    Book Description

The prevailing orthodoxy according to which all macroeconomic theory should be reducible to microeconomics is criticized. Such a dogma excludes from economics the creation of new knowledge, which - as distinguished from the mere transmission of knowledge in education and training - is a social process not reducible to microeconomics. A mathematical extension of the Lucas theory to allow for the effects of creation of knowledge upon economic development is shown to improve essentially the prediction of business cycle data, when compared with the conventional real business cycle models of Kydland and Prescott, Hansen and Rogerson, and Danthine and Donaldson.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guidelines for Running a Knowledge Organization.......2003-01-25

This book gives a basic outline of what a person needs to do in order to run a knowledge organization. This outline is called the "Accountability Management System", and it describes a set of seven principles that allow managers to gain visibility into their organization. These principles start off fairly broad and philosophical, the first one is: "Your job exists to make this company a success". These first three principles are quickly detailed, they describe the type of culture that is necessary upon which can be built a successful knowledge organization. The remaining four principles are more tactical, and therein lies the real meat and real value of the book. These last four principles include commonly used management tools, but the authors go into a great amount of detail discussing why and how
they should be applied to the knowledge organization. These four principles are portfolio management, program management, time tracking and knowledge management. Many, many books have been written on each one of these topics, but Just Add Management focuses on how to use these tools in a knowledge organization. They are all described with many examples and succinct descriptions on how to implement these concepts. Using these principles, the book ties them all together, and shows how all of these tools, working together, can bring visibility to management. They reinforce each other, and ensure that the organization is using the knowledge of all of its people.

5 out of 5 stars A Knowledge Management How To.......2003-01-21

The authors discuss their ideas about knowledge management. It is a field that I have been interested in for over 10 years. How can you encode and re-use knowledge in an organization? Can you package knowledge? Can you catalog it? Or does the act of writing down knowledge succeed only in capturing a shadow of its true worth? The authors describe the type of organization that is most likely to be able to foster the creation and re-use of knowledge. They argue that knowledge can be stored for re-use, but this is only possible if there is a predefined context for that knowledge. Like a Library?s Dewey Decimal system, the authors describe a system that gives everyone in an organization the context for storing and re-using knowledge. This system, which they coin the Accountability Management System, can give everyone a common reference for knowledge work. They include portfolio management to provide everyone with a prioritized framework for important activities, process management to provide everyone with a set of suggested guidelines for common activities and how to report progress, time tracking (which the authors call progress tracking) to measure progress, and finally, knowledge management to determine how to treat the bits of knowledge that are encountered. Here the authors go into a bit a detail, since this is the centerpiece of the book. They note the two types of knowledge, tacit and explicit, and they emphasize that they must be handled differently. Explicit knowledge can be stored, and so you should do so in process descriptions or guidelines or work templates. Tacit knowledge is much more valuable but it cannot be stored, and so you must work to spark its creation. This, the authors say, you can only do through getting people together to share and collaborate.
They give many examples and case studies to show how to do this. This book clearly shows how to use an organization?s most precious asset: its knowledge. It describes what knowledge is, how to use it and how to create more of it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great advice.......2003-01-21

This is a great book. It talks about how to really manage people. The authors seem to know what they are talking about; they talk about their backgrounds and experiences with managing difficult people. Some of these experiences weren't so good, so you can tell they speak from experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Advice.......2003-01-17

This is great advice for any manager, how to keep people in line, but still let them be creative and do their thing.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for managers.......2003-01-17

I have been managed by many people, some good, some not so good. The best managers were the ones who knew when to guide me and when to shut up and leave me alone. The worst managers were the ones who regulated my day down to the tiniest little detail. Almost as bad were the ones who gave me so much freedom that I had no idea what they wanted.

Now that I am a manager, I am trying to understand what is too much freedom and what is too much control. Countless management books exist on this subject - some simple, some complex. Many management consultants talk a lot about this. But this little book seems to explain this important concept to the average person with more humor and grace then I have seen before.

This book takes pride of place on my bookshelf.

        Book Description

This book is an up-to-date review of the basic elements directly connected to the evolution of galaxies. Owing to recent advances in observational astronomy and astrophysics, data has recently become available about remote galaxies, which are consequently in the first stages of their evolution. It is therefore essential to link these data to the observation of very old populations in our own Galaxy, which are the remnants of the populations which existed in the first stages of galactic evolution. In this meeting, the relationship between these two different points of view is emphasized in the texts presented by well-known specialists as well as by young researchers active in the field. The difficulties of the problem and the remaining uncertainties are discussed.

The first part of this book considers the ways in which organizational behavior is shaped by sexuality - for example, in a gendered industrial dispute; sexual harassment; studies of professionals who work with sex offenders; and in the organized practice of sado-masochism. The second part of the book explores how sex is organized for commercial purposes and considers sex work in an industry that can be analyzed like any other.

GEN Abrams was responsible for the quality of the Army today and since he was the Chief of Staff. His wisdom and insight into soldiering, leadership, and combat ability is what won the Gulf War. Dr. Sorley is right on the money. It is obvious that Dr. Sorley really admires GEN Abrams and he has done his homework. It's a shame that GEN Abrams died so early, he tranformed the United States Army into the force it is today, or was at the time of the Gulf War.
I met GEN Abrams in 1973 in Germany as a young Corporal and he spoke with me for a few minutes, but he struck me as unpretentious and humorous. I met Captains and Majors who had a bigger ego that him.

4 out of 5 stars An Unconventional, but Great, General.......2001-03-28

Creighton Abrams may have been the greatest American soldier of the second half of the 20th century. He served as a tank commander under General George Patton at the Battle of the Bulge, in occupied Germany and wartime Korea, as commander of United States military forces in Vietnam, and as Army Chief of Staff. It was a remarkable career! Lewis Sorley's admiring biography of General Abrams narrates the principal events in appropriate detail. In the prologue, Sorley asserts that Abrams was "the quintessential soldier," explaining that Abrams "demonstrated strategic and tactical skill and audacity," extraordinary physical bravery and intellectual courage, the capacity to lead and inspire men, [and] talent in dealing with complex and ambiguous managerial challenges." The measure of the value of this book lies in whether Sorley effectively makes that case. I believe that he largely does, as the result of which this is a very good, if not great, professional biography.

Although Sorley's approach to biography is conventional, he demonstrates on several occasions that Abrams's views could be very unconventional. Early in his chapter about West Point in the mid-1930s, for instance. Sorley asserts: "From the beginning Abrams was alienated by some aspects of the cadet experience." According to Sorley, Abrams was highly self-motivated and self-disciplined, and he resisted the petty tyranny of cadet life. After Abrams graduated and was commissioned, Sorley writes that he "was tolerant of his soldiers' having fun." (Sorley quotes one Abrams subordinate that the general, if Abrams had a weakness, "he sometimes was too easy on some people.") After World War II, while Abrams was serving in the Plans Section for Army Ground Forces in Washington, D.C., he was assigned to prepare a study on the future of the horse cavalry and quickly concluded that there was none. In 1965, shortly after President Johnson ordered American forces in Vietnam out of their advisory role and into combat, Abrams was briefing a civilian official about the sociological impact of the draft and stated that "the only Americans who have the honor to die for their country in Vietnam are the dumb, the poor, and the black." According to Sorley, "[o]ut in the field Abrams disliked briefings, especially of the canned and rehearsed variety," and "[o]ne of [Abrams's] favorite ways [to find out for himself the truth of what was going on] was through small groups of young officers he would have in for dinner." And when Abrams left Vietnam, Sorley writes that "he went as he had come - no bands, no ceremonies, no flags, no fuss." Similarly, when he arrived back in Washington, according to Sorley, he got rid of the Chief of Staff's ""big black Cadillac limousine...using instead a small Chevelle from Pentagon motor pool that was painted robin's egg blue. No amenities, not even a star plate."

Sorley occasionally offers significant insight. For instance, Sorley writes that Johnson's decision not to call up the reserves at the beginning of the expansion of the war in Vietnam was "perhaps the most fateful decision of the entire conflict." (Abrams explained the impact of this decision: "We decide[d] to use the Army in Vietnam, minus the National Guard and the Army Reserve.") In addition, according to Sorley: "A pervasive atmosphere of mistrust and antagonism characterized civil-military relationships in the Pentagon of the 1960s." Sorley describes the battle of Tet in 1968 as a "true watershed," which is not penetrating analysis, but he proceeds to explain: "Before Tet, America was seeking a military victory in Vietnam, but after it she was seeking to get out." About Abrams's appointment to the position of Army Chief of Staff, Sorley writes: "Creighton Abrams returned from Vietnam to head an Army that was widely viewed, both by the nation and from within its own ranks, as dispirited and desperately in need of reform. His appointment was the first step in getting on with the job of rebuilding."

In other places, Sorley's approach to his subject approaches hagiography. For instance, although Abrams' performance during the relief of Bastogne was heroic, Sorley's assertion that this made Abrams "the most famous small unit leader of the war" is debatable. And Sorley's assertion that "Abrams command in Vietnam was...arguably the most difficult any top American soldier in the field has ever had to face" seems extreme. But Sorley may well be correct in writing: "In terms of prior experience Abrams was probably the best-qualified man ever to assume the duties of Army Chief of Staff."

This biography concludes with Abrams's death. I would have much preferred for Sorley to devote a few pages to placing Abrams's accomplishments in the context of American military history from World War II through the middle of the Cold War. But Abrams had an extraordinary career, and this is a very good narrative of it.

5 out of 5 stars "Best U.S. General Since Grant".......2000-07-17

Sir Robert Thompson, a British counter-intelligence expert, called Abrams "the best U.S. General since Grant." Reading Sorley's terrific account of Abram's life, it's hard to argue the point.

Abrams was an armored warfare genius. His gruff, no-nonsense exterior masked a big heart and an abiding, deeply rooted love for his men and his country. His selfless devotion to duty is a model for us all.

For a more in-depth analysis of Abrams'considerable (though largely overlooked) post-Tet, post-Westmoreland successes in Vietnam, read Sorely's "A Better War."

              Book Description

Twilight's otherworldly and alchemical qualities have long attracted artists, but for photographers, who are particularly attuned to the subtleties of light, it is an especially significant time. This book draws together the work of contemporary photographers who have explored the visual and psychological effects of the transition from day to night. It examines their technically ambitious attempts to record or replicate the rapid and transient effects of daylight succumbing to darkness, and analyses the mysterious states of mind and awakened sensibilities these works suggest, at the threshold between the familiar and the unknown. In placing the photographs in their broader historical, literary, meteorological and technical contexts, Twilight reveals the timeless allure of the magic hour.

Twilight's surreal visions have long attracted photographers but it's an exceptional challenge for any who seek to capture the subtleties of light at that time, and TWILIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE MAGIC HOUR draws together the works of photographers up to the challenge. These are photographers from around the world who have explored the changes of light from day to night in a series of stunning images: this is the first title to explore twilight as an optical phenomenon and a psychological experience alike, taking eye-opening photos and placing them in historical, literary and technical context. It's thus a top pick for not just art holdings, but for any general-interest collection as well as for colleges strong in psychological and scientific exploration.

                Book Description

The Celts believed that the period between day and night—the Twilight Hour—was a perilous time, when one’s earthly spirit might cross over into a supernatural world. In this gorgeous volume, Simon Marsden, a master of eerily beautiful photographs, has interspersed his own work with selections from Celtic writing as well as the imaginative works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, and others. There are also real-life contemporary ghost stories, reminding us of the dark terrors that still haunt the present.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad..........2003-07-07

This set is actually pretty good.

"The Passersby" - starring Morgan Brittany (supermodel and she also appeared as Katherine Wentworth on "Dallas", as well as tons of staple shows from the sixties). Morgan does a credible job here. She gives it a good effort and it pays off. Her Southern accent is sweet and convincing. Where this one falls down is the use of a bland supporting cast. The role of The Seargent was masterfully played by James Gregory in the original but the person playing it here clearly doesn't have much.
Stacy Keach, for some reason, pops in to play Abraham Lincoln at the end before delivering the closing narration. The casting of Keach as host still remains a mystery to me...give me Rod Serling any day.

"The Rip Van Winkle Caper" - starring Tim Kazurinsky.
Kazurinsky gives the main character, Mr. Farwell, an English accent, which is a nice touch. Also laudable are some great sound effects and the addition of a train heist (which is only referred to in the original).

"Four O'Clock" - starring Stan Freberg. Freberg has a good time playing the part, much as Theodore Bikel did in the original.
However, the story itself was one of Serling's paler attempts.
In fact, it was adapted from a short story that itself is rather brief and unimaginative.

"The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" - starring Frank John Hughes. You have to listen closely for Hughes' part...there are four other male neighbors who are equally vocal in the Maple Street skurmish. The supporting cast are very good...perhaps better than the actors in the original version. Just my opinion, but I always felt that the TV version was a little too pretentious, much like "The Shelter". Good sound effects here as well, especially at the end where the 'monsters' make their appearance.

4 out of 5 stars The Value of Editing.......2007-03-29

First. I did enjoy the story. I think the creepiness and setting were helpful to set the mood for a good vampire story. Katina watches her new roommate struggle and disentigrate in front of her, and her fear when Chaz is after her is palpable.

That said, my biggest issue with the book is the fact that it needed editing. On the copyright page it had a disclaimer that the author refused to allow the publisher to edit it. This was a mistake. The spelling and grammar mistakes distracted me from the story numerous times. For example - ash try instead of ashtray. One sentence didn't even have a period at the end of it.

Everytime I would be on a roll with the story, something like that would jump out at me and I would lose my momentum. ANd I can't help but thinking how much mroe intense and enjoyable I would have found it if the author had allowed it to be properly edited.

                          Book Description

Megan Sinclair is finding that growing up comes with a multitude of changes and experiences; physically, emotionally, socially. After thirteen years, she's uprooted from the only home she's ever known, and all that's familiar. Her family moves to a rural Texas town, and quickly finds that life's a series of unscheduled, sometimes heartbreaking, events. Rejected by the school's most popular girl, Megan learns the difficulties of being the “new girl,” but discovers friendships and unexpected love, in the unlikeliest of classmates. With her grandma's guidance, she learns how these new changes and everyone on Earth has purpose. Grandma teaches her that by learning through old and new loves, you can see life's magic in many different forms, creating rare and special once-in-a-lifetime moments. The life-changing lesson Megan learns from her beloved grandma is that our memories, if not forgotten, guide us like ghosts, acting as guardians in our hours of twilight.
