey has despised Calypso from the very first day she arrived at St. Augustine's, and has been out to saboatage her forever. Like it's Calypso's fault that she's more than a year younger than every other girl in her grade, and she doesn't have as much expendable cash. Anyway, Calypso has been flirting with two very fit (hot) boys over text messages all summer. And when Honey finds out, she decides to ruin the relationships that Calypso has created. Including the one with her boy toy Prince Freddie. Unfortunately, Calypso has no idea what's going on, and when she turns to her friends for help, she realizes that they're too caught up with their new pal, a real life Princess, to care about her petty problems. This is sure to be one super tough semester at St. Augustine's.

Tyne O'Connell truly has the writing chops to pen stories about a group of rich, snooty teenage girls attending an ultra-chic private school. Her characters are hilarious, and truly bring the story to life, what with their catty viciousness and obsessiveness over how they look. Once again, Calypso and the crazy predicaments will keep readers on the edge of their seats laughing out loud while reading this book, and for days after. I can't wait for the next installment about Calypso and her crazy friends, as this book leaves quite a cliffhanger. A must read!

This book will make you laugh out loud. But it's funny in this British, sophisticated, sublime way. Over the top, yet understated. Honey O'Hare has to be the most outrageous mean girl ever. I just love Calypso. Can't say enough about this book.
