            Book Description

The main purpose of this book is to demonstrate how in industrializing countries over the last 150 years, a particular type of maritime leisure resort was developed. Such resorts originally evolved to satisfy the new ethical values of the rising bourgeoisie and became a significant cultural influence in the adoption of a more amenity-oriented lifestyle for an increasing percentage of social classes. The author draws on detailed information from Bournemouth on the English South Coast, Nice in the South of France, and Los Angeles in the USA, and also discusses Wiesbaden, a German spa town, for comparative purposes. These developments subsequently had a direct bearing on the international town planning movement. They also created a wide variety of semi-skilled occupational opportunities and a post-industrial lifestyle that combined extensive leisure facilities with the development of professional service industries and infrastructures. The book makes a highly original contribution to the literature and will interest those concerned with the history of leisure and tourism, urban geography and planning.

              Book Description

The book is based on an extensive program of coordinated collaborative international research which aims to provide case-specific data in relation to food retailing nationally and internationally in countries which demonstrate different cultures, economic and social structures and employment systems. The inclusion of Japanese material is of particular interest to those researching working practices in Japan - as there is currently much debate about flexible Japanese manufacturing industry, but little on services such as retailing.

3 out of 5 stars Not sufficiently oriented to managers' immediate problems.......1999-09-29

Authors have done something different with their involvment of the student with the text through the "feedback exercises". These are not only fun, but provide fine topics for class discussion. I found the text did not get into the nitty-gritty problems confronting small business managers or chain unit managers. A usable text book, but the instructor had better bring a wealth of practical experience to the party.

From the supplier: The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws has approved the Model Termination Act. The bill, which has been proposed to all US states for enactment, provides employment protection, and offers benefits to employers. Workers are protected from at-will discharge with elimination of compensatory and punitive damages, while the employer may only be held responsible for reinstatement, attorney's fees and back pay.

5 out of 5 stars On why we should eat bison instead of cattle........2007-08-09

Paul really outlines in alternating chapters the demise of the heartland's habitats for birds, grasses, and grazing herbivores that once dominated the scene. He explains some of the keys in this transformation, beginning with how we farm and how we farm. Ultimately though, he offers solutions and provides some hope that habitats for prairie animals and the prairies themselves could all return if our culture chose to eat Bison meat instead of cows. I read this when it was published many years ago and haven't for one day forgotten the lessons he taught me.

On alternate chapters there is story about him returning to his roots, which is nice to space out the heaviness of the serious chapters. This part of the story I can still remember a little about, but it's not the crux of the book, just Paul's style.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing but a good reference.......2007-03-07

I had already a dictionary of science, a dictionary of physics
                      and a dictionary of philosophy.
Over a long period of time they have been helpful as references.
With the Internet available to search dictionaries like this have to provide a service
that is useful or they will not be bought.
I have this book now and I'll use over the long term,
                      but I wouldn't buy it again ...
I wouldn't have gotten this except I misplaced my good astronomy book
and needed a good look up reference for everyday.

                      2 out of 5 stars McGRAW-HILL COULD DO A LOT BETTER!.......2003-03-25

If you need to know how to pronounce "telescope", its here. But no definiton. And no entry for Maksutov or any other type of telescope. Many satellites and asteroids are here, but very few star names. I guess they are too hard to pronounce. All the constellations appear to be here but not the possessive forms which can be tricky to pronounce. Solar activity, solar day, solar max, solar month, solar sail, and hundreds of other simple terms are here but nothing on interferometry. You get the idea. This book would be of very little help while reading a history of astronomy or a book on telescopes or even an astronomy periodical. For some one like me who has been an amateur astronomer for 40+ years and lives far from population centers this book is a disappointment. I still have trouble with many pronounciations and was hoping for some help. This book is a start, but you will need help from many other sources.

                              Book Description

Students of organisation have used complexity theory in many different ways and for many different reasons. What characterises the writings of most `management thinkers', however, is that the authors are primarily concerned with the question of "how to make this complexity thing work for us?" This study takes a rather different approach. Ideas and concepts of the science of complexity are borrowed to develop the idea that organisations live lives of their own - an idea that is very much at odds with the dominant view that understands organisations as tools that we use to realise certain goals. To illustrate matters, the book discusses the developments of the organisation of Vitesse, a mediocre Dutch professional football club that according to its president needed to be transformed into a major player in the family entertainment industry.

                                Book Description

This is the poignant and exciting story of a statistical anomaly, a B-24 bomber crew that completed 50 combat missions in World War II. This crew was part of the famous 450th Bomb Group, which was nicknamed the "Cottontails" because of their white rudders. As part of the 15th Army Air Force, they flew strategic bombing missions out of Manduria, Italy (in the heel of the boot) and struck strategic targets which were out of the reach of the 8th Army Air Force bases in England. The group lost 1,505 airmen in only a year and a half—the equivalent of losing their effective flying strength three times over. The book's title comes from the crew's bomber, Shadow, which in turn was named for the pilot's black cocker spaniel that flew with them on training missions.

Based on interviews with the surviving crewmembers and their families as well as extant archival source material, the book details the childhood, training and post-war life of each of its 13 principal characters. Chapter One is a discussion of each man's boyhood years and Chapter Two provides details of the training that each received. In Chapter Three, the original crew of ten (Crew #4-N-33) was formed in Clovis, New Mexico. An assignment for training in Clovis and in B-24s meant that the crew had been designated for heavy bombardment. Chapter Four includes a description of the four main objectives for the crew, one of which was to participate in POINTBLANK, the Combined Bomber Offensive, which called for the destruction of German fighter aircraft plants, ball bearing plants, oil refineries, rubber plants, munitions factories, sub pens and bases. Details of the structural components of most missions are provided in Chapter Five. The crew completes its first missions in C! hapter Six. In Chapter Seven, "Shadow" completes its last after taking enemy fire, and Chapter Eight introduces a new plane, Sleepy Time Gal. The book's Epilogue contains information about the post-war lives of the crew.
