An outstanding book on portfolio theory and management. Covers all relevant topics with breadth and depth. Can be used as a single text for teaching. Complete in it's content. Useful for the novice and the professional. There should be a paperback version for students.

From the author: The influence of the merit pay guide chart on managerial, professional, technical, and clerical attitudes toward pay is examined in a large transit authority. Although findings indicate that both instrumentality and merit pay satisfaction are influenced by a merit pay guide chart (i.e. position in range and performance ratings) and the size merit increases, the relationship are not necessarily in the predicted direction. Regression analysis indicated that the impact of guide chart ratings on merit pay satisfaction is considerably more than on instrumentality belief. Employees who received merit increases larger than suggested by the guide chart are more satisfied with their merit pay increase than those who receive what is specified or less than what is; specified. Implications for future research and compensation practices in the public sector are discussed.

In recent years aperture synthesis and interferometry have become very powerful tools in radioastronomy. Investigation of distant galaxies, for example, have revealed structures with sizes of less than a kiloparsec. In general, the study of galaxies has benefited from the great power of these techniques.
Radar applications have also dramatically increased their quality by using the interferometry principle. Tracking and airborne radar can now determine position and velocity of objects with a much higher accuracy.
This book describes in the first six, short chapters the basics of interferometry and aperture synthesis. The following two, long chapters treat the aspects of radioastronomical interferometers and radar applications of interferometry in great detail. The text offers readers a very good opportunity to familiarize themselves with the mathematical background of these very complex techniques.

Microsoft Site Server 3 Commerce Edition is a powerful tool for efficiently building Web storefronts. If you're not familiar with the product, however, jumping in to customize a store may be a daunting task. Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition is a course in the basics of the architecture and the customization process.
It begins with a brief overview of the Site Server CE architecture and then uses the Volcano Coffee Company sample to illustrate the registration and shopping processes as they are implemented in Active Server Pages (ASP) code. There's lots of code printed in this book, with lines relevant to the text frequently highlighted. The accompanying commentary is sometimes a bit too brief but lends itself well to programmers who prefer to learn by scouring code.
Most of the remainder of the book looks at store customization. The Site Foundation Wizard is covered screen by screen, as well as the Order Processing Pipeline and all of the components that perform the work. There's also a chapter on the Ad Manager and a nice one that explains how secure transactions are implemented.
This isn't a comprehensive guide to Site Server 3 CE by any means. However, it offers a quick read that's perfect for managers and first-time programmers under the gun to learn. --Stephen W. Plain

This book was pretty much a waste of money, especially if you have any ASP programming experience and take time to look at and learn from the included sample stores that come with MSCS. Worse yet is that the code in the book contains erros and there are no updates or other information on the publisher's web site to acknowledge it (or seemingly any interest of them to even reply to my reports). Microsoft's TechNet has helpful resources and is free online at their web site. Wrox also publishes a book called Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition which isn't much better. It seems that most book publishers are taking the information presented in the Microsoft Official Curriculum Course (1231) and keep rehasing the same old stuff over and over and over... Anyone who thinks they can master Business to Consumber or Business to Business commerce by reading this book, Wrox's or taking Microsoft's own course will be in a for a disappointing surprise.
