The annual high school contests have been sponsored since 1950 by the Mathematical association of America and the Society of Actuaries, and more recently by Mu Alpha Theta (1965), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (1967) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (1971). Problems from the contests during the period 1950-1960 are published in Volume 5 of the New Mathematical Library, and those for 1961-1965 are published in Volume 17. The New Mathematical Library will continue to publish these contest problems from time-to-time; the present volume contains those from the period 1966-1972. The questions were compiled by Professor C.T. Salkind until his death, and since 1968 by Professor J.M. Earl, who died on November 25, 1972 after submitting problems for the 1973 contest. Professors Earl and Salkind also prepared the solutions for the contest problems. In preparing this and the earlier Contest Problem Books the editors of the NML have expanded these solutions and added alternative solutions.

A good source of challenging mathematics problems........2007-01-06

This text compiles the American High School Mathematics Examinations, now called the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), for the years 1966 - 1972. The book contains the questions, their answers and solutions, and a listing of the problems classified by topic. Each examination contains 35 multiple choice questions meant to be answered without the aid of a calculator. In 1966, a penalty was introduced for wrong answers in order to discourage random guessing.

Each examination contains four sections, which are progressively more challenging. The first three contain ten questions apiece, and the last section contains five questions. The editors state that the problems in the first two sections are meant to test for understanding of basic concepts, while the latter sections are meant to test for the ability to apply skills to new situations. The problems draw upon the high school curriculum, but a knowledge of modular arithmetic is helpful. In the subject index, the topics listed include algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and miscellaneous problems drawn from combinatorics, number theory, logic, probability, and set theory. The problems range in difficulty from routine problems to those that require considerable ingenuity to solve.

The format of the book allows you to solve the problems and check your answers before looking at the solutions. Reading the authors' solutions is instructive, as they provide elegant solutions to the problems and sometimes provide alternative solutions. Also, some of the solutions contain interesting comments about related problems.

Working through this text will help develop your problem solving skills. It could prove useful in preparing for the American Mathematics Competition. However, the format and some of the contents of the test have changed since these examinations were administered. Working through the fifth, sixth, or seventh volumes of this series would be preferable if you are preparing for the AMC. The Contest Problem Book V: American High School Mathematics Examinations (AHSME) / American Invitational Mathematics Examinations (AIME) 1983-1988 (Anneli Lax New Mathematical Library) is the only one that contains problems from the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), for which high scorers on the AMC qualify.

Standard text for soil microbiology.......2002-09-18

I was a graduate student in soils and forestry when I took a class in soil microbiology that used this text. It is essentially the gold standard for soil micro texts. It isn't overly technical, but it includes a thorough analysis of the basic concepts needed to understand most aspects of soil microbiology research and application. The book uses mostly agronomic examples, but there is enough variety of ecosystems to make it useful for those working in forestry, grasslands, and almost any type of soil. Those interested in detailed discussions of molecular microbial methods or biotechnology may be disappointed, but for the general student looking to understand what those billion microbes per teaspoon of soil are doing, this book is the best introduction out there.

IAU Transactions XXIIB summarizes the work of the XXIInd General Assembly. The discourses given during the Inaugural and Closing Ceremonies are reproduced in Chapters I and III, respectively. The proceedings of the two sessions of the General Assembly will be found in Chapter II, which includes the Resolutions and the report of the Finance Committee. The Statutes, Bye-Laws and a few working rules of the Union are published in Chapter IV. The Accounts and other aspects of the administration of the Union are recorded in Chapter V, together with the report of the Executive Committee for this last triennium, and provide the permanent record for the Union in the period 1991-1994. This volume also contains the Commission reports from The Hague compiled by the Presidents of the Commissions (Chapter VI). Finally, Chapter VII contains the list of countries adhering to the Union and the alphabetical, geographical and commission membership lists of about 8000 individual members. The IAU still appears to be unique among the scientific Unions in maintaining this category of individual membership which contributes in a crucial way to the spirit and the aims of the Union.

I am a big fan of Meg Cabot I've read I think a little more than 10 of her books and liked all but one. This book I love although I'm almost finished 80% really.
But I love the humor and the slight romance and how she writes makes me read so fast that I'm like "Where's the next one? Ah!!! I don't have it, must go get it" (Not literaly but you get the point (it's a really good book))
I was acually hopeing that someone would reas this and know what I'm talking about, if you own a copy of this book, in the back there is an advertisment for another book and it sounds really interesting to me so I wanted to look into it but the title is ripped because my miniture beagle got a hold of my copy therefore many pages are damgaged so if anyone knows the title to what I'm talking about I'd appreciate it if you could e-mail me the title. the talents.......2005-04-06

Do you remember the parables of the talents? Jess would hate that one. All she wants to do is bury her talent under a bushel, in a hole, or anything. Or lose it. Whatever, she just wants to be a normal girl and get Rob Wilton to declare his undying love for her. She'll settle for the latter, oh- and get the FBI off her back. You see, since being hit by lightening, she is psychic, and can find missing people once she sees their picture. Naturally, the fibbies are interested. Since Jess does not want to wind up a lab rat, she has lied, saying she lost her powers. Still, she regularly makes secret calls to the missing persons' hotline to tell them where a missing child might be found.
When she gets a job as a summer camp counselor, life looks great, even if Rob was not exactly broken up over her being gone for weeks. She doesnt' even complain too much about being assigned a cabin full of bratty boys determined to drive her psychotic. Then, a father asks for her help in rescuing his child and a boy goes missing. Jess' secret can stay hidden or she can risk it all to save two kids.

With a moving message in a funny package, Ms. Cabot re-enforces the message of that parable, and also the necessity of self sacrifice for the good of others. Brava.

Jessica At Orchestra Camp.......2005-03-23

Jessica has supposedly lost her ability to locate people. Now she is working as a counselor at an orchestra camp. But things quickly go sour when she is pushed into running a boy's tent and her old nemesis from school is brought in to fill in her old place. To make things worse, her celebrity status is not completely unknown amongst the campers and staff.

In reality, Jess has not lost her powers but has gone underground with them. She secretly helps find kids who really need finding thanks to a contact at the kid search organization. But events unfolding at the camp may cause her to reveal the truth. She tries to publicly deny her ability but the FBI is still watching her. Then a camper goes missing. Jess, her love interest, and the FBI all get entangled as Jess tries to keep her life on a normal keel.

This is not just a rehash of the previous book. This one is much different in feel but is every bit as good. Readers will not be disappointed.
